Taking Care of Your Health One Step at a Time

Healthcare is becoming an increasing concern for many people around the world. Compared to just half a decade ago, we’re not worrying more and more about every facet of life. Are we consuming the right nutrients? Are we getting the right amount of exercise? Are we drinking enough water? These are just some of the many concerns that people think of on a regular basis.

And with good reason. With recent media exposure, there are a lot of issues going around that are putting people in a state of panic. For a while, sitting was said to be worse than smoking in terms of increasing your risk of cardiovascular disease. However, scientists are now saying that standing is actually no healthier than sitting despite all the articles, blog posts and other media scares.

Don’t always believe the media

While the media can often cite sources, it’s important to remember that not everything they say is often true. They can get facts muddled up, you might misinterpret something, or perhaps you just don’t understand what is being said when it comes to the facts and technical details, but they win over your opinion with scare tactics.

Don’t always fall for these media tricks. There are times when the media releases quality information that does hold some truth but do remember that the goal of the media, articles and bloggers is generally to get as many views as possible, hence the clickbait titles and outrageous claims. Make sure that before you believe in an opinion that you do ample research on your own. It is your health, after all, so it makes sense to put in extra effort to ensure that you are getting the right help.

With that out of the way, let’s look at some easy ways for you to get your health back on track, a single step at a time.

Focus on lifestyle changes, not temporary changes

Your body and health are in their current states because of how you have been treating it for the past couple of years. If you feel you are overweight, have a bad back, or get strain injuries when using your computer then that’s likely because of the activities you partake in. If you use the computer a lot then you’re going to eventually end up with wrist and hand strain injuries if you don’t take regular breaks or try to strengthen those joints. If you feel like you have a bad back, it could be the result of bad posture when you sit in your office chair.

To fix these issues, we can often make drastic changes and we’ll be motivated to keep them for a long time. For example, you might invest in a standing desk and use it for a couple of weeks, but eventually, you could get tired and not only will you use it less often, but you’ll also have wasted money on it.

This is why it’s important to make lifestyle changes that you can keep. For starters, instead of using a standing desk, how about getting up and stretching more often? Celebrate completing an assignment at work by getting up, stretching and walking to the kitchen to get yourself a cup of tea. Just finished eating dinner? How about taking your dog for a walk or strolling around the block to get a bit of post-dinner exercise to let the food settle. It’s these small changes that will amount to habit, and once they become habits you can keep on refining those lifestyle changes to make your body more healthy.

Your diet should be consistent, not a fad

The food we eat is incredibly important when it comes to maintaining a healthy lifestyle. It’s for this reason that we are more likely to check food labels, read up online about the nutrients we should be getting, and we might consider taking supplements or hiring a nutritionist. But whatever you decide to eat or cut back on, remember that you are supposed to maintain that diet as a lifestyle change, not a temporary one.

Too many people believe that “diet” is a term used for a temporary change in your eating habits, and it has been advertised as such by big-brand news sites and even some fitness regimes. Unfortunately, a diet isn’t supposed to be something that you take on for a couple of days, weeks or even months. If you can’t stick to dietary changes, then it’s a good idea to take it slow and make small changes here and there.

For example, cutting out soda might be hard for someone who used to drink a lot of it. You will undoubtedly get cravings for soda later in the future if you try to cut it all out in one go, so the best way to get around this is to slowly cut down. Buy less soda, buy smaller bottles, or reduce the frequency that you go to the store to buy soda. Replace it with carbonated water, flavoured water or even just tea. The idea is to reduce eating unhealthy things, not replace them entirely. Once you get used to having smaller amounts of something unhealthy, you can then proceed to phase it out entirely and only have it when there’s a special occasion.

Look after yourself at work

Many of our negative health factors could be attributed to our working conditions. For example, if you work around a lot of smoke, then you could develop a cough very easily or even worse, other health conditions that you might not be aware of. In times like this, you need to really consider if the job you are doing is worth the health risk. If not, then consider leaving and finding another job that puts your own health at less risk.

You could also speak to your employer about safety equipment. If we use the example of smoke, then your employer is expected to equip their members of staff with the proper safety equipment and have security measures in place for the well-being of their staff. For example, making sure the exhaust fan works to pull out smoke and chemicals from the air, smoke and gas masks for periods of heavy smoke, and regular screening to ensure that you aren’t inhaling nasty chemicals. You should also be limited to the amount you can be exposed to those conditions. There is some great info from Robins Cloud that will teach you about adverse working conditions, and the options you can take should you feel like you are being mistreated at work and, as a result, you are suffering from adverse health conditions.

