5 Hybrid All Wheel Drives That Will Give You Great Winter Performance

‘Tis the season to be jolly. It’s also the season of hard starts, coughing, spluttering engines and frozen fuel lines. It’s the time to load your car up with winter tires, check the brakes and make sure the timing belt will survive until spring. The winter brings with it a specific set of maintenance challenges when your trusty steed starts to look a little worse for wear. It’s the time when many of us find ourselves fantasizing about something newer, sturdier and more reliable. Winter is the time when we find ourselves in the market that will protect our families from the inevitable perils of icy roads and erratic drivers. You’ve likely also thought about the environmental and long term cost advantages of a hybrid.

If you’re wondering whether sustainability needs to come at the cost of performance during a season when performance is of paramount importance… don’t worry, it doesn’t! Here we’ve compiled a list of some of the year’s best hybrids from around the world that will give you the robust performance you need to handle anything the winter weather throws in your path.

Hybrids are great for winter

There’s a common misconception that due to their lower ground clearance for increased aerodynamics and their low-roll resistance tires hybrids are inherently inferior to gas engine vehicles around this time of year but that’s not necessarily a given. Gas engines are particularly thirsty when travelling in low gears at low speeds such as when traversing icy roads or travelling uphill. This does not make for great fuel economy. Hybrid vehicles, however engage their electric engines under these conditions making for some excellent fuel savings. With the right set of winter tires and regular checks and inflation (the cold causes air molecules to contract which can make for an apparent sudden drop in tire pressure), there’s no reason why your hybrid can’t match or surpass cars with gas engines when it comes to winter performance.

Without further ado, let’s check out some of the best winter ready AWD vehicles on the market this winter. These vehicles have been selected with performance, fuel economy and safety in mind. It’s a sad fact that the season brings with it not only perilously icy roads but occasional dangerous drivers. Drink driving and driver fatigue are unfortunately prevalent at this time of year. If you’ve been involved in an accident on the road this season it’s important to seek justice with a lawyer like Craig Swapp car accident settlement. It’s even more important, though, to make sure you choose a car that’ll make you feel safe on the road in winter.

Toyota RAV4 Hybrid

It’s that time of year when many of us pile our families into the car and do the rounds to visit friends and family all around the country. This means keeping a very full car on the road for long hours. If this sounds achingly familiar, Toyota’s RAV4 could be for you! It’s interior is among the most spacious in its class with ample room for family and luggage. Even when full, it’s uncommonly quick off the mark offering excellent acceleration as well as a superb fuel economy of 32mpg combined. It handles beautifully and gives you a real sense of safety and security on the road. Starting at $29,970 it offers exceptional value for money.

Volvo XC90-T8 Plug-In Hybrid

Trust the Swedes to make cruising through the snow look this good. While this vehicle may be toward the pricier end of the spectrum (starting in at $72,795) you can see where every penny of that money goes. Beneath its sleek exterior the vehicle boasts 400-horsepower powertrain that enables its rear drive to travel up to 14 miles solely on electric power. The XC90-T8 Plug-In Hybrid stores a WIlly Wonka’s factory of engineering marvels within the same housing as the traditional XC90 models.

Nissan Rogue Hybrid

Remember those old ads, “You can with a Nissan”? This is one of those times when the Japanese manufacturer has actually lived up to their claims. The Rogue Hybrid is built very much with value in mind, offering a fuel economy of 33 mpg in hybrid mode when equipped with All Wheel Drive. For all it’s efficiency, it’s no slouch in the performance department either, with an acceleration of 0-60 in 9 seconds. With a surprisingly low margin of cost between the hybrid and its gas guzzling cousin we know where the smart money goes.

Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid

If it’s exceptional handling and performance on the road you’re looking for you’ll find little offers you a better feeling of power and control on the icy roads than the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid. The German manufacture may not be best known for its commitment to green vehicles but this hybrid surpasses even the highest of expectations. Just take the acceleration at 0-60 mph in an eyebrow scorching 5.4 seconds. It comes with AWD as standard and starts at a reasonable (by Porsche’s standards) $79,750. It offers a fuel efficiency of 22 mpg in hybrid mode and has the kind of luxurious interior you’d expect from the brand.

