Going Biophilic: Making Your Office Pop with Nature

A trend in office design caters to workers’ well-being and the need for a better connection to their environment, and that is biophilic design. With this movement, designers are integrating nature and other natural elements into spaces that would otherwise feel cold and less conducive to productivity and interaction. It’s been proven by studies that the way a workplace is set up can greatly impact how efficient work is done.

You might be wondering how you can adopt this trend into your own space. Here are some neat ways to do so:

  • Install a green wall

Stress and fatigue are more greatly increased in office spaces that look completely urbanized and have no semblance of nature in them whatsoever. A manageable way to combat this is to install a fixture that even aesthetically creates a natural atmosphere, even if it isn’t legitimately a tree from the forest.

For instance, artificial green walls are produced in Malaysia to bring the benefits of plants and flora without the same need for upkeep (like direct sunlight and consistent watering). The mental relief that comes from seeing the presence of nature is properly triggered in mind, even if artificial greenery is used. As the imagery is curated, the brain perceives more natural elements and immediately creates a positive response.

  • Let in some natural light

One of the core elements in biophilic design is making use of natural light. Psychologically, people tend to feel tenser when there is limited access to natural light sources. Simply keeping a wide window without thick curtains or panels covering them can provide that relief to employees.

In areas that don’t have window access or see staff working at night, natural light can be generally simulated by using light fixtures that are warmer and less harsh. With the right set-up, this can even end up harnessing more creativity and collaboration than a space that is too dim and filled with harsh, cool tones. Letting in some sun also helps to make a space feel less cramped and makes way for shadows and such that produce more feelings of ease, contributing to an uptick of performance.

  • Mimic nature in your furniture set-up

While incorporating plants into your office space is the surefire way to go, you can also sustain this environment by mimicking the flow of nature with the way you set up your furniture. Even if you don’t overhaul everything to incorporate wood and stone elements, you can simply arrange your spaces in a way that feels more natural instead of completely structured and manmade.

This style can be seen in a lot of open working spaces, and you can still achieve it even if you need to create departmental partitions and closed areas for meetings. Incorporating patterns with intertwined movement and using placements that feel more organic can effectively simulate nature’s growth in workers’ subconscious, without sacrificing any cohesion in the workplace.

Try these design suggestions in your own office. You can watch the space bloom into a solid investment in productivity and employee satisfaction.

Solving The Clutter Conundrum That Is Your Home

Clutter is a more serious problem than you may think. Sure, it’s annoying that you might have to squeeze through some parts of the home and hurt your foot stepping on something you forgot was there. But it’s also known to be responsible for raising stress levels and even for worsening air quality due to the build-up of dust. It’s time to deal with clutter before it gets you sick or hurt.

Get rid of more stuff

Simply put, ask yourself if all the clutter lying around is really a necessary part of your life. A weekly look at the clutter you have in the home could help you get a better idea of what you should throw away or sell instead of keeping around. This goes not just for the random papers, but clothes, and even furniture that is taking up more space than it currently justifies at the moment. Take a page from the minimalist’s book.

Have sorting bins in every room

Do you live a busy life that tends to see items picked up from one part of the room and quickly brought into another? Do you often lack the time to immediately tidy up after yourself? Placing strategy wicker baskets in each room could help. As such, if you spot something out of place but don’t immediately have the time to find the right space for it, you can toss it in your sorting bin, instead. Then, when you do have the time, you can go through the sorting bins in the home and make sure everything finds its right place again.

Use storage that fits your needs

A lot of us have storage space at home but aren’t using it as effectively as we can. If you just throw items on top of one another until that space is all full up, not only does it make it impossible to find what you need, but you might actually be using more space than you think. Check out how a closet designer creates custom closets to see how neat, divided spaces can actually open up more room for your stuff. Of course, it makes it a lot more organized, too.

Add some space

If you’re really struggling with the amount of possessions you have but can’t add any more storage or get rid of anything, then perhaps you simply need to add more space to the home. More space is more valuable when it comes to your home’s worth. But adding an extension or converting a basement or loft could also make the home a much more practical place to live, as well. Of course, this is a costly and long project to take on, so it’s good to have a purpose for the new space beyond fighting clutter.

