Lt. Columbo –Signs To Watch For When Your Child Goes To College

Source

University is a fantastic experience for both parent and child. Finally, the student gets the freedom to leave the house and spread their wings. At college, they get the opportunity to meet new people, party and learn. Although parents are often scared and sad, they’re also happy to see their baby grow up into an adult. Plus, it finally gets them out of the house. Hooray!

Jokes aside, higher education is the aspiration for families around the States. It’s a highway to a better life. So, why do some students fail and end up worse off than in the beginning?

Sadly, the freedom and independence can be too much for young minds to handle. As a result, there’s a chance they may make bad lifestyle choices at a very early age. Even though they aren’t in the house anymore, they’re still your child and the parenting role hasn’t finished. Here are the things to watch out for when they leave for college.

Bullying

Bullying is wrongly associated with younger children, usually high schoolers and middle schoolers. It’s as if an imaginary line gets crossed when a kid turns eighteen and scuttles off to university. The reality is far different. The people who targeted victims in the 10th grade will do the same in the freshman year. No one is saying that your son or daughter can’t stick up for themselves, but it’s important to remember that bullying doesn’t discriminate. Signs of bullying include physical and mental scars, as well as an unwillingness to be vulnerable. If your child once loved being involved in social circles, the fact that they are now skeptical is a warning sign. Try and broach the topic if possible and let them know that they are not alone. They may not talk straight away, yet it’s healthy for them to have an outlet regardless.

Stress

It’s tempting to think that the younger generations have nothing to worry about because they are not old. At college, they can party, socialize and learn in a safe environment without any urgent responsibilities. At least, that’s how people view education after high school. The reality is very stark. Universities are by no means safe places because that goes against the fabric of what they represent. Students have to be challenged on a daily basis to learn and grow and leave a better person. So, the competition is fierce. Also, never forget that their short and long-term future rides on their grades. As a result, the pressure to hit deadlines and targets can be nerve-racking. Stress manifests itself in different ways, yet be on the lookout for depression. After all, this can accelerate into full-blown mental issues.

Source

Over-Partying

Now that there is no one there to ground them, the shackles are off and they are in charge. Do you want to come to a kegger tonight? Hell yes! Who wouldn’t?! Look, blowing off steam and having a few drinks is by no means the end of the world. Teenagers will always want to let loose and in many ways, a party is a perfect outlet. However, this culture can lead to problems. For one thing, studies often take a hit as they are too tired and hung over to go to class. As worrying to parents is the link between millennials and substance abuse in society. Millennials are not addicted across the board, yet studies show that prescription pills are a problem. Mixed with stress, drinking too much can lead to health problems.

Slacking Off

Sometimes, the reason for coasting at college is quite simple – because they can. Let’s face facts and admit that teens aren’t the hardest working bunch. Granted, they did well in high school but they had their parents pushing them to succeed. Now, there is no one to answer to but #1 which is very dangerous. Students have blown off going to classes because they assume they can coast by and still graduate with a high-class degree. They can’t unless they are Rain Man smart. Symptoms include a blasé attitude to work as well as constantly watching TV and never studying.

The Wrong Choice

Every parent wants their kid to go to school and graduate with honors. Although it’s the dream, it’s not always how life plays out. There’s a chance that your child may hate university and want to drop out and do something else. They may never bring it up, though, out of fear of your reaction. If they are unhappy, ask them why and promise them you won’t get mad. Dropping out may be the best thing they can do depending on the circumstances.

How is your son/daughter coping at college?

Should You Wait Until You Know Everything To Start A Business?

Most people have dreams of starting their own business. However, for many of those people, a dream is all it will ever be. This is because the majority of people believe that they need to know absolutely everything before starting a business. It seems to make sense, right? You want to start a business in a certain industry so you should wait until you feel knowledgeable; until you feel ready.

Should you wait until you know everything to start a business? Read on to find out…

Should You Wait Until You Know Everything?

