Clear The Foggy Haze That Surrounds E-Commerce

online-shop-1461915186xq7

Most people can get online and start building a website with an easy tool like Wix or Squarespace. But, when it comes to getting into the world of online shopping, most people are too scared of the unknown to be able to get started. It’s understandable, though. When you’re dealing with people’s bank or personal information, you gain some huge responsibilities. You have to make sure that you’re operating correctly, to make sure that you’re handling data legally.

This world of mystery is made much easier with the help of a tool like Magento. Magento primarily acts as your payment gateway; to connect your website up with customer’s bank accounts. But, it also has the facility to host your entire shopping experience, from product listings to checkout pages. Most people will run a hybrid setup with Magento; with the store handled by Magento, and the rest of the site developed separately.

Obviously, a tool with so much power has to be used correctly. If you have little to no experience in web design, it’s best to leave the job to a professional. The odds are, though, that you’ll be able to find a Magento agency in your area, with ease. But, even once the site is fully developed, there’s a few things that you need to consider.

  • Security

Of course, using a tool like Magento ensures that your checkout process is as secure as possible. But, your website still might not look that way. When you visit most websites, you will see “https” at the start of the page URL, at the top of the screen. This shows that a website is securely encrypted using SSL. If you don’t have SSL encryption on your site, you may find that certain browsers will warn users not to visit the site. This is a surefire way to lose out on customers and damage your company’s reputation.

Most website hosts will let you buy an SSL certificate directly from them. Once you’ve bought it, it will automatically protect your site. If you have to get it from elsewhere, though, you’ll need to follow the instructions they give you to attach it to your site. Sometimes, Magento won’t work without a valid SSL certificate.

800px-rusty_padlock

  • Hosting

The next step in your E-Commerce journey is to check your hosting. When you purchase hosting for a website, you’ll usually be given several options. These options will include different amounts of storage space, bandwidth, and other features/add-ons. As your website gets more popular, you will start to use more bandwidth. If you don’t have enough to support the users accessing the site, some won’t be able to load the website, or they’ll have it load very slowly. This will make your website look very unprofessional. As your website grows, the data that you store will grow with it. This means that you’ll also need more storage space in the future. You need to keep an eye on your hosting at all times, to make sure that you’re not running out of resources.

Hopefully, this will make you more confident to get out there and build your own E-Commerce website. All you need now is a good business idea!

KEEP TRACK OF YOUR HEALTH

From apps that track your general health, to apps that can measure your heartbeat, the health app world is vast. You no longer need to worry your doctor with every health concern. Remember that you should still visit your doctor if you think there’s something seriously wrong. Even so, it can be reassuring to get that diagnosis while you wait for an appointment!

HELP WITH YOUR HEATING

How many times have you wished you could turn your heating on before you got home? With wifi thermostats, you can! Connect your thermostat to your phone and put an end to your heating worries. Wifi thermostats aren’t just convenient either. They can also help you save on heating bills by turning themselves on and off depending on the heat in your home. Who wouldn’t want a smart heating system? Just think how nice it would be to turn your heat on from the warmth of your bed in the mornings. Check out any available thermostat reviews so you can choose the best one for you.

THERMAL IMAGING

Talking of heat, you could download an app that allows you access to thermal imaging on your phone. If you’re losing money on your heating bills, download one of these bad boys and take note of where you’re losing heat in your home. This app will help you see any window seals that need replacing or any gaps you should be covering up. Making sure your home is as warm as possible will save you a lot of money on heating. Not to mention, it’ll help you keep warm in the future!

Make the job of checking easier by letting technology do the work for you. These apps have the bonus of putting your mind at ease that all your checks are as thorough as possible!

Bringing It All Together: How Savvy Consultants Keep Tabs On Their Business

These days, it seems as if everybody has got advice for consultants. Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around? The problem for many consultants is that most aren’t actually trained in the art of doing business. Yes, they’re excellent at what they do, whether it’s education, finance or looking after cats, but most don’t have much of an idea about what it actually takes to run a consulting business, besides being a fantastic consultant, of course.

