Give It Your Best Shot: How Technology Could Help Your Healthcare Firm

There are lots of new technologies available in the medical industry today. Some of them could help you to save money and increase the level of patient care you provide. Considering that, I wanted to highlight some of the best new tech around today. With a bit of luck, learning about these advancements will inspire you to try something new. As we don’t have a free health care system in the US, you have to compete to ensure you make a profit. These concepts should help you to stay ahead of the competition and push your business forwards. At the end of the day, you should always use the latest tech if it’s going to improve the service you provide.

Custom computer systems

Firstly, you should always use a custom computer system for your company. You need something that’s designed to meet your requirements and operate seamlessly. So, now is the time to contact specialists and get the ball rolling. A personalized package is always going to work better than a general release. Industry experts from SimpleGrid Technology help clients to manage and maintain systems of that nature all the time. Indeed, many firms on the market could help to make sure you never experience issues. You just need to perform some online research and find a reputable one as soon as possible. That way, your business will never find itself out of action if there are any computer bugs.

Digital patient records

The use of digital patient records is perhaps the most significant advancement in the last ten years. In the past, you couldn’t treat someone without first calling their doctor and asking for copies of their files. It could take a week or so before you receive the documents, and that wasn’t good enough. The patient’s condition might have deteriorated, and they might have gone elsewhere. Thankfully, that is no longer the case thanks to digital records. These days, you can access patient files without having to leave your workplace or make phone calls. You can even offer online consultations if you think it will help. That’s excellent news because it means you can treat people without worrying about things like allergic reactions.

Google Adwords for marketing

There is no getting away from that fact that you have to spend a lot of money on marketing. You face a lot of competition these days. So, you have to stay at the top of your game to ensure you don’t lose out. Your website is the best promotional tool in your arsenal. For that reason, you must learn to use it to its full advantage. Google Adwords is the single most important service you will use this year. There is no minimum investment, and you can target people all over your local area. It uses an algorithm to identify the most suitable internet users and display your advertising graphics. It’s the best way to attract new patients.
Now you know about some of the technologies that could improve your operation, there is no need to hesitate. Perform as much research as possible and implement their use into your business plan today. Failure to do so could mean you never steal the lion’s share of the market. When all’s said and done, you need to make a profit if you want to succeed into the future. So, now is the best time to take advantage of the latest advancements and techniques.

Improve Your Life With Simple Tech

pexels-photo-53903

There is no point trying to fight it; the technological world is well and truly here. A such, it is time you embraced tech and opened your eyes to all the weird and wonderful ways technology may improve your day to day life. It is as the saying goes, “if you can’t beat them, join them,” and that is exactly what you should be doing now. Chances are you probably rely on tech more than you realise. You probably don’t wash you dishes in the sink, you use a dishwasher. You probably don’t have puppet shows in your house; you have a television. You probably got sick and tired of those noisy fan blades, and so you got a Dyson. See what we’re talking about. Luckily, the tech world is infinite and so there is something to make everything easier, as you are about to find out.

Robot Cleaners

Yes, the robot has arrived. It may not have eyes and arms and legs and mega-brains, but they are here and this is just the start of it: the cleaner. What they do is clean, but they do it without you needing to waste your time doing the cleaning because they are unmanned bits of kit that use sensors to work their way around your space (let’s say your kitchen) and clean everything off the floor. But you don’t have to be limited to the floor anymore. There are no robotic window cleaners too. These are incredible, especially the Winbot. All you do is put it on the window, hit that go button and let it do its thing, which is cleaning. This may sound lazy, but it is in fact a safer and more efficient way of cleaning your windows, especially when you consider getting the ladder out to clean the third floor windows, or if you live in an apartment block.

Voice Control Speakers

The Amazon Echo; you have probably seen it over recent months as the backdrop to the Amazon home page. They have been pushing this one hard, but for good reason too. It makes life simpler on so many fronts, and that is because of how well designed it is. Ask it something and it will answer, which may seem like old technology but it’s been revamped in this case. How? Well, it can link up with other bluetooth devices, such as other speakers giving you full voice control while you’re doing the dishes, lets say. Your hands are all wet and soapy, and yet you can still ask what the weather will be like tomorrow or to play your favourite song to get you through the chore you’re stuck with. You could even tell it to play movies if it’s connected with your Amazon-fire. Now that’s pretty cool; lazy, but cool.