Lexus NX 300h

There’s a pronounced lean within the market towards the compact SUV and if you’re in the market to scratch this particular itch, you’ll find an excellent fusion of luxury and fuel efficiency in this offering from Lexus. While it stands in at around $5000 in cost over its gas equivalent the NX200t its combined fuel economy of 31 mpg combined with the beautiful interior and superb infotainment system (featuring HD radio, traffic and weather as well as the Bluetooth and USB connectivity that one expects going into 2018) merit the $40,695 price tag.

Acura RLX Sport Hybrid

Of course, if you happen to have around $60,000 burning a hole in your pocket, there’s no hybrid on the market that offers better performance throughout the winter months than the Acura RLX Sport Hybrid. This sedan comes with a surprising array of amenities as standard within its utterly luxurious interior and its responsive performance will make you the undisputed king of the road.

Easy Ways To Enhance Your Interiors

Some people revel in the thought of carrying out an interior makeover, but for others, the prospect of redecorating is much less appealing. If you’re in the second camp, we bring good news! Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune or devote every waking second to DIY to make your home look more attractive. Here are some easy, affordable ways you can enhance your interiors.

Try a new color

If you’re bored of your interiors, changing the colorway, by painting or even using removable wallpaper as a less permanent option, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to breathe new life into your décor. Choosing a new shade will alter the look of the room instantly, and you can transform each space without spending too much time or money on the project. Think about what you use each room for and select tones that complement the style and function of the room. In the bedroom, for example, you want to avoid bright colors that will energize and reinvigorate you and opt for soothing shades that will help you relax. If you’ve got a small space, swapping dark colors for lighter tones will create the illusion of a larger, brighter room. Take a trip to the hardware store, look at some paint charts and get some testers. It’s also a good idea to look online and flick through interior design magazines to get some ideas and inspiration. If you’re doing the painting yourself, remember to clean and sand the wall before you apply primer and your first coat of paint.

Focus on the details

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘the devil is in the detail’, and it’s a really good idea to embrace this concept when you’re decorating or redesigning your home. It’s not always about buying that statement piece of furniture or choosing bold printed wallpaper to bring your living room to life. Using accessories, you can set the tone of the room and introduce quirky, personalized touches that will make your home unique. From toilet brushes and matching toothbrush holders in the bathroom to cushion covers, rugs and lamps in the bedroom, the finishing touches can make all the difference. You’ll find inspiration at Home Spa Select if you’re short on ideas for stylish touches in the bathroom and sites like Pinterest are great for bedroom and kitchen designs. If you’ve got plain walls, you can use your accessories to introduce a new color theme. You can also use these details to add texture, for example, faux fur on a wooden floor, and to combine different styles and trends.

Upcycling

Upcycling is a hugely popular trend at the moment. If you’ve got chests, wardrobes or tables you don’t really like anymore, don’t throw them away. Paint them, strip the wood or alter the shape slightly to produce a new piece that will steal the show. If you’re new to the concept, there are some fantastic guides online.

Are you hoping to spruce up your interiors without spending a fortune or devoting every weekend to decorating for weeks to come? If so, hopefully, this guide has given you a few ideas to get you started.

Dealing With The Ticking Alzheimer’s Bomb

It’s never easy when a loved one receives an Alzheimer’s diagnosis. While the disease doesn’t receive as much recognition as it deserves, few other diagnoses can tear a family apart like this.

But, as with any illness, it’s essential to tackle the issue head-on. The chances are that, by the time a medical confirmation is reached, the condition is relatively severe. It may start with small moments of forgetfulness. But, most don’t receive a conclusive diagnosis until things have gone far past that point.

Hopefully, though, your loved one is still lucid enough to express their wishes. Hence, you can ensure you’re giving them the best care, and deal with things the way they want you to. While it will be a difficult time, the aftermath of the diagnosis is crucial. The chances are that you don’t have a great deal of time until things get worse. So, you should consider the following as soon as you can.