Focus On Relationships, Not Revenues

7269336936_cf1faf4254_n

Flickr

One of the first things that consults need to realise is that the value of their business is entirely based on the relationships that they forge. That means that when it comes to new clients, it’s always best to listen first, think and then start negotiating a price. The reasons for doing this are both practical and political. Practically speaking, you want to be able to make an assessment of the kind of services that they will need. Doing this will allow you to come up with a price that is actually suitable for the work that they want you to carry out. And politically speaking, it’s always best to build a rapport well before going in for the hard sell. Businesses and customers are way more likely to trust you, and pay you, once they’ve seen how reasonable, personable and qualified you are.

Use Software, Just Like The Pros

Top entrepreneurs know that the key to a successful business is nailing the process. The best businesses have slick processes, excellent communication and an understanding of what is going on in all four corners of their enterprise. In the past, getting this right required a tight-knit team and a lot of experience. But with the rise of multi-channel solutions software, organising a business has become significantly easier. Being able to keep tabs on all of the channels you use to reach out to clients is important if you’re going to maximise opportunities in each of those areas. And so now many consulting firms are using dashboards to organise their communication from a single hub and coordinate their messages.

Stay Supremely Flexible

Many consultants like the idea of getting paid monthly retainers for their work. As a result, they deliberately seek out clients who are willing to pay them month after month. But the monthly retainer somehow defeats the purpose of consulting services. The idea of consulting is to go into a business or a person’s life and solve a problem. It’s not to hang around indefinitely, collecting payment at the end of the month.

The best consultants ultimately end their retainer deals and look for new projects because they eventually solve the problem. They understand that business waxes and wanes. And so they use these opportunities to cultivate new networks and find new people to work with. Often it’s worth building relationships with other highly qualified professionals from industry who can offer their experience and perspective to a particular project. Don’t be afraid to reach out to others if you need to.

Be The Change You Want To See In The New Year

With new year fast approaching, there’s no better time to look towards changing the way you live. We’re going to look at new year resolutions you can make to ensure you live a fuller life. We all want to be happier, and making a few changes can go a long way towards that goal. Take the time, while making your resolutions, to consider what changes would help you. Here are a few things worth considering.

BE KIND

Kindness goes a long way. Treating people around you with kindness will help you to be kinder to yourself. Instead of walking past the homeless, take the time to stop and chat. If you aren’t comfortable giving money, why not ask if there’s anything you can buy, such as food, etc? Be kinder to the people in your life too. All too often we take our loved ones for granted and forget to value what we’ve got. If you’ve been neglecting your partner, make more of an effort to spend quality time together. If you’ve been short-tempered with your family, change that behavior. It’s surprising how different the world can be when we take the time to practice kindness.

14488562814_4b6a587210_b

Image from Flickr

GET INVOLVED

Getting involved in your community is a type of kindness, but it’s much more involved. Find out what initiatives are in your community, and get involved. Knowing you’re doing what you can will help towards your feeling of satisfaction. Not to mention, it’ll be a significant contribution to the schemes you offer your time to. Is there a local food bank you can donate to? Or, maybe you would like to volunteer. Is there a care home that needs befrienders to spend time with the residents? Think through what you would like to do and find out if your community offers the chance to do it!

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Becoming more environmentally aware is another positive change. The environment is ever in danger, yet we rarely take the time to change bad habits. Use the new year to turn your attention to a greener planet. Learn about environmental issues and make positive changes. Simple things like eating the food you buy can help, as can changing to solar power using companies such as Semper Solaris. Or, something as easy as walking instead of driving can make a huge difference. Not to mention, it’ll make you feel better.

buddhist-481763_960_720

MINDFULNESS

As well as spreading your kindness outwards, it’s important to be kind to yourself. Practicing mindfulness will help you become more aware of how you treat yourself. It’ll help you make your own happiness. We are often more unforgiving of ourselves than anybody, so mindfulness can be a wonderful practice to get to grips with. Maybe spend a little time meditating each day, or start a yoga practice. If you don’t think you have time for either of those, keep things simple. Even taking the time to appreciate what’s around you will make a huge difference. Learn to accept yourself in the new year!

A Productive Rant About Your Startup Equipment

tetra_pak_processing_equipment_tetra_lactenso_aseptic

Wikimedia

When you’re starting a new business, you have to consider so many things. But what might weigh most heavily upon your mind is the acquisition of equipment. This isn’t an area you can afford to cut corners on. Make sure you’re dealing with business equipment correctly by using this guide!