Well-being Tracker

No, we’re not talking about those wearable trackers that measure your fitness and food habits and diet and weight loss and all those physical things we concern ourselves with. We are talking about the wearable trackers that measure our emotional well being; your stress levels for example. How these work is pretty simple and yet pretty complex too. They measure certain aspects of your life and report back when it detects stress, allowing you to combat it before it manifests. It will also allow you recognise exactly what the cause of this stress was so that you can avoid in the future or, if unavoidable, learn how to better deal with it. Feel is probably the biggest of these trackers at the moment, but more are hitting the market.

TV

Cable is expensive, and yet cable is becoming more and more irrelevant simply because catch-up is now where it is at. Streaming service have dominated. Netflix now rules Hollywood. So why fork out hundreds of dollars every year to fund something that is in decline and less and less useful, just use the internet. Of course, you are probably thinking that you need some form of television box to access on-demand services, including streaming sites, but that is not the case. You could just use a computer console or, better yet, your laptop. All you need is a wire and you can turn your widescreen TV into a huge monitor. Just go online, check out www.techbaby.com, order your cable and start enjoying a less expensive and more improved life of great shows and better movies. It’s a total win.

Security

It’s a pretty terrifying world out there and, whether we like to agree or not, even our homes don’t feel as safe as they once did. So why not get yourself some security. There are so many great products out there that help with this side of things; products that link up to your phone and let you know when movement is detected in your house. We’re talking Nest Cam’s. This isn’t just great for letting you know if there has been an intruder (even saving the footage to help the police in case of a break-in) it is also great for checking on your kids and making sure they are okay, and that they made it back from school. They also do a pretty amazing outdoor version that could be worth checking out.

Battery

Phones are smarter and cleverer and more incredible than ever, but what they are seriously lacking is battery life. There was a time, at the turn of the millennium, where our Nokia’s would last several months without a recharge, and now phone’s barely last a working day. As such, getting yourself a pocket-sized and portable charger will make life a little easier. It will mean you can use your phone as your SatNav, or talk to those family that live far away for longer. The benefits are amazing, and the kit is inexpensive. Always go for a reputable make though, someone cheap but good, a company like Anker. They are a staple go to for must tech, the kind that offer really decent stuff that will last you a long time to come (and they look slick too).

Home Emergency Handbook!

We all naturally think that our houses are one of the safest places we know. They are places we spend time with family, relax, and do all the things that generally make us happy. But, there are dangers lurking that can really damage the health and wellbeing of you and your family. They can range from minor injuries or threats to life threatening issues that need to be sorted out and isolated immediately. One of these issues may be encouraged when doing DIY, or maybe it manifests itself. Whatever the reason, they need to be carefully sorted. Here are some of the more serious home issues and how you should deal with them.

Electricity

These days we take electricity and indeed the workings of electricity for granted. It powers many homes across the world and enables us to live life as we know it. But it is deadly. Electric shocks occur every day and they range from damaging to fatal. Electrical issues occur in the home quite often. If you hear a bang stay calm, go to your mains box and check it out. First you need to turn it all off, so throw the mains switch. It’ll likely be a fuse, so just swap it out with new fuse wire. If you haven’t done it before don’t worry, it’s fairly simple. If there is anything else, such as sparking plug sockets, then you need to isolate that exact outlet. It’s a hard job, so you will need to call out emergency electricians. It is always good to get a professional opinion in circumstances like this because if you don’t get it done properly it could shock someone else or cause an electrical fire which are notoriously hard to put out.

