The relationship that many of us have to the concept of adulthood can be kind of strange. Previous generations had very clear lines in terms of what constituted the move into adult life. They would leave education, head into work, buy a house, get married, and that was basically what was expected of them. Younger generations have moved away from those expectations and it’s now much easier for people to carve out their own sense of who they are and who they want to be. However, that’s also come with the downside of often leaving a lot of people unsure of how to navigate the complexities of adult life. A lot of people in the modern era end up feeling like they’re no longer kids but they’re not exactly grown-ups either. This can end up causing a whole lot of stress and difficulty in many people’s lives as well as potentially impacting everything from their mental health to their relationships. With that in mind, here are some things in your life that you need to start taking control of if you really want to grow up.

Your car

One of the most common things that leaves a lot of people feeling like they don’t know how to be a “real adult” is that they often have no idea how many of the things in their life actually work, choosing instead to just put it in the hands of someone else. There is no better example of this than your car. If you’re constantly in a position where you’re having to call your parents to give you advice on what to do with your car or you have no idea what a mechanic is saying to you, it’s time to get educated. Money is a serious cause of stress for just about everyone. That’s just the nature of the society we live in. If you want to do anything, you’re going to need the money for it. However, if you’re not keeping track of your finances in a clear and consistent way then you’re setting yourself up for a whole lot more stress and anxiety than you really need. Keeping a budget isn’t that complicated, it just requires a decent degree of dedication. The same goes for monitoring your spending and trying to put some money away in a savings account.

Your communication

One of the main signs that someone is struggling to really act like an adult is that they are unable to communicate with the people around them. If you really want to feel like a grown up then the first step is being able to express yourself clearly to the people around you and be honest with them. Hiding your emotions or letting them out in aggressive outbursts are the behaviours of children, not responsible adults.

Of course, one of the most important things to remember is that there really isn’t anyone out there who’s going to define what “adulthood” means for you or for anyone else. Sure, the things in this list are great starts to help you begin to feel more like you have a sense of control over your adult life. However, if you really want to figure out what being an adult means to you, that’s something you have to come to on your own. That can be a pretty scary prospect but that’s the trade-off for the freedom that comes with it. And it’s a trade that many would gladly make.

Getting Started With Gantt Charts

Before any new project begins, it is critical to have some sort of roadmap in place. There are many different charts and graphs you can use to illustrate the key steps that need to be taken, and one of this is the Gannt chart. Gantt charts are often taught about in project management training courses, as they can play a critical role in managing your team. With that being said, read on to discover everything you need to know about them.

So, let’s begin by taking a look at what Gannt charts actually are. They were developed in the 1910s by Henry Gantt, and thus you can see where the name comes from. They give you the ability to visualise the project from the beginning to the end. A Gantt chart is an important type of productivity tool, which reads from top to bottom and right to left. The running length of the y-axis is tasks. Their order is irrelevant, and most people tend to go for chronological order. The x-axis is time. So, this covers what the task is and how long it will take. But, the third component of a task is who is going to do it. This is revealed by a colour-coded system, indicating what business department or person is responsible for getting the task in question done.

How do you get started with Gantt charts?

  1.    Choose a template – The first step is to select a template. Of course, you do have the option of building one from scratch, although this is not always necessary. Most templates come via project management software, or you can find them on the Internet. Once you have a suitable template, you can reuse it for every project.
  2.    Make your milestones – Now that you have a template ready, you need to add your milestones. What is a milestone? This is a marker that indicates that a section of the project is complete. For example, locking down the wireframes is usually a milestone when it comes to website creation. It is a good idea to plot all milestones before you move onto the next phase.
  3.    Add tasks, events, and generate dependencies – Now that you have followed the information above, you need to create dependencies, and also add tasks and sequence events. Talk to the individuals that are going to complete the task to get a proper understanding of how long there are going to take. When it comes to sequencing events, remember, you can schedule multiple events to be finalised at the same time, so long as they are not carried out by the same individual. Finally, once you have put the tasks on the chart, as well as the sequence, you need to create dependencies. You need to be very careful about plotting what tasks are dependent on others. If you get something wrong, it can cause issues later down the line.
  4.    Collaborate – Last but not least, it is important to collaborate with everyone on your team if your Gantt chart is to be a success. This is where workflow consulting can help. Everyone working on the project in question needs to have the ability to view the chart. They should also update their progress too, as it can help other assignees if a task is completed before the scheduled deadline.