Considering the costs

Work equipment is often where most businesses find themselves having to spend the most money. In the long-term, your biggest cost is going to be human labour. But when you’re starting up, the cost of equipment is often a daunting figure. In fact, it’s precisely what puts so many people off of the idea of starting a business!

cost-1174926_960_720

Pixabay

The key is to ensure that you’re prepared for these costs. This is just one of the reasons why a thorough business plan is extremely important. Figuring out everything you’re going to need in terms of equipment is what will ensure you’re aiming at an accurate amount of capital. You’d be surprised how many business owners end up getting less capital than they need.

Safety first

The number one priority in business is making that sweet cash profit, right? No, you already know that’s not the case. The safety of everyone in your workplace takes precedent over absolutely everything else. And if you’re not following the law when it comes to equipment safety, then you could end up ruining your business quicker than you think.

424px-workplace_safety_signs

Wikimedia

You need to keep PUWER in mind. This stands for Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations. There are, of course, many other safety regulations you have to consider. But in terms of equipment, PUWER is what you need to keep in mind. It might be best for you to have professionals who can assess the suitability of your equipment in this regard.

Maintenance

Your equipment is going to require maintenance. This is especially true with the heavy machinery you find in industrial work, mining, and farming. The maintenance you have to give them is almost constant. And you can’t afford to cut corners in this regard, either. If you’re not maintaining them properly, then you run the risk of them breaking down or creating unsafe conditions. And the result of that is not going to be friendly to your wallet.

trench_safety_-_fastening_chains_to_raise_trench_box-2_9250653062

Wikimedia

One of the best things you can do is make sure that operation training is absolutely thorough. The ensures that use, as well as the operation checklist, is always proper. Keeping an eye out for signs of wear is also incredibly important. You have a schedule for maintenance and repair, with sessions being carried out at least every couple of days. This helps ensure longevity and safety.

Data mining

In industry, your equipment can be combined with data mining techniques that can help with their long-term efficiency. You may not have thought that big data could affect your business much. But it’s actually very important in this field. Read more about what everyone is calling “Industry 4.0.” Getting your equipment hooked up to the right data mining equipment could increase efficiency in astounding ways.

It Is Really Possible To Run A Successful Business From Home?

We’ve all heard of people who work from home and run a self-employed business. Often, we get quite jealous as there are plenty of perks to being your own boss and not having to leave the house for work every day. However, when push comes to shove, can you ever be truly successful if you run a business from home? Surely there are obstacles that prevent you from achieving the same level of success as a similar business that isn’t run from home?

Well, in actual fact, you can run a successful business entirely from your home. However, you’ll only achieve success if you run it properly and use some of the tips and tricks listed below:

6845651011_7c65a86ee4_n

(Flickr: https://flic.kr/p/bqVKxH)

Have A Proper Office In Your House

If you try to run a business from your bedroom, then it’s not going to work. Somewhere along the way you’ll hit a barrier or get distracted. What you need to do is create a proper office setting in your home. Converting a spare room or garage/shed is always a popular choice. In fact, it may even be beneficial to pay for a home extension just to create an office. Now, you have a setting where you can be productive and more professional. It’s also a place you can invite clients to if you have important meetings.

Use Technology To Help Your Business Out

There is so much technology out there that can help you run a business from home. We’ve got remote technology that allows you to hire virtual assistants or use cloud computing to collaborate with others. In theory, you can hire a team of employees and work with them using cloud technology without anyone having to leave their home. You’ve even got things like mobile credit card processing tech devices that allow you to accept card payments wherever you are. So, someone could come to your home office and discuss a service then pay for it there and then. Alternatively, a lot of self-employed business ideas involve moving around a lot – like plumbing, hairdressing, etc. With this tech, you can accept card payments on the move. Essentially, technology allows your small business to do everything a big business can.

800px-home_sweet_studio

Pick A Business Idea That Works

The simple fact is, there are some business ideas that are suited to this approach and some that aren’t. I’ve already mentioned a few classic self-employed business ideas in the point above. There are so many other examples of businesses that can be run entirely from home, graphic design and marketing agencies are massive examples. Then, you have some that aren’t suited to this approach as it’s not practical to run a business like that from home. Ideas that require a lot of manpower and loads of space will be restricted when ran from home. So, if you want to enjoy success, you must ensure that your business idea is suited to this style of management.