You might be fortunate enough to not work in a hazardous environment, but that doesn’t mean you are free of nasty chemicals or health risks. For starters, if you are sitting for long periods of time then you need to ensure your posture is correct. Keep your back straight, stop slouching and ensure you have a good quality chair that supports your back. Keep in mind that there are a lot of different devices and gadgets you can use to improve your quality of life at work, such as arthritis gloves for typists or back support devices that attach to your chair. Keep in mind that your employer should be looking after your health and safety, so always approach them about these changes so they can help you pay for them.

Take care of your mental health as well

Bottling up your emotions and struggling with stress can be debilitating. It can have a huge negative impact on your quality of life, and the issues could develop into worse conditions if not handled correctly. If you feel like you are suffering from depression or other mental issues, it’s never a bad idea to visit a doctor and speak to them about your problems. Having a close friend or family member to speak to can also help you maintain good mental health.

Mental health can be improved by first improving any other aspect of your life. Stress usually stems from an inherent fear of something, and that fear could be something like your job security, your weight or even your appearance. But eating well, keeping active and taking care of your body, it will reduce the amount of mental stress you have and contribute to your overall health.

Going on regular holidays, taking relaxing breaks and relaxing at home are great ways to melt stress away. Always try to indulge yourself in a luxurious activity once a week, be it a spa experience, a comfortable night in with a film and some friends, or even a massage. By having something to look forward to when the work week ends, you’ll feel motivated to work and push through the week of stress to reach your goal of relaxation.

Final Words
Taking small steps is perhaps the most critical part of improving your overall health. Large changes can be done, but they often don’t stick because of how difficult it can be to stick to those changes. Instead of trying to make large sweeping changes to your life that are hard to swallow, take it easy and work on those changes one at a time.

The Most Common Addictions And How You Can Overcome Them Indefinitely

We live in a modern society where we have more at our fingertips than ever before. Technology, legal highs and ways to block out certain memories are just some of the things we can get addicted to in our daily life. But these common and normal things for today’s world could turn into an addiction if you are not careful. So I thought it was worth highlighting some of the most common addictions and how you can overcome them indefinitely.

Drinking alcohol

Drinking a glass of wine or the tipple of your choice is something many people enjoy doing on a regular basis. They may associate drinking with the end of the working week or choose to enjoy a cheeky glass to help you relax at night. We all have our reasons and levels that we are comfortable with, but drinking can turn into an addiction if you are not careful. Being an alcoholic is an extreme version of the addiction, this is where you can’t even get out of bed without a drink to get you going. Being alcohol dependent is a whole different ball game and possibly more common than we realize because we are less aware of the signs. If you find yourself not being able to pass a Friday night without a drink or not being able to go a day without one, then you may be more dependent than you think and you could be addicted. Try and cut down and consider trying a booze free month to see how you get on. There are plenty of health benefits to stopping drinking for good.

Smoking each day

Smoking is another everyday habit that people partake in, but it is a strong addiction that some people can’t muster up the confidence to give up for go. There are a couple of reasons why smoking is bad for you, one being the harmful chemicals you inhale are the leading cause of fatal diseases that lead to death. However, there are plenty of options to consider when it comes to quitting, so why not try nicotine patches, going cold turkey or even trying vaping with an e-cigarette? There are plenty of e-juice flavors to consider.

Addiction to the internet or your phone

As technology advances and we have more and more available at our fingertips, the rise of internet and smartphone addiction is increasing. Constant, bordering obsessive internet browsing and social media updates that become part of your daily routine can cause irritability, frustration and even affect your life and relationships. If you think you are getting too much internet and technology in your life, try to have moments of time where you are technology free. It’s strangely liberating, and after all, how did they manage all those years ago without the smartphone?

Workaholism

Workaholism is something that is fairly new, but as the rise of the commercial world exceeds so does the expectation employers place on us, and what we place on ourselves. Always wanting to be better than work colleagues, and putting in more hours than you need to be doing are all signs. Try and take a step back from work, and enjoy life outside of the office walls.
I hope this has made you more aware of some of the most common addictions we can all face in our lives.

Diagnosis Is Not The End, But The Beginning: How To Deal With Being Told You’re Ill

Diagnosis.

