The Ultimate Driving Checklist For Weekend Camping Trips

Urban life is all good and well, but nothing can beat the feeling of setting off on a Friday afternoon for a weekend of hiking and camping in the great outdoors. Indeed, the sensation of being out in the wild is as freeing as owning a car and being able to drive wherever you please. It’s still a little bit chilly outside, but this is the perfect time to look forward to the great trips that await us as soon as the weather warms up a little bit. Will it be the Lake District, the Scottish Highlands, or even across into the continent for your camping trip? With a properly prepared vehicle, the choice will be yours.

A Well Oiled Machine

Taking a trip into the unknown is as good a time as any to make sure your vehicle is well lubricated and in tip-top shape. You’ll have taken care of the obvious one, petrol, just as you would before any long trip. However, petrol is more important on a camping trip. Why? Because you’re leaving civilisation, and there might not be as many petrol stations as you’d like. If you’re driving off the beaten path, make sure you have a full tank of petrol. Similarly, you’ll want to make sure you’ve topped up your oil before you go. Driving up and down valleys and especially mountains (if you’re on the continent) can play havoc with your car, so make it’s well fed in advance.

All in the Grip/Lighting the Way

If you don’t often taken camping trips, you might be surprised that driving isn’t all about smooth roads and genteel winding country tracks: once you step off the map, the terrain you encounter is anybody’s guess. You might be splashing your way through mud, tackling country dirt roads, or be driving on surfaces that aren’t cleared when it’s snowy or icy. This is all a way of saying: make sure your tires are up for the job. This could be as simple as checking your tire pressure gauge to make sure it’s as it should be or getting a new set from a company such as Wiltshire Tyres. You don’t want to any chances, especially if there’s a chance the roads might be slippery (in some places, snow will be on the ground well into spring!).

Additionally, you have to make sure your lights are all in working order before you set off. You might not notice that you’re missing lights when you’re driving around town, but will when you get out into the country and there are no lights anywhere to guide you.

Emergency Kit

Even the most reliable of cars can break down from time to time, and if you’re driving in difficult terrain, this becomes even more of a possibility. Make sure you pack an emergency kit in the pack of your vehicle besides your camping equipment. Luckily, you should have snacks and bottled water already with you as part of your trip supplies, but having a few specific car items can also go a long way.

Walk in Japan’s Bamboo Forests

Japan has all kinds of natural wonders, as well as the artificial man-made metropolis of Tokyo. But of all the natural sites you must see in Japan, the enchanting Bamboo Forests are among the very best. In fact, they’re breathtaking. The bamboo stalks tower over you so high, and the atmosphere is one of a kind. It’s like a normal forest, but at the same time, it’s completely different and unique. Hike Machu Picchu

Up high in the Andes Mountains, you’ll find the abandoned 15th-century citadel known as Machu Picchu. It was only discovered in relatively recent times, and seeing a city made 600 years ago is something you can’t do often. It has been untouched and unspoiled, and now tourists head up the mountain to see it for themselves. It’s something that you should definitely do once in your life because there is quite simply nothing else like it on Earth, so it shouldn’t be missed. You can go up there yourself or join a guided tour if you want more structure and guidance.

Enter The Car-nival Of Choas… And Get Out In One Piece!

800px-i-80_eastshore_fwy

Getting out onto the road should be a wonderful and joyous experience. Everyone on the roads should be suitable for them. And, the police in your area no doubt do a good job keeping the roads clean. But, there’s only so much good policing and careful driving can do for you. Sometimes, it’s a good idea to take a different approach. This post will go through some ways to make your journeys even safer, without breaking the bank.

A lot of roads are very remote. This means that it can be nearly impossible to get aid if you have an accident and get injured. If you can’t get mobile signal; you could be all alone. So, this is where a first aid kit comes in. When comparing the size of a car and a medical kit, it’s easy to see why there’s no excuse not to have one at all times. Almost all cars will have enough space to stow a kit somewhere, even if it’s just under a seat. A medical kit won’t only help when you’re stranded, though. Regardless of whether or not medical professionals are on their way, first aid can be the only thing that saves a life. Being able to stop bleeding, or at least slow it, before doctors arrive can be life-saving.

