Keeping Your Business Cultured

Having a well-cultured workplace doesn’t mean that you have a vastly diverse pool of staff. It means that you and your staff are well-connected and understand each other. Your staff is happy, and they respect your authority.

Building up a relationship like this with your staff can be hard. So, it’s best if you begin building these bridges from the moment you meet them. This post will go through some of the ways that you can build your company into a cultured business.

  • Assessments

Your staff will struggle to understand how well they are doing, without being assessed. Assessments should be done on a regular basis and should be aimed at developing your staff’s skillsets and work ethic. This will allow you to let your employees know when they are falling short. But, it will also give you an excellent opportunity to tell them where they’re doing well. Without their weak spots being the focus, you can make even a negative assessment leave the employee feeling confident. This is one of the key steps in building a culturized company.

  • Rewards

When your staff perform well or go out of their way to help, they should be treated as such. It’s best to give rewards out in groups so that people don’t feel unappreciated. Taking your employees out for a meal or a few drinks is a great way to say thank you. Rewarding your staff like this will make them feel as though you really care about them. This will build rapport and give you an excellent chance to get to know your staff, outside of work.

  • Disciplinary Action

Unlike rewards, disciplinary action should be taken against individuals only. It will hurt moral if you punish a whole group for one person’s mistake. Instead, take people aside in private, and deal with them in a personal manner.

When it comes to the severity of your discipline, you have to be reasonable. If you go over the top over something small, it will scare your other staff members. But, if you are too relaxed about something larger, your staff will start to walk all over you. It’s important to put policies in place to account for this so that you know how to act in any given situation.

  • What Will You Gain?

By taking steps like these, you’ll gain the trust and respect of your employees. The benefits of this can be astonishing. Your staff will work harder, and they will listen to you more. It will make it easier to roll out changes to your company, and even give your employees bad news. Ultimately, you and your staff will all be happier.

Hopefully, this will inspire you to start working on your company’s culture. These methods will make your company look better from the outside, and they could even boost your revenue. Do some research yourself, and decide what you want to do for your company. Every business is different, after all. And your staff will need different treatment.

Identity Theft: Prevention Techniques For Businesses

It seems like the world of business is constantly being attacked with identity theft issues. How often do we see the story of a company-wide hack in the news? How often are we told to change our passwords because gigantic companies have put our data in disarray? Unfortunately, security is becoming even harder to guarantee in today’s digital world. Identity theft can cause a business to shut down for good, so you need to do everything in your power to prevent it.

Let’s take a look at a few prevention techniques.

Ultra-Secure Passwords

For years, we’ve been told over and over about the need for secure passwords. Some of us take it seriously, while others brush it off as needless worry. Those who fall into the former category are doing the right thing. Hackers will try to break your passwords, and they’ll have an easy time if it’s a simple one. Plenty of tools are their disposal in the process, so breaking a short and simple code can be done in minutes. Always protect your passwords thoroughly.

Document Protection

As a business, you’re often required to store confidential data about your customers. Unfortunately, every bit of data you collect puts your business at greater risk. If you were to lose those documents, important data could get into the wrong hands. In addition to protecting it thoroughly, you need to think about how you store that data. Once it’s no longer valid, equipment like Intimus shredders can help to destroy it for good.

Put Policies In Place

The reason why many instances of identity theft are caused by the policies of a business. We’ve heard of documents being left on trains and insiders leaking information in famous instances. Ultimately, with efficient business policies, this sort of thing shouldn’t happen. So, make sure your employees understand the rules surrounding data protection. Only provide access to those who are both trustworthy and need access for their roles.

Use Encryption

There are some business owners out there who believe that encryption is an unnecessary concern. Again, that’s a myth that should be resigned to the past. Digital safety is getting harder and harder to achieve all the time, so we need to go the extra mile. Encrypting our passwords and business transactions can prevent a catastrophic incident. Even if the criminal still gets access to the data, it’ll hopefully prevent them from using it.

