Educating Yourself Without Spending A Penny

Educating yourself is one of the best things you can do if you want to improve your life. By educating yourself, you could make sure you get that promotion at work, start your own business, and do a number of other things. At the very least, it’ll make you a wiser, happier person! But usually, educating yourself means spending a fortune on higher education. Not anymore! Now, there are so many resources you can use to learn without spending a penny. Read on to find out how!

Use Online Courses

Online courses are your friend when you want to educate yourself. Some of them can cost a bit of money, but this will be nothing compared to what you’d spend on a course at a college or university. Some of the courses online you can find for free. There are many different sites you can find these courses on, but two of the most popular are Udemy and Skillshare. With Udemy you can find free courses and buy courses one at a time, depending on what you want to do. On Skillshare you sign up and pay monthly, where you can then access every course on the site. It’s up to you how you want to do it! With many courses you get support and people who are also doing the course, so you can share ideas and things.

Make YouTube Your Best Friend

YouTube is another fantastic resource. Whether you want to figure out how to make something from scratch or build a business from the ground up, YouTube has some inspirational content that could help. Why not listen to a video while you get ready in the morning, or watch something while you’re on a treadmill at the gym?

picture

Read As Much As Possible

Make sure you read as much as possible to educate yourself, from self-help books to interesting current events articles that will keep you up to date with the world. If you struggle to read or you don’t always have time, downloading podcasts and audiobooks to listen to can be just as beneficial. You can listen to these before bed, in the car on the way to work, or while you’re running/walking. If you utilize this time to listen to a podcast or audiobook, you’ll improve faster than you realize!

Do Things To Support Your Learning

Make sure you do things to support your learning, and you’ll retain this information and improve at a much faster rate. There are lots of studies out there that can clue you in, but a few of the things you should be doing are as follows:

  • Sleep – getting at least 7 hours a night will make you more creative and productive the next day! Get into a good routine.
  • Mediation – learn how to observe your thoughts rather than entertain every one of them and you’ll be less stressed, as well as able to learn new things much faster. You might just find yourself brimming with new ideas too!
  • Eating – eating nourishing foods will strengthen your body and brain. When you eat junk, you’ll feel like junk. This will make you reluctant to sit and do what you have to do to learn!
  • Exercise – exercise will give you confidence and make you feel happier in everyday life. You can double up your exercise with podcasts and audiobooks, or you can just sit down to study after a sweaty session. You’ll likely feel more focused!

When Tech Attacks! Is Your Home at Risk?

Wikimedia

The technological revolutions many of us are seeing in our home lives, or have seen over the past decade, have brought about a lot of benefits. But there are also a number of disadvantages. Your home safety may actually be at more risk than you think when you have a home with a lot of tech in it. We’re going to take a look at the most prominent risks in home tech and what precisely you can do about it.

Overpowering

The average home has more electricity running through it than ever. With strong technology cheaper and more accessible ever, many of our homes have several computers, at least one television, some games consoles, several smartphones… if you have all of these plugged in frequently, then you risk overloading your system. Of course, most homes have very sturdy electrical infrastructures. But you need to think of individual outlets, as well as the extension methods you’re using. Most people use very cheap multi-outlet solutions, as opposed to paying about $10 or so for a surge-protected one. If you’ve got a lot of electrics in your home, invest in good outlet solutions – or you risk overloading and causing fires.

Wires everywhere

Even in our supposedly wireless age, we’re still, well, using an awful lot of wires. These present a problem because they pose a fire risk if they get worn out or if you have way too many bundled together in the same location (which is something a lot of people do in modern homes), but also because they’re a tripping hazard. Where you can, you should look into wireless solutions for things. Even something as simple as finding the best wireless keyboard and mouse can help reduce the wire count to an important degree. Other peripheral items such as speakers are also becoming wireless, and even some PC monitors.

