Age Is Only A Number! Giving Yourself New Approaches To Health As You Get Older

heart-care-1040229_960_720

Image from Pixabay

The onset of age comes with many different worries regardless of how young, middle-aged or “old” you are. And as someone once said, it is not how old you are, it is how you are old! A lot of people seem to think that as soon as you hit 35 you need to start thinking about where you want to retire to, and what’s going to happen to your grandkids, but the fact of the matter is that it is not about preparing for the ravages of age, it is about preventing the ravages of age. Here are a couple of simple tips to think about as you get older.

Checking Yourself

It can never be underestimated the importance of examining yourself for irregularities such as lumps or abnormal growths, and this isn’t something that is confined to when you are over 40. This is something you should be doing every time you go in the shower regardless of how old you are, as when you do get older, you are more susceptible to any kinds of diseases, including cancer, which affects one-third of all people in the Western world. So whether you should have a regular breast exam, or you go to a doctor for your prostate check ups, you need to be examining yourself also.

Diet

Everybody talks about diets and really it isn’t about “diets” per se, as a diet implies that it is a temporary thing. Instead, if you said it was a “lifestyle change,” that is a lot easier to comprehend. Also, the potential for diabetes and heart disease increases as you get older, so learning good dietary habits when you are younger as opposed to changing your whole way of eating, which is a lot more difficult when you’re older, is something that we need to be teaching our kids and our grandkids. If you’re reading this as someone in your 20s, then swapping one meal a week that consists of a burger and fries to a plate of steamed vegetables and fish is a good starting point.

Exercise

A lot of people talk about hitting the gym seven days a week in order to fight off belly fat. But in actual fact if you are going to the gym seven days a week you might be putting your body under too much pressure, which can have a stressing effect on your body, ramping up the amount of cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, which can stop you putting on muscle. Instead, going a healthy amount of times to the gym, such as three or four times a week, is sufficient enough. Or if you do not have the time, then either finding hobbies that demand physical activity, or by participating in high intensity interval training, are ways to help keep you fit while making the most of your time.

Relaxing

With the amount of information we are bombarded with, we can easily get overstimulated regardless of our age. So by getting into the habit of putting your phone away for an hour before bedtime, will help you to sleep more soundly. Or if you are into more spiritual pursuits then meditating for 10 minutes in the morning has proven to reduce stress and give long-term heath benefits.

The Functional, No-Fuss Kitchen And How To Achieve It

potato-544073_960_720

With an ever-increasing number of cookery shows and the rising popularity of celebrity chefs, it’s easy to get caught up in the latest cooking fads. For example, purchasing fancy branded crockery or investing in the latest stylish food mixer. Those are the items that end up cluttering your work surfaces or gathering dust in the cupboard. They leave a sizeable hole in your bank balance, and your food doesn’t get any better.

Rather than copying someone else’s dream kitchen, think about what would really work for you. Focus on function.

How Do You Use Your Kitchen?

For many of us, the kitchen is much more than a place to prepare food. Often it’s the hub of the whole house. It’s the place we gather as a family, to drink coffee and eat meals. Our kids do their homework on the kitchen table, and our pets find a cozy place to nap. We leave each other messages on the fridge or display our latest achievements.

How do you use your kitchen? Make a list of its various functions. This is a good starting point. If you’re clear on its various uses, you can go ahead and make improvements.

bell-pepper-569070_960_720

Get Rid Of Anything That Isn’t Useful

Regina Brett advises us to ‘get rid of anything that isn’t beautiful, useful or joyful’. This is good advice, especially in the kitchen. Clutter, as well as being visually unappealing, slows processes and gets in the way of everyday functions. Creating an efficient kitchen often starts with having a sort out and moving things around. Go through everything cupboard by cupboard and discard anything that is no longer useful. Give it to friends, recycle or bin it.

There is no list or rules to advise you when going through this process. It’s a very personal choice. For example, if you’re a coffee aficionado, that large coffee machine on the counter will be vital. If you’re not and it’s just in the way, it’s time to ditch it.

