I’m not a fan of suits. Sure, they look kinda cool. But using them to make your business look more professional? It’s lazy. Suits are becoming less and less popular in modern businesses, and for good reason.

Don’t weep for the death of the business suit. There are plenty of other ways for you to look more professional.

Improve that website

A shocking amount of business websites look like they were created in the early 2000s and haven’t been updated since. And many of the ones that look modern look like they were set up in just a few seconds using free website creation tools. Your website needs to look stunning and unique. This will help you look more professional.

Don’t mix personal and business

People say you should do this. It’s becoming more acceptable in the age of smartphones and social media. They say it helps bring personality to your business. But let’s face it: it’s difficult to control what happens in either our business or our private life. You don’t want some unexpected (or embarrassing!) event in one to damage the prestige of the other. So do your best to keep the two separate.

Let the world know you’re real people

Yes, I did just say that you shouldn’t mix personal and business as much as some may suggest. But you should still be able to let people know who you are, especially if you’re the one running the business. Your website should feature photos or even small bios of you and your team. You may think this makes you look like you’re treating the site as you would social media. What you’re actually doing is demonstrating that you’re proud to have your faces associated with the business.

Look into uniforms or name tags

I am trying to stay away from the “suit” suggestion. But some jobs certainly do function better when uniforms are in place. Let’s say you’ve got a restaurant or a brick-and-mortar retail business. Uniforms simply make it easier for customers to identify who works here and who doesn’t! If you don’t want to use uniforms, you could always look into corporate name tags. These work great with uniforms, but if you want employees to wear their own clothes, then name tags can do the trick.

Get an office…

Offices can be pretty overrated. And it’s true that you don’t need an office to run a successful business. Teleworking has made success outside of the office pretty feasible, after all! But let’s say you have a lot of employees. Or that you need to meet and impress clients quite often. In this case, you should probably look into getting an office. You don’t have to move all of your employees into it. But having a main hub of operations definitely makes you seem more professional.

…and keep it neat

Of course, offices can look pretty darn unprofessional if you’re not careful. Yes, it’s true that a bit of clutter makes it look like you’re hard workers. I’m not saying your office needs to be spick and span. But it does need to look neat. It shouldn’t look like utter chaos. Besides, an office that’s too messy can pose a safety risk!

Having a well-cultured workplace doesn’t mean that you have a vastly diverse pool of staff. It means that you and your staff are well-connected and understand each other. Your staff is happy, and they respect your authority.

Building up a relationship like this with your staff can be hard. So, it’s best if you begin building these bridges from the moment you meet them. This post will go through some of the ways that you can build your company into a cultured business.

 

  • Assessments

 

Your staff will struggle to understand how well they are doing, without being assessed. Assessments should be done on a regular basis and should be aimed at developing your staff’s skillsets and work ethic. This will allow you to let your employees know when they are falling short. But, it will also give you an excellent opportunity to tell them where they’re doing well. Without their weak spots being the focus, you can make even a negative assessment leave the employee feeling confident. This is one of the key steps in building a culturized company.

When your staff perform well or go out of their way to help, they should be treated as such. It’s best to give rewards out in groups so that people don’t feel unappreciated. Taking your employees out for a meal or a few drinks is a great way to say thank you. Rewarding your staff like this will make them feel as though you really care about them. This will build rapport and give you an excellent chance to get to know your staff, outside of work.

 

  • Disciplinary Action

 

Unlike rewards, disciplinary action should be taken against individuals only. It will hurt moral if you punish a whole group for one person’s mistake. Instead, take people aside in private, and deal with them in a personal manner.

When it comes to the severity of your discipline, you have to be reasonable. If you go over the top over something small, it will scare your other staff members. But, if you are too relaxed about something larger, your staff will start to walk all over you. It’s important to put policies in place to account for this so that you know how to act in any given situation.

 

  • What Will You Gain?

 

By taking steps like these, you’ll gain the trust and respect of your employees. The benefits of this can be astonishing. Your staff will work harder, and they will listen to you more. It will make it easier to roll out changes to your company, and even give your employees bad news. Ultimately, you and your staff will all be happier.

Hopefully, this will inspire you to start working on your company’s culture. These methods will make your company look better from the outside, and they could even boost your revenue. Do some research yourself, and decide what you want to do for your company. Every business is different, after all. And your staff will need different treatment.

A steamy shower not only gets rid of the dirt and dust from outside but can also clear sinuses and nasal passages. The same can method works by holding your head over a bowl of hot water and inhaling deeply. Just remember to put a towel over your head to create a tent, so that you can absorb all the steam.

It seems like every year is a big year for the gadget. But this year is apparently even bigger. The excitement began back in January when we saw some incredible products on show at CES. Now some of those products have made it to market, and we’re enjoying the results. The question now is which tech gifts are on everybody’s list this year as we approach the holiday season?

As always the competition is ramping up, and companies are trying to put their best foot forward. So in amongst all the noise, what are this year’s must-have gadgets for him and for her?

