How Small Crafts Firms Can Improve Their Workshops

Pexels – CC0 License

Small ‘crafts’ firms are often some of the most inspiring and creative businesses out there, often responsible for bringing amazing creations to life based on nothing but the practicality and ingenious skills of their owners. Think of how incredible firms like the WETA Workshop in New Zealand have been creating prop weapons and movie props for some of the biggest blockbusters’ around, inspiring smaller firms for years, while small firms that create merchandise for larger businesses quite literally help brands spread and define their message through the products they sell or give away.

However, no matter what kind of craft you’re involved in, it’s worth considering how small crafts firms can improve their workshops in the best way. In this post, we’ll discuss a few tips for achieving that, with a mind for safety, productivity, and making those long-term investments that are sure to pay dividends as time moves on.

This way, you’re one step closer to competing with even the bigger enterprises in your field. With that in mind, please consider the following:

Professional Equipment

While it’s true that many artisan workshops will develop their own means of production that may provide their own unique twist on production, it doesn’t hurt to have those industry-standard methods, designed for essential utility, around should we need them. For instance, utilizing an industrial embroidery machine can quite literally aid any small textiles firm in producing at scale, developing prototypes of merchandise easily, and keeping up with the production trends of modern businesses. With a coherent strategy like that, the chance of success is increased.

Safety At All Times

Of course, any improvement in safety is an improvement overall. It’s unlikely that we need to explain why. It might be, then, that reinvesting in brand new safety equipment, new safety training, ensuring that you invest in third-party auditors to come and check your business more stringently than the health inspectors to ensure that government guidelines are not only met, but surpassed, all of this can not only improve employee satisfaction, but if we’re to talk selfishly, the chance that employees may need to take time off work, use your liability insurance, as well as the reputational knock that comes with injured staff. This all pales in comparison to the importance of actually preventing injury, of course, which transcends business in the first place.

Individual Spaces

It’s good to give your staff members autonomy in a workshop, so that they can work safely without bumping into others around the space, and so they can organize their work accordingly. Setting a desk and bench for each employee, giving them space and access to each machine, ensuring a queuing system is in place to allow staff to book certain time on certain utilities, and creating ample storage space with proper security and worthwhile lighting will all make a difference and improve organization, aiding the coherence of crafting within that environment.

With this advice, you’re certain to improve your workshop in the best possible sense.

7 Reasons Why You Should Prioritize Your Mental Health

7 Reasons Why You Should Prioritize Your Mental Health

One significant aspect of your overall health and well-being is your mental health. More people tend to focus more on their physical health, with statistics showing that about 61% of adults in the US spend more time on their physical health while 39% work on their mental health. According to health experts, mental health goes beyond managing your stress levels to acknowledging that your body and mind are connected in many ways. Poor mental health can also affect your physical well-being. Here are some important reasons you need to prioritize your mental health.

  1. Protects you from physical illness

As mentioned earlier, your mental well-being can significantly impact your physical health. Good mental health will show in your daily habits, such as what you eat, how you handle situations, etc., which will improve your health. When you prioritize your mental health, you’re less likely to feel overwhelmed or extremely stressed in situations, reducing your risk of experiencing health conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart diseases, and diabetes. Health experts also suggest that positive mental health can contribute to your quality of life and longevity.

  1. It helps you deal with negative habits

Sometimes, ignoring your mental health for a while may cause you to develop habits that may harm you and your health. Therefore, it’s best to prioritize your mental health to enable you to manage these habits or overcome them completely. It also helps minimize the risk of depression. There’s no harm in asking for help when you need it to help you deal with habits such as excessive alcohol intake. For instance, if you’re in or around the Texas area, you can find counseling services or centers to help you on your journey. You only need to get started by visiting https://www.sunshinebehavioralhealth.com/texas/beaumont-city/ to find all the information you need.

  1. Boosts your self-esteem

Your emotions, thoughts, and experiences shape how you view and feel about your health. Good mental health enhances your self-esteem because you have the right frame of mind and learn not to be too hard on yourself, even in challenging situations. As you work on your mental health, you grow more confident, learn to love yourself, and work on your weaknesses.

  1. It helps you think clearly

Prioritizing your mental health helps clear your mind and gives you the focus to concentrate on your daily tasks. Good mental health enables you to be more organized with your thoughts and feel less overwhelmed. Practices such as journaling, talking to someone, taking an early morning jog, stepping back from your busy schedule, etc., help you face your thoughts head-on and make sense of what you feel until you have the clarity to move on. It also helps encourage you to tackle any issues you may have been facing.