Keep things comfortable:

Most people don’t automatically think that comfort and safety go together, but it’s important to understand that for example if your employees have to work outdoors, for example on a building site and they’re working during winter or when conditions are particularly harsh, or even if they’re working in the middle of summer then the temperatures and the environment in which they are working depending on what they have to wear can make them less or more comfortable, so for example if it’s very cold outside then you may want to consider renting a generator so that you can perhaps keep things a bit warmer for them as this will enable them to not focus so much on being cold, but be able to focus entirely on their work which will in turn impact their safety.

Analyze the working environment:

Every working environment is going to be different, so for example you may have an office where employees work for you and their safety is just as important as someone who works on a building site, although the things that you need to have in place to ensure their safety are going to be different, so for example, you could be responsible for ensuring that all computer screens are at the optimum height, at the right brightness, and that all desks and chairs are suitable for people so that they don’t suffer any kinds of headaches or repetitive strain injury.

Have regulations in place:

All employers are required to have health and safety regulations in place that they have to follow so it’s important that you have these and that you make sure that everyone is on board, understands them and is following them, so you should have them for example, printed out in common areas and also they should be part of the on boarding process when you hire new people.

Perform regular reviews:

Keeping up-to-date with your health and safety regulations is key as is making sure that your employees also feel safe and protected when at work, so performing things like regular reviews, checking things over, checking equipment and making sure that everything is functioning as it should be and also asking people how they feel working there.

What Not To Do When Buying A First Home

There are so many potholes to swerve when buying a first home, which is why rather than a generic ‘What to do when buying your first home’ post here’s the what not to do’s. From using the advice below, you can expect to retain some of your money, time and sanity during the first home buying process.

Listen To Advice

Just to be clear, this title refers to listening to advice from those who have no idea about what owning a home entails. So if your friend Jack, who still lives with his mom reckons he has a few opinions about what your priorities be when buying a home, just ask Jack to write it all down for you, and then put it in the bin. Get your real estate advice from people who work with houses, such as real estate inspection professionals, people who own their own property or people who work in the real estate sector.

Think Bigger Is Better

It’s almost certainly not when houses are concerned. You might be thinking ‘hey, the lender tells me I can afford to buy this 5 bedroom house, awesome!’, even though you’re single, and will be cohabitating with your pet goldfish Lucky, and will never ever use even half of those rooms. This isn’t a good idea in anyone’s eyes surely, unless you are unreasonably rich of course. Houses are expensive, but not just to buy, to keep, to fix, to maintain, it’s a never-ending cycle, so where possible, opt for less house, less mortgage, less work and you will get less stress.

Rely On The Lender

Banks to an extent take an interest in your finances in so far as they want to establish what you can afford, comfortably. So if you have a house in mind to apply for, they will also demonstrate the eventuality of interest rates rising, and assess if you have the freedom in your budget to accommodate to this change and maintain the mortgage payments. Which is reasonable. But, some lenders, may suggest that due to your earnings, and based on their findings while assessing your finances, that you could, in fact, afford a bigger home. This is a wow moment for most people, but it’s a trap! A large family home means a bigger mortgage, and a bigger mortgage means more interest to repay. Therefore if you’re already settled on a home that’s big enough, avoid deviating from this plan and buy the home you intended to.

Reserve On A Whim

This is obvious, yet, people still have their houses repossessed because they can’t keep up with the payments. And some people will happily commit to a home they can’t afford at the moment, but hope to rack up the deposit requested in a short amount of time. Buying a home is black and white where numbers are concerned. You work out the deposit (and other home buying costs) you need to buy the house, if you don’t have it, you can’t reserve it, it’s as simple as that!

To save failing at buying your first home, choose a home that’s practical and affordable, check the house is worth its price, only reserve a home when you have the savings to cover all of the costs and avoid the temptation to keep upping your budget. Stay strong and logical when buying your home, and you’ll thank yourself for it later on.

Cars are an asset to the modern way of life. They get us around faster than anything that’s come before them, and they keep us comfortable whilst they’re at it. They can be expensive to own and maintain, of course, but knowing how to drive is a life skill, and owning a car is a great investment.

Social media has a lot to offer. Of course, the terms and conditions are going to vary depending on where you are in the word, but there are some general rules you can follow: be sure to present the right papers and legal deeds, to prove you do own the car and can sell it, and that the vehicle itself has been recently serviced to prove it’s in working condition.