Covering the costs

Sadly, with an illness like this, you need to be practical. So, the first thing you and your loved one should discuss is how you plan to deal with the costs. For the most part, this involves long-term care and even nursing homes down the line. There will inevitably come a stage when it’s no longer feasible for them to live at home. And, by that stage, they won’t be in a position to make sound financial decisions. So, you need to talk about it straight away and learn as much as you can, while you can.

First, ask about medical insurance. If they’re on a specialized plan, find out if it would cover the costs needed. But, if they’re on a standard medicare plan, you may need to look at the supplements like those mentioned by this company here. A standard plan generally only covers some of the doctor’s bills and 100 days of care. Look out for a plan which offers a more long-term solution.

Making difficult decisions

And, of course, that isn’t the only complicated issue. As morbid as it sounds, it’s also worth tackling topics such as power of attorney. This ensures that, when your loved one is no longer able, you, or whoever they choose, can take control of their estate and finances. To ensure that the selected individual sticks to their wishes, encourage them to make a will. Make sure, also, to talk about their desires so that you’re all on the same page.

Spend time together

Technical stuff aside, an Alzheimer’s diagnosis is a time bomb. As it stands, there’s no escaping the explosion. So, it’s also crucial you have fun with the person in question, and make the most of the lucid time they have left. You don’t want to look back at these meetings and wish you had done more. Take them for days out, and encourage them to do things they love. Life is too short, and a diagnosis like this should prove as a stark reminder of that.

The Worst Things To Wake Up To As A Homeowner

With homeownership comes responsibility. This is the stuff of adulthood. If you live alone, the burden falls solely on you. But, even if you share with a partner, or have a family, there are things you need to tackle. In fact, having kids can only increase that sense of responsibility. After all, it’s down to you to keep the roof over their heads.

The most obvious things you’ll need to consider are the bills and mortgage payments. After all, without sorting those each month, you won’t have a home to protect. But, once those essentials are dealt with, there are plenty of other things to think about.

You will, of course, need to ensure the house is in top condition. This includes repairs and maintenance which every homeowner should take time for. Failure to do so could cause issues down the line. You need to think, too, about locking the house for safety. There’s no one behind you now, checking that you remembered to do it. So, most homeowners get into the habit of double checking the doors before they leave.

But, all our efforts to keep our homes safe don’t always work out the way we would like. Some things are out of our control and, as the head of the household, you’ll likely be the one who has to deal with such issues. Often, these things come to the fore during the night, or in the morning when you wake up. These are times, after all, when you can’t keep an eye on everything that’s happening.

Anyone who’s had a home on their shoulders will know the feeling of waking up and finding something’s wrong. It’s a sure way to shake off the sleep, that’s for sure. And, while you can never prepare for such eventualities, you can at least make yourself aware of what you might wake up to. Read on to find out some of the most common issues.

Bumps in the night

This is top of the list because it’s probably the most common nightmare fear for the majority of homeowners. If you live alone, it’s likely you worry about this fairly often. But, even when you have a family around you, this can be a concern. You can ease that in a significant way by installing burglar alarms which connect straight to the police. But, even with these in place, you may have to wait for a response.

It’s important to note that every house has its bumps and creeks. It could be the heating kicking in, or the door frames contracting in the heat. In fact, the majority of the bumps you will hear in the night are likely to have innocent causes. Get to know the sounds of your home so that you’re not jumping up each time something happens. Sometimes, though, that much-dreaded bump does happen. And, when it does, it can be hard to know the best plan of action.

Your first thought may be to investigate, and that makes sense. After all, you don’t want to call the police because a pan fell off the draining board. But, rushing downstairs could put you at risk. Instead, listen further. If there are no more sounds, it probably wasn’t anything serious. If you hear more, try to get closer, but remain a safe distance away. Standing at the top of the stairs, for example, will ensure you can hear an intruder. It’s also worth keeping a phone next to your bed. This is added security and ensures you can call for help if you do hear a much-dreaded break-in.

