While The Kids Are Away, The Parents Will Play…

Pixabay

Once you become a parent, your life becomes entirely focused on your kids. This isn’t a bad thing, of course, as kids can bring us plenty of joy and happiness. But there will be some times when you wish that you had a bit more time to yourself to do all the stuff you used to do before the little ones arrived on the scene.

So, there really is no wonder that most parents jump at the chance of some time to themselves when their kids go away. Whether they are just away for one night at a friend’s slumber party or for a week or so at summer camp, it’s really worth jumping on this chance to do your own thing for a few days.

Feeling a bit lost with all of this spare time you now have? Here are some great ideas of things that you and your partner might want to get up to – they range from practical things that you might have meant to do for some time to fun things that you wouldn’t normally get the chance to do with the kids in tow!

Pixabay

Sort Out Your Taxes

There’s no denying that things can get very hectic when you have to balance your work life and looking after the kids. There can be hardly any time to grab a quick cup of coffee as you browse the day’s headlines in the newspaper! So, how on earth are you ever going to find the time to get your taxes in order? Instead of letting all of your filing build up until it becomes a big rush right before the deadline, it’s a good idea to sort out your paperwork on days you don’t have the kids. Even if that means doing a little bit at odd times throughout the year, it will still cut down on how much work you have to do right before the final filing deadline!

Kickstart Your Job Hunt

Have you been thinking about looking for a better job lately? Maybe one that can offer you more responsibility and a better wage, or perhaps just one that will give you more free time with the kids? No matter how desperate you are to find a new job, you might find that the search is almost impossible when you have to spend so much time taking care of the kids. So, now that they aren’t around, you will easily be able to dedicate a couple of hours to your job hunt. Even if you aren’t particularly interested in finding a new job right now, you might find it very useful to use all of this new spare time to update your resume so that it is good to go when you are ready.

Conquer The Clutter

Kids left the house in a complete mess? No problem – you’ll have plenty of time to get everything back in order while they are away for a few days! Take a look through all of your belongings and think about which ones you could do without. You might want to consider taking these to a charity shop or recycling them. Now is also a great time to do some deep cleaning in those problem areas like your kitchen and bathroom. It’s worth taking as much as possible out of these rooms and really getting into every nook and cranny to remove any dirt and grime. It’s a great idea to get all of this clean before the kids get back as you will be able to use some really strong cleaning products without worrying about harming your children.

Pixabay

Take Advantage Of The TV

Do you never get to watch anything because your kids are always hogging the TV? Well, now is your chance to lie back on the sofa and indulge in whatever it is you’ve been missing out on! You might even want to treat yourself to a new Netflix or Amazon Prime package so that you have more shows and movies to choose from. It’s worth taking a look at Suddenlink for more ideas of the different internet and streaming packages you can treat yourself to. Seeing as the kids won’t be around, you can binge watch all the shows and movies that aren’t suitable for young eyes!

Pixabay

Go To The Movies

But why stay in when you don’t have the kids to look after? You don’t even have to go to all the bother of trying to find a babysitter. So, it’s the perfect chance to have a movie night with your partner. Why not turn it into a nice little date night and for a meal and drinks before or after the film? No matter what your taste in movies is, I’m sure you will be able to find one to suit you. There’s always a wide range of Hollywood blockbusters and smaller, independent productions out in the cinema.

Pixabay

Finish Your Book

Another thing that some parents regularly complain about is that they never get much chance to finish a book that they start reading. It can be quite easy to make time for reading if you are really dedicated – one option you have is to take a book to bed with you and read it before you turn the lights out, for example. But now that the kids are away for a couple of days, you will have plenty of time to get stuck into a good book throughout the day and evening. Once you get back from the office, you can make yourself a cup of tea and snuggle under a blanket on the sofa with that book that you’ve been trying to finish for ages.

Pixabay

Cook Your Favorite Meals

We all know just how picky some kids can be. Whether they are pushing their broccoli away or screwing up their face at the sight of mushrooms, there are a whole load of different foods that some kids won’t touch, no matter how hard you try to persuade them. Do you find that your picky kids mean that you have to restrict the meals and dishes that you cook and serve up for mealtimes? Well, if that is the case, then you will be very happy while the kids are away as you will be able to cook whatever you and your partner want! You’ll be able to add a lot more spice to dishes and you will also be able to be exotic when it comes to your ingredient choices. After all, you won’t have any pick taste buds turning their noses up at your food!