CO2 Poisoning

You have likely heard about CO2 poisoning too. The deadly gas is colourless and odourless, and can cause all kinds of nasty symptoms ranging from cold like symptoms, headaches, nausea, to death. It is the silent killer that causes many deaths every single day. It is produced by appliances that burn fossil fuels, so a boiler for example. If you suspect these symptoms then you need to get your boiler or whatever the offending appliance is checked out as soon as possible. In fact, you should get all of your burning appliances serviced once a year. Doing this ensures that they are burning properly and comes with the added bonus of a better working machine which saves energy. You need to be warned if there is excess CO2 in the air however, and the way to do this is by installing CO2 alarms which work like fire alarms and one should be near each burner in your household.

Fire
Fire still kills thousands every year and it can come from literally anywhere. Of course you need to have your fire alarms in place so that any generated smoke can be detected. If you see a smaller fire you should tackle it and stop it spreading, this is why you should keep a general fire extinguisher in your home. If the fire is out of control, then call the fire brigade as soon as you can after escaping your house.

Strangers In The Night… Exchanging Your Poorly Protected Home For Fort Knox!

Securing your home is a major priority when you live in a “rough” neighborhood. Did you know that it takes 7 seconds for a burglar to make up their mind if they want to break into your home? In that 7 seconds they have looked at your home and picked off the various access points and have sized up how secure your home actually is. Making sure that you have the best security methods inside and outside of your dream home will keep it pristine!

Protecting Your Possessions

pexels-photo-168927

The best approach is to have a detailed list of items you own, right down to the specifications, so you can pass this to your insurance company to keep your contents policy up to date. For extremely valuable items, like jewellery, it is surprising how many people leave them in their make-up drawer or on a table. These are some of the first things a thief will go for! Invest in a security box that can only be opened by key, or a small safe if you have lots of valuables.

Doors And Windows

The easiest points of entry for any burglar, the doors, and windows of a standard home are lacking in the best types of locks, like deadlocks and a security chain. Are your doors as secure as they can be? Installing security screen doors are an essential part of security in the home. They have special mesh to go over the doorway to give you that added layer of protection. Sliding doors or patio doors are an easy entry point for burglars because the standard types have just the one clip lock. To keep it secured, place a metal bar in the tracking of the door. And if you have single-glazed windows, changing them for UPVC will make it much harder for a burglar to break through. And make sure you lock your windows, for an open window will not result in a payout from the insurance company if all your worldly possessions have been stolen!

Giving The Illusion Of Being At Home

1889931_e09cf7a338_n

https://www.flickr.com/photos/suckamc/1889931

There are simple, yet effective ways of keeping your home burglar-proof, and this is all about pretending that you are at home when you aren’t! Setting the timer to switch on the lights at intervals is a great way to keep the illusion. Purchasing motion sensors for the garden will work wonders, as the lights will switch on as soon as somebody passes the sensor. An amazing trick to keeping your home safe, when it comes to your garden, is to have a neat garden. This way, you don’t have massive shrubs that thieves can hide in, and having every corner lit up will give them nowhere to lurk. Another trick is to have a “beware of the dog” sign, even if you don’t have a dog! The sign itself will be enough to make a burglar realize that your home is not worth their time!

Look after your home, and it will look after you. So take these methods on board and cure all of your security problems.

Sage Advice For A Sucessful Business Roadshow

8391625277_866b8a6367_n

flickr

If you are a startup owner worried about attracting clients to your business, why not go out and find them instead? Events and Roadshows are incredibly popular these days, as it gives businesses a chance to get up close and personal to their ideal clients. Of course, it’s essential that you get it right – and I’m going to reveal some top tips for you to ensure your next Roadshow is a fantastic success. Read on to find out more!

Plan your objectives

OK, so you have a product or service that you want to demonstrate to customers, but you have a big question to answer first: why? Any successful roadshow needs to align directly with your core business objectives. It might be to build up a list of potential clients for marketing purposes. It could be to make some early sales. Or, it might just be to raise awareness of your new product. The point is, ensure that you have a reason for taking your goods and services on the road, other than for the sake of it.

Choose your locations

There are two steps to choosing the right location, so don’t just select the most exciting venues you can find. First of all, you have to work out your ideal audience – who are they, and most importantly, where do they live? Your venue choice will depend largely on its proximity to your customers, and the ease in which they can get there. Thorough market research is needed before you start choosing a venue and location – so don’t miss out this critical stage.