Invest In Equipment And Accessories That Will Work For You

Before investing in new appliances, tools or machinery, ask yourself how it will improve your life. This could be by saving time, bringing pleasure, expanding meal choices, etc. Then ask yourself, whether you intend to use it and if so, how often. If you’re unsure, wait a few days. Are there any other areas you could invest in to bring greater benefits?

There’s nothing wrong with buying new appliances; you just need to ensure that they are useful. For example, if you love home cooked food but are short on time, opt for labor-saving devices such as a convection microwave. This will prepare a roast chicken in a fraction of the time and will also brown it for you. Always shop around and read reviews, such as recent countertop microwave reviews. Dishwashers and slow cookers will also provide you with more time.

sink-1417457_960_720

Create Zones

If your kitchen is multifunctional, think in terms of zones. For example, you’ll have a zone for cooking and preparing food, an area for washing up, an area for eating and homework, etc. Ensure each zone is as efficient as possible. Large overhead lights will make eating and homework easier, whereas countertop lights will work best for preparing food.

Ensure you have adequate storage space if areas are used for different purposes. Tables with built-in drawers make setting the table a breeze and will remove clutter when the table is being used for something else.
The next time you’re deliberating over whether to buy the latest kitchen accessory, spend some time considering whether it will be useful, what benefits it will bring, and if there’s anything else that will provide greater benefits. When it comes to the kitchen, focus on function.

How You Can Stay Alert Throughout The Day

The days just fly by these days. You’ve likely got kids to drop to school, a job to get to, chores to get done, the list goes on. It can sometimes be hard to stay upbeat and alert. But the key to happiness can be found by using various techniques and supplements to keep you going strong. If you’re struggling day to day then perhaps these can help you.

Water

Not just the one bottle, but if you can get yourself into a good system, whereby you’re drinking it constantly throughout the day then water can give you the energy you need to be successful. It also relieves fatigue, so if you’re running around all day it can help you feel more alert and less tired. There’s a huge amount of health benefits that come with drinking water too, so there’s no excuse not to. If you just keep a bottle at hand it will soon become second nature to keep taking sips throughout the day.

Coffee

Coffee, of course containing caffeine, is one of the best ways to start your day. The amount of people who walk around with a Starbucks cup in the morning has become ridiculous, especially when there are some great and tasty coffee you can make at home. The best instant coffee can give you the energy you need to push through the morning. It also stimulates the brain in a way that can potentially make you more productive. Just be careful not to drink super large quantities of it throughout the day or to drink it too late or it can affect your sleep.

Caffeine Pills

Many people don’t actually like coffee, be it the taste or the feeling. Whilst some won’t have time to make coffee in the morning if they’re on a tight schedule. If this is the case it can be worth popping a quick caffeine pill in the morning before you leave the house. They can improve your concentration and reduce exertion. They are also great before embarking on a strenuous sports activity such as a long cycle or swim. Again, they are best swallowed in the morning or before strenuous activity.

Exercise

Exercise can keep your energy flowing by increasing the productivity of your heart and increasing circulation around your body. The more you exercise the more energy you’ll have to spend throughout the day. It can be a great idea to go for a long walk at the end of the day or a run in the morning before work. It will be hard at first, but the more you do the quicker you’ll get into a killer routine. You likely know about the brilliant health benefits of exercising, so even if you just start off by going on weekly runs it can help you in your day to day life by allowing you to fatigue less and stay productive for longer.

You need to choose the method and balance that is right for you, a mixture of exercise and water is a great bet, or perhaps a caffeine pill in the morning and exercise at night. It all depends what kind of job you do and how tired you actually get.

Buzz Buzz! Exciting Ways to Get Your Coffee Fix!

coffee-1569682_960_720

Coffee is one of the greatest substances on this planet. Not only does it help get your brain into gear when you need it most, but it also helps improve your mood and even aids in pain relief. If you want to take your coffee-drinking experiences to the next level, then we’ve got an amazing guide for you. Stop drinking that freeze-dried instant stuff – it’s time to really treat yourself to some rich coffee delights.