Give Something Back

It’s always good to give something back to society and your local neighborhood, especially if they have really helped you out previously when you were going through a difficult period. And there is no better way to give something back than by volunteering and getting stuck in with a local good cause. Some parents would love to do this more but they just don’t get the chance to with all of their responsibilities back at home. But now that you no longer have to worry about looking after the kids for a few days, you can think about spending a few hours volunteering with a charity of your choice. You might even like the idea of holding your very own fundraising event to try and raise as much cash as possible for a charity of good cause.

Pixabay

Connect With Loved Ones

When we are busy we also forget to keep in touch with our nearest and dearest. Even if we don’t forget, it can be pretty tricky trying to find the time to pick up the phone or write someone a quick email. It’s really worth thinking about who you haven’t been in touch with for a while and righting that wrong now that you don’t have the kids to distract you. Just think of how long you could spend on the phone to one of your besties who you haven’t spoken to for a few months – I’m sure that you will have loads of stuff to catch up on! This free time also gives you a chance to clear out your work inbox. Are there a few people who you should have replied to by now? Well, now is your chance to do that! And it also gives you a chance to clear out any junk and spam from your inbox. By the time the kids get back, your inbox should be at zero emails.

Pixabay

Rekindle Romance

It can be difficult to keep the spark in your relationship alive when you have to focus on the kids. Now that the kids aren’t around for a few days, you can work on rekindling your romance with your partner. All it’ll take is a couple of date nights and cozy evenings snuggled up on the sofa.

Hopefully, this long list will keep you occupied while you don’t have any kids to look after! You might enjoy this spare time so much that you start to send them away more often!

5 Fun Furniture Finds For Your Family Room

Family rooms are often the heart of the home when you have small children. It’s a great space to gather and watch a movie together. It’s also the perfect place to play games and spend quality time with a family. Kids love snuggling with mom and dad to read a book. This has to be the most comfortable room in the house so that you can ease into an afternoon with the children without getting achy. So what’s the best furniture to buy for a room like this?

Big is better?

While seating is important, sometimes what you really need is a little versatility in the room. When the kids want to hang out with you, they want to feel comfy and cozy. That’s not always easy on an expensive settee or sofa.

You might find a set of bean bags keeps things a little less formal. They’re great because they’re so portable. You can move them closer together, or push them away to another part of the room. Of course, a bean bag sofa means you can all hop on and enjoy an afternoon cuddle. Perfect for some quality family time.

Recline In Style

If you use your family room for movie marathons, you might prefer a totally immersive experience. Leather recliners can come with speakers, much like the high-end gaming chairs. Electric recliners allow you to find that perfect point of recline to keep you comfortable throughout the entire movie. Some even have a rocker frame so you can gently bounce yourself to a whole new level of relaxation. There aren’t nearly as many color options as bean bags might offer so matching to your decor choices might be more tricky. Still, with a sofa or armchair offering this level of deep comfort, a few shades astray won’t matter too much.

What’s on your coffee table? Picture source

Coffee Table Puzzles

Coffee tables are enormously useful in the family room. They provide the perfect perch for your pitchers, a stylish sill for your snacks, and a resting rostrum for your remotes. The best type of table for this space is one that includes plenty of storage options. Extra drawers give you perfect little cubbies to hide away candies, magazines, games and puzzles. Why not swap board games out every week so the kids can discover something new each time?

Cable Tidy

If you’re not too keen to wall-mount your TV, it might be worth finding a cabinet or TV stand that includes a cable tidy. These often run down the center of any stand. You can carefully tuck each cable inside, feeding it up toward the TV. At the bottom, they can then be fed toward the next device or the power sockets. It gives a great impression that the whole entertainment center is wireless plus you can have much more fun without the hazards of cables in the room.

Toy Chest

These come in so many designs that you might want one for each of your children! Pirates, princesses, animals and character themes make these big boxes lots of fun to play with. Of course, their primary purpose is to house all of the toys that come out at the weekend. What goes into yours?