Keep Your IT Systems Up To Date

It’s an obvious point, but keeping your IT systems up to date is a must-mention topic. Not only should you be thinking about antivirus and firewalls, but OS updates as well. Your internal IT use policy should be in place to protect the business from criminal activity online. If you’re unsure about how to go about this, bring in the experts from outside the company. Get them to do an audit of your systems, and they’ll quickly identify any issues to be concerned about.

We’re about to hit 2017, and there has never been a more important time to think about identity theft. It’s becoming more prominent, so we need to protect our businesses as best we can.

Safety First! Security Measures You Need To Take If You Want Your Business To Succeed

If you run or own your own business, you will know how much you value it in your life. For many people, they put so much time and effort into building up a business from scratch that they nurture it and care for it as if it was their child. This might sound extreme, but how many times have you heard a businessperson refer to their work as their ‘baby’?! If you are someone who has built your own company from the ground up, it’s only natural that you would want to protect it. Security is one of the most important things you can invest in as a business owner. Thieves and hackers are more skilled than ever these days and the last thing you want is to be outsmarted by one of them at the expense of your business. Take a look at the following hints on how you can keep your business safe and secure, for the good of everyone.

Keep the premises safe

If you’re just starting out, you may run your business from the comfort of your own home. Or, if you are climbing the career ladder, you may have moved to an external office where you have started to house some employees. Either way, the physical protection of the property is paramount to your business’s success, and your own safety. Look into security systems such as alarms and CCTV to see what would be best for you. If you work from home, read alarm reviews home security experts to give you something that works for both your business and your personal life.

Keep equipment safe

In an ideal world, trespassers wouldn’t even get past the front gate, let alone in your front door and up to the office. But if your business involves expensive equipment such as Apple Macs, it is vital that you do all you can to keep them safe. Always lock internal doors as well as external ones when you leave the business premises and if you can, get heavy-duty doors installed that will be difficult to break into. In terms of money, you absolutely need a safe. It’s simply not practical to take the company money with you everywhere you go, nor to have it all stored on just one bank card. But you can keep any cash, even if it’s just petty cash, secure in a safe to protect from thieves.

Consider online safety

Many people who try to infiltrate businesses these days don’t even need to leave their homes. Website and portal hacking is the easiest way for experienced thieves to access important company information and thus steal from local businesses. Don’t just build your company portal via a website where anyone can log onto it. Invest in a firewall, along with anti-phishing software to prevent hackers from accessing the inner workings of your business. It is also your duty as an employer to ensure that your employee’s personal details are kept safe. So, using the intranet means they can rest assured that their data isn’t accessible to the outside world.

Are You Crying Out For A Fresh Start?

Are you stuck in a rut? Are you bored with doing the same things with the same people all the time? Or are you anxious that time is flying and you’re not getting making headway with your list of life goals? Sometimes, we all have days when we wonder if we could be doing more. Life is for living, after all. If this sounds familiar, it may be time for a fresh start. Here are some ways you can boost your mood and get motivated in the months ahead.

Is work getting you down?

Most of us have days when we’d much rather stay in bed than trek to the office or serve customers all day. Work isn’t supposed to be fun all the time. But you should take a degree of enjoyment out of it. If you’re bored of work, or it’s making your stressed, consider a change of environment or a new career. What do you want to do? If somebody asked you what your dream is, what would you say? If you have goals, try to make them happen. It might take a long time, but you can start taking baby steps. Perhaps you want to get into presenting, for example. If so, fire off some cover letters and CVs and find out about work experience opportunities. Look into internships or go back to college and take relevant courses.

Do you suffer from body confidence issues?

Body image is one of the most pressing concerns for young people today. If you suffer from body confidence issues, there may be ways you can increase your self-esteem. Firstly, think about why you lack confidence. Are you heavier than you’d like to be or do you struggle to put on weight? Changes to your diet and lifestyle can often have amazing benefits for your health and your self-confidence. If you want to lose weight, try to change what and how much you eat, and take up exercise. If you struggle with a sweet tooth, try using products like miracle berry. You can add tablets to your food to make it sweeter without increasing its calorie content. If you want to put on weight, ask your GP for advice. It may be as simple as eating more or including more calorific foods in your diet.