Even if you’re not worried about the most dramatic impacts clutter can have on your life, the opportunity to open up some space in your home is going to make it a much more enjoyable place to be, so follow the tips above and free your home from clutter’s dreaded grasp.

More Space, More Value: Home Additions that Increase Property Value

Thinking about staying or moving to another home in a few years? Whatever it may be, certain home additions are worthwhile undertakings, especially when they significantly increase the price of your home.

Patios and Carports

Many urban homes in Brisbane have carports, patios or sometimes both. These house extensions effectively expand a house without requiring extensive construction. A patio can increase your home value by 10 to 20 per cent, and a carport is an attractive addition for families with more than one vehicle. If you’re not planning to sell your home, you can still make use of an extended patio. It extends your living area while keeping the sun at bay and keeping your house cooler. The larger space is perfect for gatherings and barbecues, afternoon tea time or evening parties. A carport will protect your vehicle from the sun, maintaining its paint job and allowing you to drive off without suffering from suffocating heat during summer months.

Conservatories and Greenhouses

A garden won’t affect your house’s valuation, but a well-made conservatory or greenhouse would. A conservatory or a separate greenhouse will give your house a more refined look. You can make full use of a greenhouse even if you have no plans to sell your house. Australia is particularly hot, so make sure you choose your crops properly. Vegetables like tomatoes, cabbage, spinach and peppers are popular crop choices. If flowers are more to your liking, geraniums, petunias, chrysanthemums or orchids can be good options. You can even opt for specialty plants like cacti and other succulents or Venus flytraps and other carnivorous plants. Modern greenhouses can be constructed using polycarbonate sheets instead of glass, so you don’t have to worry about damage or accidents – especially if you have kids or pets in the house.

The Usual Backyard Cabin

Granny flats are everywhere in Australia. An extra living structure in your property will certainly raise its price, but you will probably choose to stay if you opt for a backyard cabin. While popularly used to provide a living space for older relatives, granny flats can have multiple uses. It can serve as an office if you work from home or run a business; you can even list it as a coworking space online. Use it as a workshop for wood-crafting or hobby space for the whole family. Keeping the mess outside of the house can make your family a lot happier and saner. If you don’t want to make a lot of changes, just rent it out as an Airbnb accommodation or perhaps a short-term lease. A backyard cabin is easy to maintain, and contractors can easily reconfigure it if your elderly parents finally decide to move in.

House additions cost money, but they make your house more spacious and comfortable or give it more character. The right additions pay for themselves by either raising your quality of life or raising your house’s valuation if you plan on selling in the future. So choose a project that best suits your needs.

What's That Clunking Sound? Probably A Problem With Your Plumbing

While ghost stories have always been with us, nothing accelerated their popularity more than modern plumbing systems. Pipes, boilers, and faucets have an uncanny ability to stimulate our superstitions, thanks to the eerie sounds they make when they malfunction.

Plumbing noises, however, aren’t the dead trying to communicate with you – they’re just a sign that you have something wrong with your system, and you need to do something to fix it.

Knowing what different sounds mean, though, can be a challenge. If you’re not a plumber, you can’t always tell the difference between a whistling or clunking noise, and whether it is dangerous or not.

In this post, we’re going to run through some of the noises you can hear and what they might mean. Don’t take any of this as gospel; you’ll need an accredited plumber to diagnose the actual issue with your system. But these general rules of thumb can help steer you towards the source of the problem.

Banging Sounds In Your Pipes

Pixabay – CC0 License

Banging sounds in your pipes are among the most unnerving noises that you can hear in your home. All that rattling and clanking can lead you to believe that there’s a poltergeist in your midst.

The actual cause of this sound is something called a “water hammer,” and it usually means that you have some kind of blockage.

Piping doesn’t stay perfectly clean forever. Over time, gunk builds up in the system and impedes the flow of water. When this happens, it jolts around, creating a hammer-like action.

The trick here is to clear the obstruction. Identifying where that is, however, is a challenge, and requires the help of a professional. A company that specializes in plumbing such as Quick Clear Drainage is a good choice to address and identify the problem. Don’t start taking your piping apart yourself – you’ll wind up with flooding.

Growling When You Turn On The Hot Water

If you’ve noticed a growling noise when you switch on the hot water in your home, you’re not alone. It is a plumbing problem that afflicts most homeowners at some point in their lives.