Shhhh! The Practical Path To A Peaceful Home

Pixabay Image

Our senses play a massive part in our lives. Smells have the ability to relax us and transform our moods, while sight can either stimulate or calm us. But, a sense which gets less attention is our hearing. Too often, we forget how much what we hear impacts our moods. But, sounds can have as much of an effect as the other senses we spend so long catering to. If you return to a noisy house the moment you walk through the door, you’ll instantly feel bad. It may be that there’s a loud road outside, or that the television is on full. It’s not unusual to get a headachey, claustrophobic feeling in situations like these. Continual noise outside the home can also interrupt sleep and relaxation. And, we all know how bad that can be for our health.

With that in mind, it’s worth maintaining peace in the home wherever possible. It’s a sure way to make you happier with your living situation and your life. And, lucky for you, there are some surprisingly easy ways to achieve the goal.

Double glazing

PXHere Image

If the primary source of sound comes from outside the home, you’d be amazed by the difference double glazing can make. Most often, we hear about this option for heat saving purposes. And, there’s no denying that it can save you losing a lot of heat through single pane windows. But, the sound reduction benefits are worth just as much attention. If you live by a railway or a busy road, these could be your saving grace. The moment you close the door, those outside sounds will become nothing more than a horrible memory. Say hello to peaceful evenings, and restful nights.

The right floor

If the primary source of noise comes from within your home, consider which flooring you choose. Wooden floors are an obvious no-go for the peaceful home. The echoing impact of a choice like this could give you a headache the moment you hear your shoes on the surface. If you do have wooden floors, investing in rugs can be a fantastic way to mute the sound. It may also be worth looking to the best underlay you can find, which can go a long way towards reducing noise. If you want to play it safe, opt for carpet. But, even with this choice, it’s worth investing in the right underlay for your needs.

Pixabay Image

Keep the volume down

Stepping away from interiors a little, it’s also worth setting a low volume limit and sticking to it. This could mean no raised voices, or no turning up the television past a set point. This may meet resistance at first. But, if you put efforts into enforcing these rules, everyone will soon get used to them. Make sure, too, to stick to this yourself. Keep your tone level, and put the subtitles on the television if you’re struggling to hear. Within no time, your home will be the peaceful haven you’ve always longed for.

Sweet Gadgets That Can Smarten Up Your Lifestyle

https://www.pexels.com/photo/books-and-speakers-on-black-wooden-shelf-683929/

There are so many different things that we need in our lives; many of which are there more out of necessity than anything else. But, you can actually choose to pick out items that you need, that can actually make your life better too. From more convenient to more enjoyable, there’s a wealth of techie and smart accessories out there on the market that can really improve your lifestyle. So whether you find yourself stressed out with systems that aren’t really working for you, or you just want a more efficient setup, you’ve come to the right place. Because here are the gadgets that are going to smarten up your lifestyle.

Smart Home Hub

We’re going to kick off with something that will instantly change the way you live at home. It’s nothing all that new, or even groundbreaking, but a smart home hub will be a great addition to your lifestyle as it is now. In fact, it will just improve it. With a hub installed and the right accessories plugged in, you can control the heating by room, the lighting and sounds too – you can even close the curtains automatically. This is a great gadget to make your home more efficient and safe too – because the functions can be used to make you look like you’re in, and get the house ready for when you get home.

Countertop Chargers

No matter how new your phone is, or how little you use it, it’s highly likely that you run out of battery quite often. It’s just a fact of life. So, you’re going to want to make sure that you are able to charge it wherever you are around the house. And this is where a charging surface can come in. Because you’ll be able to charge your phone as it rests on the kitchen counter. Both cool and convenient, this will be a lot of fun to install.

Cutting Edge Diffusers

It’s easy to think about some of the bigger things that can spice up your life, but the smaller things can too. Because something like a cold air diffuser can completely change the atmosphere of your home. You’ll definitely notice that the aroma is in the air, and it can help you to kick back and relax a little more too.

Robot Vacuum

If you love your home to be clean and tidy a lot of the time, but you never really seem to have the time to keep it that way, you’re going to want to pick yourself up a robot vacuum. You can set these little beauties on a timer so that they can run around and pick up the dirt on a set route, then head on back to their dock and charge for the next time. Incredible, right?