There are some other risks on the road, though. Other cars present the greatest example of this. But, so are other objects. When performing maneuvers that involve reversing, you are at much higher risk of a collision. It can be hard to keep checking your mirrors, and people often forget. Thankfully, a camera kit can help you here. Being able to see where you’re going without having to turn around gives you a chance to focus more on controlling the car. Having another camera on your dash will help against other drivers, too. If somebody hits you, with two cameras, you’ll have all of the evidence you need. This can tilt decisions by insurance companies, and help you to save money in the future. You can find camera kits for cars on loads of websites, like Safety Dave.

The tyres on your car play a very large role in the car’s safety. Tyres are designed to be pressurised, within a certain range. While in this range, they will perform well on the roads. Outside of this range, they can become quite dangerous, though. Tyres play a big part in keeping your car on the road. They help with turning and grip, and they prevent any metal from touching the road. This means that it’s very important to check your tyres every month or so. Use a tyre pressure gauge to make sure that your tyres are in good shape. Or, get your hands on a fancy monitor that can keep you updated about your tyre pressure all the time.
Hopefully, this will give you a good idea of what needs to be done to your car in order to make it safer on the road. Of course, there’s a lot more that you can do, as well. So, it’s worth doing some more research, until you’re satisfied that you know everything there is to know about car safety.

Back To Basics: Could You Survive Without Your Everyday Comforts?

800px-cramer_lakes_basin_from_alpine_lake_trail_in_sawtooth_wilderness

Now and then, the idea of a holiday pops into your head. But, holidays are expensive, so they’re usually just ruled out. But, what if you could get traveling, without paying anything at all? Or, at least very little. And, of course, you can! You just need to be willing to drop your modern essentials and get back to basics! Imagine spending a week in the wilderness, without any electronics or other distractions. Just you and nature. If this doesn’t appeal to you now, then you’ll probably not be interested in this post. But, if you like the sound of it, you should read on.

Pitching a tent and lighting a fire aren’t hard tasks by themselves. With the right tools and know-how, you can do these tasks in minutes. Camping gets hard when bad weather and unpleasant conditions take hold. So, it’s important to be prepared.

You should always look up the climate and weather of the place you plan to travel to. These will dictate the clothing that you take with you. When it comes to warmth, it’s much better to take too much than too little. But, you’ll still have to travel light, so it’s a good idea to make sure that you’re not taking too much. Try carrying your bag on a long walk, before going. If it’s too much now, it’ll be far too much when you’re hungry and tired.

Next, you need to consider food. If you’re a first-timer, it’s a bad idea to assume that you’ll be able to find food. Instead, you should take enough food to last the whole trip. The best foods to take into areas like this are dehydrated ones. They won’t turn bad and are light. You just need water to cook them, too. Of course, you’ll also need to be able to light a fire. But, a small stove could be a good backup, in case of bad weather.

A minor injury at home is nothing. You can bandage cuts and let pulls rest. But, out in the wild, you have to do more. Minor wounds can become infected, making them much worse. And, you probably won’t have a chance to put your feet up. It’s incredibly important to take the best ifak kit or first aid kit that you can. They will have everything you need to deal with more injuries, without having to lug around a huge medical back. This is an area that far too many people ignore. Small injuries will ruin your trip and could even be life-threatening if they’re not looked after. You can take a basic first aid course if you want to be extra prepared. This will give you a chance to practice using medical tools, before an emergency.
Hopefully, this will help you to decide if you have what it takes to get yourself out in the wilderness, camping under the stars. If not, then you might need a little more persuasion. Look at countries you’d like to visit, and then look at their countryside. This should inspire even the least outdoorsy person that camping is a good idea!

1 Country, 3 Provinces, 5 Experiences

pexels-photo-25148

https://www.pexels.com/photo/silver-and-black-robot-near-body-of-water-and-mountains-during-day-25148/

If you’re thinking of places that you might like to visit during your vacation time in 2017, here’s one to add to the lineup: Canada. Whether you’ve been or not, Canada is the perfect place to get a wide range of travel experiences ticked off of your list.

You may have a few locations in the US on your travel bucket list, but you can get to them next. First, you’ll want to visit the provinces Quebec, New Brunswick or Ontario in Canada for five very different reasons. From the food to the culture, sights and views, this country does not disappoint.

Feel The History

One of the best things about traveling can be seeing the actual country itself. When you visit somewhere new, you tend to take it all in. You want to learn all about it, understand the culture and see the history. When you go to Canada, Quebec City is an incredible place to visit for exactly that reason. Old Quebec is a historic town. You can get a great feel of the country’s history and culture all in one place. So if history is what you’re looking for, you’ll get dose after dose of it here.