Machines for serious enthusiasts

If you’re looking to move away from instant coffee, then it’s probably time for you to start looking a the ways the experts make their coffee! A French press is probably the most basic step up, and can deliver some amazing coffee. But if you like your coffee pure but quick, you could look into machines such as the Espresso Gusto. If you want to add some more excitement to your coffee while keeping things inspired by the professionals, then you can consider getting flavored syrups for your caffeine fix. Oh, and remember to buy a brush grinder so you can clean up those grounds more efficiently too.

Caffeine-rich smoothies

Coffee doesn’t go in every smoothie, of course. Fruits like strawberries, apples, and lemon, for example, really don’t go well with that dark, rich flavor. But there are several fruits and nuts that make surprisingly great partners for coffee in a smoothie. Banana may be the most obvious one to many people – a coffee-banana smoothie, often misleadingly called a banoffee smoothie, makes for an amazing breakfast! Orange, almond, chocolate, and coconut also go great with the brew.

Coffee snacks

You know those overpriced ‘energy ball’ snacks you can get in pretty much any health store? You can make those yourself at home – and you can make them even more potent if you give them an espresso kick! You can actually put coffee in a lot of snacks. Mocha pancakes are a great way to give yourself a quick energy boost if you want something light. Coffee muffins aren’t quite as easy to get right as the others, but those looking for a quick breakfast may want to make a bunch over the weekend then eat them on the way to work throughout the week for a super-tasty boost!

Delicious desserts

When one thinks about “coffee” and “dessert” in the same sentence, then they inevitably think about tiramisu. Tiramisu can be made with more of a focus on the sweeter elements or with a stronger focus on the coffee. (A little booze also helps give it a powerful kick!) Tiramisu isn’t the easiest thing to get right, though. If you’re looking for something simpler, then you should look into baking a coffee cake.

Roast your own

If you want to get really adventurous, then you could look into getting your own coffee beans and then roasting them yourself! This is the ultimate way to experiment and achieve a taste you really like. It requires a lot of practice, though, and is hardly the quick way to get your caffeine fix! Still, if you want to learn more about the art of coffee, then it’s certainly something you should think about.

How To Get More From Your Workout

pexels-photo-196654

https://www.pexels.com/photo/woman-in-white-jacket-holding-silver-iphone-196654/

If you’re starting to feel like your exercise routine has gotten a little bit stale, you might become bored with it and even give up. Alternative, you could also be finding that your results have stopped improving at the rates they were, or that you’re not seen any impact at all. If that’s the case, then you might need to starting thinking about how you can boost your workout and get more out of it. If you’ve tried a different approach or to change things up and you’re still not feeling inspired, hopefully, these tips will help.

Get In The Zone

First of all, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re in the zone. Committing to your workout and being consistent isn’t enough. If you’re putting minimal effort in or stopping when you’re not at your potential, you’re going to get bored eventually. Instead, you need to learn to push through a tough workout. When you do, you’ll start to see a lot better progress in your results.

Fuel And Refuel

Another reason why you could be struggling with your workout is by being exhausted. You might feel like you’ve got enough energy to get through it, but if you’re not fuelling your workout correctly, you’ll not be working to your highest potential. Make sure that you get the right balance between carbs and proteins before your workout. You’re also going to want to make sure that refuel after you’ve finished too. That way, you’ll recover more efficiently and be able to do it all over again tomorrow.

pexels-photo-110470

https://www.pexels.com/photo/healthy-clouds-high-line-girl-110470/

Streamline Your Sound

If you’re struggling to focus or really get into your workout, you might be too distracted. If you can never beat your time on the treadmill or get an extra rep with weight, you might be too involved in the room that you’re in. Instead of getting distracted by other people or even what’s on the TV, you might want to get yourself a pair of wireless headphones (discover more on how they work here), blast your music and lose yourself in your workout.

Stretch And Release

Another way to help your body reap as many benefits from your workout as possible is to stretch properly. If your muscles are tight, they’re not going to be able to perform as well when you’re exercising. So, you’re going to want to start adding a stretching session into your workout routine. You could also try yoga if you want to get the most out of stretching and it’s always a good idea to invest in a foam roller to roll out your muscles before and after a workout.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

And finally, if you’re not getting enough sleep, you could be hindering your workouts overall. Sleep is so important, especially when you’re into exercise. You have to let your body heal and recover so that it can take on your next session. When you skip sleep, you’re underestimating the damage that can be done. So if you never get a solid 7-8 hours of sleep each night, you might want to start.