Barista-Level Coffee Machine

And finally, if you’re a coffee lover, then going to want to think about getting yourself a state of the art coffee machine. Because filter pots can be great, but there’s nothing quite like knocking up a barista style coffee from the comfort of your own home.

So You’re Teaching Your Son or Daughter To Drive

It’s always an exciting time when a young son or daughter is entering adulthood. They have their whole life ahead of them, and you’ll be on hand to help them navigate their way through this murky world. When they reach the right age, you might be the first driving teacher they have, showing them the basics and getting them ready to hit the road for good. Below, we take a look at a few essential tips you’ll need to consider to ensure it doesn’t end in one big family screaming match.

Source: Pexels.com

Ready When They Are

There might be a driving age, but that doesn’t mean that everyone has to buckle up and begin driving the second they reach that age! There should never be any pressure to get behind the wheel. If there is, then the lessons will be pointless; the child will be too nervous to absorb the information they’re receiving. Of course, it’s OK to give a person a gentle nudge in the right direction, but if they’re really resistant, then listen to them and postpone the lessons until they’re ready.

You’re a Coach, not a Parent

You’ll have taught your son or daughter many life lessons over the years; that’s what good parenting is! But things are a little bit different when it comes to learning to drive. Behind the wheel, things can get dangerous, and as such you need to be more in the mindset of a coach than a parent. Your son or daughter is going to freak out at some point, and when they do, you need to be a calming voice that’ll tell them what to do. In any case, what teenager listens to their parents? Take the “I’m a coach” route!

Starting Small

Driving a car might be the easiest thing in the world to you, but then again, you know how to do it. For someone who has never been in the driver’s seat, it’s like walking on the moon. Nothing makes sense. As such, it’s imperative that you take things slowly and just start small. With things like this, progress is always made inch by inch. And when it comes to driving, that’s probably quite literal: they’ll only be driving a few inches at a time!

Prepare for Things to Go Wrong

Of course, you hope that everything runs smoothly. But the fact is that every time anyone gets behind the wheel, there’s the possibility that something might go wrong. Make sure you know what you’ll do if you’re involved in an accident when you’re teaching your son or daughter to drive. This will mean staying calm, making sure everyone is OK, and checking out https://www.robinettelaw.com/west-virginia/morgantown-car-accident-injury-attorney/ to assess your legal options. As ever, it always pays to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Teaching about the Vehicle

When you’re teaching someone to drive, it’s not just about making sure they know how to operate the vehicle. It’s about teaching them about the vehicle; how it works, how to fix things, and all the other aspects of car ownership. You might think that it’s obvious how to turn the lights of a car on, but to someone who has never driven a car before, it can be a complete mystery. Additionally, make sure they know how to check and change the essential fluids, turn on windscreen wipers, and what to do if they’re driving in adverse weather conditions.

Time for Expert Advice

Alas, all good things must come to an end. You might think that you’re a wonderful driving instructor, and you might be, but if your son or daughter is going to pass their test, then eventually they’ll need to get help from a professional. You’ll have picked up bad driving habits during your time on the road, and as such you’re unlikely to know how to pass a test. But hey, don’t be too upset: you’ll have played a big role in getting your child on the road!

Make it Fun

It’s easy to get stressed when you’re in a vehicle with a person who has never driven before. And make no mistake: driving is serious business, and you should treat it as such. However, like in every other aspect of life, there’s also the possibility to make it fun, too. Wherever possible, adopt a relaxed attitude and try to be an inspiring teacher to your child.

With a bit of luck, your son or daughter will become a terrific drive, and it’ll be in part thanks to your guidance.

Baroque Of Ages: Music, Its Health Benefits (And Drawbacks)

Pexels

Music is many things to many people, as well as it being the “food of love”, “it’s medicine”, to quote Kanye West. But also for all of its benefits, there are a couple of drawbacks, so let’s give you a rundown of why music is great for you, but how it can be bad for you.