Fire

Many of us also dread waking up to fire. Yet, whenever you hear about bad house fires on the news, they always tend to happen at night. It’s enough to send shivers down your spine. But, there are safety measures you can take to ensure that no fire gets out of control before you wake. By installing fire alarms, and replacing the batteries often, you’ll be alerted as soon as a fire breaks out. If you aren’t convinced, bear in mind that three out of five home fire deaths happen in houses without adequate alarm systems.

Of course, the alarm doesn’t put the fire out for you. Hence, it’s also worth stocking up on fire blankets and keeping them close to hand near problem areas. Kitchens are an obvious hotspot, but it’s also worth keeping at least one of these in your other rooms.

A knock on the door

Nighttime knocks on the door are rarely a good thing. Anyone who has experienced them will know the heart-pounding fear of being woken in this way. But, before you open the door to anyone at nighttime, it’s essential you know who they are. Speak to them through the letterbox. Ask for identification before you even think about letting them into your home. If you live alone, it may also be worth letting a loved one know you’ve got unexpected company. Strange as it seems, this communication could help you if these people aren’t who they say they are.

Wind damage in the garden

Of course, it isn’t all about the things which wake you up in the night. Waking up in the morning can have its surprises, too. If the weather was extreme during the night, you might come downstairs to some destruction. Fallen fences, trees, and even roof tiles can cause significant stress. This is especially true if any of them have damaged your neighbor’s property. If your fence has fallen on their side, it’s essential you go round straight away and come to an agreement. Otherwise, you open yourself to legal issues. Once that’s sorted, it’s vital you clear the mess as soon as possible. Even finding a temporary way to support your fence is better than leaving it down. After all, leaving it down is a safety risk more than anything.

If your roof is damaged, you should also tackle this issue as soon as you can. Leaving areas exposed could do real damage, and cause problems such as damp in the home. To make sure it doesn’t happen, phone companies like Wildwood Roofing as soon as you can. They’ll be able to make any necessary repairs, and ensure those missing tiles don’t leave your house lacking. Think, too, about clearing fallen trees, or putting them out of the way until you can get to the root of the problem.

A cold house

No one likes to wake up to a cold house. Leaving the warmth of your bed for a cold dash to the bathroom is never a pleasant experience. But, it’s even worse if there’s a problem with your heating. Perhaps you have it set to come on, but it didn’t kick in. Instantly, you think the worst. But, the best thing to do in this situation is to stay calm. There is all manner of reasons why this could happen, including a sudden drop in boiler pressure. Of course, you need to remember that gas is a risky thing to play with. Take a look, and see if there’s an obvious solution to the issue. If not, don’t hesitate to contact a professional who can take a look for you. And, don’t panic; it’s unlikely you need a whole new boiler.

Drips and drops

And, of course; let’s not forget the feeling of waking up to an unfamiliar dripping. As mentioned above, every house has its noises, and you become accustomed to your own. Which is why it can become very obvious reasonably fast when a new sound joins the orchestra. In truth, leaking pipes can become a problem at any time of day. But, we often don’t realize the issue until the silence of the morning. Plus, overnight, a fair amount of water has time to collect. So, as well as dealing with the drip itself, you’ll likely have to cope with the mess it’s made.

The first thing to do is find the source of the dripping. Once you’ve determined the severity, you could turn off the water valve and fix it yourself, or get a professional to do it for you. The good news is, many leaking pipes are easy enough to fix. Do some research online and consider whether this is an option. If you have any doubts, though, get someone who knows what they’re doing. There is a multitude of emergency plumbers out there, and they can ensure you don’t turn a drip into a splurge of water.

In conclusion

As you can see, there are a fair few things which could give you an early morning shock. And, this is by no means an exhaustive list. But, knowing about these possibilities shouldn’t keep you awake at night. Most homeowners never experience such issues. Even if you do, we’re incredibly skilled in coping with emergencies. As mentioned above, you can also prepare by installing alarm systems and emergency procedures. With these in place, you should still be able to sleep like a baby.