  1. Enhances your relationships

Making your mental health a priority also enhances the quality of your relationships. Instead of the potential isolation that may arise from mental health issues, you can have meaningful relationships with others, express yourself better, and understand what others go through when you prioritize your mental health. As a result, you have deeper bonds and can share experiences with others.

  1. It gives you a greater sense of calm

Mindful practices such as meditation, yoga, taking time off social media, etc., help boost your mental health and give you a sense of calmness even when there’s so much going on around you. It enhances your mental strength by helping you take a step back from your usual hustle and bustle, so you feel some inner peace. It also gives you greater control over how your body will usually respond to situations. This way, you can take a calmer approach to any issues that arise and help you feel relaxed even in stressful situations.

  1. Boosts your energy

When you prioritize your mental health, you feel more energized. Good mental health gives you a positive outlook on daily situations. As a result, you’re motivated to keep going instead of feeling sluggish, exhausted, or giving up. Your mind is healthy, and your mental resources are constantly renewed, improving your mood and energy levels.

Aside from identifying the need to prioritize your mental health, you also need to take some practical steps to make it a reality. These include developing healthy sleep habits, spending quality time with nature and loved ones, practicing mindfulness, regular exercise, and eating healthily. Doing these will give you a healthy mental state and yield positive results in every other aspect of your life.

Should You Consider Buying a Business Instead of Growing One Yourself?

Growing a business is an extremely time-consuming and difficult task that can take several months if not years. In fact, for a business to start and grow to a profitable level within a few months is an incredible feat that won’t happen often. However, there is another option that you can rely on if you’re looking to start your own business; buying a company.

Buying a business comes with many great benefits, so we’ll be explaining the majority of them in this article and giving you a better understanding of why it’s done.

Source: https://unsplash.com/photos/8YG31Xn4dSw (CC0)

You’ll have a business that is already somewhat established

One of the top reasons why people buy businesses is because they’re already somewhat established. Instead of trying to come up with a unique idea that may or may not work, you can look for small business brokers that have listed businesses with working ideas that are already generating profits. By adding your expertise and connections to these businesses, you can improve on what’s already there and transform it into a profit-generating company.

Employees will already have the knowledge and expertise to run the company

When you buy a business, it typically comes with all of the employees that worked for it. While some of them might be reluctant to work for someone new, they’re going to have all of the expertise and knowledge you need to ensure that the business runs smoothly. This is why you should do whatever you can to keep those staff in the company.

There should be a reliable source of income already

Generating profit while running a small business is incredibly challenging. Most small businesses will take years of paying off debts before they can actually reach a sustainable level of profit. However, if you’re buying a business, then it means you can actually secure a reliable source of income sooner than you think.

However, there are downsides that you should consider too

Just don’t forget that there are a few downsides to buying a business.

  • A large investment is needed for buying a business. It’s not going to be cheap because not only are you paying for the business itself, but you’ll also be paying for all of the services it uses and the staff it employs.
  • You also need working capital to ensure that the business can continue running. While it might be generating a decent amount of profit, you still need money for things like buying stock and paying for services.
  • You inherit outstanding contracts, meaning you’ll have to understand the position that the business was in before you took over and fulfill those outstanding contracts in the previous manager’s place.
  • Don’t forget that there’s likely a reason why the business is being sold. Perhaps the industry isn’t as popular as it was before, or maybe there are problems with the retail store that aren’t being revealed yet. Always be cautious when buying a business.

Hopefully, this article has given you some things to consider before you decide to grow or buy a business.

Don’t Settle For Less: Find Your Ideal Career

Don’t Settle For Less: Find Your Ideal Career

Not many jump at the idea of working from a nine to five desk job that pays minimum wage with little to no benefits. Unfortunately, for many people, this is their reality.

To many, even having sufficient funds doesn’t cover basic necessities, home repair (e.g., Boulder window, foundation repair, roof repair, etc.), or other additional expenses.

In It For What?

In other words, why do you want to pursue your career? Is it money, fame, power, impact, or goals?

For many, a successful life encompasses a fancy car, expensive shoes, shiny rocks, and endless amounts of money to spend. However, successful life is about service, family, or adventure for others. Whichever your dreams are regarding your career path, you must know why you want to pursue it.

No amount of money can diminish your desire to find passion in an ideal career.