800px-pikiwiki_israel_15784_subtle_diagnosis

For some, diagnosis comes at the end of a long road of looking for answers about their health. Finally discovering what is wrong with them brings a certain kind of peace; the solution; the cause they have been seeking. No longer do they have to scramble to try to find their way – they can move forward.

In some respects, those people are lucky – even if their road to diagnosis was a painful one. They have been anticipating something for years as they age and can find relief in discovering their condition.

For those less fortunate to have known such a thing was around the corner, being diagnosed with a health condition can be terrifying. There is a myriad of ways you can find yourself being told you have a health condition and you had no idea it was on the cards. Maybe you dismissed symptoms you have since learned you shouldn’t or something minor became something major. Perhaps you just had anomalous results on what you thought was a standard testing procedure.

However it’s happened, the reality is stark. Last week, as far as you knew, you were healthy. Maybe you need to lose a bit of weight or cut back on your alcohol consumption, but that was all. Now, you’ve been told you have a condition and that you are due to undergo treatment.

How do you learn to cope?

Step One: Don’t Panic

Panicking doesn’t solve anything. In fact, with some health conditions it might actually exacerbate the problem.

Of course, saying “don’t panic” is not going to make it so. No one chooses to panic; it just happens to us. What you can control is your response.

Focus on self-calming techniques such as meditation and positive self-talk. They might sound like New Age mumbo-jumbo, but they work for millions of people – and you’re going to need a clear mind to get through this.

If necessary, seek professional advice on this through a therapist. You don’t have to worry about burdening your family and friends with your concerns, but you still have an outlet. It doesn’t have to be a long course of therapy, but a few chats to help your articulate your feelings could be beneficial.

Step Two: Research Mode

If you have been diagnosed out of the blue, then you can find yourself faced with what feels like an uphill struggle. You have a new, complex medical term and you suffer from it – but you know nothing about it.

doctor-563428_960_720

At this point, it’s natural to want to go and research it – and to an extent, you should. Just try to bear in mind that you will find horror stories of even the most benign of illnesses, so try to take everything with a pinch of salt. This is especially true if you’re doing your research online, when people are more likely to embellish. Don’t be frightened by what you read.

This also gives you an opportunity to learn more about treatments. Unless you have been keeping abreast of scientific breakthroughs, you’ll be surprised by how much you have to learn. Treatment for illnesses is evolving all the time, and the prognosis of the patient is improving at the same rate. Medicine does not stand still.

paracetamol-315875_960_720

You may discover revolutionary new treatments such as gene editing techniques that you want to try, and there’s no harm in bringing them up with your doctor. Focus on areas that are medically recognized and being conducted by doctors.

Step Three: Avoid The Crackpots

In the course of research mode, you will find yourself confronted by a snake oil salesman or twenty who will promise a cure for a bargain price. Don’t be tempted.

While alternative therapies like acupuncture can have some therapeutic benefit, don’t be swayed too much by alternative remedies. It may be tempting that someone has the fix you have been longing for, but if they did, then they wouldn’t be selling it online – it’d be being channeled through big pharma. So be skeptical and always discuss anything that you want to experiment with through your medical professionals.

This is especially important to remember even if you are usually more sceptical. You might not be in the right frame of mind to apply your usual reasoning to anything you read, so be wary of that and ensure that you take your time. If necessary, always bring up anything you want to try with a friend and see if they think it’s a good decision.

health-1294825_960_720

Bear in mind this is not just about protecting yourself financially – it’s also a health risk to try a treatment that is not medically verified. This is especially true if you’re taking a supplement that has not been tested, so go cautiously at every point.

Step Four: Talk To Others

While you’re online, support networks are there waiting for you to explore. You can talk to those who suffer from the same condition. Even if you don’t learn anything in terms of your illness, it will at least give you some insight into how others cope.

You’ll also need to talk to your friends and family. Try and keep it brief. Explain you are unwell, what the next steps of treatment are and how it might impact your ability to interact with them. This is a difficult thing to do, and don’t be ashamed of not being able to face it in person – email and explain your decision to do so if it helps.

If you’re tempted to keep things to yourself, don’t. You’re going to need support, and you’re going to need people to be understanding. By all means keep it brief, but definitely make sure people are aware.