Which Are The Hottest Industries For Startups Right Now?

We’re in the midst of something of a startup boom at the moment. More people than ever before are starting their own companies, hoping to hit the big time. But in amongst this frenzy of entrepreneurial activity are some industries that are doing particularly well according to Forbes. No doubt if you want to be an entrepreneur yourself, you want to know what these industries are. Let’s take a look.

Street Food Vendors

800px-bangkok_08_-_01_-_street_vendors_3165967337

Wikimedia Commons

We’ve seen a lot of creative restaurant ideas come from people who started as street vendors. But now the street vending industry itself – if you can call it that – is experiencing dramatic growth. Thanks to the number of people who are giving it a go. Street vendors are expecting their revenues to grow by more than 3.7 percent over the next five years, bringing the total value of the industry up to $1.7 billion. The increase in demand for convenience food on the street corner is being driven by consumer’s desire for unique and interesting food that’s cheap and easily accessible. Thus, the advice to street vendors right now is to create a menu that is interesting. Of course, metropolitan areas have seen the growth in street vendors for many years not, but analysts at IBIS expect that street food is going to start showing up in more places than just on street corners in places like New York. Profit margins are currently running at 23 percent for the industry by the latest figures.

Wineries

800px-small_garage_winerys_barrels

Wikimedia Commons

The alcoholic beverage industry has been growing strongly recently, despite public health attempts to restrict the amount of wine and beer people are consuming. But the strongest area of growth isn’t in the big manufacturers  – it’s the small-scale, craft wineries that are creating the biggest buzz. It turns out that consumers want something a little more interesting than the commercially produced wine when they decide to spend their disposable income. They want something that is unique and will bring a new and authentic experience. Of course, part of the booming popularity of craft wines is the fact that in many metropolitan areas, disposable income is on the rise. It’s an opportunity for entrepreneurs to get into wine-making and to make a lot of money. IBIS says that the profit margin in the industry is 7.6 percent and that annual revenues are growing by more than 5 percent a year.

Ethnic Supermarkets

800px-kmart

Wikimedia Commons

Ethnic supermarkets import foods and brands specific to a particular culture and sell them on in a cosmopolitan market. With mass immigration and changing food culture in the West, these ethnic stores are becoming a lot more common and more in demand. According to IBIS, cultural food stores have experienced “tremendous” growth, with Asians and Hispanics driving much of that growth in the US. According to the latest figures, something like 98 percent of ethnic supermarkets serve these groups. Currently, the industry’s revenues are growing at an impressive 3.7 % per annum. Back in 2011, the last time figures were available, profit margins were running at 2.8 percent.

Choosing Somewhere To Eat – What You Should Consider

Whether you are travelling or in your hometown, being able to choose a decent place to eat is a surprisingly useful skill. And if you are a keen amateur food critic, then you can have fun trying out different restaurants to see how they compare. The fact is, there are a few different qualities which you might want to consider during this process. As long as you are aware of what those are, it is much more likely that your choice will always be one that you are happy with. If you are going out to eat with someone else, it might be even more important that you make the right decision. Either way, let’s take a look at some of the major things that you should consider when you are choosing somewhere to eat.

menu-restaurant-vintage-table

Location

This first one might not sound so important, but it is actually surprisingly so. The location of the restaurant has a significant effect on the overall experience, and that is worth bearing in mind. When you are choosing restaurants, make sure that it is somewhere not too out-of-the-way. This doesn’t mean, of course, that you should always stay central, but you should at least take it on board in your decision. Even think about things like parking and what is nearby. All of this is part of the experience, and as such it all needs consideration.