A Major Key: The Benefits

There are many benefits to music, almost too many to list. Listening to music, especially classical music has been shown to improve the study habits of school children. In addition to this, taking music or singing lessons at a very young age can have a positive effect on academic performance as well as raise their IQ. It has a fantastic effect on stress, and this has been evidenced in people who listen to heavy metal music are actually more relaxed than the average person! Music also has the power to help you process information, have you ever listened to a song and been instantly catapulted back in time to a specific moment? That’s the power of music! It’s also been beneficial to those with Alzheimer’s. There is a non-profit organization called Music and Memory who are using music to help patients with dementia or in cognitive decline to remember a certain part of their life by being played a specific song.

A Minor Key: The Drawbacks

For all of its positives, there have to be a few negatives to listening to music. Mainly, the issue lies in listening to too much music, especially in how you listen to it. The one main problem with listening to too much music is that it can severely impact your hearing. There have been many cases of rock and pop stars who now suffer from tinnitus, such as Chris Martin of Coldplay, Will.I.Am, and Pete Townshend from The Who. For those that don’t know much about tinnitus, you can look at these tinnitus FAQs, just in case you suspect you may be suffering from tinnitus or a related hearing problem. Preventing hearing loss can be achieved by listening to music at an appropriate volume, as well as making sure you are not overexposed to loud noises and don’t listen to music at loud volumes through your earphones.

We all benefit from music in so many different ways, and this is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to getting the benefits of listening to your favorite artist. But in enjoying your favorite artist, it’s always beneficial to listen to it at a safe volume, but also it’s a fantastic well of information. From the mathematically complex structures of baroque and early classical music, all the way through to densely layered information via bands like Radiohead and Manic Street Preachers, music is one of those things that you can get constant gratification from. You can find new things every time you listen back to a song you’ve heard a million times before. And that’s one of the wonderful things about music, not to mention the fact that you can dance to it!

3 Incredibly Useful Monitoring Systems

Monitoring systems can help us to keep track of the various things happening in our lives. They can ensure that we are safe and help us to save money. Here are three types of monitoring systems that are vital and that everyone should use.

Security

There are few things as important as your home security. You should feel safe to sleep at night and not have worry about being burgled or people breaking into your home. With that in mind, you should have some kind of monitoring system for your home security. This might come in the form of cameras that monitor the exterior of your home or an automated light that turns on around your house to deter unwanted visitors. The footage captured by the security system can help to find the criminals who were in your house and having visible cameras can help to put off potential thieves in the first place. A security system is especially important if you live in a large property or have land of some kind. This is because you can’t keep an eye on all of it at all times, so having a monitoring system can help spot crimes and help prevent them, too.

Tyres

Tyre pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) keep an eye on the pressure of all of your tyres at all times. You might be thinking, why do I need a TPMS? The reason is that the tyres in your car will lose pressure over time, so having a system that monitors this will be a big help. This is because if your tyre has a low pressure, then you can cause damage to your car. This can be expensive and time-consuming. Having your tyres at the correct pressure can also increase the tyre’s lifespan, and this means that they will need replacing far less frequently. This again saves you both time and money. A TPMS is a small device and will have no impact on your driving or how you use your car other than to tell you when you need to add or remove pressure from your tyres. It can save you a lot of money in the long run, and that is why it is such an essential item. You can, of course, buy handheld pressure checkers, but these require you to regularly manually check your tyres.

Electricity

If you know how much you are spending on your electricity and at what times of day, then you can take steps to reduce this or at the very least understand what you are spending your money on. Electricity monitors come in many shapes and sizes and can be of varying complexity. You can have a monitor that just tells you your current usage, while others allow you to control your electricity to various appliances and rooms from a single place. Both are useful tools, but the later allows for more control. It does, however, require more work to be done on your house to allow for this kind of control. With this in mind, it is worth considering which is the best fit for you.

Easy Ways To Enhance Your Interiors

Some people revel in the thought of carrying out an interior makeover, but for others, the prospect of redecorating is much less appealing. If you’re in the second camp, we bring good news! Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to spend a fortune or devote every waking second to DIY to make your home look more attractive. Here are some easy, affordable ways you can enhance your interiors.

