Five Tips for Upskilling as a Modern Employee

It’s easy to become stagnated in a job. Spending years of your life performing the same routine, daily tasks, and activities can be unsatisfying, particularly if you don’t like your job. However, the security of steady pay and the fear that you wouldn’t excel in another role might hold you back from trying something new.

The reality that faces us is that technology is improving at a rapid pace. Industries are changing overnight, and some are being made obsolete in the blink of an eye. Many jobs traditionally carried out by people are now being automated. Certain roles are permanently changing, and the need for human interference is lowering significantly.

Modern workers need to be adaptable. The focus should switch from being currently employed to being employable in the long term. While robots won’t take your job tomorrow morning and technology isn’t moving so fast that you can’t keep up, it’s important to improve your skillset and productivity.

Upskilling is a crucial aspect of being a successful modern employee. Not only does it benefit your ability to carry out tasks, but it is also valued significantly by employers.

Whether you’re looking to climb the ladder in your current workplace or you want to develop your skillset for something new, here are five tips for upskilling as a modern employee.

  1. Study your industry

By expanding your knowledge of an industry, you become more useful and versatile to an organization. In-depth knowledge is hard to come by, so by studying the industry that you work in, you are setting yourself apart from the competition.

Follow industry news, read books, subscribe to magazines, participate in webinars, and listen to podcasts to stay up to date on the industry latest.

  1. Take an online course

There is an abundance of useful information available for free online. There are also a number of paid courses that can provide in-depth knowledge and expertise to help you increase your skill base.

Sources such as Udemy, Coursera, and iTunes U have many free courses across a range of industries.

  1. Ask your employer to sponsor you

In many cases, a company will pay for their staff to upskill. It is more beneficial for them to train their current employees rather than hire several new workers.

If you feel that you and your employer would benefit from your upskilling, approach them about sponsoring training or a course. If you get the go-ahead, this could lead to promotions and an improved salary down the line.

  1. Considering a change of industry?

If you’re tired of the field that you work in, a total career change is always an option. However, it’s important to note that you may need to upskill or gain certain qualifications to be eligible for a different job. For example, if you’re looking for warehouse jobs, you may need to obtain a forklift or machinery license.

  1. Build an online resume

As a modern employee, you must embrace the digital age. That means creating a digital resume and an online portfolio. Set up a LinkedIn profile and register for online job websites. This not only modernizes your approach, but it opens up endless opportunities for work all over the world.