A few years back we all thought that Pebble would be the company to go up against the mighty Apple in this space. But it hasn’t worked out quite that way. Instead, we’ve seen the rise of another company, Fitbit, trying to get in on the act. Fitbit’s target market is the lower end of the market. Their objective is to make wearables accessible by all, including on price.

In 2016, their angle is fitness. They’re creating watches that monitor things like heart rate, distance travelled and calories burned. On top of that, the Fitbit devices also allow you to receive texts to your wrist at a glance. Whether people will like the relatively cheap build quality remains to be seen. But being just under £100/$123 can they complain?

A Replacement For Siri

Artificial intelligence is going to become big business. In fact, if people like Google’s Director of Engineering are to be believed, it’s going to transform life as we know it. Today AI is in a good place, and now we finally have a replacement for Siri, by Amazon of all people. Siri was first introduced over five years ago now. And when it came out, it was fun, but hopelessly brittle if you wanted to ask it anything complicated. Today’s AI is vastly more powerful, thanks mainly to all the data that’s been collected through the internet and other devices. Amazon has decided to bring this AI into the home. But instead of putting it on a phone or a watch, they’ve put it in a sort of standing speaker. It’s called the Amazon Echo, and it’s doing the rounds on TV advertising right now. It’s an elegant looking device that you can ask questions in natural language. On first impressions, it seems a little gimmicky. But the reviews so far have been overwhelmingly positive. Is this something that could really work?

You can ask you echo what the weather is going to be like tomorrow. You can also ask it what the traffic will be like on your way to work and to play your favourite music. And you do all this with just a voice command. The Echo also connected to smart devices in your home. If you happen to have smart lighting, you can ask echo to turn the lights off for you. No more having to dust off the Dorito crumbs from your chest, heave yourself off the couch and walk over to the switch.

The Echo comes in at around £150/$184.

Virtual Reality Headsets Just Went Viral

Virtual reality is another one of those technologies that remind us that we’re already living in the Star Trek universe. This year VR officially launched, with Google, Facebook, Samsung and HTC all getting in on the act. What’s more, consumers have got a big choice of what kind of VR headset they want. Do you want something that’ll just do the job? If so, the Samsung Gear VR will do the job at around £50/$62. Or do you want something where you can play the latest titles in high fidelity? If so, you might want to go for the Facebook’s Oculus Rift or the HTC Vive. Prices for these range between £450/$555 and £600/$740.

Be warned, though, these are the first iteration of VR products that we’ve seen. As such, they haven’t yet had time to mature into fully fledged, mature products. Expect glitches and problems. With that said, we’re living in exciting times. With VR, humans can for the first time live in virtual worlds with all the sights and sounds that accompany them.

It was only a handful of years ago when people boasted about binge watching their “box sets.” The DVD box set was the way that most of us consumed our favourite series and dramas. But with the march of technology, that’s all changed. New streaming business models have meant that we can binge watch our favourite content, all with the help of a simple stick that plugs into our TV. Amazon again is leading the charge. But there are other services like Now TV and even Chromecast that are competing in the space. Finally, we can escape the banality of regular TV and just get to the good stuff. The stuff that actually makes the technology work becomes a sideshow. Suddenly the main event is in the design of the speakers themselves and how appealing they are. This year, we’ve seen lots of funky designs, specifically targeting women. You can pick up a high-quality Bluetooth speaker for around £130.

A High-Tech Safety Net For Your Home

It was only a matter of time before the insides of our homes got their own security camera systems. If you’ve always loved the idea of monitoring your home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, you’ve got more choice than ever before. For instance, companies like Nest are releasing cameras that you can set up in your home that connect to your other devices. The principle is simple really. Plug the devices into the wall, connect them to your WiFi and then control them from your phone or computer. You can watch live streams of your home in real-time, get alerts if motion is detected and play alarms if you see an intruder. Even stranger, you can actually talk to intruders through speakers on Nest devices and politely ask them not to steal all your stuff.

Of course, the main benefit of these devices is for pet owners with needy pets. If you’ve got a pooch who just can’t stand to be without you, you can talk to them while you’re out at work. Hopefully, that’ll stop them from tearing up your house in distress.

Robots That Do The Chores

This year we saw a robot that had learned how to fold clothes. It was an impressive feat and showed just how much robot technology had improved. Giving a robot the level of dexterity needed to fold clothes was unthinkable in the past. But today it’s happening, and we’ll probably see consumer versions soon.  

Meanwhile, we’ll have to make do with less impressive, but still helpful robot vacuums. This year we’re likely to see more robot vacuums being bought as Christmas gifts. And why not? The iRobot from Roomba has a bunch of useful features designed to make domestic life more blissful. It comes with tech that helps it avoid falling down the stairs. And you can also programme it to do the cleaning while you’re out of the house. It’ll set you back a bit, though. These are selling for £650/$800 plus right now.