Balancing The Work/Life Scales

Most of us know about the importance of work/life balance. But, in the modern age of online business and smartphones, many of us are moving further away from the possibility. Instead, we hook our email accounts to our phones and open them as soon as we receive correspondence. We head online to check business social media and such. Before we know it, work eats into our free time.

And, of course, this works both ways. Some people have taken the work/life balance to the extreme, and their work has suffered because of it. If you let your personal life into the office, it can’t be any surprise when your concentration isn’t as good as you’d like.

If you think you’ve fallen foul to either of these traps, it’s time to rebalance those scales. And, here are a few simple ways to do it.

Separate accounts for everything

In an age where many of us are responsible for our earnings, it’s increasingly tempting to merge accounts. Freelancers or business owners may decide to use their personal email for work. And, the same can be said for phones. Only having one is much more straightforward, after all.

But, these choices can prove catastrophic to that all important balance. After all, you won’t be able to log onto your email of an evening without dealing with business correspondence. And, when you take your phone along for business calls, a few personal ones are sure to slip through.

So, think twice before attaching your business email to your old Hotmail account. Instead, look into the separate business accounts offered by packages like Microsoft 365 Business. And, stock up on a phone just for business. You don’t have to go all out with this, as you’ll only be using it for necessary research and calls.

Don’t take work home

If you’re in the habit of taking work home, stop. You may think it’ll only take a second to update the business Twitter page, but that’s rarely the case. The chances are that you’ll spend hours replying to customer comments. Instead, leave your business laptop at work. Try, too, not to memorize passwords. This way, there’s no chance of logging on at home. As such, you’ll be able to sit back and relax. If you never give yourself this downtime, you could easily damage your health, or burn yourself out. Then, you wouldn’t be able to work at all!

No personal correspondence through the day

And, remember, this works both ways. Don’t log onto your personal email account during the day. Doing so will only take your head out of the game, and leave you behind. And, when we’re behind, we’re more likely to slip into taking work home with us! For the same reasons, you should always avoid taking your personal phone to your desk with you. Leave it in your coat pocket if you want, or leave it at home. If you have your work phone to hand, going without shouldn’t be a problem.

Natural Born Carers: The Ideal Career Path For Those Who Care

If you consider yourself something of an instinctive carer, then you might at some point decide you want to make that your job. The good news there is that there are many ways in which you can do just that, and get paid along the way. The number of caring careers is ever-rocketing, and in many cases the vacancies are too. There has truly never been a better time to get into caring as a career, so take a look at the following and see if you can find a career path that seems to work for you personally.

Pic Credit

Doctor

Perhaps you want to go all-out and become a fully fledged doctor. There are many huge benefits to being a doctor, most of them obvious. For a start, you can be sure of a decent salary from the beginning. However, that will only be after many years of being in training, and that is something that you should feel prepared for if you want to be a doctor. It’s not just the salary, however. Doctors enjoy some of the highest rates of rewarding work, and they tend to be able to get quite a lot out of the job. Of course, you should also be prepared for quite a high level of stress, as well as the likely possibility of working long hours.

You might also want to think about specialising in a particular area. Most doctors will need to do this, so the earlier you work out what you are most interested in the better off you will be, as you will be able to make the most of the education you are receiving. Whatever particular doctor role you might end up in, however, this is a job which is always bound to serve you well. It is a noble profession and something which the society as a whole needs badly. It will also be a fantastic way for you to be able to express your genuine care in your career life.

Pic Credit

Nurse

There are many reasons why someone might choose to become a nurse rather than a doctor. For a start, you might not want to be in school for that long. While nurses do need to receive extensive training and medical education, it is no quite as extensive or long as that of a prospective doctor. It is also, for many people, much more appealing as a job because it appears to be more hands-on, and in many respects nurses do most of the real patient care work in the medical industry. If you consider yourself hard-working, eager and particularly caring, then nursing could be the ideal role for you.