Step Five: Acceptance

When all of the above is done, you will be on better ground than you were when you were diagnosed. Try and keep in mind that now you know, you can do something about it. Better that than an illness be discovered when it’s too late to take action – so go forward with optimism in mind.

Resolutions to Make That Will Actually Enrich Your Life

If you are thinking of making resolutions in the new year, it sometimes feels like you are setting yourself up for failure. So often we fail at making them work and after a few weeks in we have completely forgotten about them. Things, like losing weight or running a marathon, are quite general. They aren’t specific enough to get things done. Plus, it doesn’t deal with the nitty-gritty about how things got that way in the first place. But there are certain things that you can resolve to do that are much less likely to fail. So have a read of these below and perhaps pick one or two to choose from. You might be surprised at just how much they might change your life.

Improve Life in Your Community

When the place you live is a happier place to be, then it will make it a nicer place for you to live in. So even small things like saying hi to your neighbors can make a massive difference. Greet your neighbors instead of ignoring them or just nodding. When we speak and get to know them, it will make the area that you live a much nicer place to be. It can also be quite contagious. They are much more likely to go about and do the same. When we know our neighbors better, we have a better support system in emergencies. It makes going to local events easier and will help us to enjoy our homes and where we live better.

Change Things You Dislike

If there are certain things that you dislike about your life, then it is time to change them. If you find that you are unhappy, then think about the reasons why you might be. Then make practical changes to correct them. It might be that you need to forgive someone, as you’ve been holding onto something for too long. Changing jobs could help perhaps, or you might consider something like life coaching. If you feel that you need more than just you to get over a certain issue, then you could consider the latter with someone like Darren Christopher Rowland. Then you can move on and make your life happier than it has been in a long time.

Make Eye Contact

This goes for everyone that we come into contact with. But when you give someone eye contact, it makes the interaction much more meaningful. We are all busy, so it might be hard to listen to our kids and make the dinner. But just take a time out and listen to them and then make the dinner. It will make them feel much more appreciated, and you won’t feel as rushed or busy when you do things one at a time.

Speak to Family

You might be familiar with the phrase that blood is thicker than water. Keeping in touch with family is one of the best things that you can do. It will benefit more than just you and make your life much more enriched. So call, visit and arrange things with the family that you have left.

3 Simple Ideas For Turning Your Life Around In 2017

Have you felt a little down recently? Are you in your twenties and thinking “there must be more to life than this”? Then you’ve come to the right place. We’re currently approaching Christmas, and that means the new year is just around the corner. That’s a fantastic opportunity for you to do something exciting and turn your life around. Nobody wants to see the same old dull surroundings all their life, and nobody intends to work a dead-end job. So, now is the time to make a plan for the future and try to increase your opportunities. Of course, you are the best person to work out the finer details. I just wanted to offer some suggestions.

Move to a different country

The idea of moving abroad excites many people. However, they often feel that turning their dream into a reality is impossible. That simply isn’t the case! Most countries have reasonable immigration rules, and so anyone can achieve that goal. You just need to understand which stipulations you need to satisfy. For instance, Canada is always on the lookout for manual workers, and the same applies to the UK. So, don’t sit at home feeling like you’ve never had the chance to experience other cultures. Anyone could move abroad for a few years and try something new with minimal effort. Also, nothing is stopping you from coming back home if it all goes wrong, but at least you’ll have had the experience.

Get a college degree

If you’re sick of working low-paid jobs, it could be time to head back to college. Getting a degree could open up an entirely new world of opportunities. You could become a doctor or a lawyer and never have to worry about money again. You could even train to become a nurse or something similar if you want to help people. Just work out what you want to do and start to develop your college application strategy as soon as possible. Contrary to popular belief, it’s never too late to get an education. Being as you’re only in your twenties, you have more than enough time to turn things around. Remember, most people work well into their sixties these days.

Find a life partner

It’s possible you might feel a little depressed about life recently because you are spending it alone. So, why not try to meet someone special and share your existence? The process is much easier these days thanks to specialist dating websites and apps. Indeed, around 10% of new couples met using the internet last year. It has become a “normal” way to forge relationships with potential partners and change your life. Just make sure you are smart when it comes to the people you choose to meet. Select those who appear to have at least some of the same interests for the best results.

Making those three fundamental changes in 2017 could improve your life considerably. The issue is that most people struggle to identify them without outside advice. So, now you’ve read the information, you should be in the best position to put it to good use. Feel free to share this post with any friends you know are feeling down this holiday season. As I’m sure you understand, self-help is the key to a happy life.