Roomba isn’t the only cleaning bot in town – contrary to popular opinion. There’s another robot that has been doing the rounds too. It’s called the Grillbot. And it’s makers claim that it will automatically clean your grill, like the iRobot, without you having to use any elbow grease. When you think about it, the Grillbot is a clever product. Most people can stomach vacuuming. It’s boring, but at least it isn’t difficult, especially if you go cordless. But there’s no way to make cleaning the grill easy. This year, we’re likely to see many happy people getting Grillbots and finally freeing them from the chore of scrubbing. It’s a gift for dads everywhere – and relatively cheap too. You can pick one of these up for around £55/$68.

Bluetooth Toothbrushes

What’s the purpose of a Bluetooth toothbrush, other than to turn your teeth blue? Nobody’s quite sure. But if you want a toothbrush that connects wirelessly to your other devices this year, Oral-B has made one.

Curvy TVs With Smart Tech

There’s a debate raging right now in the tech community concerning whether curved TVs are really worth it? Do they even make sense? Well, did Furbies make sense? Did Pokemon Go make sense? If you want to splash out on a curved TV, for the love of the fact that it’s curved, why not? It’s your holiday season.

There are more freelancers than ever in this modern world – which just adds to your problems. With so much competition, it has never been more important to stand out from the crowd than it is today.

With this in mind, I thought I would pull together some excellent tips for boosting your freelance prospects. Read on to find out more!

Develop a niche

First of all, think about developing a niche for yourself. There are hundreds of other freelancers in your area and field, all offering general business services to anyone. The result is that you are up against a lot of competition, and wasting a lot of time on wooing clients that just hire someone else. So, think about your skills and knowledge, and try to establish yourself in a niche instead. You will find you can target customers much more accurately, for a start. And, your speciality service will give you a wealth of opportunity you have never even considered.

Develop deeper relationships

As a freelancer, you will offer your clients a particular set of skills. But what if you could offer them more? There are two ways of doing this. First of all, reach out to complementary businesses in your field and start developing relationships with them. For example, let’s say you are a copywriter and your client needs some on-site SEO performed. If you know a reputable SEO freelancer, it’s a simple case of recommending them. Meanwhile, your SEO friend is recommending you for the copy on their client’s site.

Invest in new skills

The second idea is to learn those skills yourself. Find some suitable courses and develop your skill set over time, and you will have more to offer your clients. There are courses in any subject you can think of, from computer training to specialist products. Training Connection recommends face-to-face instruction, but there are other options. You might consider signing up for an online course or e-learning qualification, for example.

Focus on profit-making tasks

There is so much to do as a freelancer – without ever meeting a client or doing any paid work. Invoicing, accounts, marketing – the list is endless. The trouble is that the more time you spend on paperwork and admin, the less time you are out earning money. So, think about getting some help. A virtual assistant could help you complete all your basic admin duties – and will likely do it better, too. A bookkeeper can help you organize your taxes. And hiring another freelancer or agency can help you with your marketing. Of course, this costs money. But, if it enables you to earn more, it is always going to be worth it.

Are you stuck in a rut? Are you bored with doing the same things with the same people all the time? Or are you anxious that time is flying and you’re not getting making headway with your list of life goals? Sometimes, we all have days when we wonder if we could be doing more. Life is for living, after all. If this sounds familiar, it may be time for a fresh start. Here are some ways you can boost your mood and get motivated in the months ahead.

Is work getting you down?

Most of us have days when we’d much rather stay in bed than trek to the office or serve customers all day. Work isn’t supposed to be fun all the time. But you should take a degree of enjoyment out of it. If you’re bored of work, or it’s making your stressed, consider a change of environment or a new career. What do you want to do? If somebody asked you what your dream is, what would you say? If you have goals, try to make them happen. It might take a long time, but you can start taking baby steps. Perhaps you want to get into presenting, for example. If so, fire off some cover letters and CVs and find out about work experience opportunities. Look into internships or go back to college and take relevant courses.

Do you suffer from body confidence issues?

Body image is one of the most pressing concerns for young people today. If you suffer from body confidence issues, there may be ways you can increase your self-esteem. Firstly, think about why you lack confidence. Are you heavier than you’d like to be or do you struggle to put on weight? Changes to your diet and lifestyle can often have amazing benefits for your health and your self-confidence. If you want to lose weight, try to change what and how much you eat, and take up exercise. If you struggle with a sweet tooth, try using products like miracle berry. You can add tablets to your food to make it sweeter without increasing its calorie content. If you want to put on weight, ask your GP for advice. It may be as simple as eating more or including more calorific foods in your diet.

Are you craving a change of scenery?

Are you constantly looking at pictures of amazing places on Instagram and Facebook? If so, why not stop looking, and start doing. The world is your oyster, and there are so many places out there to explore and discover. Travelling can broaden your horizons and open new doors. If you dream of jetting off on an adventure, start saving up, and plan your trip. Seeing the world can give you a new lease of life and help you decide what you want to do in the future.

Sometimes, life can become stagnant. You reach a standstill, and it’s hard to get out of a rut. If you find yourself in this situation, it may be time to make changes.