Data breaches

You may have heard of ‘smart homes’. Not all of us have what some would call smart homes, but many of us certainly have items that are making our properties lean in that direction. The Internet of Things gives us more use for data than ever – but it also provides a lot of entry points for cybercriminals. If they can access your WiFi – and this is much easier than you may think – then they may be able to access personal information such as payment details or even medical information, should you have those on your computers. Make sure your home is properly protected against external cyber threats.

Heavy objects

A lot of us have pretty big televisions now. It used to be that only very rich people have televisions that were sized beyond the 28-inch mark, but these days more people have televisions in the 40-inch region – precisely because they’ve become more affordable than ever. It’s worth remembering, of course, that these present safety risks because they’re so darn big. If you have small children or pets on your property, then you really need to give this some very careful though. Making sure such items are properly affixed to their surfaces, and that those surfaces are themselves properly affixed to the wall or floor, is an absolute must.

Love Thy Neighbor?

https://pixabay.com/en/washington-dc-c-city-cities-urban-1607766/

Do you get on with your neighbor?

Studies show that way may not all feel neighborly love towards the people who live in the house next door. In fact, some studies suggest that around a quarter of us have had stern words with our next-door neighbors. There are various reasons why this may be the case, but most of the time, it all boils down to one of these common disputes.

Repairs And Maintenance

If one homeowner neglects their property and it becomes a mess, it can easily anger their neighbors as it will be an eyesore. This can also be dangerous if the homeowner isn’t seeing to important maintenance that is affecting other homes. For instance, some homeowners fail to call plumbing services about leaks, and the water can start permeating the terraced building’s walls into the neighbor’s home. Another example is when property owners don’t take care of their roof, and tiles end up falling onto a neighbor’s home. In these cases, you should speak to your neighbor and ask them to see to the repairs. If this doesn’t work, call your local council and report the property as dangerous. The homeowner could then be forced to act on the repairs or else be fined.

Noise

Another very common neighborly dispute is about noise. This is especially the case with neighbors who have teenagers and children who often play music loudly or turn the TV right up. It’s also often a problem in modern homes, as the property walls won’t be extremely thick. Most people speak to their neighbor if noise is a problem, and this often solves the issue. But what are you meant to do if your neighbor throws a very raucous party one night? If speaking to them doesn’t make things better, you are perfectly within your rights to call the police to break up the party.

Boundaries

Neighbors can easily fall out about property boundaries as well. This normally begins when one homeowner has a misconception about where the land around their home begins and ends. These kinds of arguments often start when a homeowner erects a fence around their house but puts it on someone else’s land. If this is a genuine mistake, then explaining to them should prevent the argument from developing. However, if a neighbor refuses to acknowledge the official boundaries, you might have to speak to a lawyer to help you end the dispute.

Pets

Unfortunately, arguments about pets often occur because the animal is badly behaved. This can be difficult to deal with as the neighbor isn’t directly causing the problem. However, the owner should always work to ensure that the animal is trained and not aggressive towards you. If you feel threatened by their pet, speak to them about your worries. A reasonable person should go to lengths to ensure their pet is much better trained and friendlier with other humans.
Disputes with your neighbor shouldn’t last forever; hopefully, these tips can help you solve yours for good.

Maintenance Problems in Your House That Should Never Be Ignored

We’re all busy people. We work hard and spend most of our time away from home, we have to look after our children and care for their well-being, and we also need to reserve a bit of time for ourselves. With so much to do and so little time, it can be overwhelming trying to prioritize certain tasks. Sadly, there isn’t much we can do unless we invent a time machine to slow down the world around us.

But because we’re all so busy, it’s easy to miss out on some important things in life that can really make a difference to our quality of life. Home maintenance is just one example of something that we all know about but rarely take into consideration. So let’s slow down for a moment and investigate these home maintenance issues and why you should never, under any circumstances, avoid them.

Repair Your Seasonal Appliances

You never want to be caught in the winter without a working boiler and you don’t want to be caught in the summer without proper air conditioning. Freezing to death isn’t very fun and neither is dehydrating yourself. Ensure that you get all of these appliances fixed before the season comes around so that you don’t put your well-being at risk.