Try a new color

If you’re bored of your interiors, changing the colorway, by painting or even using removable wallpaper as a less permanent option, is one of the simplest and most effective ways to breathe new life into your décor. Choosing a new shade will alter the look of the room instantly, and you can transform each space without spending too much time or money on the project. Think about what you use each room for and select tones that complement the style and function of the room. In the bedroom, for example, you want to avoid bright colors that will energize and reinvigorate you and opt for soothing shades that will help you relax. If you’ve got a small space, swapping dark colors for lighter tones will create the illusion of a larger, brighter room. Take a trip to the hardware store, look at some paint charts and get some testers. It’s also a good idea to look online and flick through interior design magazines to get some ideas and inspiration. If you’re doing the painting yourself, remember to clean and sand the wall before you apply primer and your first coat of paint.

Focus on the details

You’re probably familiar with the saying ‘the devil is in the detail’, and it’s a really good idea to embrace this concept when you’re decorating or redesigning your home. It’s not always about buying that statement piece of furniture or choosing bold printed wallpaper to bring your living room to life. Using accessories, you can set the tone of the room and introduce quirky, personalized touches that will make your home unique. From toilet brushes and matching toothbrush holders in the bathroom to cushion covers, rugs and lamps in the bedroom, the finishing touches can make all the difference. You’ll find inspiration at Home Spa Select if you’re short on ideas for stylish touches in the bathroom and sites like Pinterest are great for bedroom and kitchen designs. If you’ve got plain walls, you can use your accessories to introduce a new color theme. You can also use these details to add texture, for example, faux fur on a wooden floor, and to combine different styles and trends.

Upcycling

Upcycling is a hugely popular trend at the moment. If you’ve got chests, wardrobes or tables you don’t really like anymore, don’t throw them away. Paint them, strip the wood or alter the shape slightly to produce a new piece that will steal the show. If you’re new to the concept, there are some fantastic guides online.

Are you hoping to spruce up your interiors without spending a fortune or devoting every weekend to decorating for weeks to come? If so, hopefully, this guide has given you a few ideas to get you started.

The Worst Things To Wake Up To As A Homeowner

With homeownership comes responsibility. This is the stuff of adulthood. If you live alone, the burden falls solely on you. But, even if you share with a partner, or have a family, there are things you need to tackle. In fact, having kids can only increase that sense of responsibility. After all, it’s down to you to keep the roof over their heads.

The most obvious things you’ll need to consider are the bills and mortgage payments. After all, without sorting those each month, you won’t have a home to protect. But, once those essentials are dealt with, there are plenty of other things to think about.

You will, of course, need to ensure the house is in top condition. This includes repairs and maintenance which every homeowner should take time for. Failure to do so could cause issues down the line. You need to think, too, about locking the house for safety. There’s no one behind you now, checking that you remembered to do it. So, most homeowners get into the habit of double checking the doors before they leave.

But, all our efforts to keep our homes safe don’t always work out the way we would like. Some things are out of our control and, as the head of the household, you’ll likely be the one who has to deal with such issues. Often, these things come to the fore during the night, or in the morning when you wake up. These are times, after all, when you can’t keep an eye on everything that’s happening.

Anyone who’s had a home on their shoulders will know the feeling of waking up and finding something’s wrong. It’s a sure way to shake off the sleep, that’s for sure. And, while you can never prepare for such eventualities, you can at least make yourself aware of what you might wake up to. Read on to find out some of the most common issues.

Bumps in the night

This is top of the list because it’s probably the most common nightmare fear for the majority of homeowners. If you live alone, it’s likely you worry about this fairly often. But, even when you have a family around you, this can be a concern. You can ease that in a significant way by installing burglar alarms which connect straight to the police. But, even with these in place, you may have to wait for a response.

It’s important to note that every house has its bumps and creeks. It could be the heating kicking in, or the door frames contracting in the heat. In fact, the majority of the bumps you will hear in the night are likely to have innocent causes. Get to know the sounds of your home so that you’re not jumping up each time something happens. Sometimes, though, that much-dreaded bump does happen. And, when it does, it can be hard to know the best plan of action.

Your first thought may be to investigate, and that makes sense. After all, you don’t want to call the police because a pan fell off the draining board. But, rushing downstairs could put you at risk. Instead, listen further. If there are no more sounds, it probably wasn’t anything serious. If you hear more, try to get closer, but remain a safe distance away. Standing at the top of the stairs, for example, will ensure you can hear an intruder. It’s also worth keeping a phone next to your bed. This is added security and ensures you can call for help if you do hear a much-dreaded break-in.