The good news is that it doesn’t mean your plumbing is angry with you. Instead, it is usually a sign that there is a problem with your water heater. The thermostats in water heaters can sometimes go haywire, causing them to overheat the water. When this happens, they reach boiling point, creating bubbles of water vapor in the system. When you turn on the tap, these bubbles escape energetically, producing the noise that you hear.

Growling is potentially a severe problem that could cause your water tank to explode. If you have this problem, leave your faucets running for ten minutes and turn off your boiler manually.

Whistling When You Use The Shower Or Turn On A Faucet

Whistling sounds when you turn on your shower or faucet usually indicate an obstruction. It could mean that you have debris in the system or an issue with your ABS butterfly valve. Whatever the cause, the solution is relatively straightforward – replace the defective part.

In some cases, whistling results from loose material inside the piping. As water rushes past, it creates a kind of howling sound. Usually, this kind of whistling is benign, but it is also annoying, so you may want to fix it anyway.

If your toilet whistles after you flush it, then it is likely the result of limescale buildup. You can buy special products you add to your cistern that remove any residue naturally.

Gurgling Sounds When You Empty The Bath

Hearing gurgling sounds when you empty the bath is another common plumbing annoyance, seemingly with no explanation. Again, it is not some spirit trapped in your piping – usually, it is a sign of a clog.

Most clogs in the bathroom result from hair traveling into the pipe and then becoming congealed with shower products. Typically, you wind up with a big, slimy lump of material. Eventually, this accumulates more debris and grows into a clog that blocks your pipes completely.

Dealing with this issue is usually relatively straightforward. Either grab a plunger and try to dislodge it that way. Or use some drain unblocking fluid to dissolve and remove it.

Dripping Sounds That Don’t Stop When You Turn Off The Faucet

Hearing dripping sounds when all your faucets are closed can be a little unnerving. Unfortunately, you can hear dripping for all kinds of reasons. If the dripping carries on regardless, then it could be a sign that your pipes are leaking. If that’s the case, seek professional assistance immediately. Leaving the problem unresolved could lead to severe water damage.

Get a Lower Rate on Your Car Insurance

pexels

Car insurance is a cost all drivers have to fork out for because unfortunately, it is necessary to protect yourselves and your car. It can be difficult for new drivers and others in high-risk categories to get a good rate on your premium. Here are some simple tips to help you reduce your car insurance as much as possible.

Shop around

There are plenty of price comparison sites which can help you compare different offers and find the best one for you. Take your time and do your research.

Don’t opt for auto-renewal

Car insurance companies don’t tend to reward loyalty for some reason so you’ll never get a better offer than your first one. They tend to make better deals to lure new customers but you could even end up paying more your second year so it’s a better idea just to change company. Give yourself some flexibility and freedom.

Add an experienced driver

If you’re a new driver or in a high-risk category due to your age or inexperience, try adding a more responsible driver to your premium. This will help to reduce your rate as they will be considered a safer and more reliable option. Don’t commit “fronting” however and take out the insurance primarily in their name. This is fraud and will punishable by law. Once you have a blip on your car insurance it’ll be very difficult to get a good deal, if any again.

Tweak your job title

This is a technique used to make you sound like you have more responsibility in your job, without actually lying of course. Some titles carry more weight, whether this is fair or not, and appear more impressive. Compare, “teacher” with “guitar teacher”, for example, or “construction worker” and “builder”. You can change the name without lying about what you do, as it’s very important to be honest about everything on your car insurance application. There are many interesting ways in how your job title can affect your car insurance, in fact, certain jobs are considered higher risk than others and won’t be offered a lower rate.

Go used

Opting for a used car can reduce your car insurance premium. New cars face a dramatic depreciation as soon as they leave the dealership. They rapidly decrease in value in the first few years. Used cars will have already been through this depreciation process, so you won’t have to pay “gap” insurance which is on the calculated difference between the original price and the depreciated value.

Avoid accidents
A sure-fire way to get a good deal on your car insurance is by becoming a safer driver. Don’t speed or slam on the brakes, keep that road rage under wraps and stay in control. If the unfortunate does happen to be sure to consult experts in auto body repair such Alan Byer Collision. Have regular checks on your car and keep up your maintenance. This will also save you money on costly repairs in the future.