There you have it, it is possible to run a successful business from home if you follow these tips and tricks. Now, enjoy a happy working life by being your own boss and setting your own rules!

Unbelievable Tricks To Make Any Small Business More Professional

people-woman-coffee-meeting

(Pexels: http://bit.ly/1ZJBKOy)

There’s a big problem facing many small businesses up and down the country. Try as they might they just aren’t taken as seriously as the bigger companies out there. This is because many small businesses don’t appear to be professional. Well, that will change as this article can help any small startup become more professional:

Purchase A Registered Office Address

All small businesses need to register a business address with the government. This is where the government and tax authorities will send all your legal and important documents. If you want to make your business look professional, then you can actually purchase a professional office address. This means you can register your business with an office in a prestigious location. A Registered Office Address will give your business official credibility and legitimacy. Then, you can boast about it by showing the address on your website. People will think your company is so professional and it boosts your image a bit too.

Revitalize Your Point Of Sale

Every small business will have a point of sale where transactions take place. For loads of little companies, this means dealing with a lot of cash in hand. Paying for things by cash is seen as an easy option from a business standpoint. However, from a consumer perspective, it can often make a company seem quite amateur. If you don’t have a card reader at your point of sale, then you’re lagging behind the times. A small business that accepts all payment forms will appear far more professional than one that only accepts cash. So, revitalize your point of sale and start improving the professional image of your business.

website

(Link: http://bit.ly/2fZKL9q)

Make A Modern Website

Too many small businesses cut corners when it comes to web design. They have a basic site with a bit of text and low-budget features. It doesn’t look good, and your small business will look so unprofessional it’s not even funny. This can be reversed if you make a modern website with modern and high-class web design. You should aim to wow people when they click on your site and see how professional it looks. My advice is to look at what the big companies have done and then replicate the design for your business.

Brag About Recommendations, Awards & Previous Work

If your business has received some top recommendations, awards, or worked with big brands, then you have to brag about this. Make sure everyone knows about all these things as it will boost the professional image of your small company. Even if you’re displaying positive customer reviews on your website, it goes a long way to making your company look better. Especially if the reviews state how professional your service is! As for awards, well, if your small business has been in operation for a while then you might have earned some awards. It doesn’t matter how small they are, any awards should be bragged about as much as possible.

Take this advice to heart if you want to establish your small business as a professional organization. Consumers are more likely to be interested in professional and authentic companies as they appear more trustworthy than amateur ones.

Experts Reveal The Top 10 Most Satisfying Jobs

Most of us are bundled into the workplace straight out of school or university. And considering that we’ll work until we’re 60-65, that’s a long stretch if you’re not happy with your job.

If finding a more rewarding career is your New Year’s resolution, here’s where the experts think you should pack up your little cardboard box and move offices to.

  1. Firefighter

A recent survey found that firefighters feel the most rewarded at work. Overall, people whose jobs involve helping or serving others are more satisfied than other professionals. (If you’d prefer to find God than a cat in a tree, clergymen and women came a close second in the survey.)

     2. Neurosurgeon

According to Payscale, the most meaningful job with the highest pay is a neurosurgeon. These brain experts typically earn $381,500 a year. And 97% believe their job is highly meaningful. In fact, medical professions round off the top three on its list, with cardiothoracic surgeons second and anesthesiologists third.

To become a Neurosurgeon requires much education and training and this can be pricey but scholarships, such as the one made available by Dr Timothy Steel, are often offered by organizations, individuals, and schools and universities.

  1. Engineer

After comparing nine different surveys into job satisfaction, The Guardian discovered that engineers are happiest. One chuffed engineer, Dr Esther Hills, says, “I love working in a team…My role also requires a high level of precision and attention to technical detail, which I find very rewarding, and I like being able to work across a wide variety of engineering projects. It all offers something different day-to-day.”

  1. Physical Therapist

Job websites should know a thing or two about employee satisfaction. And according to careercast.com, physical therapists come out top. They improve mobility and alleviate pain in the injured, elderly and those suffering from disease. This jobs ticks the common satisfaction threads of helping people and getting hands on.

  1. Hairdresser

Psychologist Barry Schwartz was surprised to find that hairdressers score so high in job satisfaction. He puts it down to the mix of technical skills, creativity and interacting with clients. In his findings, hospital custodian and carpet maker completed the top three.