You Can Overcome Failure In Various Aspects Of Your Life

Everyone fails from time to time, but some people are hit way harder than others. Failure can come in all shapes and sizes, but remember, the most important thing is how you deal with the failure and overcome it, that’s what truly matters. There’s nothing wrong with dusting yourself off, getting back up, and trying again. Here are some varying aspects in life you could fail at, and how best to try again.

Failure In Business

Happiness in business is quite had to ascertain, and when you realise that 90% of new startups fail, it becomes clear just how hard business success is, that in itself should give you some reassurances if you’ve failed. However, just because you failed does not mean you or your business ideas are constantly doomed. Instead, try to learn from it, avoid the same mistakes next time around. The lessons you can learn from failing, from whatever reasons, will make you a better person and help you become a better businessperson in future endeavours. You need to search and find a lesson, take something from the failure and apply it next time around. Set yourself, be adamant you’ll succeed and keep pushing, only this way can you overcome failure. Start again, just keep pouring your drive and influence into new business ideas and plans, it’s all about self motivation, if you can get a business up and running again you’ll know what to look out for to keep it afloat.

Failure In Education

If you didn’t get the degree you wanted or failed at getting one altogether try not to let it get to you, there are many people who failed university and still managed to make huge successes out of their lives, again it’s how you stand up despite failure. Failing college overall is of course way worse than simply failing a semester, but you need to pick yourself up and analyse your life. If what you wanted to do really centred around the obtaining of a degree then re-enroll. Admit you messed up and get straight back into it. Sometimes you can make a deal with your head of school and only resit part of the year, providing you’ve got some good grades the first time around, this can stop you having to resit the whole course again and could save you a year or two of your life. Learn from your mistakes and study more, even hire a tutor for extra help if you need to. If what you want from life does not require a degree, then perhaps it’s time to move on, and it’ll save you a tonne of debt. There are other types of training courses available for people who are smart but don’t have degrees, so get researching and stay positive, as we have seen, it can be done.

Failure In Sport

So you wanted to become a big star, but it hasn’t worked out. Either you’ve picked up one injury too many, or your talents simply aren’t up to scratch compared to the rest of the people in your area. Failure may not be the end for you. You need to pick yourself up, either get into the gym, book sessions in with a physio and get out on the field training every day to improve, or take a long hard think and ponder whether this is exactly what you wanted to do, because if you haven’t got the drive to get out and work, you likely don’t want it enough. Think about other passions and pastimes you may have, start diverting more of your time into them and before long you’ll have a new direction in life. Dealing with sporting failure is one of the hardest to overcome because often there is no way back, especially if you’re in your early twenties.

Failure In Marriage

If your marriage has failed then first you need to take a deep breath, and understand it wasn’t all your fault, it’s split 50/50. Of course some people realise the failure eventually leads to happiness, and it’s from this you should draw solace. If the marriage failed, for whatever reason, then it wasn’t right. It’ll feel awful at first, especially if you didn’t necessarily want it to end. But time is the best healer, and before long you’ll be back on your feet. The power of positivity rules here, you need to get outside with your family and friends, meet new people, try new things, and before long months would have passed and you’ll be happy it all ended. Granted, it’s a horrible thing to go through, but just remember if it’s going to make you happier it needs to be done.

Career Failure

One of the most common failures is that of a career failure. Perhaps you thought you would be higher in the company you work for, perhaps you thought you’d be head of department in a school instead of just a teacher? There are two things to consider, firstly, changing careers, and secondly, whether you’ve been pushing hard enough. If you have, then step back and if you’re not happy leave, your happiness comes first. If you haven’t, then ask for a meeting with your supervisor and tell him exactly what you want and when you want it by. Be assertive, if you’re good at your job they may give you a raise just to keep you at the business instead of lose you to a competitor. Sometimes you won’t get noticed unless you start shouting about it. Don’t see it as a failure if you’re passed over for promotion, just keep going, apply again using the previous rounds experience to guide you forward. Start applying for similar jobs in different businesses or fields, doing this can get you a better pay grade or more responsibility, all things you can put on your resume.  The key in the career game is not to get bogged down, because if you do life will fly past and before you know it it’ll be too late.