Price Range

Often, it looks as though good food has to break the bank. However, this is not the case. No matter what kind of food you are after, there is no particular reason that you need to bankrupt yourself to find a decent example of it! One of the most valuable things (literally) you will learn by trying out different establishments is that you can get a huge amount of varied meals without paying through the nose for them. As such, this is definitely something that you should consider in your quest for the ideal restaurant. Of course, sometimes you might feel a bit rich – in which case, knock yourself out – go somewhere fancy.

pexels-photo-30503

Cleanliness

Again, while it might not be the first thing you think of, it makes a huge difference to your overall experience. As soon as you step into a restaurant which is not well cleaned, you know it, and it can often ruin your meal immediately. The cleanliness of a restaurant is the kind of thing you would like to be a given – but it is not, and you should remember that when you are choosing somewhere to eat. You can soon tell by telltale signs whether or not a place is clean – if it isn’t, consider going elsewhere.

Quality Of Menu

Finally, we come to one of the more obvious things to consider. It goes without saying that you want to end up with a meal which you will enjoy as much as possible. As such, start to compare the local restaurants in your area, and get to develop a sense for what is good quality food and what could be improved.

Nature’s Relief: 6 Foods To Keep Pain In Check

Nature’s Relief: 6 Foods To Keep Pain In Check

So! I don’t know about you, but I’m not really the biggest fan of pain. The great American philosopher Swayze once said that “pain don’t hurt”, but I suspect he was merely trying to impress Kelly Lynch. Anyway, prescription pain medication may do the job at first, but it can lead to all sorts of problems further down the line. I like to do things a bit more naturally, so here are my top seven pain-fighting foods to help safely manage your discomfort.

  1. Ginger

ginger-1191927_960_720

Good old ginger. It’s sweet, fiery and tastes like Christmas, and it’s one of best natural painkillers out there. In fact, it’s a bona fide anti-inflammatory marvel! Ginger will tear nausea’s throat out and deliver a swift roundhouse to stomach upset (okay, I’m done with Roadhouse now). Oh, and it is also excellent for period pains. There’s a ton of ways you can take it, too; including grated over dishes, mixed into smoothies and boiled into a tea. Just, y’know, avoid the ginger wine. Bad.

  1. Chilli peppers

chili-red-sharp-spice-42259

Psychic spies from China may indeed be trying to steal your mind’s elation, but that doesn’t diminish the effectiveness of red-hot chilli peppers in cutting down pain. The capsaicin in these spicy veggies goes straight to work on your nerves, blocking off the chemicals that carry pain signals around. Cool, eh? If you’ve got arthritis, try applying topical capsaicin cream to the affected areas.

  1. Oily fish

salmon-518032_960_720

You’ve probably heard all about the virtues of omega-3 oil (it was definitely the ‘in’ thing a few years ago), but you might not know just how handy it can be for reducing soreness. It lowers inflammation, which makes it great for joint and neck pain relief. It’s found mainly in oily fish like salmon, herring, anchovies, mackerel and sardines. If that doesn’t appeal, try flaxseed, chia seeds, egg yolks and walnuts. Plenty of choice!

  1. Nuts, seeds and dark, leafy vegetables

various-seeds-pumpkin-nuts-seeds-apple-grains-725x544

All right, so sticking multiple items in the same entry is cheating a bit, but I’m sure your body won’t mind. The keyword here is ‘magnesium’, and all of these foods are positively dripping with it. Magnesium is essential in keeping your bones and muscles healthy, and a lack of it could result in a multitude of aches and pains. Avocado is another I’d like to add to the list. Why? Because it’s awesome, that’s why.

  1. Peppermint

800px-mint-leaves-2007

Another fine addition to your blossoming food/medicine cupboard, peppermint is a bit of a natural wonder. It can help with everything from toothaches to irritable bowel syndrome. Not to mention muscle pains, headaches, joint irritations, skin inflammations… you get the idea. Your best bet is either fresh peppermint leaves or concentrated oil, which gives you a lot of scope for application.

  1. Coffee

coffee-631768_960_720

Yep! Even a cup of morning go-juice can assist with headaches and muscular strains. If you’re really suffering, try taking a common, over-the-counter painkiller at the same time. The caffeine will send it into overdrive, delivering a much more powerful kick. However! Coffee only does the trick if you don’t drink it much, and caffeine withdrawal brings a whole new set of colourful problems. This one is for emergencies only, got it?