Go Wild

Alongside the culture, Canada also has some pretty great wildlife and nature to keep an eye out for. If you’re heading to the country in 2017, why not put New Brunswick on your to see list. Say you’re staying at Amsterdam Inn & Suites, you can head to the coast and try to spot yourself a whale. Whale watching is popular in this province and it’s highly likely that you’ll catch a good look. So if you do add this to your list, you might want to pop a camera on it too!

Be Astounded

With Canada on your list, this one ought to be too. No matter what your preference are when you travel, your taste or your personality, if you’re in Canada (or New York state), you have to head to Niagara Falls. If you’re staying in Ontario or close by and planning on traveling, make sure Niagara Falls is at the top of your to-see list. This natural beauty will completely amaze you and probably top your experiences for the trip.

Take It All In

If you’re in Quebec, there’s a definite must-see for anyone that loved culture, art, history, architecture or anything breathtaking. The Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal is an incredible sight. As its name suggests, it’s a basilica, but it an absolute beauty at that. If you’re planning on passing by Montreal or even staying there, the Notre Dame Basilica has to take up at least one of your days.

See The Culture

If culture is what you’re looking for, then you probably want to add a range of museums or galleries to your hit list. While in Canada, make sure you either stay in or visit Ontario. The Royal Ontario Museum is exactly what you’re looking for. Full of great lines ups for the exhibitions and galleries, you can even team up your visit with a feature that appeals to you.

luggage-1149289_960_720

Image:

Taking a gap year or extended break from your homeland is a major life decision. When handled properly, though, it can be one of the most rewarding. Not only can it teach you about the world by giving you magical memories. Perhaps more importantly, it can teach you about yourself.

For most people, this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Therefore, it’s imperative that you make the most of it. Here are five top tips to maximise your enjoyment.

Go Alone

It can be tempting to travel with a friend, and it will certainly feel less daunting. But if you truly want to develop as a person, going alone is the only solution. Not only does it force you to take responsibility, but it gives you far greater control.

With nobody else to worry about, you can focus on what’s best for you. Besides, you can always use the internet to make acquaintances before you leave. Even if you don’t, you’ll be sure to meet lots of people out there.

Connect With The World

A gap year offers an incredible opportunity to explore new locations, and you should grab that opportunity. Of course, there will be time for wild nights. But it would be a major shame to miss out on the attractions that your chosen destination has to offer.

Embracing tech-free activities is the ultimate way to maximise your joy on those journeys. That’s not to say you can’t enjoy taking some photos etc. Nevertheless, you won’t see the full benefits if your head is constantly buried in your iPhone. Interact with your surrounding and you’ll gain far more.

And People

Your surroundings are key, but people are the most important element for a successful gap year. Soaking in their culture can teach valuable life skills and influence your way of thinking. Without question, it will make you a better person.

Meanwhile, a little volunteering work can provide a far greater insight than any other aspect of your trip. Staying in touch is easier than ever thanks to modern communication too, so you may make friends for life. Even if you don’t, it will certainly boost your enjoyment.

Get A Job

Some gap year takers will want to move around every couple of weeks to see as much of the world as possible. That’s fine. On the other hand, it’s important to remember that you will return to the real world at some stage. Admin clerk vacancies can be found here, and it could be key to a truly successful part of your life.

Let’s face it; the skills and experience will work wonders in the future while you may even decide to settle for life. In the immediate future, the money gained from a decent job will allow you to enjoy your leisure time to the fullest.

Be Open Minded

The gap year is a major life experience, and you will almost certainly put a lot of planning into the process. You won’t want to abandon those completely. Nonetheless, being open to deviation is crucial. Go with the flow, and it will be the best year of your life.

Your Secret Weapon: Getting A Lot More Out Of Your Smartphone When Travelling

Let’s start with an important point. We’re not suggesting that everyone spend their vacations with their faces buried in their phones. For the duration of the holiday, it’s worth considering switching off Facebook, Skype, and the rest. But that’s not to say that your phone can’t be one of the most valuable tools for making a holiday even more enjoyable.

pexels-photo

Pic Link

Avoiding the most dreaded problem

Modern phones are, honestly, pretty terrible when it comes to battery life. You can use your phone for all kinds of things, but only so long as you can keep it on. If you’re traveling, you seriously want to consider getting a tool to help you do so. Looking at some of the features of a good power bank, it’s hard to dispute the reasoning. Just make sure you consider things like battery type and charging speed before you pick it up.