Be The Change You Want To See In The New Year

With new year fast approaching, there’s no better time to look towards changing the way you live. We’re going to look at new year resolutions you can make to ensure you live a fuller life. We all want to be happier, and making a few changes can go a long way towards that goal. Take the time, while making your resolutions, to consider what changes would help you. Here are a few things worth considering.

BE KIND

Kindness goes a long way. Treating people around you with kindness will help you to be kinder to yourself. Instead of walking past the homeless, take the time to stop and chat. If you aren’t comfortable giving money, why not ask if there’s anything you can buy, such as food, etc? Be kinder to the people in your life too. All too often we take our loved ones for granted and forget to value what we’ve got. If you’ve been neglecting your partner, make more of an effort to spend quality time together. If you’ve been short-tempered with your family, change that behavior. It’s surprising how different the world can be when we take the time to practice kindness.

14488562814_4b6a587210_b

Image from Flickr

GET INVOLVED

Getting involved in your community is a type of kindness, but it’s much more involved. Find out what initiatives are in your community, and get involved. Knowing you’re doing what you can will help towards your feeling of satisfaction. Not to mention, it’ll be a significant contribution to the schemes you offer your time to. Is there a local food bank you can donate to? Or, maybe you would like to volunteer. Is there a care home that needs befrienders to spend time with the residents? Think through what you would like to do and find out if your community offers the chance to do it!

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Becoming more environmentally aware is another positive change. The environment is ever in danger, yet we rarely take the time to change bad habits. Use the new year to turn your attention to a greener planet. Learn about environmental issues and make positive changes. Simple things like eating the food you buy can help, as can changing to solar power using companies such as Semper Solaris. Or, something as easy as walking instead of driving can make a huge difference. Not to mention, it’ll make you feel better.

MINDFULNESS

As well as spreading your kindness outwards, it’s important to be kind to yourself. Practicing mindfulness will help you become more aware of how you treat yourself. It’ll help you make your own happiness. We are often more unforgiving of ourselves than anybody, so mindfulness can be a wonderful practice to get to grips with. Maybe spend a little time meditating each day, or start a yoga practice. If you don’t think you have time for either of those, keep things simple. Even taking the time to appreciate what’s around you will make a huge difference. Learn to accept yourself in the new year!

Drive Away Stress: Avoid These Common Road Frustrations

In many cases, driving makes your life less stressful. Having a car makes it easier to get to work in the morning. You can also take fun road trips and holidays with it. Sometimes it can even be an enjoyable hobby to take a drive. But at other times, being on the road can drive you crazy.

Studies reveal that road rage is rising, especially in busy city areas with congested traffic. Issues such as car breakdowns and rude motorists can quickly send drivers into a tailspin. No one wants to be stressed out, so use these methods to avoid common road frustrations.

Avoid Busy Traffic

One of the biggest sources of frustration for all drivers is getting stuck in traffic. When all you need to do is get somewhere, congested roads holding you up can make your blood boil fast. That’s why it helps your stress levels if you avoid busy traffic.

You might want to plan your journey around how busy the roads are. Some apps can give you information on current traffic. If the route you need to take is too busy, it might be worth waiting for the roads to die down.

Of course, this isn’t always practical. For instance, you can’t waste time when you need to get to work in the morning! Another method that can help is simply taking a different route. Find quiet roads to cruise through. Even if the distance of the route is longer, avoiding traffic will save you time.

Prepare For Car Problems

In an ideal world, you’d never have to deal with a flat tyre or a broken windshield. But accidents happen, and sometimes car faults can emerge out of nowhere. The best approach to take is to prepare for these things happening.

Make sure you know where you need to go if an issue occurs with your car. Knowing the nearest mechanic will also help. You might also want to find an auto electrician in case you need help replacing a car battery.

You can also save some stress by handling some repairs yourself. Keep a spare tyre in the boot of your car in case one of yours goes flat. It’s also simple enough to replace windshield wipers or lights as long as you have spares handy.

Cut Down Costs

The costs of a car can also be stressful. Having to fork over your dollars for regular fuel refills can be frustrating. There’s also insurance and repair expenses to deal with, as well as the cost of the vehicle itself!

If your car is costing you too much every month, consider a replacement. Using an old banger until you get on your financial feet can save you a lot of money. Make sure you also compare all insurance deals and protect yourself against high insurance fees.

Ditch The Car

Want to know a surefire way to avoid the stresses of driving? Don’t get in the car! By finding other ways to get around more often, you can save yourself a lot of frustration.

