The Very Basics of Making a Millennial’s Home

The modern-day millennials are trapped in the middle of limbo. They are trapped under a pile of debt, yet the older generations think both so highly and so lowly of them. According to a recent study, millennials are already coming of age when it comes to spending large amounts of money. Companies are rethinking the way they market themselves. Millennials are up and coming to becomingthe biggest spendersin the market. Because they have a different worldview, old businesses reliant on traditional enthusiasm by the older generations are slowly dying out thanks to millennials.

As it stands, aside from Generation Z, Millennials have the lowest homeownership rate in the world. Aside from the lower wages, they are experiencing relative to the older generations at the same age, the impracticability of owning a home is more pronounced. You must really want to have a house for your own if you want to add real estate to your portfolio. A typical millennial nowadays would only go for a lease holding a property rather than buying it. According to studies, millennials are extremely underpaid, overworked, and not wanting to have children. They do not need a large property of their own if all they are thinking about is how to survive.

For those fortunate to buy their own home, millennials have a checklist of requirements that they need their house to be. What are the basics of millennial homeownership?

Low-maintenance

Their house must be low-maintenance. One of the most endearing qualities of millennials is that they are resourceful and thrifty. The world we live in now is hectic-no one stops to take a breath. What millennials look for in a home above all else is that it must be low-maintenance. They need it to be low maintenance for them to put their time and effort in someplace more critical. As a result, it is imperative to invest in a new or what is sometimes termed a “manufactured home,” however, it is worth noting that no home can be sufficiently protected from pests like ants and mice that can burrow their way into the home. It is important for millennials to have companies that have comprehensive services, to “kill two birds with one stone.” Companies like Pest Authority and many others work with the modern millennial in mind. A lot of millennials are working two jobs just to put food on the table. For them to maintain their house might take up too much of their precious time. A low-maintenance house is a must-have for millennial real estate hunters.

As for maintenance in general, a condominium, townhome, or a home in a neighborhood under an HOA can help. However, there are often plenty of rules, some of them quite onerous and it would be prudent to be involved with the board and even running for a board spot. To be sure of a fair HOA election, there are sites online for HOA election services in California, and other states as well.

Unique

Their house must also be unique. A lot of millennials nowadays grew up in a McMansion suburb. McMansion suburbs are houses that are pre-built and are currently guided by Homeowners’ Association design. There is not a lot of room to be unique in the suburban environment millennials lived in. Most of the houses constructed in the decades of the 2000s are pre-made and are almost identical to their neighbors’. It is no wonder that most look to a house design that is unique in their own right. Instead of having a similar plot of house and lot, millennials go for those classically eccentric and different. Front doors with classical and unique designs will attract many millennial eyes. Windows with alternative window film and net curtains are unique yet functional.

Spacious

If there’s one thing millennials love, any area millennials spend a lot of time must at least be spacious. Space is a recurring theme for those who are hunting for their forever home. The same must also be true as a major design characteristic of a millennial home. A spacious home is ideal for entertaining friends and family inside. With a ton of space, anyone can do any activity with their loved ones. Millennials, as a group, love socializing.

Contrary to popular belief, not all young people are glued to their phones and their gadgets. Older generations spend too much time around that criticism to a fault. Millennials love interacting with people and sharing their lives with them.

Convenient

An average millennial’s home must be convenient. Ease of access is vital for any budding millennial house hunter. Its ease of access to public transportation, for example, can spell the difference between paying the mortgage or not. The amount of money people can save by being close to every thinkable human need is important if one wants to survive. Any walking distance to any daily activity is a win for the house buyer. Convenience is a premium most millennials are willing to pay for a house. The cost you save just by being near work, for example, can not be understated. The closer you are to the center of commerce, the more premium you must pay to live in the estate.

Smart Home

Lastly, the house must be a smart home. Smart homes are all the rage for those with enough money to make it true. While extra expensive, smart homes are the pinnacle of human ingenuity in the modern ages. Smart homes reliant on modern technology that makes all areas of the house connected.

How To Be A Responsible Carer

As we get older in life, our responsibilities change throughout, and sometimes we have to take on the responsibility of caring for others. Not everyone is prepared to care for other people, and it can be a stressful ordeal if it came unexpectedly. For a lot of people, the idea of having to take care of your elderly relatives is inevitable, and only a matter of time, but how do you tackle that when the time comes? It’s not like you’re trained for it, and there’s a lot of emotions involved too. You must know how to handle the situation, and it can be different based on the individual.