Are you craving a change of scenery?

Are you constantly looking at pictures of amazing places on Instagram and Facebook? If so, why not stop looking, and start doing. The world is your oyster, and there are so many places out there to explore and discover. Travelling can broaden your horizons and open new doors. If you dream of jetting off on an adventure, start saving up, and plan your trip. Seeing the world can give you a new lease of life and help you decide what you want to do in the future.

Sometimes, life can become stagnant. You reach a standstill, and it’s hard to get out of a rut. If you find yourself in this situation, it may be time to make changes. Think about getting a new job, or working on your self-confidence. Spread your wings and see the world. A fresh start may be just what you need.

A Virtual Reality: Hiring A “Virtual” Assistant For Your Home Business

pexels-photo-106344-large

It is difficult if you’re running a business from the comfort of your own home. It may sound like an ideal situation, but in many cases, it is not. When you start out in the Big Wide World of business, it can be a testing time for you. Having a small amount of staff, or even if you’re just running it by yourself can cause undue stress and tension. And it’s not necessarily the best starting point for your startup. A popular method getting tasks done efficiently and quickly without straining your business finances too much is to hire a freelance contractor or what is known as a virtual assistant. Essentially a virtual assistant is someone you can delegate duties to via your computer. There are certain advantages to this, but there are also disadvantages.  For both, they are as follows:

The Minor Tasks Are Delegated

Having a virtual assistant to complete the smaller admin duties saves you many hours so you can carry on with the more important and pressing tasks. Instead of you banging your head against the wall trying to remember the Excel shortcuts. As well as the basic tasks, having a virtual assistant gives you the opportunity to assign research tasks. So this can give you an upper hand regarding the competition and the market research. Another benefit to tasks like this is that you can assign them a deadline to complete it by so you don’t have to spend weeks waiting for the outcome.

You Have Many Choices In Who You Want To Hire

A lot more people are switching from permanent employment to freelancing as it is more lucrative. So when it comes to hiring your ideal staff member, using websites like Guru or People Per Hour it is never easier to do.

Ending Contracts Are Easier

When you hire a virtual assistant, it is a lot easier to end a contract in comparison to the standard employer route. In doing this, there is a lot less investment in the working relationship as you are just providing a task for them to do. If they do not do it your standards, then it is less likely they will take it personally when you end the contract. In the virtual assistant arena, even if you had a disgruntled employee, you are able to go through a company that provides virtual office addresses. This makes it more discreet for you if you are operating out of your home.  If you are interested in an alternate Mail address, click here for more information.

Distance Is Easier

Depending on the type of business you’re running, you may want to keep your distance when it comes to hiring freelance contractors. If you are a one man band and you needs a virtual assistant that asks no questions and get on with the tasks, this will be an ideal setup for you. The downside to this is that if you are looking to run a personal and interactive organisation this might not be the best approach for you to take.

Turning Your Dream Hobby Into Your Career

We all have that special dream don’t we? The one where we love doing something and we wished we did it as a career? And yet there’s no way of achieving that is there? Think again. This is 2016 people. The world is ours for the taking. All you need to do is reach out and grab it. Here’s how the impossible can become the possible.

O.k. Let’s see if you get this. Let’s say your Dad works in an office. It’s 9-7. Long hours. Long commute. He absolutely hates it and yet all he does when he comes home is make his way into the large stretch of garden you have at the back and work on his pride of joy; making delicate animal wood carvings. This is what he lives for. He’s out for l day on weekends, going down to the beach or the local forest collecting all different shapes and sizes of wood to cater to his personal needs. He wishes he had more time to do this. He would jump at the chance to take this further. Well now he can. Why not look on the web and hunt down freelance work? Everybody wants something on the internet don’t they? Alternatively why not ask around friends and family or be social, go to some wood carving classes and ask around there for any potential work. Money may be tight at first but it was when you started your first job wasn’t it? Just remember that when the going gets tough, the tough get going. Once you start getting some orders in, you won’t be able to look back. Hand in your notice at work, say a fond farewell to the chaps and those monotonous repetitive office days will be long gone behind you. How about treating yourself for all the hard work you’ve done and go get yourself some brand spanking new tools? A chisel perhaps, a gouge or what about purchasing one of these saws that you get through companies like Straight Kerfs.