For instance, is your daily commute driving you mad? Consider cycling to work. It’s a healthy way to travel that also reduces stress. You could also consider public transport or you might even want to take a Uber ride.

Only driving when you need to will also reduce your fuel costs. Of course, it also makes car faults less likely to happen. It’ll save you all kinds of road stress, so take a walk more often.

How To Have THAT Conversation About Ageing (And What To Do After It Too!)

Talking about ageing with your family can be far from easy. From your perspective, it can be upsetting. After all, most of us are very emotionally close to our family members, and the thought of them leaving us can cause trauma. On the other hand, it can cause your aging relative themselves to become distressed or even offended. The current aging population are very proud and some of them will be offended if you try to offer them extra care – even if you mean well. This is why it is vital that you approach all topics tactfully and in a calm environment. All of us age and that can’t be helped. But what we do have control of is how we deal with it and what measures we put in place to make sure that our lives, and the lives of our relatives, remain as good as they can be.

Maintaining independence

Due to various health problems that can arise in the elderly, many older people are unfortunately unable to continue to live independently. This can be a daunting prospect for someone who has been independent all of their life, so approach the topic with caution. Essentially, you will need to decide, with your relative, what the plan should be if they are no longer able to live completely alone. There are quite a few different options here. One that some families take is moving their ageing loved one right into their own homes. But this is not always the best option, as it can lead to family conflict and a disrupted home life for you as well. It may be worth considering a Live -In Care Company who will be able to care for your loved one professionally. Plus, this can allow your relative to stay in their own home too – something many seniors feel passionate about.

Keeping healthy

A lot of older people want to try to deny the fact that their health is deteriorating. But unfortunately, there are no two ways about it. We are simply more prone to illnesses, such as dementia and osteoporosis, the older we get. There are, however, measures we can put in place to help delay the onset of such illnesses. Make sure your relative is eating well – lots of fruit and vegetables, and normal amounts of candy or alcohol. As people age, they may not always be able to cook for themselves anymore. So make sure they always have healthy food on hand that they can snack on, and offer to help them with cooking an evening meal.

Keeping active

Keeping active in old age relates to both physical and mental activity. It is vital that you encourage your elderly relative to keep walking or even doing sports if they are able to. Choose low-intensity exercises to recommend to them, such as pilates or golf. Walking soccer even exists these days, to help ageing soccer players keep enjoying their game. If a class doesn’t exist near you, why not set one up yourself? As far as mental capacity goes, being socialized helps to keep the brain sharp. So continue to visit your elderly relative on a regular basis, and encourage them to join a local community group where they can gather with old friends too.

It’s one of life’s biggest questions: can you ever be completely happy and content with your life? Some people will think that it is totally possible. But what if you always seem to be on the receiving end of bad luck and always go through unhappy situations? This then leads us to the next important question in life: is it possible to make your own happiness?

Many people agree that if you go through life with an optimistic outlook, then you are more likely to enjoy your life and feel a lot happier as a result. But how exactly do you make happiness in your life? It isn’t always easy to do. Especially if you are currently going through a rough patch in your life. However, that doesn’t mean that it is completely impossible. You just need to try a little harder! Are you now intrigued to learn how it is done? Here are my top tips that can help you find it easier to make happiness in your life.

Be Proactive With Happiness

If you want to go from unhappy to happy, you need to make a conscious effort to change. And that means being proactive in your search for happiness. There are a number of ways that you can do this. Firstly, you could think about using self-help books and courses from life coaches such as Bob Doyle. These types of books inform you of many strategies you can use to feel a lot more happy with your life. Not only that, though, but they will also include some ways in which you can improve your work life and wealth. Secondly, you need to get used to changing your relationships and way of life. If you don’t, you will find it very difficult to try to be proactive to increase your happiness in life.

Lose The Bad Links

We all have some bad links in our lives. And by bad links I mean those people who drag us down no matter what kind of mood we may be in. There is no doubt that these people are detrimental to our mental health and happiness. So it is in your best intention to try to cut them out of your life. It could be a particular friend who is always off-loading their own problems onto you. Or it could be another friend who is always asking to lend cash from you and never pays you back. However they may be bringing you down, it is important to cut them loose so that this friendship doesn’t bring your happiness down with it.