In short: no. You’ll never know everything there is to know about starting a business, and there certainly isn’t a ‘perfect time’. You’ll never suddenly get a feeling that smacks you in the gut and says ‘right, it’s time!’. You’ll likely always have some kind of reservation and anxiety about it. It would be strange if you didn’t. However, it’s important to remember that the best things usually happen when we step outside of our comfort zones. Which is why you should start before you’re ready.

source

Start Before You’re Ready

Starting before you’re ready doesn’t sound smart, does it? It sounds a bit risky. However, this is why most people don’t start the business they’ve always dreamed of. They never feel ready, and this means they never start. They always wonder ‘what if’. It doesn’t matter if you don’t know everything there is to know about vertical storage tanks polyethylene right now. All that matters is you put together a plan and take baby steps to achieve your goals. When it comes to it, you can hire people who know more than you – which is what all of the best entrepreneurs do!

So, what’s more important to consider than whether you know everything and feel ‘ready’?

Is this a big enough opportunity – without a big market, your success is limited.

Is this idea meaningful enough – you’re going to risk everything, and yes, you risk failing even if you step out of your comfort zone and do your best. All of the best entrepreneurs have failed at some point. This means that it better be for an idea you’re proud of. Maybe it’s not something you do all the time in your spare time, but it should be something that gives you a sense of pride.

Who are your target audience –  Stop worrying about whether you’re ready or not, and instead, seek out your target users and listen to them. What do they think about your product? Your design? What does your target audience want out of a product or service like the one you’re offering? Make sure you learn everything there is to know and then start your business based on what you’ve learned. Knowing that there’s a market for your product and what your audience actually want is far more valuable than waiting until you feel ready or know everything there is to know!

Don’t wait until ‘the time is right’ or you’ll be waiting forever!

Trying to make more savings is really essential for the future and a great way of helping you improve your finances moving forward.

  1. Slash Your Bills

Let’s be clear, bills always need to be paid, that is pretty much unavoidable these days. If you are looking to slash your bills and pay less each month, this means looking at switching suppliers. Many energy companies offer discounted rates for new customers so it might be worth changing your provider every year or so. This is a great way of making savings and ensuring that you improve and increase your bank balance as much as you possibly can.

  1. Downsize Your Home

If you want to get a bit more drastic, it might be time to think about downsizing your home. There are so many benefits to doing this, and, if space is not too much of a concerned for you, this is the perfect chance to do that. By downsizing, you can make some terrific savings, and you’ll have money in the bank from your sale to help tide you over. What You Need to Know About Recovery from Addiction

Whether you are in recovery from an addiction yourself or helping a friend or family member recover from their own addiction, there are a few things that you will need to know to make the process go as smoothly as it possibly can. There are so many things that people don’t realize about recovery addiction that it can really throw them off when it comes up.

With that in mind, here are a few things anyone touched by   should know about recovery:

Rehab is only the start

Getting into a good rehab and recovery centre like the Canadian Health Recovery Centre is only the first step in the journey out of addiction. Rehab will help you to gain control of your addiction, and hopefully, kick the drugs, but the period after rehab is even more important and must be managed with even more care, You cannot afford to be lax in managing your recovery if you want to be successful.

Addiction is a Disease of the Brain

When times are tough, it’s always worth remembering that addiction is a disease of the brain. It is not down to poor morals or a lack of care about one’s life. IT will probably need to be managed for many years to come and it will take a commitment that will sometimes be difficult to maintain, Treat those with addictions just like you would people with cancer or heart disease when it comes to the understanding your show them.

Addiction Has No Cure

Addiction has no cure and as such individuals in recovery will always be in remission, and should, therefore, avoid any situations in which they may be tempted to use again, as best they can.

Developing a New Addiction is a Real Possibility

When people give up one addiction, it is not unusual for them to replace it with another one, albeit one which is usually less harmful. For example, many heroin addicts get a taste for sugar, some ex-alcoholics take to gambling, or maybe they will take up shopping or overeating to fill the void that drugs and alcohol once filled. It’s important to be aware of this so that you can see what you’re doing when you’re doing it and work to change/manage your behavior so that it is not too harmful to your life.

You Need to Be Active in Recovery

You cannot overcome an addiction with good intentions, Even in the recovery stage, you need to be very proactive about looking after your physical and mental health and avoiding the temptation that will take you back to your drug of choice. Attending AA meetings, meditating, using more positive affirmations, taking up hobbies and surrounding yourself with positive clean friends are all good ways of doing this, but feel free to think of your own.