Pest Control

Pests are living creatures that breed and invade your home, making them very difficult to deal with especially during certain seasons. For instance, when it’s old, critters are prone to invading your home because it’s nice and warm and your house radiates enough heat for them to stay comfortable. If you don’t do a spring clean and declutter your house, then pests and rodents can invade and nest in your house. Places like the garage are perfect for things such as mice, and they can cause a lot of damage to your home in addition to your sanity if not taken seriously.

Source

Leaky Pipes

A leaky pipe is typically caused by a loose-fitting or a crack. These problems can amplify and spiral out of control if not properly maintained, resulting in permanent damage to your plumbing system or house. Unless you want to be mopping up the floors on a regular basis or promoting the growth of mould around your house, get in contact with plumbers in your local area and deal with these plumbing issues as soon as possible so that your home is safe from danger.

Smoke Alarms
What’s the only thing that will prevent you getting a serious injury when a fire starts? That’s right, a smoke alarm. If you thought that the constant beeping from your smoke alarm was annoying, then you’d be absolutely right because it’s designed to annoy you so that you’ll replace it. Don’t ignore the beeping and don’t ignore the fact your smoke alarms need power to run. In addition to just a smoke alarm, don’t neglect the importance of your carbon monoxide detector either. Ideally, you want to replace the batteries once a year, so take a note and put it in your schedule.

You Don’t Realize How Much You Have Til You Move!

Last November, I moved to a new place and made one big discovery in doing so, one that I think we all make when we move. It’s how much we have. And much of it is stuff we no longer need and maybe never did!

As you can see in the photo, I still have a few things to get rid of. I got rid of a great many things, some by selling them, and others I simply donated as they would have been too much trouble to sell and wouldn’t command a big enough price to go through the trouble of selling them.

It’s amazing, how we think we don’t have much, yet are often slowly accumulating more and more stuff. And I’m not really inclined to impulse purchasing as much as most people are.

Nor am I a pack rat by any means. I’ve known people who were pack rats and when I see their places, I shudder at the idea of what a move for them would be like, and it has helped me to avoid being one.

People who had visited me had often remarked at how open and uncluttered my place looked. But nevertheless, I’d still managed to accumulate lots of things I didn’t need which only added to the burden of moving.

Hopefully, this has taught me a lesson about keeping my own tendencies to accumulate things under better control. Now, part of the problem, and maybe it was a blessing in disguise, is that my new place, which I like better than my old one, does have one flaw. It has less storage space than my old place did, so it helped to force me to be more discriminating as to what to keep and what to give up. It also helped me do better at deciding if I really need something or if I just want it.

I also learned that I don’t need to save so much stuff and keep every book I read, every pamphlet that only looks mildly interesting, or every tool or electrical gizmo I’ve had even though it was replaced with a newer, better one.

And I don’t need to print everything, I can just bookmark it. Now that I have a smart phone, I can even access the info when I’m away from home.

Oh, I still have those impulsive thoughts jump into my head from time to time, where I think I need something or other, but I’ve learned to evaluate the thought more thoroughly now, and I do hope the lesson sticks this time.

The Proper Way To Spring Clean Your Home

(pixabay: http://bit.ly/2mW2Z0S)

Spring has sprung which gives us the perfect excuse to clean our homes thoroughly for the first time in months. If you’re planning to do a bit of spring cleaning soon, you need to check out these tips to help you do it properly:

Completely Declutter Every Room

Spring cleaning is the perfect excuse to have a good old fashion declutter of your home. You’ll be amazed at how much junk is simply lying around with absolutely no use at all. In fact, a lot of people still have boxes and packaging from Christmas! The reason most of us spring clean is pretty much because we realized how messy and cluttered our houses became through winter. Normally, this is because the temperature dropped, and we all got a bit lazy and wanted to stay in the warmth of our home and not go out and do chores such as taking rubbish away. Well, now’s your chance to right all those wrongs and throw away all your junk. Get your kids to go through their rooms and chuck out things they don’t need. Then, you can go through the other rooms and do the same. By the end, you’ll have no clutter in your house, and it will already look a lot cleaner.

