A lot of people don’t really start thinking about how their current life is affecting their career until they’re already well and truly in a routine at work. Then, the trouble becomes that they might be kept so busy by that work life that it becomes hard to see their career. But you can still find the next step if you can’t see past all that paperwork.

See what your employer can offer

Perhaps you might like the industry you’re in. You just want a bit of progression or even a lateral move. If that’s the case, talk to your employer or your boss. Ask them about what other positions are opening, to keep you in mind, and see what kind of training or career development they have on offer. You need to be able to identify when your current job is getting into a rut and your bosses simply don’t care about investing in you. Otherwise, you might be stuck there waiting years for the golden opportunity that just isn’t coming.

Find education on your own terms

If they’re not offering anything at work, then what can you do? You can begin by getting an idea of a direction you want to move in. From there, it’s all about getting the education and training that can make the move real. In a busy schedule, most traditional options simply won’t fit with your schedule. But thanks to the internet, education on your schedule is becoming more and more freely available. You can find the pace that works with your job, whether it’s night classes from home or a weekly digest at the end of the week. There are few career-relevant skills that can’t be taught online anymore.

Focus on yourself, not the job

It’s easy to let your job define you. It’s what you spend a lot of your day doing. But that can make it hard to focus on selling yourself and your career. Branding your own skills and what you have to offer any company is important. Most important is thinking about the skills and achievements you’ve accomplished at work. It might all seem very common and mundane to you, but phrased right on a resume, it can be a lot more impactful. You just have to make it attractive and relevant to other employers.

Don’t push yourself to the brink

Remember to breathe. If you’re having trouble handling the career search as well as your job, then you have to beware. If you’re always feeling tired, becoming late for work more often, or finding it hard to switch off at night, you might be sacrificing too much for your career. Take it easy. So long as you’re making progress, you’re not wasting time.

Don’t let yourself get caught in the spiral of your work life keeping you from a career. Take the steps, whether internally or externally, to transform your work life and to make yourself a much better fit for the career that you want not the job that you have.

I’ve heard a saying which goes something like this: “To make a mistake, have an employee handle it, but, if you really want to have it screwed up, have a manager do it.”

Well, in some cases, if not many, this is true. And sometimes the owner knows even less, especially in a large company.

I’ve seen this first hand. I saw a small business recently, where the owner had to take over some duties from a few people who’d left the small business suddenly. The owner did a decent job overall, but clearly had forgotten some things and a low-level employee had to “re-show” him some of the ropes. So it turned out ok.

But, this shows how business owners, and big executives, need to know, or re-learn, as the case may be, as much of the workings of the business as possible, especially if the company is a small business.

Though it may be impossible for large company executives and CEO’s to know all or even most of the workings of their companies, large companies do have the luxury of having many employees, who at least have an idea of what should be done, so the chances are good that they will have people to come in and take over for suddenly missing employees.

But a small business doesn’t have that luxury. If they only have one counter person or warehouse person or parts person, and the owner hasn’t kept up or has considered himself or herself too busy to take even one day to check out the inner workings of the business, there could be a real problem if a key employee has to leave suddenly for whatever reason.

A business owner could find himself at the front counter when the regular counter person suddenly leaves. If that owner has forgotten the part numbers, or how to work the computer or billing system, or if it is a new one, completely different from that which he may have once used, what then?

And if the business is a fast food joint, it’s a good idea if there’s more than one person in the company who can cook in short order fashion. An empty kitchen serves no food and will have no customers.

If that owner has kept up, then chances are, things will go better until a replacement person is hired.

Also, a plus to the owner’s “visiting” all of the “areas” of the company from time to time may show that owner just how valuable his or her employees really are.

So, know your business to keep that business running, and may you have success!

Some things take longer to work out than others, especially if you’ve never done them before. Coming to terms with finances, admin, accounts and everything that goes hang in hand with your new venture is a daunting time, but one that should be taken on with a certain amount of optimism if you’re to finish in a good place. There are some things which can be done in an easier way, however, if you’re wanting to cut down on all of the tasks and simplify your processes.