As we have seen, it will take plenty of training to get to the point where you are able to practise as a nurse, but it’s important too to remember that not all training is made equal. Where you get it from is just as important as that you get it at all, so it’s worth looking around at some less conventional forms of nursing qualification as well. Take a look at this article on What Makes Our Lady of the Lake Online RN-BSN Nursing Unique? to see just one example of the kind of qualification you might choose to go for. As well as the necessary training, you should be prepared for extremely long hours and some difficult days ahead. But you’ll also feel hugely rewarded from time to time, and you should feel proud to be doing some hugely important work. Nursing is for many the optimum caring career path.

Pic Credit

Therapist

The truth is that mental health is just as important as physical health. If you genuinely believe that, and you know you are a caring individual, then you might benefit from becoming a therapist rather than a nurse or a doctor. Of course, you might also be a doctor in psychology or psychiatry – but this is not necessary merely to be a therapist.

Something to bear in mind is that there are so many kinds of therapy, and so many routes to take to become a therapist. You will need to spend some time discovering the route and the role that seems best for you, so that you can be sure to end up doing exactly what you want to do. However you do it, being a therapist is a hugely rewarding and hands-on profession, if a little emotionally laboring at times as well. You will need a very particular kind of caring attitude to succeed in this line of work, but if you have it then you can achieve some wonderful things. There are few more exciting things than helping others to genuinely understand themselves better, and so lead happier and more fulfilling lives. Being a therapist can change their lives – and your own – and is definitely worth considering.

Pic Credit

Home Carer

Perhaps you feel you have a particular affinity for the elderly, or for those who for some reason cannot look after themselves very well. A great job for such individuals is that of domiciliary care worker. With this kind of care, you visit people in their own homes once or twice a day and help them to take care of themselves. You might be helping them to wash, relieve themselves in the bathroom, eat, or just go about their daily lives. Those who get involved in this kind of work are often energetic, keen and easy to get along with just about anyone. If you think you have those qualities, or can at least develop them, then this might be the job to go for.

Most of the time, you will be working with an agency, which has the benefit of meaning that you might well be caring for a number of people. This diverse approach to caring can be particularly enjoyable, and it is something that can lead to a very positive way of life for many.

Natural carers can find many job roles to suit them, and doing so will make the most of those skills, while also making the world a little better too.

If You Love to Work With Your Hands, These Are the Jobs For You

Some people simply can’t do the kind of work that keeps you chained to a desk, staring at a computer screen for hours on end, and there’s nothing wrong with that. There so many proud and reputable professions out there that are based entirely on working with your hands, and you should explore these if you’re looking for a career move that will satisfy your needs. Here are just five of the best jobs that will allow you to work with your hands each day.

Baking and Cooking

Baking and cooking jobs are relatively easy to come by if you’re willing to start at the bottom and work your way up the ladder over a period of years. It’s a surprising lucrative career once it starts to take off and you move into higher positions too. And you’ll most definitely be working with your hands every day of the week.

Electrical Maintenance

In order to do this job, you will first need to attain the correct levels of training. Electrical maintenance is not for everyone but if you enjoy learning new things and want to carry out a highly skilled job using your hands, it’s definitely a career path that’s worth considering. It’s also a very well paid job to take up; experienced electricians can earn a lot of money and they’re always in demand. If you’re starting out, you’ll probably begin in electrical maintenance before eventually moving on up.

Construction Labouring

The construction industry is always looking for new labourers to come on board and work hard on all kinds of building projects. As a result, good labourer jobs are pretty easy to come by, and there is plenty of choice out there. At tiring work that can put a strain on the body but if you’re up for that, this could be the career that you’re best suited to.

Carpentry

Carpentry is one of the oldest and most highly regarded professions in human history. It’s thanks to carpenters that we’ve had furniture and all kinds of other items that have motored human progress through the ages. These days, carpenters are as in demand as ever as people look for unique and highly crafted furniture for their homes. Carpenters can also do work on repairing furniture that’s broken or damaged in some way.