A Passive Effort: Ways To Make Extra Money Without Trying

Pexels – CC0 Licence

It seems that everybody is looking for work nowadays and while people could always do with a bit of extra cash it seems that we really have to work hard to get something sorted on the side. People inevitably set up things like side hustles but making money on the side is usually something that requires a lot of effort. And as nice as it is to think that we could make money without even trying there are a few things that we can take advantage of. What are these?

Promotions

If you have a significant following online you may very well be aware of influencer marketing where companies send you items to review. After a while, whether you’ve got an online following on social media or a blog, companies can approach you to put links into your posts that go to their products, also known as affiliate marketing. But there are other things that you can do in the real world. A very good example would be to use your car as promotional material. There are vehicle wraps that go around the vehicle for specific products meaning that all you need to do is drive around and you will get paid for it.

Signing Up For Focus Groups

If you set up a profile with a marketing company they can contact you with specific focus group offers that suit your interests. Focus groups are all about sitting in a room and talking about things that you like or don’t like. But sometimes you can do it from the comfort of your own home! Focus groups tend to pay in cash and right away so you don’t have to wait for your bonus!

Sell Your Stuff

Yes, it’s obvious but have you had a look at the junk you have accumulated over the years recently? If you are considering a minimalist lifestyle or there’s a lot of clothes that you don’t use anymore put them online and make a decent chunk of money. It’s one of the last options for most people, especially when they are desperate, but if you’ve got things like old smartphones hanging around and clothes that you haven’t worn for the last 12 months it’s time to take the plunge and get rid of them.

Can You Get Paid To Work Out?

There are apps like Gympact that give you money when you hit your workout goals. You may wonder how this is actually subsidized, but it’s paid for by the people that are unable to stick to their own goals! It’s a perfect way to keep you motivated and if you can get paid to get fit, why don’t you take advantage of this?

While making money without trying can seem like an over-exaggeration, there are things that you can do to earn money while living your life. Because if you are someone who likes to shop or idly scrolls through social media, there are credit card offers that give you cash back, as well as survey websites. Everybody needs to make extra money now so why don’t we find the options where we don’t need to try?

Common Ways People Try To Save Money That Isn’t Good For You (And What You Should Do Instead)

Pixabay – CC0 Licence

Ask anybody in the modern-day if they’ve got problems with their finances, and the likely answer is that they most definitely do. We’ve all got our crosses to bear, whether it’s with regards to debt or we are trying to buy a house. When we look at the factors that result in so much debt, we have to take into account the stress is associated. Some people feel that they’ve got to cut so many corners in order to live a comfortable lifestyle, even though on the surface they are earning more than enough, but there are so many people that have no choice but to cut corners in order to sustain their current lifestyle which can have a major bearing on their health and happiness. What are some of these components that seemingly well off people need to undertake in order to keep their finances afloat? And if you are struggling, what can you do to ensure that you make life easier for yourself in a financial sense but also not feel the burden of modern-day money stresses?

Cutting Back On Insurance

Many people feel that insurance is one of those things that you’re paying out for, but you never end up using it. When you are considering just how much of a difference it could make to your lifestyle, cutting back on a monthly payment for your insurance policy, whether it’s car insurance, life insurance, or even insurance for your worldly possessions it’s hardly a surprise that when people are struggling that this is one of the first things to go. But we’ve got to think about the overall repercussions of not having insurance. For example, driving without insurance is such a cardinal sin that you could pay the price, literally and figuratively, in a legal sense. Cutting back on insurance when you are trying to save money in terms of your home or are attempting to fix up your home as an investment could mean that you will suffer a burglary or an accident if it is not covered by insurance. The fact of the matter is that insurance is so important that it’s got to be one of the key expenditures in your life. It’s there should the worst-case scenario happen.

Going Without Food

There are so many tales of families that are going without specific provisions so their children can go to school with full bellies. As sad as this is, it’s more widespread than you think. Many families feel that they’ve got to go without a meal and when we look at places like the UK who are suffering unprecedented amounts of austerity, the increase in food banks, where people go and get provisions that have been donated by other people, is on the up. But going without food means that we are putting our health at risk. If you feel that in order to make ends meet that you’ve got to go without food, partly this can be to do with the type of food you are used to but you can also figure out ways to make food go further. Something like batch cooking is a very good way to expand your provisions. Nobody should go without food. But the reality that many families are considering this is a stark truth that is hitting home to many people.