Get Your Messages In One Place

We’re moving fast past the world of email. Everything is happening in real-time now, including conversations with customers and clients. If you don’t use Kik online or another web-messaging service, it’s time to immerse yourself in this new world. It logs onto your phone, so you will be able to keep the conversations going even if you’re stepping away from your computer at any point. In a world where we are expecting answers straight away, this can be useful to touch base with those who are requesting your attention and services.

Outsource

Outsourcing isn’t cheating! It’s simply finding a more effective way to get things done. If this means that you have to supply other people with some work, where’s the bad in that? What you need to focus on is the revenue-generating jobs that are to be completed within your startup or business. If you are wasting time trying to get your accounts in order or sending out promotional emails, you’d be better off hiring a professional who can do it for you in half the time and for half of the cost – at least, in most cases, this is true. You will be one of many people who are getting in touch with the niche freelancers, so don’t think that they won’t be looking to get your work done ASAP; you’re usually part of a very long queue!

Motivate

If you’re not motivating yourself to get your work done, there is no point in taking up a job like this. Working in an employed environment with other people, you can’t see the benefits of having them there to spur you on, of having targets to meet from those who are in a position above you and generally cultivating motivation from around the office. There is nobody else playing this game but you; if you can’t keep up with what you’ve got to do, it’s time to take a step back. Ways to motivate yourself come from different sources and it all depends on the individual; some like working to tight deadlines and the rush of adrenaline from submitting something in just in time, while others choose to reward themselves with a treat like a small holiday or luxury item that they have been coveting for getting the job done. Whatever it is that you need to get through, definitely use it.

The pros of studying

Firstly, there are thousands of degree choices that relate to business. For instance, a business management online degree program is easy to find and there are several advantages over visiting a traditional school. It’s cheaper, can be done from the comfort of your own home, and you can still receive financial aid to pay for it. The only drawback is that there are still some requirements. For example, if you skipped high school then you might be required to revisit your past studies or take a foundation course to brush up on your skills.

Studying also prepares you for a lot of potential issues in the future. You’ll learn all about failures that real entrepreneurs have made and how they overcame those issues, and you’ll also have plenty of real-world experience to practice with before investing in your own business. Studying also enables you to network with figureheads in the industry. Since you’ll be in a class with others, you’ll also have colleagues (or potential rivals) to start businesses with as partners.

The cons of studying

One of the major drawbacks is the cost. Studying is expensive and unless you’re able to secure financial aid or have a lot of savings, expect to save up a lot of money or even work while you study to obtain your degree.

Business is also an ever-changing landscape; you can’t conquer it with a textbook that’s a decade old and you can’t plan for future situations that you don’t know. Business is all about reacting to trends and understanding how the market flows, which is why it’s important to get real-world experience. Although most degrees offer some kind of experience and real-world practice, it’s ultimately still going to be different from starting up your own business.

The pros of starting early

As mentioned before, the idea of failing faster is one that you can apply to starting up a business without study. As long as you keep a diary or a log of your failures and study them, you can avoid them in the future and create a business off the back of your experiences. This does mean you’ll be spending a little more money on starting up a business and investing into it, but it’s still far cheaper than paying for an education.

Starting a business also means you can play with different ideas and react to market trends. If you see an opportunity while you’re studying, it’ll be difficult to invest in starting up a business to take advantage of it. However, if you’re just waiting for an opportunity, then it’s much easier to react if you aren’t already invested in something. Starting a business early also allows you more freedom to do what you want and network with people who are relevant to your industry. Because of this, you can pursue a career in an industry you personally enjoy instead of being funneled into something you’ve learned during your study.

The cons of starting early

Simply put, you still need to study but it’s going to be unguided study. You’ll have to look around on websites and read articles and blog posts to get your bearings, and there’s no telling what kind of outdated information is out there. Due to this, it’s hard to actually get started and you’ll also need some funds to start up a company and invest in things like equipment, employees or even just a website.

Without proper guidance, it can be difficult to learn from your mistakes as well. You might realize that you’re not getting enough customers, but do you know why? Probably not. It takes a lot of experience and some analytical skill in order to examine the problems in your business, so make sure you’re prepared to fail and make sure you’re ready to study in your own time.