Clean The Outside

When most people think about spring cleaning, they tend to concentrate on tidying the inside of their home. This makes sense, as most homes get really messy, particularly after a long winter where most of your family stay inside longer than usual. However, think about the outside of your home too. After all, this is the part of your home that everyone else is going to see, so it needs to look nice. The winter months can batter your house and make it look really dirty and in bad condition. But, there are some easy things you can do to clean it up. Firstly, get a power hose out and clean away any dirt. Then, get yourself a paint sprayer and give your house a new lick of paint. Now, it will be gleaming on the outside and look brand new once more.

Tidy The Garden

Keeping the focus on the outside of your home, you should also tidy your garden. Gardens are usually left untouched throughout the winter as the weather conditions make it quite difficult to do anything. But, this doesn’t stop weeds from growing and gardens from looking unkempt. So, head out and cut your lawn, banish any weeds, and just generally make your garden look good again. Focus a lot of your attention on your front garden too. Again, this is purely because it’s part of your home that most people are looking at. So, if you only have time to tidy one of your gardens this weekend, prioritize the front one! You can deal with the back one at a later date.

Follow this advice and spring cleaning will be a breeze this year. Before you know it, all the winter cobwebs will be wiped away, and your house will be gleaming once more.

What Will Potential Buyers Be Looking for When They View Your House?

Selling your home is always a big task. You want to get as much money as possible for it, but you also don’t want the process to drag on for too long. When that happens, you just get frustrated with it all, and that’s when selling mistakes get made, and things get rushed. Those are not things that you want to let happen. So, it makes sense to start thinking about what potential buyers will be looking for when they view your home.

When you know exactly which things buyers see as most important, you can start to address these issues and make your home fit for viewing. It’ll take time, and it might cost a little money, but it’ll be worthwhile. Your home will sell much quicker, and you might even get a higher price for it if you manage to get all of these things right. Read on to learn what potential buyers will be looking for when they arrive at your property to view it.

Strong Exterior Appearances

The first thing people see when they arrive at your home is how it looks from the outside. That’s why the exteriors need to look good. Many people think that first impressions matter more than anything else when it comes to viewing and potentially buying a home. People make their mind up before they have even walked through the front door. So, even if your viewers don’t quite realise it, the appearance of the home’s exterior really will have a big impact on whether or not they decide to buy the property. Fix up any minor problems and give the home a fresh coat of paint if necessary. It could make all the difference.

Outdoor Space That Meets Their Needs

Everyone wants some kind of outdoor space when they buy a property. If the home comes with a large garden that allows them to do everything they want to, the home will instantly become more appealing. In some cases, a great garden or outdoor space can make up for other areas in which the home is lacking. Of course, you can’t make your garden any bigger than it is. But you can change how the space is used. Think about what kind of person is going to be buying the home. If you are selling a small home, then a small garden is fine. Aim to make it manageable and easy to care for. But if you’re aiming to sell to families, emphasise a lawn for the kids to play on.

Strong Bathroom and Kitchen Fixtures

There are two rooms in any home that are more important than all the rest. They are the bathroom and the kitchen. The kitchen is the hub of the home. It’s the space in which people can get together at the start of the day and the end of the day. Eating as a family is a communal experience, so people want a kitchen with a good layout and strong features. A great bathroom suite that the buyer won’t have to rip out and replace is always seen as a massive plus point as well. So, pay attention to these two rooms before trying to sell the home.

Plenty of Light

Light matters in the home. No one wants to live in a home that is too dark and unpleasant to spend time in. So, make sure that you emphasise and increase the amount of natural light that enters your home’s rooms. People really do care about this issue a lot, and you can’t afford to ignore it if you want to sell your home and sell it quickly. You might always want to repaint the rooms if the colour scheme is a little too dark and unpleasant because that can immediately turn buyers off.