It’s okay to find recovery that works best for you. For instance, a gambling addict will need specialized help compared to someone with a drug habit, even though the underlying mechanisms of the addiction are similar. The same can go for those who may need others to relate to their situation, such as VA alcohol rehab services that allow for a veteran’s particular need of support.

It Is Possible

Perhaps, the most important thing you need to know about recovery from addiction is that it is possible. Many people have successfully kicked the habit and gone on to lead healthy, happy and more productive lives and there’s no reason why you or your loved one cannot be one of them, Sure, there may be relapses along the way, and plenty of tough times to come, but if you keep working towards your goal of being addiction-free, you will get there in the end.

Is a Technical Career Right For You?

Technical working is about getting to grips with the nitty gritty details of computing, engineering or another technical industry like those. It could be the kind of job that’s right for you if you’re not yet sure which job is the ideal one for you. There are some things that you should think about and ask yourself before you decide that a technical career is right for you there. We’re going to discuss some of those issues and details right now, so read on.

Are You Good Under Pressure?

Many technical jobs involve working under pressure. If you’re handling heavy machinery or creating things that are going to be used in practical situations once the products are sold on, you need to get things right. There are often many dangers, not just to yourself but to others too, that you have to be aware of. If you think you can handle that pressure, that’s an important first step.

It’s a Good Move if You’re Bored of Your Desk

If you’re the kind of person that’s been working an office job but if find it completely boring and unfulfilling, it might be a good idea for you to explore the technical and hands-on options out there. By stepping away from your desk, you could discover all kinds of new and interesting possibilities that will help you to make the most of your work life.

Talk to Business and Professionals

It’s worth looking at what other businesses do so you can understand exactly what goes into doing a technical job. There are places like http://www.rotair.com/ that offer plenty of specific information about working in a particular niche. Do as much research as you can, and then talk to people doing the jobs you’re interested in and approach relevant businesses too. It’s a good way to learn more about what these jobs are all about.

Seek the Right Training or Qualifications

For many technical careers, you’re required to seek training and certified qualifications. These are what companies in particular industries look for before hiring people. It not only helps them to make sure that they are hiring people with the right skills and abilities; it also helps them fire people who can do the work safely.

Keep on Discovering

Finally, you need to try to keep discovering new things and new ideas that might serve you well in a technical career. Never stop trying to learn about where you go next and how you go about achieving more. If your mind is closed off to all of these interesting and important things, you will only cause yourself more difficulty when it comes to making this career switch.

If you’re convinced that your career lies in a technical vocation, you should go for it. Why spend your working life tied to a desk when there are so many other things you could be out there doing and enjoying a whole more than your current office job. You can make this happen if you want to.

Working On The Road – Tips To Keep On Top Of Things

Pexels

We all have duties, responsibilities, and an income to find. Some of us have the privilege of working remotely, be that for an office or for our own freelance name. This flexibility allows us to work while traveling, which might be essential to our job. However, despite cloud storage and many other conveniences supporting us in the modern day, you can still find yourself left high and dry if things aren’t working as correctly as you’d hoped. Luckily there are ways around this, ways to ensure you can back up your work and stay the reliable colleague you are.

We’d recommend the following at an absolute minimum:

Back Up Your Files

Unfortunately, we are not in the days where we never have to worry about the security or placement of our files. Even with the most comprehensive and secure cloud storage plan, you can never be 100% certain you can access all of this on the road. Bad WiFi connections, bad 4G connections or even an issue with your cloud client can occur without warning, effectively locking you out of the work you need. This is why it’s always important not only to also save files locally, but on small extra storage spaces. This could be through two USBs and a hard drive. Also, keeping an SSD on hand can be effective, as these have no moving parts and as such are more reliable. You cannot put a price on keeping your files safe, and so while storage spaces can be expensive, they are more than worth it.

Remotely Connect

For studio professionals or even those who need to simply access files from home, it can be a real boon to remotely connect to your desktop when needs be. Either leaving your computer on idle or asking someone at home to wake it up, and knowing ways to remotely connect can help you begin working in another place entirely. It might be that you have all the competencies with your laptop, but you need to access a forgotten Photoshop file before you can be. It might be that you need access to your home security suite. It might be you need to use 2-factor desktop authentication from home to log into a VPN remotely. There are many reasons and benefits for knowing how to do this, so we’d recommend you learn to right away.