Source

Elderly care

When it comes to elderly care, there’s a lot you need to know if you’re going to take on the role of their carer. For example, if a relative is dealing with Alzheimer’s, it can be very difficult for both parties involved. You’ll need to know how to act and treat them daily, and failing to do so can cause a lot of stress. You need to take it upon yourself to understand the whole situation and understand their needs. If they can no longer care for themselves, those needs need to be taken care of by someone else – is that something you can do?

Making hard decisions

Many people find it very difficult to make time for their elderly parents to care for them, and that comes with difficult decisions. There are carers you can hire to take care of things while you’re not around, but that in itself can be difficult to trust.

Trusting the care of your relatives to another person can be difficult, but making sure their needs are met is very important. Sometimes elderly care homes are the better choice, as they offer many benefits. Living alone without the ability to care for yourself can get lonely, and living in a home where employees care for seniors can remedy that. With peers around, and many employees who are trained in elderly care who are available at all times ensures the safety of your relatives.

Selfcare

You aren’t trained for this, and you still need to have a life of your own outside of all of this, so it’s important to recognize when you’re being pushed too hard. You have to remember your needs are important too, and you still need to be the one to care for them. A lot of people feel guilt when it comes to caring for their relatives, as caring for yourself can feel selfish if you don’t have the time.

Pushing yourself too hard not only impacts your happiness, but it can cause you to feel what’s called caregiver burnout, which will only negatively impact your relationship with your relatives. You must learn when to take a timeout and when you need help with your responsibility.

Not everyone is prepared or able to care for their elderly relatives, and what’s important is making sure they get the proper care, from you or someone else.

Clean, Repair, or Replace: Which Does Your Appliance Need?

Your home appliances add so much convenience to your everyday living that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. However, like many of the items in your home, your home appliances are subject to the usual wear and tear that can affect their performance in the long run.

Have you ever experienced hearing clanking noises in your washing machine or your oven producing under-baked cookies? There will come a time when there will be something wrong with your beloved home appliances, and you will have to decide whether to clean, repair or replace them altogether.

According to an article by The Washington Post, there is hope for your broken home appliances. This is where warranties, handymen, and good old YouTube would come in handy at this point. These are all the valuable resources that you can turn to when things go awry.

However, there are times when an appliance is beyond repair, and the costs of purchasing a new one would be more cost-effective than subjecting it for repairs. Sometimes you have to make the hard decision on whether to clean, repair, or replace your appliances. Remember that the decisions that you make have to be sound decisions that are cost-efficient and energy-efficient, as well. This article will help you decide on when you should clean, repair, or replace your appliances.

1. Evaluate how much the cost of repairs will be

Royce Palmer, the president of Colombia Appliance, said in an article with Discover that you should consider replacing your appliance when the cost of repairs is 50 percent more than what it would cost to purchase a new one. Palmer says that there are times when you have no choice but to have your appliance replaced with a new one because the parts that you need for repair are no longer being produced.

Another factor that you will have to take into account is the cost and logistics of installing a new appliance. Appliance repair may be a good option if it is cheaper than buying a new one. However, when you find that your appliance would require a huge expenditure in parts and labour, you are better off buying a new one.

2. Consider the Age of Your Appliance

Some appliances have a relatively shorter lifespan. According to House Logic, when you are deciding on whether to repair or replace your appliance, you may apply the 50 percent rule to the age of your appliances, as well as the price of having them repaired.

As a rule of thumb, some appliances such as gas ranges are built for longer lifespans than others. Since gas ranges are made for heavy-duty cooking and baking, their average lifespan would come up to 13 years compared to that of a microwave with an average lifespan of nine years.

3. Are your appliances energy-efficient?

Another thing to be taken into consideration is whether your appliances are energy efficient or not. In the long run, you may be able to save yourself more money if you switch out your older model that for a more energy-efficient one. There is a yellow and black Energy Guide label attached to all appliances on the sales floor, and this is a helpful tool that will help you gauge how much the appliance costs to operate.

4. Try to see if good maintenance practices will extend the life of your appliances

Sometimes all your appliances need are good maintenance repairs for them to last longer and work efficiently. For example, your gas range could use a regular cleaning to avoid costly repairs. Periodically check the exhaust vents of your dryers to ensure that the air is flowing properly. You may also want to subject your ducts to a kitchen extract cleaning to free the ducts from grease. When you take the liberty of giving regular maintenance checks, your appliances may last longer.

5. Style is a personal preference

Another way to determine if you should replace your appliances or not is your sense of personal style. Now everyone’s style is relative, and you may want a unifying theme in your home. If you find that one of your appliances does not match the overall theme, it is better to change them all at once.

Deciding on when to replace your appliances is entirely a personal decision. However, this article merely serves as a guideline. Remember to spend your money wisely and choose where to splurge on what would benefit you in the long run.