Not Earning Enough Money

Everybody feels that they are getting enough money in order to sustain a certain lifestyle. We all feel we could do with a pay rise, and the fact of the matter is that people are looking at side hustles or an extra job to acquire additional income means that we’ve got to be smarter with the money we have. When we’re trying to save for a house, one of the most challenging components is minimizing your debt. When we don’t earn enough money, we lean on credit cards too much in order to pay bills or just to get by from month to month. When we don’t earn enough to sustain our lifestyle, this is when we have to make alterations to our daily lives. There are so many resources out there that can help with this, such as the budget calculators you see online. Taking a long hard look at your incomings versus outgoings can be a complicated conversation to have, especially when you have dependents. But as we begin to unravel our lifestyle and see what we’re doing is harming us in the short-term, then we can start to make changes for the better.

The Temptation To “Keep Up With The Joneses”

We live in an age where we can get material goods on tap. We can order something online and within 12 hours, it’s in our hands. And when we live in such an immediate culture, the temptation to order things so quickly means that we end up paying the price. We’ve also got to think about the social implications of having things. While there is a leaning towards minimalism in some areas, when you live in in a neighborhood that looks affable, where everybody is driving a nice car, and appear to go on family trips all the time, this can send a message to us that we’ve got to keep up with them in one way or another. But this pressure results in unprecedented stress. When we are in a stressful environment where we feel that to maintain some sort of pretense we’ve got no choice but to spend money, we lose track of our abilities to control our incomings and outgoings. The first port of call can be to inquire about a pay rise or to earn more money, but when we increase our earnings to match our lifestyle, our expenditure begins to expand further out. This is a sign that we are never content with where we are. It’s a psychological problem rather than a physical one. By looking at your mindset and beginning to understand where your problems lie, you can start to make peace with the fact that money isn’t everything. Yes, it’s a cliche, but we’ve got to remember that when we only earn so much, we’ve got to stay within our means. Because we can feel that pressure with friends that have earned more over the years, trying to catch up stops us from focusing on the things that matter.

Dealing With Financial Stress

Because we live in an age of rising costs, we start to feel that we have no option but to fight against the rising tide. We only earn so much so we “put up with it,” and we think that because there’s only have one life to live that we should make the most of it. Some people say that it’s “only money” and this is a dangerous mindset, but we can all understand where they come from. It’s about not letting financial stress envelop your entire life; it’s about being happier despite the circumstances. We all suffer from some sort of financial burden. Whether we’re trying to save up for something, or we can feel that we don’t earn enough day-to-day. But when we start to address our earning potential in comparison to our learning power, we can begin to make better habits, not just in terms of spending money but in terms of how we live our lives. Some people can’t bear the idea of looking for bargains because it feels like a step down, but we’ve got to remember the important thing that learning a habit takes some time. It can take at least 8 weeks to set in. When you’re used to a particular way of life and having to cut back on your outgoings and it feels like you are depriving yourself, it’s important to remember that whether it’s trying to save money or keep up with the Joneses that a lot of people are feeling the pinch. They just feel it differently to you. They may have a fantastic house, but they may still buy their furniture off Facebook Marketplace. And this is something we’ve got to think about. Material goods aren’t the be-all and end-all, and for those people that are trying to acquire material goods in order to feel better or live a better life are feeling the pinch in a similar way.

The stress of living in the modern-day means that we feel we’ve got to treat ourselves. But it becomes a very vicious cycle when you begin to treat yourself to something because it’s a Friday and then you feel so stressed by Monday morning that a little treat would benefit you again. Not that we’re saying you need to deprive yourself but you’ve got to understand the repercussions of your actions. It’s something that we all suffer from now. Learning to save money can seem impossible when there are mounting bills. The cost of living is increasing, but the pay is not matching it. So tightening our belts becomes the default option. But this means that we get stressed and we lash out at the people we love. Perhaps in order to live a happier life, we’ve got to understand that when we reduce our material goods we don’t necessarily feel worse off. Whether you have got children that have peer pressure in order to have the latest toy or you live in a neighborhood where you appear to be the poorest person, the fact of the matter is that you’ve got your own life to lead rather than comparing yourself to others. And perhaps this is the key to feeling freedom in an emotional and financial sense.