Hiring and buying

Will you need any equipment for your roadshow? You might need to develop relationships with marquee companies, or diesel generator suppliers to give some power for outdoor events. If you are hiring space, ensure that it is cost-efficient for your needs. For example, many hotels will rent out spaces to businesses in the form of packages, which include things like catering and staff. Do you really need all this, or would it be possible to cut your costs and get a better deal?

The importance of speakers and entertainment

I hate to break it to you, but as a fresh young startup, your idea is not likely to resonate with a huge audience – yet. So, you need to give people other reasons to attend your roadshow. Are there any industry thought leaders you could hire to speak at your event? Will you have any other form of entertainment – music, for instance, or even a magician? Take a look around at what the major industry trade shows do and see if you can follow suit on a smaller scale.

Promote it

Finally, don’t assume that your event will sell out just because it exists. The simple truth is that it won’t. To ensure maximum capacity, you will need to perfect your pitch, and then promote, promote, promote. In many ways, this will involve even more work than arranging the roadshow itself – so be prepared for some late nights and constant marketing.

The Most Important Elements Of Fighting The Cold In Your Home

We’re going to be dealing with the cold for quite some time yet. In fact, some parts of the world are seeing their coldest times of the year right now. But that doesn’t mean that you should just wrap yourself in as many layers as possible and let that cold ravage the home. You should be prepared to fight it. But not by burning more wood and turning the heat up further. These are the smarter moves of making your home easier to heat.

book-691407_960_720

Airflow

How well is heat able to travel through the home? If you haven’t taken the time to properly address airflow, then answer is probably not all that well. For instance, look at any ventilation gaps you have throughout the home. If dust is clogging them up, then it can stop heat from distributing from one room throughout the home. How you use your heat sources matters, too. Fireplaces and stoves are very good at heating up an area, but if you’re not helping it, it might not be traveling around the room too effectively. That’s why you should consider any additional tools you might use like a heat powered wood stove fan. Those kinds of tools can help you ensure you’re getting the full benefit of the stove without having to spend any more energy when you use it.

Efficiency

That’s the key to getting a better deal on your heating. It’s about whether or not you have to spend any more energy to make the house a bit warmer. If you’re using old equipment and appliances that haven’t been properly maintained, then the answer is probably that you’re wasting a lot more energy than you should be. For instance, one of the ways to make heating the home more efficient is by insulating any hot water pipes and boilers, causing them to contain that heat for even longer. Otherwise, you should look at any electronic heaters in the home and see if they might to be repaired or replaced.

Insulation

Your pipes aren’t the only things that should be insulated, of course. Most homes have proper insulation by now, and if not you might be able to get assistance in fitting it from your local government. However, even with that insulation, it’s possible you could be missing some leaks that are allowing a tremendous amount of heat to escape the home. You should take a look around the exterior of the home and the inside of the exterior to see if you can identify any sources of warmth escaping. Sometimes, all you need is a little caulking. But it’s important to check the vital parts of the home like the roof. Cracked and missing tiles won’t just make it a lot colder. It can be a serious factor in spreading mold and damp.

It’s not enough to just stop yourself feeling cold. Everyone should be trying to make sure they’re not spending as much money to do it. Whether that’s getting your HVAC systems prepared, your exterior sealed, or even building a little tool that can drastically improve your heating.

The Costs Of Owning A Car (And How To Reduce Them)

17307620362_83e2194883_b

Driving has become a rite of passage for most of us. But the cost of owning a car is constantly going up. Before taking the decision to become a road user, it’s important to understand the finances behind owning a car so that you don’t end up driving yourself into a sea of debt. The costs are high and you’ll need some money behind you to get you started, but there are ways to reduce spending and budget your driving so that it’s relatively affordable.

The sale price

The first cost to consider when buying a car is the sale price. In most cases, buying privately is cheaper than buying from a dealer – although this does depend a lot on the condition of the car.

Budget how much you’re willing to spend before shopping around. You may wish to save up for a few months before. Alternatively, you may be able to take out a loan (your bank may be able to offer you one or you could try out a loan site such as personalmoneystore.com).