Fire

Many of us also dread waking up to fire. Yet, whenever you hear about bad house fires on the news, they always tend to happen at night. It’s enough to send shivers down your spine. But, there are safety measures you can take to ensure that no fire gets out of control before you wake. By installing fire alarms, and replacing the batteries often, you’ll be alerted as soon as a fire breaks out. If you aren’t convinced, bear in mind that three out of five home fire deaths happen in houses without adequate alarm systems.

Of course, the alarm doesn’t put the fire out for you. Hence, it’s also worth stocking up on fire blankets and keeping them close to hand near problem areas. Kitchens are an obvious hotspot, but it’s also worth keeping at least one of these in your other rooms.

A knock on the door

Nighttime knocks on the door are rarely a good thing. Anyone who has experienced them will know the heart-pounding fear of being woken in this way. But, before you open the door to anyone at nighttime, it’s essential you know who they are. Speak to them through the letterbox. Ask for identification before you even think about letting them into your home. If you live alone, it may also be worth letting a loved one know you’ve got unexpected company. Strange as it seems, this communication could help you if these people aren’t who they say they are.

Wind damage in the garden

Of course, it isn’t all about the things which wake you up in the night. Waking up in the morning can have its surprises, too. If the weather was extreme during the night, you might come downstairs to some destruction. Fallen fences, trees, and even roof tiles can cause significant stress. This is especially true if any of them have damaged your neighbor’s property. If your fence has fallen on their side, it’s essential you go round straight away and come to an agreement. Otherwise, you open yourself to legal issues. Once that’s sorted, it’s vital you clear the mess as soon as possible. Even finding a temporary way to support your fence is better than leaving it down. After all, leaving it down is a safety risk more than anything.

If your roof is damaged, you should also tackle this issue as soon as you can. Leaving areas exposed could do real damage, and cause problems such as damp in the home. To make sure it doesn’t happen, phone companies like Wildwood Roofing as soon as you can. They’ll be able to make any necessary repairs, and ensure those missing tiles don’t leave your house lacking. Think, too, about clearing fallen trees, or putting them out of the way until you can get to the root of the problem.

A cold house

No one likes to wake up to a cold house. Leaving the warmth of your bed for a cold dash to the bathroom is never a pleasant experience. But, it’s even worse if there’s a problem with your heating. Perhaps you have it set to come on, but it didn’t kick in. Instantly, you think the worst. But, the best thing to do in this situation is to stay calm. There is all manner of reasons why this could happen, including a sudden drop in boiler pressure. Of course, you need to remember that gas is a risky thing to play with. Take a look, and see if there’s an obvious solution to the issue. If not, don’t hesitate to contact a professional who can take a look for you. And, don’t panic; it’s unlikely you need a whole new boiler.

Drips and drops

And, of course; let’s not forget the feeling of waking up to an unfamiliar dripping. As mentioned above, every house has its noises, and you become accustomed to your own. Which is why it can become very obvious reasonably fast when a new sound joins the orchestra. In truth, leaking pipes can become a problem at any time of day. But, we often don’t realize the issue until the silence of the morning. Plus, overnight, a fair amount of water has time to collect. So, as well as dealing with the drip itself, you’ll likely have to cope with the mess it’s made.

The first thing to do is find the source of the dripping. Once you’ve determined the severity, you could turn off the water valve and fix it yourself, or get a professional to do it for you. The good news is, many leaking pipes are easy enough to fix. Do some research online and consider whether this is an option. If you have any doubts, though, get someone who knows what they’re doing. There is a multitude of emergency plumbers out there, and they can ensure you don’t turn a drip into a splurge of water.

In conclusion

As you can see, there are a fair few things which could give you an early morning shock. And, this is by no means an exhaustive list. But, knowing about these possibilities shouldn’t keep you awake at night. Most homeowners never experience such issues. Even if you do, we’re incredibly skilled in coping with emergencies. As mentioned above, you can also prepare by installing alarm systems and emergency procedures. With these in place, you should still be able to sleep like a baby.