  1. Teaching

Business Insider came at the question from a slightly different angle, exploring the college degrees that led to the most satisfying careers. For them, teaching came out top. In particular, early childhood education, where 77% find their job meaningful. Add to that generous holiday, mid-career pay in the £30K region, and plenty of job opportunities available through sites such as Simply Education.

  1. Singers

MyPlan.com quizzed 14,000 of its users about job satisfaction and found that singers hit the highest notes with a 91.7 happiness score. Second and third? Firefighters (again) and aircraft assemblers.

  1. Stay at home parent

Research from the Daily Mail and LV insurance uncovered that stay-at-home moms and dads are happier than those who go out to work. With an 87.2% happiness rating, they enjoy spending time with their children and working from home (parenting is definitely a full-time job). The ability to work from home was another plus point from jobs that score high on their satisfaction stakes.

  1. Florist / gardener

A City & Guilds survey discovered that florists and gardeners felt content in their jobs with a healthy mix of control, getting acknowledged for their work, and nice working conditions. Ah, fresh air, if only!

  1. Farmer

Another outdoorsy one, research from the BBC and Cabinet Office found that farmers are happy with their lot. Despite a salary at the lower end of the jobs above (£24,500 a year), the “outdoor life does seem to be associated with greater personal well-being”.

If you feel inspired by any of the jobs above, now’s the perfect time to start planning your new career, and putting yourself on the path to a healthy, happy working life.

“How Smart Homes Will Revolutionize The Way We Live In 2017

Smart homes. The Internet of Things. Fridges that order your groceries for you. This is all stuff for the future, right?

Well, while we’ve been sleeping, smart machines have snuck into to our homes, and promise to revolutionize how we live. Is it true and does the tech live up to the hype? Let’s look at four devices looking to move in next year.

  1. The smart key

Forget fumbling about for keys, now your smartphone can open your house for you. Companies such as August offer smart entry technology. You can give your friends, family and cleaner (should you be so lucky) access to the app on their phone, too. Plus, your doorbell has a camera, so you can see who’s there and let them in if you’re running late. Oh, and if it’s someone who you don’t want in your home, there’s an alarm, too.

  1. Voice assisted PA

While Apple’s Siri and Microsoft’s Cortana can tell you what you need to know while out and about, the Amazon’s Echo does the same for your home environment. You can ask ‘Alexa’ to play your favourite tune, add something to a shopping list, or give you a weather update before you head out. It’s basically like having a butler without the snooty remarks.

hand-apple-iphone-smartphone

  1. Smart water meters

Already a fixture of homes in London and making their way up North, smart water meters let you monitor your usage online 24/7 – giving you greater control of your bill. You only pay for what you use, they find and fix leaks before you notice them, and you can even see how much your laundry your flat mate does compared with you. Thames Water, says, “Our metered customers tend to use 12% less water on average.” Just remember, there are plenty of low-fi ways to keep down household costs before wiretapping your housemate.

  1. Smart thermostats

Instead of an on/off switch to control your home’s temperature, a smart thermostat lets you heat your house from a smartphone, schedule temperatures for different rooms and times of the day, and they show you how you use your heating.

Some devices even sense if  anyone’s home, adjust room temperature to local weather changes, and use GPS to detect when you’re on your way home – turning up the boiler.

There are already a few on the market, so do a bit of research to find the right one for your home. According to Trusted Reviews, “Tado says that its ‘will pay for itself within a year’ by cutting your heating bills by between 14% and 26%. On average ‘the Nest Thermostat saved 10-12% on heating.’ That’s $131 to $145 per year according to them, and payback in under two years. British Gas says the Hive ‘could save you up to £150 a year’ while Netatmo claim a 37% drop in energy use. Honeywell estimate a whopping 40% saving with their advanced Evohome multi-zone system.”

Before you get too excited, there is a lot that can go wrong with smart technology and home automation, so don’t rush in without doing your homework.

pexels-photo-169915

Worried that smart technology will invade your home and take away from its, well, homeliness? Thankfully, these devices are discreet and you’ll only notice when you want to. Whether that’s picking up pre-ordered groceries from your doorstep, walking into your home without fumbling for keys, or sitting down to a nice cosy room.