This is why reality TV programmes are so popular nowadays. Take a singing competition. The concept being that you think you have a hidden talent, be it singing in clubs and pubs or to the yellow plastic duck in the bath, so you get yourself off to an audition to sing in front of a group of music moguls. From then on, your dreams are hanging in the balance. They could be immediately shattered or start to be turned into reality. Succeed and you won’t believe in your wildest dreams what has happened. It will be a whole new life. A whole new career for you. It’s what you’ve always prayed to God for. The impossible becoming the possible.

It could be the same for everyone. Why not take that giant leap out into the unknown? The benefits could be enormous and the possibilities are now starting to be opened up to you. This is your time. Don’t miss the boat. Do what you’ve always dreamed of.

Is It Really Possible To Bottle Up Your Concerns?

We talk an awful lot about stress, often without really looking into its causes or fully understanding its effects. We might say “I’m just dealing with a lot of stress at work”. We may snap at someone, apologize and assure them that we’re just under stress. But for a lot of us, “stress” is something of a catch-all, foggy term that more or less means “I’m dealing with a lot, and it’s hard”.

The thing is, dealing with a lot is liable to cause stress. It’s one of the most common causes of chronic stress, but far from the only one. What a lot of us don’t realize is that stress is a reaction to a situation. While it can be chronic – that is, built up over time – it can also be acute. In many cases, stress is caused by a single incident that we then don’t fully process.

Sudden Bereavement

If you’ve recently lost someone, it’s common to decide to go back to work early on. You don’t want to be seen as exploiting the grief, and feel that keeping busy will be your best way of returning to some normality.

thinking-944076_960_720

Image From: PixaBay

What all such situations have in common is that people would entirely understand if the bereaved took longer to return. While too much time to think can be a problem, some counselling is the best approach here. Before you can return to work, it’s important to process what you have lost.

Witnessing A Traumatic Event

Although levels of violent crime are falling by any credible measure, humanity as a whole is more on alert for such crime. Part of this is down to the importance placed on knowing what you should do if it happens to you. But a lot is also down to the way things are reported in the news. A more high-adrenaline way of reporting news means that we’re more aware of violence.

man-1675685_960_720

Image From: PixaBay

Someone witnessing a violent incident can be placed very much on edge by what happens. It could be something as minor as a fight between two strangers, or as major as a terrorist attack. Until this is processed fully, they keep reliving the incident. This is where critical incident stress management, or CISM solutions, come in. By talking about how the incident affected them and why, a person can put it to rest.

Arguing With A Loved One

8055193189_056b28fdf5_n

Image From: Flickr

A situation that can affect us all too easily is if we go to work having just argued with someone we love. Although you want nothing more than to apologize and fix it, you’re at work and they’re somewhere else. You spend the whole day wishing you weren’t there, it affects every decision you make and the situation festers. A common reaction these days is to text the person to tell them you’re sorry.

Although this seems like the logical and right step, it is not necessarily so. An argument may have arisen for a number of reasons. These will need deeper discussion than your situation allows. Although an apology may be in order, it should be accompanied by a promise that you’ll talk properly later.

Simply texting “I’m sorry, you were right” just puts your loved one in an awkward situation. Either they have to accept an apology they’re not ready for, or reject it and seem like the baddie. Neither of these situations is fair on them, so take responsibility.

10 Essentials For Your Employee Handbook

handbook-765503_960_720

Link Here

It’s one of those things that businesses put off as long as they can. A good handbook is not only time-consuming to put together but must contain all the necessary information it requires. If you forget to include certain details, you could find yourself in a tricky position later on. It’s all about covering your back, as well as settling in your new employees as best you can. You can tinker around with what you include in your handbook to a certain extent, but there are a few necessities. Let’s take a look.