Welding

Welding is similar to carpentry, except you just switch wood for metal. It’s all about creating metal items by securely joining together multiple pieces of metal. It’s a precise task and requires a very steady hand for the best outcome. It can be a rewarding job too though, because you see the product of your labour right in front of you as soon as you lift up that welding mask and take a closer look at what you’ve done.

It might take some new training and a new interest, but there is nothing stopping you from switching to one these careers and fulfilling your dream to do a hands-on job each day.

Novel Ways To Make A Good First Impression

Whether it is for a job interview, to meet someone on a date, or anything in between, making a good first impression is hugely important. It is something that a lot of people struggle with, but the truth is that it is relatively easy to do. As long as you are aware of some of the basic things that people might pay attention to when they meet you, you can ensure that their first impression of you is a good one. Form that day onwards, you will then have a much better relationship with that person, whether it is professional or a private one. Let’s look at some of the novel ways you can make a good first impression.

First impressions are hard to get right – Image Source

Arrive In Style

If it is going to be a situation where there is a possibility they will see you arrive, then you will benefit greatly from being sure to arrive in style. However you will be arriving, make sure that you have thought about it beforehand so you can put some real effort into it. If you are driving, you should make sure that you have recently washed your vehicle with a popular car shampoo, and perhaps even waxed it too. You would be amazed at how paying attention to these details can make a huge difference. If you are walking, then it is a good idea to make sure you are doing so with confidence – which takes us to the next point.

Show Confidence

The most important thing of all is that you display a good deal of confidence as you enter the situation. As long as you do that, you will find that you immediately make a good impression. If you are someone who routinely struggles with feeling confident, then you might want to look into some of the things you can do to improve that. As it happens, it’s relatively straightforward, even if it is also something of a learning curve. The simple acts of standing up straight and looking people in the eye will make a huge difference. Elsewhere in your life, the more that you actively approach and tackle your fears head-on, the more likely it is that you will feel confident going into new situations, so that is worth remembering too.

Be Friendly & Personable

No matter the situation or what you need to get from it, being friendly and approachable is going to be a huge step forward in giving a great first impression. Use their name (to show you are really listening) and ask them questions about themselves. Show real interest, and you will find that people relax around you and enjoy your company all the more. The friendlier you are, the more people will want to spend time with you. If at first you find it difficult to maintain the energy for this kind of approach, try to take it in small steps. This will eventually lead you to being a much more confident interpersonal talker.

Myths About Sleep: Debunked!

Do you ever think about what happens when you go to sleep? Do you ever think about the rumours posted about facts surrounding sleep and ponder whether or not they are true. Well, prepare to be amazed. There are so many false assumptions about sleep and what happens when you sleep or what can impact your sleeping pattern that we’re here to set the record straight. Let’s start by thinking about dreams.

When You’re Asleep, Your Brain Achieves Its Maximum Potential

False! This idea has been around for quite some time, but it was recently made popular again by Christopher Nolan’s Inception. Yes, lucid dreaming is a fascinating topic, and yes it is possible to fail to realise you’re asleep because a dream can be so realistic. But it has nothing to do with utilising your full brain power. In fact, we are always using our full brain power just not all at once, and we don’t use it all at once while we’re asleep either. The simplest way to think about this is that your brain is divided into sections. When you complete an activity, part of the brain related to that activity will light up on the MRI. You don’t need all of it though. For instance, you don’t need the part of your brain that handles your inhibition when you’re lying down in bed.

Electromagnetic Energy Is Keeping Me Up

Pic Source Link

It’s unlikely, to say the least. Let’s say that you are struggling to sleep in your bedroom. You might go online, and one of the first articles you stumble across may suggest that energy from EMF, electromagnetic frequencies can disrupt your sleep by screwing with your brain waves. In fact, it was recently shown in an exaggerated form on a popular TV show Better Call Saul. Now, the theory behind this suggests that the tiny amounts of radioactive energy that every single tech device produces impacts your brain. However, there is very little evidence to support this. Even standing on an electricity pylon probably won’t impact you that greatly because it’s far enough away from you. So, the chances of the TV in your room, designed to be consumer friendly causing an issue are slim to none. Interestingly if you do stumble on sites claiming this type of fear as fact, they are usually connected to a company selling EMF safety software and equipment on sites like SafeSpaceProtection.com. Fascinating huh?