When shopping around, don’t be afraid to haggle. Whilst bartering isn’t something we’re used to in Western society, it’s expected in bigger sales trades such as cars. Be wary of salesmen that try to throw in extra costs on top of the original price. And never buy a car without seeing it first!

Depreciation

Buying a car second-hand is definitely the cheapest way to do it. Those willing to take any vehicle will be surprised by how cheaply you can get some older cars – sometimes only for a couple hundred pounds.

Unlike property, most motor vehicles will get cheaper the more they age. This is known as ‘depreciation’.  It’s important to take this into account when buying a car as whilst you may be able to get some second-hand cars remarkably cheap – they will most certainly have few miles left on the clock. This is fine if you’re buying a temporary convenience vehicle to get you from A to B. But if you’ve got a long road trip planned or hope to travel regular long distances over a long period of time, an older car may not be appropriate. Repair costs over the years may add up and you could pay triple the amount the car is actually worth. When it comes to selling the car, you might not be able to get much for it. You may even be forced to scrap it – losing you money.

17309017491_b037ef1709_b

Insurance

Whilst the sale price is a big cost to consider, car insurance can sometimes work out even more expensive. All road vehicles in the UK must be covered by third-party insurance at least. If you’re a young driver you can expect to pay an extortionate amount at first, but this premium will go down over the years.

Many things can raise your insurance rate, just as many factors can lower it. Advanced driver courses and black box insurance are some drastic measures you can take to initially lower insurance. As time goes by, you should then try to avoid collecting speeding tickets or driving convictions (such as being caught driving on your phone) as these will raise your insurance.

Unfortunately making a claim can also raise insurance costs whether or not you were the perpetrator. Some companies will introduce a ‘no claims bonus’ offer to sway people into not making claims. When involved in an accident, always weigh up whether you’re more likely to spend or save money from making a claim.

Tax

All car owners must pay road tax – unless your vehicle is electric or built before 1973. Road tax is charged in bands, each band corresponding to how green your vehicle is. Band A applies to electric cars in which there are no emissions. The further up the bands that your car is situated, the more tax you will have to pay (so look for a car with a low band to avoid extra costs!).

Brand new cars pay higher tax their first year. In the second year this is reduced, sometimes by half the amount.

If you are not using a car you don’t have to pay tax on it, so long as you store it off road and declare it to the DVLA. You will have to sign a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).

MOT

Cars that are over three years old have to go through an annual check known as an MOT test. This test checks that your car is safe and roadworthy.

Most garages will offer MOTs – you should shop around for prices before committing. Be wary of some cheaper MOTs from garages with a low reputation. Occasionally, you may be able to save costs on your MOT test by making a few basic checks first such as checking the horn, the oil and the tyres.

The tester will let you know of any compulsory repairs that need to be made. You should also talk with the tester afterwards to gauge an idea of any future problems that you can nip early in the bud cheaply before they get worse.

car-refill-transportation-transport

Fuel

Fuel is expensive and prices are unlikely to fall dramatically any time soon. You can save money by driving economically. Many modern cars will have in-built features to help you cut down on fuel consumption such as indicators to tell you when the best time is to change gear. You should consider how economical the car is before buying. Certain extras can also be bought to save fuel consumption such as fuel savers and vapour devices.

Tyres

Tyres will gradually wear over time and are expensive to replace – so be careful with them. You can prevent tyre wear by keeping your tyres constantly filled up with air. Sadly, petrol stations charge you to use ‘air’, but it’s worth the cost to prevent you going through multiple tyres.

When buying new tyres don’t be tempted into purchasing cheaper half-worn tyres. These will no doubt blow out more quickly and you’ll back buying new tyres sooner than you need to be.

usmc-100702-m-6457m-002

Servicing and repairs

Whilst careful driving can prevent damage, as well as wear and tear, you can never prepare for all faults. Some may be electronic problems which could be a result of a manufacturing fault. Reading up on car reviews before buying can help warn you of any common faults.