Find A Great Data Plan

It’s essential to keep a fantastic data plan, and pay for all it offers. This is because remote workers should never consider WiFi to be the only bastion of their connectivity to the internet. Those connections can often be shoddy or unsafe, and so keeping a plan that allows your mobile device to use unlimited internet access on 4G can truly help you out of a bad situation. It might not be as fast as some WiFi packages, but it’s certainly reliable and with a VPN,can stay secure.

With these tips, you can be sure that working on the road is more of a realistic venture, and before long this could be your new default method of completing your daily tasks.

How To Feel Better About Yourself

Did you know that you can change how you feel in an instant?

See, you can’t control the outside world but you can control your thoughts, feeling and actions – meaning you can shift your focus to encourage more positive thoughts, or you can shift your perception to see things in a more helpful light… which, in turn will lead to you feeling more positive, which will subsequently lead to you taking more positive and empowered action.

Yet, if it’s true that we can change how we feel in an instant, why do so many people stay stuck in a state of misery, depression, anxiety, stress or upset?  Why do so many people stay “stuck in a moment they can’t get off” as U2 put it?

The answer is that we have emotional habits that are second nature to us, they run almost automatically, as they operate from the subconscious rather than conscious mind.

A habit, according to Wikipedia, is a routine of behaviour that is repeated regularly and tends to occur subconsciously. Now, if you want to change how you feel about your life, or yourself, you need to develop better habits.

One the best habits you can develop to living a happier life is to embrace the paradigm of loving yourself; meaning rather than beating yourself up the whole time you accept yourself for all that you are, focus on the good in yourself, and practice self-care rather than self loathing.

It’s not just internal though, indeed, one of the best ways to feel better about yourself is to contribute to others as this gets you out of your internal world and shifts your focus to the external, which on the basis that people when feeling down, tend to ruminate and get ‘stuck in their own thoughts’ is a good idea.

Whether you merely help an old lady across the road, or do something more structured such as to volunteer in mississauga, when you start to shift your focus away from your problems and to helping other people you will be rewarded exponentially in terms of the shift that takes place within your psychology and physiology.  Indeed, it’s been reported that many people experience something known as a “helpers high” due to the endorphins released when you help another person.

In addition, here are three tips to help you feel better about yourself and your life up from the inside out rather than the outside in.

  1. STOP TRYING TO FILL THE VOID

It’s very easy to chase after external things (e.g. spending sprees) or people, in order to fill the void within – but the best way to fill the void you feel is to find nourishing ways to flesh out your life that provide meaning and fulfilment.

  1. STOP DOING THAT WHICH HURTS YOU

If we were to consider the metaphor of back pain; there’s usually a trigger that causes this pain  – similarly, there are activities you engage in on an emotional level that trigger emotional pain.

  1. GET RID OF NEGATIVE PEOPLE

Negative energy is contagious, it rubs off on you, so if you’re around negative people you will become negative yourself.  The trick therefore, is to get around positive people and allow their energy to rub off on you meaning you will energetically be pulled up rather than dragged down.

Short But Sharp Practices To Look After Your Frame Of Mind In This Busy World

We all know that we need to look after ourselves, especially now with so many different factors impacting our frame of mind, from the much talked about fear of missing out (FOMO) due to things like social media, but also, the stresses we’re all feeling with jobs that overwork us, but underpay us. We can feel the pinch in every part of our lives now, which is why it’s important for us to look after the one thing that matters: our frame of mind. You don’t have to look far to see the impacts of depression and anxiety on adults of all ages, and even children now. So, being in an age of the quick fix, are there any short but sharp practices we can do to look after our frame of mind, and not admit defeat to these common mental health problems?