General Company Information

Most handbooks begin with a general blurb about the company and what it aims to achieve. This is a good way to get your new employee accustomed to the business and how it operates. You can get as extensive as you want in terms of what you include here. Normally, a bit about the company’s history is a good way to get started. Goals and the ethos of the business might come next, followed by a personal message from you directly. You can get quite creative with this.

Safety Policies
There are a whole bunch of safety policies that you should have in place when it comes to your business. These need to be documented in the handbook. Possibly the most important of all is your health and safety policy. You must get across your stance on health and safety in the workplace, including any relevant tailored information. This is especially important for businesses that regularly work in dangerous environments. Other policies can surround workplace bullying and data protection, both of which should be included.

industrial-1636367_960_720

Link Here

Disciplinary Procedures

It’s a requirement of your handbook that you outline the disciplinary procedures properly. If you fail to do this, a disgruntled employee could later point to the handbook as an inaccurate source of information. This could then assist them when claiming in an unfair dismissal case, for example. So, every detail about disciplinary should be outlined in full. You can’t just make it up as you go along – disciplinary actions must follow strict law guidelines. An employment law specialist can help with this if you’re in any doubt.

Technology Use Policies

There was a time when technology use policies would have been laughed at. These days, they’re an essential part of your handbook’s contents. There are a few reasons for this. Firstly, you need to protect the business by strictly prohibiting personal internet usage on company time. You might also have rules in place surrounding company phones and laptops. Also, as mentioned earlier, data protection is yet another very important consideration. Without implementing the right policies, you could just find your data getting into the wrong hands.

laptop-868816_960_720

Link Here

Holiday Entitlements

This one is fairly self-explanatory, and it relates to the holiday entitlements that your employees have. Every handbook should make these allowances clear in order to prevent any confusion going forward. Obviously, you’ll need to include the set amount of holiday that employees are allowed. Then, account for any extra entitlements they might get, and who they should contact when requesting holiday. You might have to add a few tailored rules in there about holiday request timings, too.

Dress Code & Behavioural Standards

This is another necessity that you’ll find in any good handbook out there. Start with the dress code, which you’ll need to be very detailed with. You’re not running a school, but you’d be amazed at how many people dress like a teenager when given the chance! So, be clear with exactly what is expected of your employees, or you’ll have no leg to stand on when they turn up in a hoodie. Of course, behavioural standards relate to how employees should act around the business. To prevent bullying, this should be documented and incorporated into your disciplinary procedure.

fashion-601553_960_720

Link Here

Additional Benefits

This is where we get a bit more tailored, and there’s no set structure for what you need to include. However, many companies operate an overtime structure, and this might be a good time to include it. So, make it clear how much employees should be expected to make when doing overtime to avoid any grievances later. Other benefits can include discounts, memberships and bonuses, and they should all be documented. If they’re not in the book, problems can arise.

Sickness & Grievance Procedures

Every company is required to have both sickness and grievance procedures, and you’ll need to document them as well. Like disciplinary procedures, both these areas can be tricky to get your ahead around from a legal perspective. So, brush up on your knowledge before you go drafting this area of the book. If you don’t follow the law to the letter, this is yet another area where you can get bitten in the backside.

get-well-soon-264506_960_720

Link Here

Payment Information

You can’t forget about this! You better believe that a new employee will skip to this section the first time they read the employee handbook. Sorry…all that effort you put into the company description will probably go unnoticed! Handbooks are rarely generated on an individual basis, so you’ll need to be generic with this. Don’t go into specific payment information, but note when employees should expect to be paid. All they want to know is when they’ll get their money, and how many deductions might be taken off it. Get all the relevant information in there.