As a matter of fact, a study resurfaced in various newspapers that happiness is at its peak once a person hits a 75,000 salary. Anything higher than that amount won’t bring you the joy you crave.

Earning a good wage is vital for anyone’s quality of life, but as Nobel laureate recipient Angus Deaton found, money doesn’t necessarily buy happiness. So, be careful of choosing a career merely for the zeros in the salary.

How Far Are You Willing To Go?

Successful careers can be gratifying, but sometimes the price may be too high to pay. For example, say you’re the type to want to wander the world but get easily homesick or fear leaving your family.

Then, becoming a diplomat in a foreign country may not be the wisest choice.

What if you dislike interacting and working with teams to accomplish projects? Then, training to be a management consultant will prove to be complicated.

Picture by Werner Heiber on Pixabay

Commitment is also a significant factor to consider before settling on a career. Once again, if you enjoy spending significant time at home with your loved ones, you’ll narrow down your choices to fit your needs.

Some jobs require a commitment to training and rigorous study (e.g., neurosurgeon, lawyer, political scientist, analyst, physicist, etc.).

Another thing to factor to consider is its impact. Think about what sort of impact will this career have in your life. Some jobs are more stressful than others, while a few require extensive hours of dedication and hard work.

When In Doubt Try & Fail

Not sure if a particular job is for you? Give it a try!

College students feel the pressure of declaring a major. Approximately eighty per cent of college students change their majors. Certainly, stressing about questioning career paths in college is entirely normal.

Picture by Arek Socha on Pixabay

Study in college, earn an online degree, learn any skills online, or develop your own business, but start somewhere. Nothing is more frustrating than having the passion for something you never gave yourself the chance to try.

Growth is about doubting. Discover what interests you. Challenge what you know and question if you’re happy working in your chosen career.

It’s Never Too Late

How old are you? If a digit number is the only thing holding you back, you’ll learn that age is a state of mind with time. Some of the most successful individuals have failed during their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

Picture by Gerd Altmann on Pixabay

An ideal career may be many. Some people become writers, philosophers, professors, and entrepreneurs in a single lifetime. Look at Mae Carol Jemison’s life. She became the first African American woman in space. Not only was she a NASA astronaut, but she was also an engineer, physicist and conducted various experiments.

Jemison never settled. She began writing autobiographies inspiring thousands of others to reach for the stars. Why should you settle for anything less?

The Activities Whistler Offers That Embrace the Rain

When it’s raining, often you can’t do very much because many activities rely on being outside. Whistler, BC however isn’t one of these, though, because there are activities that you can still enjoy when it is raining. We don’t mean white water rafting necessarily, when you would hardly notice because of how wet you will get anyway, but non-water activities.

In this article, we will take a look at what you might describe as Whistler Rain activities. These are primarily indoor activities, although an activity such as bungee jumping is possible still, no matter how bad the weather. It depends how much you are thinking about the view when you take that leap of faith towards the river.

Brewery Visit

There is a brewery at Whistler that you can visit and taste beer at. This can take place on a rainy day when it is not much fun outside. This is also perfect for other events such as a bachelor party.

The brewery at Whistler will allow you to enjoy craft beer. Anyone into specialty beers and different beers from around the world will consider this heaven on Earth.

Why not explore the Canadian Craft Whistle Brewery Tour? This will take care of a few hours and be a pleasurable experience, that will seem more educational to talk about when you get back home, yet will still have provided you with a great day out accompanied with the taste of beer.

If you enjoy brewery visits back home, then this will be another one to tick off your list. Otherwise, it can be a different experience, that combines a love of beer with some history of the drink. If you like beer, it is enjoyable to sample different kinds and compare their tastes. There is a lot of science behind brewing a good beer.

Escape Room

To escape outside, Whistler can offer a room where lots of dry activities can take place. Okay, they may require brainpower, but then so would a pub quiz back home, in keeping with the thought of beer above.

In all, there are four different types of adventures that you can go on in groups of between two and six people. This means that when you have a larger group, you can split into smaller groups and enjoy activities with fewer people. Sometimes, otherwise, you can find a group too large to have fun and interact with everyone.

When you sign up for this activity, it will become clear just what escape rooms are all about. You will have to solve clues to escape each room within a 45-minute time frame. The clues might be in the form of riddles or puzzles. Either way, it is your task, within your group, to solve them. This makes it important to mix your teams up, in terms of intelligence or depending on how they think, whether that be in a logical way or not. This will be easier when you know the people you’re with well.