Look At Your Self-Image

If you are working a job that dents away at your pride every time you walk in through the main entrance, after a while, you can begin to feel like there’s a cloud hovering over your sense of sanity. This turns into negative thoughts and can contribute to a low self-image. When we feel like this, we can trick our brain into kick-starting a positive attitude again. This might sound too simple to be true, but, from a scientific perspective, your brain is unable to tell the difference between a real thought and an imagined one. This is why many athletes or business people use self-talk. It’s not something that is relegated to the movies, it’s definitely worth trying, even though we might feel foolish at the very outset, but the more you do it, the better you will feel, and therefore this positive attitude will compound itself. The other way of improving your self-image is to look at what you see in the mirror. If you find that you look tired, sleep more, or take more pride in your appearance. It’s reinvigorating if you feel in a negative state of mind, but you see yourself dressed sharply. And sometimes, even if you work in a professional job where uniforms are standard, such as the nursing profession, you can wear cute nursing shoes that are stylish, yet practical. Taking pride in your appearance is a very simple way to retrain your negative state of mind and turn it into a positive. We all have days where we don’t feel attractive, but there are ways around this. And if you can trick yourself into feeling great, then you will feel great.

Take A Mental Break

If you work a stressful job, or you have a stressful home life, that temptation to run away is always something that hangs over us. But if you feel like life is a non-stop treadmill, you need to get off it from time to time, so you can rest and recuperate. Sometimes, we can overwork our minds, so we end up feeling run down by life in general. And this is where taking a break, no matter how short it is, from our daily pressures, gives us the time and space to re-center. You don’t have to go on vacation to the Algarve; you can spend 10 minutes in the morning focused on something that you love. If you feel like you’re giving too much of yourself to other people, it’s time to recapture your sense of self. This means taking time away. Go away on the weekend, or participate in hobbies that you can engage with by yourself. Whatever makes you happy, make sure it’s about you.

Look At The Big Picture

If you’ve been feeling like this for some time, is it a short-term sacrifice for long-term gain? For example, if you are going through a difficult period in work, but it’s with a view to getting a promotion, or gaining valuable experience so you can get to the career you want, reminding yourself of the bigger picture can give you that sense of focus again. In life, we can feel like we lost track of our goals, or we didn’t have any in the first place. If you haven’t got any goals, and you’re unhappy for what appears to be no reason, it’s important to examine the bigger picture, are you in the best place for your frame of mind? If not, then it’s time to undertake a major overhaul of your core beliefs in life.

Are You Fueling Yourself?

We can all feel under the weather, tired, or even exhausted, physically and mentally. So, are you giving your body and brain what it needs? You might have lifestyle habits that are not what your body craves. While it’s easy to say you should eat a healthy diet, sometimes we don’t notice what is actually bad for us until we cut something out. So if you find yourself constantly tired, is it because of a poor diet choice, or is it something else in your life? But the diet is the best place to begin. Because it’s something we can have immediate control over. Now, so many of us are intolerant to wheat, dairy, nuts, etc. So look at taking something out of your diet that you might consider to be the culprit, for at least a month, and then see if you feel any different. If you don’t have the right fuel for your body, it’s unsurprising that you’re struggling. And, it’s important to remember that if your body is not functioning properly, neither is your mind. There’s a lot of talk about the blood-brain barrier, where certain foods can have a detrimental effect on your brain, and this is something lots of us have to think about. It’s the age-old expression, you are what you eat. So if you are someone who lives unhealthily, and doesn’t undertake any exercise, it’s hardly a surprise that you’re not running on optimum. So make sure you fuel yourself properly, and this also means making sure you’re eating enough for your energy expenditure. While there’s a lot of focus on and eating and dieting, this might not be the right thing for you.

Looking after your frame of mind in this busy world isn’t just about a few simple exercises, but it’s an ongoing practice. By looking at yourself image, having a break, as well as reassessing the bigger picture, in conjunction with the adequate fuel, you have a solid baseline in which to begin.

Public Transport Is Convenient But It’s Not Always Safe

You would think by now that due to so many people owning their own forms of transport, that public transport would have begun to slowly become a thing of the past. It’s perhaps going to be the last dinosaur that anyone can scoff at and laugh when electric cars also become shuttle services. Perhaps that’s a little ambitious even for the technologically wonderful times we live in right now. So many public transports have another few decades left in it; at least in the current form that it’s in. So for those who don’t have cars, cannot afford a taxi every day, and simply live too far from their work to bicycle every morning, for now, public transport is incredibly convenient. You hear all kinds of stories about what goes on in public transport. Running into goons and horrible abusive people isn’t as common as the hearsay tales might lead you to believe. However, it’s fair to point out that violence is an issue that commuters see and sometimes even experience. It’s not always other passengers that are going to be your biggest threat though.