Turn Your Home Into a Money-Making Property

If you are a homeowner or a land owner, then you will know that there are so many costs associated with owning a property. Utilities. Mortgage payments. Property Taxes. Not to mention the other costs that come with everyday living; there are all kinds of different ways that our homes can end up costing us some money. Many of us know that owning a property is an investment, and it can pay off in the end when you move onto a bigger home, or sell your home. But there is no need to make yourself wait that long in order to see the financial benefit from your home. So why not look to make some money from your home, and start doing it right now? Here are some side-hustle and business ideas to inspire. Which do you think will work best for you?

image

Add a Rental Suite

If you live in an area where it is legal to do so, then how about adding a rental suite to your home? If you don’t have room inside to do just that, or would rather have something a little more separate, then you could think about converting the space that you have. It could be a garage conversion, for example, to make a bedroom (and it could have its own entrance door). If you have some money to invest in it, then if there is space, and regulations allow, then how about building a separate free-standing structure?

Of course, you need to make sure that you research the regulations for building or creating a suite to rent out that is completely legal. It is common to require some legal rental suites to have their own kitchen and bathroom, for example, so that is something to consider. If you are needing to invest a lot of money into this, then you need to think about how long this will all take to get the money back. Make sure that you can do this in a relatively short time, in order to make it worth it.

Rent out Storage Space

If you don’t want to be a landlord or a bed and breakfast host, but you still have some space available to use for an income, have you thought about renting out the storage space? If you have a sizable space, then you could rent it out as storage each month. Where you live could depend on the demand, but there will be a lot of people that will want to store things like boats, motorbikes, and RVs, and they’ll want to keep them sheltered rather than being out in the open. If you want to let someone else store their car or bike in your garage or barn shed, then it could bring in a monthly income quite easily, without having to do too much. The only costs for you would be making sure that you have a secure space, so CCTV and an advanced locking system could be a good idea. Heating the space could work well too, in order to make sure that things are taken care of.

Hold Events

If you have a bit of land with your property, or have a large barn that isn’t used for storage or for animals, then you could look to make some money from events. It doesn’t have to be a large festival or anything along those lines, but it could be something like setting up a seasonal event with hayrides and mazes. You could rent the space out for weddings, or perhaps host things like special dinners or petting zoo events. The key thing with this is to make sure that you have the right legal permits in place (for example, a licence to sell alcohol and so on).

Start a Home-Based Business

The ideas so far have been all about using what you have to make money on the side, without you having to do too much. But if you want to do something a little more proactive, and even want to get a business started that means you can work for yourself, then launching a home-based business could be the thing to do instead. For example, if you are passionate about beauty, then you could look up how to start a skincare business and start creating your own! If you run a business out of your home, then it does help to keep overheads down, and it will also have some tax advantages. You can also use a certain percentage of your household bills (like the internet and heating, that you use when working on the business), and use that as a business expense. If you have an idea to run with, then go for it. If you’re looking for ideas, then there are a few to choose from online.

Run a Bed and Breakfast

If you have a few spare rooms in the house or are empty-nesters and have a home that is now really quiet, then you could look to maximize your rental income, then you could make your home into a bed and breakfast. If you can rent out a few rooms at once, then it can make a big difference, and be much more lucrative than just having one room rented out. If you travel a lot with work, then you could even use home swap sites or sites like Airbnb to rent out the whole property during the times that you are away.

Rent out Parking or Driveway

If you live in a commuter area or near a place where big events take place (like a stadium), then renting out your driveway or parking space could be a good way to make money. If you don’t drive, but have a car parking space in your apartment close to a train station, for example, then it could be something really simple to do, and there is likely to be a lot of demand for it. If you live close to a football stadium, for example, then when there are events, people will pay to be close to where it is. So that is definitely something to bear in mind, depending on where you live.

There are also some jobs such as electrics and roof repair that can be dangerous if you don’t know what you’re doing. The key with any home repairs is to do your research. How-to blogs and YouTube tutorials can be great for teaching DIY skills.