Timing belts will need to be replaced once a vehicle has reached the end of its mileage. This is an expensive job, but failing to get fixed could result in a catastrophic engine failure – which nobody wants!

Warning lights will tell you when there are faults in your vehicle. Some may not be too serious, but others such as brake faults should be seen to straight away. As with all the above, remember to shop around and find the best deal. If you’re making a claim as a result of a crash or vandalism, always let your insurance company know first before making repairs.

Parking

A final cost to driving that you may want to consider is parking. Where you can avoid having to pay parking charges, do it! In some cities this may be less avoidable. Always park in places that you’re allowed to park to avoid paying fines. Unless you’re disabled, parking in disabled bays and on yellow lines will get you a ticket. Consider whether your neighbourhood has parking restrictions and weigh up these costs before buying a car.

Start Saving Today

coins-currency-investment-insurance-128867

A lot of us weren’t blessed with that money-saving gene, or that ability to understand why anyone would to save money; living each day like it’s your last hardly leaves room for you to think about the future and why saving is important. That’s why we sometimes need help understanding how a little bit of saving can improve our lives, a lot. As such, we have come up with a variety of reasons why you should consider putting aside a little bit of cash each month, which will hopefully help give you a clear goal to work towards. Enjoy.

  1. Emergencies.

This is pretty much the number 1 reason for saving money. There is nothing worse than when you suddenly have to come up with some money to cover an unexpected cost. This could be anything. It could be your car has decided it doesn’t want to drive anymore, not with the current clutch anyway. It could be that your boss hasn’t been telling the truth and they no longer need you at work, or you didn’t pass probation, and so you’re suddenly left without an income. It could be that you’re in desperate need of some water heater repair because those cold showers are starting to suck now it is the winter. There is no correct figure, but we recommend you start with having about a thousand bucks put aside, you know, just in case.

  1. House

This is a very common reason for why people save. They want to own their own home and in order to do this they really need a down payment. What’s more, when it comes to house buying, the more money you have saved the better you will be able to negotiate a great deal. Money is power after all. You’ll be able to negotiate a better interest rate and be able to look at bigger houses or houses closer to your ideal area or whatever it may be. It will also make repayments much easier to cope with. So start saving for this.

  1. Vacation or Staycation

There aren’t many things that are more annoying than when your friends decide they want to book a holiday and have invited you to join them, but you can’t accept their kind offer because you can’t afford it. Or it could just be that the increasing stress of life has got too much and you just need a break. Having a little something tucked away will grant you that freedom and the more you have tucked away the further you can go or the more luxurious your stay can be. Spontaneity is a luxury well worth investing in.

  1. Education

It may be that you’ve decided to go back to school for whatever reason. Maybe you want to improve your knowledge, maybe you want to learn a skill, maybe you have started your own small business and want to improve on your marketing know how. Saving up will allow you to achieve this dream. It may be that the education isn’t even for you. Maybe you’ve just had a child and you want them to have the best future possible, including a college education. You best start saving now. Trust us.

Obscure Foods for Your Grill

We all have our favorite go to foods for our grill, the ones that have been with us for years and always delight the family. We also have the staples, those that are always good to have in supply for big BBQ get togethers. People need to be fed, and those ones always ensure that they leave your grilling session fully satisfied.

But then there are the other ones, the ones that don’t get a regular airing on the grill. You might not have thought to grill the foods we’re listed below before, but give it a go – you might be pleasantly surprised. And if you’re not, then no bother – variety is the spice of life and you’ll have had your heat for the day.

Animals from Down Under

We all know that Australian’s know what they’re doing when it comes to setting up a barbie’. They’re the masters of it. After all, this is a nation that spends Christmas Day having a BBQ with friends and family! What you maybe didn’t know was that Australian animals can also be cooked on the grill. Think you’ve tried everything? You will be once you try a kangaroo burger, kangaroo fillet, or a crocodile burger. Some people will recoil (remember Skippy?) but those that do give it a go will have stepped outside of their comfort zone and had a meal that is utterly unique.