Reassess Romantic Relationships

You also need to reassess your romantic relationship. After all, it isn’t just your friends who can be bad for your happiness levels. Your partner could also be having a negative effect as well. Are you not completely happy with your current relationship? Then you should either consider working to improve it or getting out. Don’t feel bad about ending the relationship if it is causing you to feel unhappy or distressed. If this is the case, it will be in your best interest to bring things to an end. You deserve to live a happy life with someone who truly makes you happy and cares for you. If your current partner isn’t that person, then it is time to get out there and find your one true love!

Be Happy With What You’ve Got

I’m sure most of us will have looked at someone else’s life and felt slightly jealous. Maybe it was because they have a beautiful home or have been very fortunate in their career. However, all this jealousy isn’t going to do your happiness levels any good. In fact, the jealousy could even make them decrease. That’s why it is very important to learn to be happy with what you have already got. So you may not have a large house or a fabulous career. But you will have many other things in your life that you should feel happy with and lucky to have. We all have something that we can be thankful for. By focusing on these and ignoring the lives of others, you will start to be truly happy and grateful for the life you have.

Get Healthy

Good health goes a long way towards being happy. So if you are completely dedicated to your quest for happiness, you will need to also look at improving your health. Starting to take more care about what you eat will be a great first step in improving your overall health. And so will trying to get fit.  It’s very important to follow a balanced diet and have lots of regular exercise. This way, your body will be in peak condition, and you won’t need to worry about certain health conditions getting you down.

Forget About Treats

Quite a few people treat themselves whenever they are feeling slightly blue. They may allow themselves to have a glass of wine, cigarette or slice of cake. These treats can help to comfort you during distressing times and can give you an instant boost of happiness. This may be great in the short-term, but it won’t be doing your long-term happiness levels any good. And it’s all to do with guilt levels. Most of the treats we allow ourselves aren’t that great for our health. So we are often consumed with feelings of guilt after indulging. In some cases, you may even experience feelings associated with a loss of control. The best way to combat all these negative feelings is to stop with the treats altogether. Focus on long-term goals rather than these quick-fix treats. You will notice a great improvement in your overall happiness levels if you do.

Learn How To Forgive

Do you always hold on to your grudges? That certainly won’t be doing your happiness levels any good at all! Instead, you need to learn how to forgive. Even if you can’t forgive and forget, just doing the former will do you the world of good. That’s because you won’t be nursing your grudges forever and will find it a lot easier to move on with your life. By forgiving, you will find it very easy to let go of any bitterness and resentment in your life. Which is great news for your happiness. So why dwell on something when you could work on forgiveness and let go of all the anger?

Learn How To Deal With Negative Emotions

Sometimes, no matter how hard you may try, certain negative thoughts and feelings will prevent you from feeling happy. It is important to learn how to deal with these negative emotions. Most people find that the best way to overcome all these upsetting emotions is to practice mindfulness. Don’t worry if you are completely new to mindfulness and other similar meditation techniques. There are many apps that can help to get you started such as Headspace. Mindfulness won’t completely eliminate all of these bad thoughts and feelings.  But it will help teach you how you can cope with them and prevent them from affecting your life. Once you are more in control of all these unsettling emotions, you will find that they rarely affect your life anymore. And you will be able to enjoy being happy.

Forget About Money

We all know the saying ‘money can’t buy you happiness’. And it is completely true! So one of the most important steps that you need to take on your journey to happiness is to forget about money. Sure, money can help you lead a comfortable life. But it isn’t going to bring you all the happiness in the world. So if you are currently trying to work on increasing your pay package, you may want to take a break and reassess the rest of your life. Are you sure you want that promotion? It might only bring you a lot more stress and anxiety in the workplace. This can greatly affect your happiness, and no amount of money will be able to help you! So rather than focusing solely on money, take stock of your life and try to fix the more fulfilling areas.

Take Responsibility

No matter what happens in your life, you shouldn’t blame others for your unhappiness. Your life is yours and should be in your own hands. Even if someone is trying their best to make you unhappy, you need to remember that you are in control of your own thoughts and feelings. And you can control these to make sure that you aren’t too affected by the actions of others. There is also another great advantage if you do take responsibility for your life. And that is that you will be able to feel completely proud with all of your achievements. After all, it was you who achieved them and no one else!

So, as you can see, happiness isn’t completely out of reach. In fact, it can be very easy to work towards. You just need to be prepared to put in a little effort so that you can get into the right frame of mind!