A Solid Structure

Your home is never going to sell if there are any lingering structural issues that haven’t yet been addressed by you. Even if you see the problem or problems as being relatively minor, it won’t be seen that way by the people who are thinking of buying the home. Why would they want to take a chance on a home that has problems that could become bigger and more serious in the future? After all, the structure of the home is the most important thing of all. If it’s wrong, the whole place could become unlivable in the future.

A Good-Quality Roof

The roof is another one of those things that is fundamental and essential. Without a proper roof over their heads, how are the buyers going to be convinced that this is the home for them? If your roof has cracked tiles, leaks or any other problems, they should be addressed. You can’t hide these things because they will be found when a survey is carried out. If there are bigger changing your roof will be necessary. This might sound like a big job, but it can be done affordably.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness might not seem like a big deal to you when you’re selling your home because dirt and mess can always be removed. But to sell the home, you need to provide a good impression of it. If you present the home to people at its worst, people are not going to view it in a positive light. You shouldn’t make it harder for them to see the great home that’s hiding beneath the clutter and the mess. Always tidy up and make your home as clean and tidy as it possibly can be before showing people around it.

The Ability to Imagine Their Future Lives in the Home
At the end of the day, everyone wants to be able to imagine themselves living in the home they’re about to buy. This is what your viewers will be doing when they look around. They will be asking themselves whether they can see themselves living here in the future. If the answer is that they can’t, then the home is not going to sell particularly quickly. Strip back the home, take away things that are distracting or overbearing, and let people envision their future lives there.

How To Create The Ultimate Minimalist Home

More of us than ever are paring back and trying to streamline our homes. A minimalist style of interior design has become popular for those looking to organize and edit their homes. When done well this style of decorating and design can create a less stressful, more appealing, and cleaner home. If you want to create the ultimate minimalist home take a look at our tips and tricks below…

Kitchen

https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2165/2206462959_34c68fba55.jpg

Kitchens can be notorious for clutter. How many of us have fight for space on our kitchen countertops? Between the microwave, kettle, and utensil pots there’s little room for much else. All of this goes against the basics of a minimalist interior. Clean, sharp, and minimal are the cornerstones of this look.

You’d be forgiven for thinking that white kitchens are the way forward for a minimalist look. Minimal doesn’t have to mean boring or predictable, though, so mix it up and surprise with your kitchen design. Black kitchens are fast becoming a trend for those looking to create a minimal look. It’s equally as clean and slick as all white units, but it has some added drama and atmosphere. Pair your black units and worktops with some brass lights fittings and copper tones. If you’re not keen on having a completely black countertop, go for dark stone instead.

Living Room

https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3792/9004730547_174bdd2bec_b.jpg

Getting a minimalist style right in the living room really depends on your choice of furniture. Often we can go overboard with our seating in this room. Huge sofas and armchairs jostle for attention amongst paintings, coffee tables, maybe even bookshelves. All of this needs to be paired back to nail this scheme.

Consider what are essential pieces of furniture and which aren’t. You probably only need one sofa with another chair. If you do want a coffee table too, consider what you’ll put on it. A stack of monochrome magazines or books on one end and some pale flowers in a glass vase at the other will work well. Avoid cluttering your coffee table with anything else. In terms of the furniture itself, white works well. You’ll need an upholstery cleaner to keep everything look crisp and fresh for this look, and white can be a difficult color to upkeep on your own.

A simple paired back design shouldn’t be clinical and boring. You can use blankets, rugs, and even wall art in a minimalist design. Less is more in terms of wall art so hang a single striking painting in the living room with a plain frame. Similarly, potted plants and pale flowers work well too. In terms of rugs stick to soft grays and muted tones, natural fabrics work well too.

Streaming: The Perfect Way to Let off Some Steam

After a long day at work, there’s no better thing to do than curl up on the sofa in front of the TV. But once you’ve plonked yourself down for the night, there’s nothing worse than having to get back up to sort out your viewing consumption for the evening; however, fear not as in this day and age there is solution to this problem: streaming.