Straight from the Cow

If I offered you the chance to try a cow’s stomach lining, I wouldn’t hold it against you if you backed away slowly and uninvited me to every BBQ you’ll ever have. But you would be wrong, because tripe meat tastes much better than it sounds. Throw the tripe on a skewer, marinated in butter and sprinkled with breadcrumbs and scorch over high heat. Hurray, you have grilled tripe! We’re sure it’ll become a fixture on your BBQ menu for years to come.

From the Sea

Seafood tastes delicious when it’s grilled, and we’re not going to lie – we’re pretty comfortable with you trying anything, because you won’t be disappointed. Salmon, shrimp, scallops…none of them will let you down. But every now and again you might want to get a little bit adventurous with what you put on your BBQ. Need suggestions? How about an octopus? They look ridiculous, have no business in being anywhere other than the sea..and they taste delicious, especially when they’re properly prepared. You can also grill clams, which are small enough and quick enough to grill that they make for a delicious pre-meal appetizer. Simply throw them on the BBQ, cover, and in two minutes you’ll have a tasty clam ready to be eaten.

Conclusion

Essentially, what we’re saying here is: go nuts with what you’re eating! There are no rules as to what can taste great if they’re grilled in a smart way. Spend a little bit of time learning how to prepare your obscure meat and you’ll soon have an extensive menu that’ll be the envy of your BBQ buddies.

Chronic Pain Never Has A Gain – So How Should You Talk About It?

Chronic pain. In some ways, it’s such a simple term. Chronic means the condition has been going on for more than three months and has no obvious end in sight. And pain – well, pain we all understand.

For something that should, on the surface, be obvious – why do so many people have trouble understanding it?

The truth is, if you’re non-disabled and free of pain, then you can’t understand what life is like for chronic pain sufferers. You can try to empathize, and sometimes, you may even succeed.

Perhaps you can recall a time when you were injured, and you can tap into that emotion – and sharing that experience may show you’re trying to understand. But the reality is: you can’t. You can’t measure a temporary inconvenience with the feeling, knowledge and misery that comes with a condition that is guaranteed to hurt every single day.

If you have a friend or family member who suffers from a condition that causes constant pain, it’s difficult to know what to do. There is no societal survival guide for doing or saying the right things – not until now, anyway!

It doesn’t matter if you have done any of the “don’ts” on this list. It’s a tricky situation that few people know how to navigate correctly. All you can do is switch your behaviour and ensure that, in future, you’re not going to be putting a foot out of place.

DO: Understand Pain Is Relative

If you have a high pain threshold, then understanding someone else’s suffering is more difficult. The same applies if you have given birth, which is widely recognised as one of the most painful experiences a human can go through. (The TV show Mythbusters actually proved that women who have experienced childbirth have a higher pain threshold, so keep this in mind.)

What you need to try to focus on is that:

  1. a) Pain is relative. We are all wired individually, and a 2 on the pain scale is an 8 for someone else. Neither is “correct”; it’s just subjective. The pain they feel is still very real and very distressing, so you shouldn’t be comparing your own experiences with what they’re going through.

And…

  1. b) They go through this every day. It’s not a one-off inconvenience. It doesn’t have a beautiful ending like childbirth. It’s just their life; something they live with every single day, and there’s no end in sight.

Instead, treat their issue as their issue and nothing more. If they’re having a bad day or turn down social plans to their discomfort, then that’s all that matters. You have to let their perception of how they are experiencing the problem be your guide.

DON’T: Offer Suggestions For Pain Relief

This is something most of us reach for when we are trying to empathise or comfort someone. It’s a natural impulse. We read an article or see a TV show suggesting some miracle cure, and we want to bring it up.

It’s not welcome. The only exception would be if your advice is deliberately solicited, along the lines of:

“Hey, friend, have you heard anything about ways of curing pain recently? My back has been so bad, and my ankle isn’t great either, I need some advice!”

And you reply:

“Yes I do, I heard of this amazing treatment that can help with your back and bring some relief!”

Chances are, this conversation isn’t ever going to happen. If it does then sure! Go for it! But in reality, it’s not going to.

Why? Because a chronic pain sufferer knows more about handling pain than you do.