With escape rooms on offer at Whistler, we can escape from what we are used to and start relaxing within our friendship or family group that we choose to take away with us. Solving clues can be fun.

Indoor Ice Experience

Why not take your interest in snow or ice indoors. You can, for instance, enjoy skating on the indoor ice rink. Skates are there to be rented, or you could bring your own that you are used to. Canadians lover skating, and you could join them in that at Whistler.

There is more than one rink at Whistler, so you should find space to skate. This is whether you head for Whistler Olympic Plaza or the Meadow Park Sports Centre.

Figure skating or ice hockey can be played on the ice rinks at Whistler.

You do not need to get wet if you do not want to when Whistler allows you to carry on enjoying yourself indoors in your party group. If you are not partaking in the above activities, then you could always make your way to Dusty’s Bar and Grill. There is nothing like a good steak and the drinks that can accompany it.

Keeping Fleet Management Costs Low

Businesses have faced unprecedented times and if we’re going to survive into the future, then more aggressive and vigilant attention has to be paid to financial management and ultimately cash flow.

It’s quite a tightrope at the best of times because while you want to ensure operational efficiency, you also can’t be too tight-fisted, or your operating capital will dry up.

One of the biggest areas the medium-sized businesses have to keep a tight lid on is minimizing the costs of fleet management and logistics. Often, these two important parts of any business go hand in hand, and that’s where it can get a little confusing.

But concentrating on at least one element of your logistics operations, fleet management, can save you big time in the short and long term.

We’re going to help you discover how.

Now, there are several elements that all businesses need to consider when wanting to be successful and remain competitive, but the one that is probably the most important is keeping an eye on your finances. If you’re in the business of selling products that form part of a supply chain along the logistics line, then fleet management is going to be one of your top priorities.

While many companies choose to outsource this function, for some it makes more sense to keep these parts of the business in-house. Usually, this happens when you need more direct control over delivery times and collections, or when you’re selling your products across vast distances and need to retain greater control over the quality or cold storage, for example. One resource that can really help in this regard is using Fleet Management Software, which can help drivers, dispatchers, and fleet managers keep control of operations in real time.

But without getting too technical, as each business will have different requirements, in a broad sense; keeping an eye on technological advances that monitor driving styles, distances and frequencies is one way to start getting a thorough grip on your fleet expenses. Other ways include:

  • Modifying your driving habits: Inspire responsibly and speed-conscious driving by your drivers. Driving courses that teach your drivers how to accelerate properly and take on hills and steep drives all add up over time.
  • Manage the weight and size of deliveries vs your vehicle capacity: big loads equal big vehicles. It couldn’t be more simple than that. So many resources are wasted by sending unnecessarily large trucks to deliver small loads – and vice versa. Sending a small truck to deliver a big heavy load is going to place unnecessary strain on the vehicle’s capabilities and could lead to expensive damage besides.
  • Keep up to date on vehicle maintenance: never exceed the recommended service or maintenance schedules and always have your vehicles maintained by properly accredited and qualified service centers.
  • Select the appropriate fleet: If you don’t mean to own your vehicles outright (and even if you do), do some research to determine what kind of fleet makes the most sense for your business. For example, if you provide towing or rescue services in rural areas, you’ll want the appropriate vehicle for the terrain. You’ll also want to make sure that each of your vehicles contains the correct information for your drivers if they in turn need some rescuing.

Ford provides an amazing range of trucks and pick-ups that can be easily modified for small to medium-sized businesses, so check them out. Also, make sure that your Ford fleet has access to Ford factory shop manuals, just in case.

We can’t cover all of the elements that effective fleet management requires in this post, but this guide should give you a solid base from where to start.

10 Attributes Every Small Business Needs In Order To Succeed

Running a successful business is not an easy task. Many different factors can stop a business from thriving; however, there are also several traits which many businesses have in common when they are doing well. These include creativity, planning, and excellent customer service, amongst other things.

Photo by Cristina Gottardi on Unsplash

Certain attributes specific to small businesses make them more likely to succeed than large corporations.

These Attributes Include:

A Clear Vision and Mission

A clear vision and mission are essential for any business, but it’s especially important for small businesses. When you have a clear vision and mission, it gives your business purpose and direction. It also helps you stay focused on your goals and keeps you accountable.

Strong Leadership

Leadership is key to the success of any business. If you don’t have a strong leader at the helm, your business will likely fail. A good leader knows where they want their business to go and has a direction for the future. A good leader also knows how to inspire and motivate their employees, customers, suppliers, etc.