Stop Smoking Already!

I just can’t help it! When I see someone smoking, especially here in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, where I live, I just can’t get over it. At least, where I used to live, in Southern California, the air was often smoggy, (However, significant progress in the region’s air quality has been made over the years.) so, in a way, it somehow didn’t seem as bad when I saw someone smoking. But here, in the Pacific Northwest, with its pristine air, it just seems like smokers here are really robbing themselves of some of the best air on the planet!

But in reality, smokers rob themselves regardless of how polluted their local air is. Oh, I know, the rate of smoking has dropped, especially since the 1940’s, when it seemed every adult smoked. (Just watch an old movie from 1960 or earlier!)

But those who continue to smoke are still robbing themselves, and not only health-wise, but financially. And, those of us, like me, who are not smokers, probably know, or have known, at least one person who is. And you may have tried at times to get them to quit.

Unfortunately, the health threat argument often doesn’t scare a smoker into quitting. After all, cancer and heart disease aren’t like bears at the gate presenting an immediate and obvious threat in most cases, and when they do, it is often too late.

But, the financial drag of smoking, not even counting the financial side of the health threat, is significant and shows itself every time a smoker buys more cigarettes! Perhaps this argument can carry more immediate weight with some smokers. So here it is.

Now, a smoker might not think the cost of a single pack is enough to justify quitting.  Recently, I was in a store and was waiting to check out, and I noticed the prices of the cigarettes. The lowest cost pack was $4.70. Again, $4.70 might not seem like that big a deal.  But let’s take a look at an example below, starting with a price breakdown as well as a longer term view.

First, the breakdown. Let’s assume that a smoker smokes only half a pack a day. And buys a pack for only $4.00 even. A pack usually contains 20 cigarettes. That’s 20 cents per cigarette. Cheap? If the smoker smokes just one a day, then it is. But our smoker smokes half a pack, or 10 cigarettes a day. That’s $2 a day.

Now, for the longer term view.

In a week, that’s $14.

In a 30 day month, that’s $60.

In a 365 day year, that’s $730!

Just think of what an extra $730 can get you. In some cases, that could be an extra month’s rent or an extra 1-2 month’s groceries or an extra brake job on the car, or airfare, or a week or more at a hotel, and then some! Surely, you can think of a time in the past year when an extra $730 would have come in handy!

And remember, that’s just smoking half a pack of cigarettes a day! Many smokers smoke more than this, some, a lot more. And some, if not most, cigarettes run more than $4 a pack.

Using the $4-a-pack example above, a full pack-a-day smoker is looking at spending $1,460 yearly!  This amount of money can possibly buy you a pre-owned 1990’s vehicle that is in decent, if well-used, condition, in some cases! Just check out Craigslist for Ford Aerostar vans!

So, to smokers, look at this example to see how much you are spending to …kill yourselves.

And to those who are trying to get a smoker to quit to little or no effect, try this argument. Find out how many cigarettes or packs they smoke daily, and how much they pay per pack. Then, crunch the numbers and show them the results. I think they’ll be stunned.

To smokers, I hope you succeed in quitting! To those trying to get a smoker to quit, I wish you luck and hope that this argument works!

Hate to Cook After a Long Day? Try This!

You’ve had a long day at work and now you have to cook dinner and you’re tired. And you don’t want to go out, either. So, what to do?

Maybe try a meal delivery service! I worked for one for a short time last year, delivering meals directly to people’s homes along a route.

Yes, these services do exist, offering different plans for different needs. The company I worked for featured fully cooked dinners. No drinks are included and people sign up and can choose which days they want meals delivered, and can also have special consideration for food allergies and dislikes. The company also provided insulated bags on request. It provided a good service. Other companies will provide drinks or other variations of service.

Of course, there is a charge, and most companies have customers create accounts. And it may not be for everyone, either. But I can see how it can benefit those who have long workdays or just plain hate to cook.

Some may think this is only for senior citizens, but my clients included all types of people, young, old, families, single, and other multiple living arrangements.

So, if you don’t like to cook, or just don’t have the time, you may want to check out a meal delivery service. Bon Appetit!