If there’s some new inventive treatment or just an old wives’ tale you want to share, they’ve heard it. They’ve heard it from other people, from their doctor, from their own late-night Google sessions as the pain stops them from sleeping. It’s not new information to them.

All you do is force them to smile and thank you politely for something they had already known. The conversation, if you strip the politeness away, is actually more like:

“Hey,” you say, “I know your back is bad, have you tried a heat bag on it?”

To which the honest response is:

“Of course I have tried a heat bag. I’m not an idiot. Why are you making it sound like I don’t know the basics of caring for my own issues? Do you think I’m incapable of knowing what might help or running my own internet search?”

DO: Sympathise

Although often used interchangeably, there is a difference between sympathy and empathy.

Sympathy is feeling sorry for what another person is going through. You have no idea what it’s like to go through what they are suffering with, but you care and understand on an intellectual level why it’s difficult.

Empathy is when you have also experienced the same thing another person is going through and can relate to it.

A perfect example is period cramps. A man can sympathise with what it’s like to have period cramps, but they can’t empathise with it.

We often reach for our own experiences in an attempt to empathise. It’s such a natural thing, such as in the above example: “I’m sorry about your period cramps, I had a really bad stomach infection a few years ago, and it hurt all the time…”

You’re trying to say that you care; that you’re sorry they’re going through this. It’s an attempt at empathy. But what it sounds like to the sufferer is: “stop whining about this! Everyone goes through painful things – and also, can we please talk about me now?”

Be content with sympathising. You don’t know what it’s like to live with chronic pain, but that doesn’t mean you can’t intellectually understand how draining it must be.

DON’T: Be Offended If They Cancel Plans

If someone you know has a pain condition that’s well-managed, it can be easy for you to forget. You make plans together, you look forward to it for weeks and then the morning of the meeting arrives… and they cancel, citing their pain levels being too severe.

It might feel disheartening, but try to think what it’s like for the sufferer. Not only are they having to let down someone they care about (causing emotional discomfort), they are also suffering on a physical level.

Be patient, be aware that plans are subject to change. If you feel frustrated – and it’s understandable if you do – then try to vent it away from the person themselves.

DO: Treat Every “Bad Day” Seriously

“How are you feeling?” You ask, knowing it’s a loaded question to a chronic pain sufferer, but you still want to ask. It’s only human to query after someone’s health, after all.

“Bad day today,” they respond with a forced smile.

“Oh, I’m sorry. How are the kids doing anyway?”

If the above sounds eerily familiar – don’t worry. Everyone does it. When you become used to the idea of someone being in pain frequently, it has less meaning on an emotional level.

The danger here is that it makes the person you care about feel unrecognised. If someone who didn’t have a chronic pain condition complained of being in a dreadful condition one day, would you immediately respond, change the subject or not linger on it? No, chances are, you’d ask for more information and if there is anything you can do to help. You’d see it as a big deal.

Try and frame all references to “bad days” on the same scale as if your friend/family member were otherwise well. They might be more prone to experiencing pain, but that doesn’t make it any easier to deal with. It doesn’t make it hurt less.

DON’T: Tell Them What They Can and Can’t Do

human-43351_960_720

Say you want to go on a hike. Your friend/family member expresses a desire to join you.

“Oh,” you shake your head, “I think it’d be too much for you.”

You think you’re being understanding; perhaps even advising them for their own good. What you’re actually doing is being patronising.

Chronic pain comes in waves. They will have good days where they feel almost normal, followed by days where they wish the earth would swallow them whole. It’s not up for you to judge what they can do on the good days. You don’t know their body – they do. They may be perfectly capable of hiking for 10 hours one day and then a week later be in agony for hours.

If someone is prone to overexerting themselves, then all you can do is show them the possible hazards. If you frame this in a general discussion, just you making them aware of potential issues, then it won’t come across poorly.

On the other side of the coin, don’t assume they can do something if you judge it to be acceptable. If they say they can’t walk a distance or sit through a three-hour theatre show, it’s not your place to contradict them.

Navigating all of the above may feel like a minefield, but it does become easier with time.