Finding the best stops

If you’re on a road trip, then having a phone can be pretty vital to the trip. Sure, it’s about exploring. But exploring poor quality road-side restaurants doesn’t sound like much of an adventure. Instead, you can use apps like RoadTripper if you’re vacationing in the US. Apps like those can help you choose a route with better sights, better food and better places to sleep.

landing-stage-sea-holiday-vacation

Pic Link

Getting you and your pals organized

If you’re not traveling alone, it can be something of a hassle. People have different ideas of what’s happening and where you’re going. Doing anything in a group can be stressful, so those extra conflicts aren’t welcome. Consider apps like Evernote, that can help you all put your notes together and keep communicating and organized. That way, everyone’s looking at the same itinerary and no-one’s arguing on how you’re supposed to spend your time.

A personal travel guide

On the other hand, if you have nothing in your itinerary, that’s nothing to worry about, either. The internet can be a wonderful source of information but it can also be pretty overwhelming. For good advice on where to stop in your next destination, you want proper travel apps with information by travelers for travelers. It’s also worth noting that you should choose apps that allow you to use them offline, like Triposo. You never know how good connectivity will be when you’re out and about.

pexels-photo-1

Pic Link

A translator

The language barrier has been a consistent problem for the unprepared. It’s a good idea to learn some functional levels of the language for where you’re going to. But that functional language might make it hard to navigate train options or order at a restaurant. For those situations, there are plenty of translation apps that can help you in a jam. There are even some that can help you translate speech. Yet it’s always a smart idea to expect some errors when dealing with voice recognition software.

From helping you get around to making sure you’re ordering something you’ll actually find edible. Phones can be a very handy traveling partner. As we said up top, just make sure you’re spending enough time looking up from it to actually enjoy your holiday.

Off The Grid: Three Fabulous Tech Free Activities

Does is ever feel like technology completely dominates your life? As if you can’t go thirty seconds without the beep of some gadget or another grabbing your attention. Not to mention the fact that most of us spend the majority of our days staring at screens. It can all get a bit… clinical feeling, not to mention claustrophobic. It’s easy to forget just how wonderful and fascinating the world around us really is. There are so many incredible things to see and do in the natural world that it’s a real shame we spend so much time staring at our phones that we miss them. Fortunately, that means that there is always the chance to get away from it all and enjoy some tech-free activities. Here are a few of my favorite ways to get off the grid.

Surfing

surfing-1208255_960_720

You know what a major issue with a lot of gadgets is? Waterproofing. Anyone who’s ever dropped their phone in the bath and then spent hours with it sat in a bowl of rice will know that for certain. Luckily this turns out to be a blessing in disguise if you want a way to rid yourself of technological temptation. Surfing is one of the most fun and exciting things that you can do. Nothing makes you feel closer to the world around you than the smell of sea air and the refreshing splash of the waves. There are lots of different places to try surfing no matter what your skill level. And if you’re a bit afraid of getting up onto the board then you can try bodyboarding as well.

Hiking

hiking_in_the_talkeetna_mountains_of_alaska

Now this one might take a bit of discipline because you can technically bring your gadgets along with you. But not only will that defeat the purpose entirely, but it’ll also burden you with extra stuff that you probably won’t want to carry for long. All you need to do is find a trail and get lost in nature. You might be tempted to snap some pictures for social media but why not just enjoy the sights. You’ll always have those memories, and they’ll look that much nicer when you’re not looking through a screen. Places like Big Bend hiking allow you to pick trails to suit your level and they all provide some incredible scenery. And the best thing about hiking? It’s free! Make sure you pack some decent boots, though!

Camping

pexels-photo-14287

If you need a five-star hotel with room service, then you might want to look away now. Camping is just about the best way to get off the grid and back to nature. Sleeping on the ground with just a sleeping back underneath you and a tent keeping you safe from the elements. Cooking up beans in the can with nothing but the sounds of nature for company. There really is nothing like it! Now, of course, there are lots of campsites that offer more modern conveniences, like indoor toilets, if you don’t want to go completely rough. But for the full experience try to avoid bringing your gadgets along with you at all. After a while, you won’t even miss them anymore!