Sleeping On A Firm Mattress Is Good For You?

Pic Link Location

Have you ever heard this one? You might have complained to your mum and dad about your mattress and mentioned that you have decided to buy a new one. Why bother! – They exclaim loudly. Sleeping on a firm mattress is good for your back, don’t you know. But actually, the science doesn’t back up their claim. In fact, sleeping on a firm mattress can actually be worse for you. It pushes your body into an unnatural position and as such may impact blood flow. It could also cause increased tension in the lower back muscles. According to sites like ChooseMattress.com, different mattresses suit different people. But that doesn’t mean you should continue to sleep on a firm mattress if it is causing you discomfort. Instead, it’s probably time to pick out a new one.

OBE Is Totally Real

It could be, we can’t guarantee this one isn’t true however we also can’t say empirically that it is. What we can tell you is that an OBE or outer body experience is classified as paranormal activity. There is a research grant in America that will give anyone a million dollars if they can prove empirically a paranormal activity. This grant has never been claimed. Now, it’s possible that technology simply isn’t there yet to show someone experiencing an OBE. Or, it’s quite possible that they are just a trick of the imagination. We simply don’t know, and for now, we’re happy to label this one as debunked.

You Can Function Fine On Two Minutes Of Sleep

Pic Source

The length of time varies. Some people say they can function on a couple of minutes of sleep. Others suggest that they can handle life in just a couple of hours, but scientifically they’re wrong. Experts suggest that you do indeed need at least eight hours to function effectively. While you can function on less, you will not be reaching your maximum potential and will be more prone to making serious mistakes. So, you might have seen hospital shows where the characters claim to be working on five minutes of sleep. If this were actually the case, those doctors would probably be killing more people than they saved.

Sage Advice for Growing Old ‘Gracefully’

Growing old is often no easy thing and there are so many people telling how to do it, and how to do it right. In reality, there is no right way to grow old, and different things work for different people. Here are some tips, and things to try, not to grow old gracefully, but making the most of it. With pensions and retirement comes more free time, so you are able to try and do things that you might not have been able to ten or twenty years ago. So make the most of it!

Getting Fit

Staying fit can be difficult to do when you have a full-time job, but being retired means you have time to keep fit and keep active. This is some advice that is always given to you as you grow older, but it is something that everyone should try and do at every age. Using your body will keep it in tip-top condition for years to come, so you are able to do what you what, when you want, well into the future, and who doesn’t want to look good?

Trying New Things

Many people might be old and have lots of habits and ideas that they won’t grow out, but why not challenge yourself to trying something new? Why not try swimming if you haven’t before, or get some adrenaline rushing with a poker game? Perhaps you can try that photography class that you wanted to try when you were younger, or you could become a life drawing model? There are lots of things to get involved with now you have the time, and hopefully some more resources than you did, than when you have a young family to raise. Now you can spend money on yourself, your own interests, and do as you please, without answering anyone.

Covering Your Bases

Now, so much strange advice and propaganda is marketed toward the older generation, and while you don’t have to start planning your own funeral  just yet, it’s good to be smart about these choices. Looking after yourself, and even your partner, can require some difficult decisions and swallowing your pride at times. If you think you might need a medical alert system, like Alert-1 for example, or you  just want to be on the safe side, invest in one. If a mobility scooter or walking stick might be of use to you, get one! There are so many things to make your life easier and safer to live, so if something might be of use to you, there’s no harm in trying it out.

Spending Time With the Family

This is an obvious one, but if you have more time on your hands, this is great time to spend with your family. Appreciating your loved ones is one of the best pastimes out there.

Growing old gracefully can be done in lots of different ways. It’s a time to grow, challenge yourself, and try new things. All the best for the adventures you’re yet to have!