Use your network

There may be people in your close network with handyman experience that you can call upon. They may be able to offer their services at a discount or even for free (providing it’s not a major repair). Such people are also likely to be trustworthy if you know them relatively well.

Shop around for contractors

If you decide to use contractors, make sure to shop around. By collecting lots of quotes, you can find the best price. Make sure to also research into the reputation of contractors so that you hire a company with a good track record. Positive reviews and glowing testimonials are often a sign that a company is reliable and trustworthy.

Source your own parts and materials

Many contractors are able to source parts and materials for you, but it could be cheaper to source them yourself. Contractors will generally try to make a profit on any parts or materials that they have to buy, so you’re better off buying yourself directly. You can find niche parts such as Berkeley pumps online for affordable prices. You can also find discounted materials online by opting for reclaimed materials.

Time it right

If the repairs don’t need to be made urgently, it could be worth waiting until the right time to schedule repairs. You’ll often find that many contractors lower their prices in January when there’s less demand (fewer people can afford repairs after Christmas and so many companies reduce their prices to attract business). Certain repairs may also have a seasonal demand – you may find that looking into repairs out of season saves you money. For instance, heating system repairs are generally cheaper in summer, while air conditioning unit repairs are cheaper in winter.

Take preventative action

The best way to save money on home repairs is to take preventative action where possible. When making upgrades to your home or buying new appliances, don’t just settle for cheap low-quality options. Investing in decent appliances that are built to last and hire professional companies to carry out renovations so that you know you’re getting high quality results. Certain repairs can also be cheaper when made early. For instance, it pays to fix leaks from pipes early – ignoring them for some time could result in water damage to walls and ceilings, plus your water bill is likely to be very high.

Minimising The Risk Of Moving House

When it comes to moving house, there can be a lot of risks that are involved. In fact, it goes beyond whether your family will be happy in your new home and can relate to issues of comfort, safety, and financial risk as well. However, knowing what to look out for and how to avoid such problems can help you minimise the risk involved in moving to a new home. Something you can read about below.

Bad neighbours

Unfortunately, you don’t get to pick and choose your neighbours. In fact, you may well have bought a new home without even setting eyes on the people that live next door. Sadly, it can be neighbours that cause a lot of problems. From annoying issues such as loud music at all hours of the night to scarier issues such as violence or criminal activity.

Of course, one way to screen for this sort of concern is to take a good look at the properties next door before you buy. With homes next to others that are being kept in reasonable condition being a better bet. However, this rule does not always work, and you can never wholly tell what you are letting you and your family if for.

Happily, there is another option you can use here as well. Its to use the internet to search whether people in the neighbourhood have any concerns with particular houses or residents. Additionally, you will also find crime statistics online as well, which can help you decide whether the community you are looking at is right for you.

Too Much Clutter

One major issue that so many households come across when they’re trying to minimise the risk and the stress of moving is going to be the clutter. Sometimes, homes are just going to have too much stuff. Where did all of this junk come from anyways? Whether it’s loads of boxes, suitcases, or unloved furniture, fortunately, there are options like junk removal that help the process. However, you’ll still need to go through everything to see what your household can and cannot depart with.

Contamination

It’s a sad state of affairs to be sure. However, the second risk that needs to be discussed here is that of contamination resulting from drug use in a property. In fact, making or using illegal narcotics such as meth can result in a residue that lingers even after the previous residents have moved out. This being something that can be a real health risk to the new family moving in.

With that in mind, it can be an excellent idea to get meth testing by a professional done. If you are concerned about drug use in a property you have just bought, that is. Then at least you can deal with any lasting consequences of the previous occupant’s drug use safely and responsibly.

Structural problems

Another major issue when it comes to moving home is getting there and realising that there are far more severe structural problems that you first though. Something that can not only be unsafe and inconvenient but can cost you a lot of money to repair as well.

It is, however, possible to minimise the risk of this by getting a full survey before you put an offer on the property. Also, check the laws relating to poetry purchase where you live. The reason being that in some locations, sellers are required to declare any serious issues before purchase. Therefore the previous owner can be liable for the cost of rectifying them if they are not. Something that will help you minimise any finial risks involved in moving home.