Riding the fast line

Trams are fantastic forms of transport for those who live in big cities. They have their own grounded rails and lines so they can zigzag through traffic. Because they’re electronically powers, they have great acceleration, and this means that in a crowded city, they can perform short, sharp dashes from one stop to the next. You’re much more likely to beat a red light sitting in a tram than you are a bus. Trams also have their own right of way, which means they get priority movement from all the other road users, be it cyclists, cars, buses, trucks, taxis and horse carriages. You would think that a vehicle the size of a train would be menacing to drivers so they would stay out of the way but unfortunately, sometimes they don’t. Obviously, a heavy vehicle takes time to stop, and many collisions with cars happen at moderate speeds. This can cause passengers to be thrown around the tram, hit their head and face onto metal bars and through windows. If you’re standing up when this occurs, you can fall down and injure yourself further. So best to keep a sharp eye out and have at least on hand holding onto something solid.

Bus injury

The thing about buses is, they don’t have seatbelts even though they should. When a driver loses control of such a large vehicle, momentum builds up until you meet an equivalent force to stop it. This is why out of control buses just sweep aside cars they hit like they were children’s toys. Most cities employ bus companies to be their public transport service. When something goes wrong, and you’re seriously hurt by let’s say a cta bus crash, who can you blame for this? An injury lawyer is someone who deals with your personal harm in the judicial sense. Getting hurt is not expressed via word of mouth in a courtroom. The lawyer compiles your cases with doctor reports about the medical condition you were in due to your injuries. They look at the cta bus operator’s reports and spot the signs of negligence and malpractice.

Public transport is still a necessary service that governing authorities must supply to their citizens. However be warned, they’re not always the safest option. Take care of yourself while using them and be aware of both passengers and the transport risks.

How to Help a Loved One Recover After an Accident

Accidents happen all the time but somehow we never think that they will happen to us. While you might take every precaution when driving or at work, you simply can’t predict what other people might do. Worse, there’s nothing you can do to prevent a loved one getting caught in an accident.

Though accidents are never pleasant, you can help make the aftermath much easier for your loved one. While they may struggle to make any real decisions about their care or not know whether they can get compensation or how to get it, you can step in to make sure that they get the best treatment and care possible.

Choose the Right Hospital

If your loved one requires surgery after their accident, you should look at which hospital will be right for them. Contrary to what you might think, the right hospital may not be a world-famous teaching hospital but a smaller rural hospital with excellent ratings. When you are helping them choose where to go, have a look at the data produced by the hospitals and don’t be mislead by advertising.

Surgery can be quite scary so another factor you should think of is how close you will be to the hospital. If you need to travel and stay in a hotel close-by this will add a lot to your expense whereas if you can choose somewhere closer to home you will be more comfortable.

Get a Lawyer’s Advice

In many cases, where there is an accident, there is someone at fault. Perhaps the accident was at work where someone did not perform their due diligence or maybe your loved one was in a road accident on our ever more dangerous roads. Whatever it was, it is worth contacting a lawyer to see if you could claim compensation – especially to pay for earnings, necessary surgeries and other damages.

If you have a family lawyer, you could contact them for a recommendation, otherwise you should search for a lawyer with plenty of experience in dealing with your type of case. For example, if your loved one was hit by a drunk driver, you might contact a practice with lots of experience dealing with drunk driving injuries as listed under our practice areas.

Be There No Matter What

As your loved one recovers and life returns to your more regular routines, it is important that you also watch out for mental health issues that may appear or flare up. Post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety may all appear after an accident. The sooner you notice and start treating a mental health condition, the easier it will be to recover from.

After finding the best professionals to help support and fight for your loved one, the very best thing you can do is be there for them. Having an accident can be terrifying and recovery is an isolated process in many cases. Just knowing that you will come and visit as well as hold their hand through the hard bits will make all the difference in the world.