No more having to search the television magazine extensively and no more having to find and inject DVD disks — when you stream, you need do nothing at all. Streaming demands next to no physical activity as you simply choose what you will be viewing for the evening in the extensive list of titles on offer, click a few buttons, and you’re off. No more having to scroll through the various channels on offer on your TV to find the perfect show for you because with streaming everything is there at your fingertips. And to partner this: advances in smart home technology have meant that you no longer even need to get up to turn the light switch on or off — you can do so through the use of the Internet; and advances in smartphone technology have meant that the phones themselves can be used as remote controls through the implementation of infrared ports within them, this eradicating the need to change batteries or search the TV remote when it has fallen down the back of the sofa.

As well as this, streaming offers up more of an opportunity to be in control of your viewing consumption than has ever been experienced before. For instance, you no longer have for a specific time slot to be able to watch your favourite TV show — if you stream you can choose when to watch it and you can do so with just as much as ease as if you had in fact watched it when it was meant to be broadcast. But that is not the only way in which streaming induces more control of your viewing habits; you can also, in this day and age, stream your favourite flicks straight to your smartphone. MovieBox, for instance, provides a streaming app for iOS devices such as the iPhone or iPad which means that you take your viewing habits with you wherever you like (providing you have a strong Internet connection). The MovieBox app, of which you can download the latest version on their website, allows you to forego the hassles of torrents and downloading which makes it the perfect option for your viewing consumption after a long day at work, especially if you are working away from home.

When you consider all of the good ways in which streaming makes everyday life a bit easier, it’s no wonder that the death of the video store is now upon us. Streaming services really are a simple tech that can improve your life greatly, so if you haven’t introduced them to your home, it’s maybe now time that you did. It offers the most stress free way of doing absolutely nothing after work, and what can beat that?

Personalize Your Home In 3 Easy Steps

When you move into a new property, it can be a very exciting time. After all, you now have a humble abode which you can personalize to make perfect for you. However, it’s harder than it looks to turn it into a home rather than a house. And to give it those personal touches which will ensure the previous homeowner’s style vanishes. Therefore, here are three easy steps to follow to personalize your home.

Add some photos to give it character

The first way you can make your house feel like home is by adding some pictures. After all, it leaves no question of who owns the house if the property is decorated with photos of your family and friends. And it can instantly feel more personal to you if you add pictures to those bare walls. Therefore, get some new frames for the wall colors and fill them with lovely pictures. Spread them out sparingly, so that you don’t overcrowd your wall. And remember if you have any favorite pieces of art, you can add these to your home too. After all, you will feel more at home with these pieces on your walls. And it will ensure people know that you live at the premises!

Give it some DIY charm

It’s also a good idea to personalize the home with some DIY features. After all, if everything looks professional, it can often make the home feel like it’s not lived in. And it can feel more like a show home, rather than a property that belongs to you! Therefore, it’s time to put your DIY hat on and give the property an overhaul. It might be that you paint wood furniture, so it’s more your style. For example, you could go for a different color or add a quirky design like flowers or hearts to make it more personal. Or you could even create some letters spelling your name which you can hang in the hallway. And you could even use some form of glue gun which you can get from companies like Glue Guns Direct, and then make something with this. In fact, there are a ton of craft project ideas from felt flowers to sisal coasters that you can make with a glue gun to give your home a touch of DIY charm!

Pexels

Choose colors which you love

It’s likely the new house has been left in a neutral state. After all, people tend to depersonalize their home by painting the walls neutral when it’s time to sell. But rather than sticking to those boring white or cream walls, it’s time to add some of your favorite colors to the home. For example, if you adore red, give your living room a touch of the color of love. Or if you love a calming blue, ensure your sleeping quarters are relaxing by switching to this color. As soon as you go for a paint style which is more personal to you, it will transform the home! And remember the same goes for wallpaper; opt for a design you love rather than what the previous owner had!

And once you have done the inside of the home, you can begin work on making your new garden totally you!