Nondisclosure Policies

When you’re working with confidential data, you can’t afford for your employees to go blabbering about it. This is why you need nondisclosure policies. This policy also needs to account for those that leave the company. Sometimes, a business might prevent that person from encouraging others to leave as well. Or, it might have rules about working for an opposing company and sharing secrets.

If you have any concerns when drafting your employee handbook, be sure to consult the law. As long as you’re adhering from a legal standpoint, the rest will fall into place. Now, it’s time to get down to work and put that book together!

Motivating Your Employees Means Putting Them First

fashion-men-vintage-colorful-large

Actively Listen

A great habit for any entrepreneur to adopt is that of active listening. When business owners get into the routine of things, it can be all too easy to forget these little things. Yet, it is these little things which, in business, are all about the people. As long as the employees of an organisation feel that they are being taken care of, it is much more likely that everything else will fall into place. It is also true that well looked after employees are more likely to be highly motivated at work. Higher levels of motivation means more work is getting done, and that the work is of higher quality. But how does a business owner ensure that their employees feel genuinely cared for? There is considerable debate surrounding this topic. But following these four pieces of advice is likely to be a good place to start.

Be Fair

One of the easiest ways to upset people is by treating them unfairly. Whether it’s calculating holidays or the way in which you delegate, you need to make sure you are giving everyone an equal chance. Most of the time, a lack of fairness is a genuine accident. These accidents can easily be avoided by using the right hr system software. This kind of software makes it easier to see the actual data on all these issues. That means that the business owner can see if there is anything untoward going on. Remaining fair is one of the staples of looking after the employees in any line of business.

Really make the difference in terms of how the employees feel. If you have a business of your own, always remember that your employees probably have some good ideas to share. It is definitely worth keeping an open door policy for anyone who has an idea on how to improve the company. Beyond that, you should be paying attention to any feedback you are getting about how the business currently operates. As a general rule of thumb, it is sensible to assume that your employees know what they are talking about.

Allow Freedom Of Choices

All entrepreneurs are looking for that one golden solution to fix all of the business’ problems. These are hard to come by, if they exist at all. But there is one simple act which will rapidly improve the state of the business immediately: giving people more choices in their daily work. While it might be tempting to have rigid routines in place across the board, this is not often the best solution for your employees. What is much more effective is to allow them more choices in their work. This will enable a feeling of responsibility and empowerment across the business. It goes without saying that this will cause huge positive changes in your business.

Give A Helping Hand With Healthcare

Your employees’ well-being is centrally important to the business as a whole. After all, if they are not able to work, then you are going to struggle. With that in mind, make sure you are one of those employers who gives a little back when it comes to healthcare. Even something as simple as a free flu jab every year can make a big difference.

Home Business Got You Seeing Red? Try Going Green

We all know that running a home business can be stressful from time to time. For starters, it’s hard to separate work from pleasure when you’re constantly wedded to your place of work. But could going green help, if only in a small way? Check out these green ideas for your home office.

Use Biodegradable Cleaners

Did you know that the majority of cleaners you use around your home contain toxic chemicals? These chemicals aren’t just bad for your health, they’re bad for your mood too. Some cleaners contain chemicals, like phthalates. These chemicals then wind up in your body, disrupting your hormones, and generally messing with your mood. What’s more, they’re bad for the environment, as many of them contain other chemicals that don’t break down in landfill.

Here’s a green idea that’ll help: use biodegradable cleaners. These cleaners skip a lot of the harmful chemicals ordinarily found in regular cleaning products. And they are okay for the environment to boot. Next time you run out of detergent or surface spray, opt for the environmentally friendly alternative.

Get Rid Of Paper

There’s nothing more annoying in the home office than out of control piles of paper littering all your surfaces. Is there anything you can do about it?

Most LED bulbs come with shrouds that modify the light to make it appear more natural.

Web hosting is a small, but annoying cost for most small businesses. But you could save a bit of money by switching to a hosting service with green credentials. Thanks to the plummeting cost of solar, many green web hosting services are cheaper than their fossil fuel competitors. This means that you can save a bit of money, and look after the environment by switching. Why not give it a go?