Networking & Collaboration

Collaborating with other businesses is an excellent way to increase the likelihood of your business’s success. When you network and collaborate with other businesses, it gives your business opportunities that it wouldn’t normally have access to on its own.

This increases your potential customer base, gives you new ideas for products or services, and provides information about industries relevant to yours or even joint ventures (or mergers) with like-minded companies. The possibilities are endless when two (or more) businesses come together for mutual benefit!

Adaptability

In order to be successful, a small business must be adaptable. The business world is constantly changing and evolving, and if your business can’t keep up, it will quickly become irrelevant. On the other hand, an adaptable small business can change, respond to customer demands, and stay ahead of the competition.

The Team Ethic

Smaller businesses usually have fewer employees than larger ones which means that everyone has to work closely together in order for the company to run smoothly. This close-knit working environment encourages teamwork and makes it easier to share ideas throughout the organization.

Independence

When the day-to-day running of a small business is down to the owner, they are more likely to take greater responsibility for their company’s success. As a result, they will be more invested in making their business a success and less likely to give up when things get tough.

Customer Focus

Small businesses often have a personal relationship with their customers, which can result in a loyal following. In order to maintain this relationship, small businesses need to visit website like this, be responsive to customer feedback and provide excellent customer service.

Agility

Small businesses can often react quickly to changes in the market as they generally do not have the same level of bureaucracy as larger companies. This agility can help them stay ahead of the competition and increase their success.

Passion

Passion is a key ingredient for any business, and it is especially important for small businesses. The company owner needs to be passionate about their product or service as this will be infectious and encourage employees and customers alike to feel enthusiastic about the company.

Personal Investment

As mentioned earlier, when the owner of a small business is personally invested in its success, they are more likely to do whatever it takes to make their business a success. This can include making sacrifices such as working long hours and foregoing a salary.

While not every small business will have all of these attributes, those that do are more likely to be successful in the long run. Therefore, if you are thinking of starting your own business, it is important to keep these attributes in mind.

5 Tips for Keeping Good Oral Hygiene while Traveling

The summer and wintertime are the two biggest times of the year where everyone is out traveling. Whether it’s visiting family, going on vacation, or celebrating holidays in a fun way. Regardless of what your travel plans are, one thing that you cannot neglect no matter where you’re at in the world would be your oral hygiene. Traveling tends to mean that people let their health slack off a bit. This can include not brushing your teeth enough, eating more junk food than usual, less sleep, consuming alcohol, and moving around a lot less. Oral health is what tends to be neglected the most! These tips will help you stay on top of your oral hygiene when traveling.

Keep a close eye on your toothbrush

Believe it or not, your toothbrush needs to have some ventilation. Most of those toothbrush holders that people pack when traveling tend to not have air holes. Your toothbrush will stay moist which can grow bacteria such as mold. If your toothbrush needs to be enclosed, try to keep it in a larger container, and maybe even leave it out on the counter when not in use. Having to throw out your toothbrush because it smells bad or looks molded is not a good way to start a vacation.

Look at what your mouth needs before traveling

If you’re having to travel, it’s best to try to take care of some things before traveling, especially if you think you’ll be gone for a while. If you’ve been looking into getting full-mouth dental implants, then it’s best to jump-start this far in advance before your big adventure. But this can go for anything dental or health-related really. You want to make sure you feel like you’re in tip-top shape before exploring the world.

Think about the way you sleep

Did you know the way you sleep can affect your dental hygiene? This can include snoring causing problems and even teeth grinding in your sleep. It’s best to just lay on your back and sleep like that if you can. If you’re picky about how you sleep, then you can always try bringing your own pillow.

Cut down on sugar

When it comes to trips, it’s always tempting to just want to eat and drink whatever you like. It’s completely understandable too. Having the opportunity to travel means you’re getting to try new things, eat foods you usually don’t have the chance to do, and just allow yourself to indulge in the finer things in life in general.

This is all fine, but you should try to cut down on it a bit. Junk food, alcohol, basically, those unhealthy things are okay as long as it’s in moderation. Sugar-loaded treats do a lot of harm to your teeth, gums, not to mention your immune system too. So if you want to avoid tooth decay, just consume these things in moderation.

Drink healthy

If all possible, look into drinking things that are good for your health and teeth. As stated above, sugar can be harmful to your teeth and immune system. So try to drink water, green tea, and avoid drinks that will state your teeth such as coffee. You can even look into getting a teeth whitening kit to help you out.