How To Encourage Your Kids To Study While They’re Stuck At Home

https://unsplash.com/photos/CV3nkG7XIwg

Some kids absolutely love school and adore learning. They cannot wait to fill their brains with all kinds of different skills and understanding. There are also some who cannot really concentrate too much or simply do not want to learn new things in terms of the school system. They’d rather stimulate their brains in other ways and pick up skills in plenty of other areas.

Due to covid, most of us seem to be working from home – and the kids are a part of this group. Since the breakout, they have been sent home and sent back to school a fair few times in order to cooperate with the lockdown/quarantine rules.

As a parent, you’re going to be in charge of how they have a lot more during the working week. You’re also going to be in charge of the learning they’ll have to do while they’re away from the school premises. While it might seem like a difficult task, it’s actually not too much effort! Here are some ways you can encourage your kids to study while they’re stuck at home:

Positive Reinforcement

Too much positivity can taint the value of it, but kids do need to be reinforced positively. There’s often a comparison between being stern and being nice with regard to grown-ups, but kids will need to be encouraged with a smile. If you can make them feel good about themselves and about the work they have ahead, then they’re going to be more inclined to get it done.

Work With Them

If you make them do everything alone like that of an early 1900s teacher, then that strictness isn’t going to make them feel comfortable with what they have on their worksheets. They’ll look up to you and if they think you’re enjoying the work, then they will, too. Take, for instance, some of the worksheets (learn more about the kinds here) they’ll be given – some might be entirely away from their interest. If you work along with them, then it’ll keep their minds stimulated as they probably wouldn’t have expected it. You’ll probably make it fun for them, too, as they’ll see a side of you they’ve never seen.

Get Them Into The Routine

Life is all about habits. If they’re out of a learning and working routine, then their minds will hate the idea of working from home and studying when they have to. If you keep them in a school mindset, then they’re going to be happier with learning. They’ll feel as though they have to. Once we get into a scheduled way of living, operating out of that cycle can feel pretty negative.

Provide Rewards

While this might seem like an easy idea, it’s actually great for getting your kids excited. At first, they might just be doing what they must in order to get what they want at the end of it, but, as we said before, life is all about habits. They’ll get used to working in a particular way. Consciously and subconsciously, they’ll be learning things. They’ll become more interested in the things they’re studying.

How to Live an Energy Efficient Life?

The development of technology has brought us numerous benefits. We can get hot water whenever we want, and we watch TV shows at midnight. Everyone of us is enjoying the convenience of modern life. However, there are few people who are willing to stop a couple of minutes a day to think about saving energy for our planet. The recent news about Elon Musk building the solar roof in Canada brings the concept of green life to our attention. Is there any way for our normal people to contribute to our environment and planet? The answer is yes.

Avoid leaking at home

We use our home appliances every day and take everything for granted. However, whenever something goes wrong, we feel reluctant to get it right quickly. This is easy to understand because we work every day, and we naturally want to procrastinate anything which is not urgent. We intend to lay down at our comfortable couch and forget about the leaking faucet in the kitchen. After all, it will not cause any immediate danger. However, people might not realize how much water is wasted from a leaking faucet. There are millions of people in the world who can not access clean water every day. We can simply do our part by fixing the leaking parts in our home to save millions of lives.

Installing energy efficient windows

Although the world still has four seasons, we have been used to the mild temperature maintained by our air conditioners. However, you might not realize how important it is to have energy efficient windows and doors. A triple pane window has much better capacity than normal windows to insulate temperature, sound and outside elements. A professionally installed window will save a lot on your monthly energy bill. In this way, you are not only helping the environment, but also benefit your own financial situation.

Cultivate nice habits

The concept of saving energy should be everywhere in our life. For example, we can turn off the light when we leave our house or the office. For people who have a little budget, they can buy energy efficient appliances like toilets and washing machines. Of course, if we find any malfunctioning signs from our washer, we need to call a professional appliance repair technician to fix it right away. Moreover, we can tell our kids to bear the concept of energy saving in mind.

Conduct recycling strictly

You may not know how much poisonous garbage ends up in landfills, and all of those undegradable plastics will be washed into oceans. Then the scattered plastics will be absorbed by fish and other creatures. In the end, the fish will be hunted and get back to our tables. Yes, we are eating micro plastics everyday. Does it sound terrible? A lot of cities have programs to recycle plastic, bottles, glasses, etc. All we need to do is to comply with the rules to save our planet. Especially for construction sites, home improvement projects and small businesses, the garbage size will be enormous. It is important to contact local dumpster bin rental companies to take care of your garbage properly.

When we start to conserve energy in our life, it might be a little difficult in the beginning, but when we turn those greener tips into our daily routines, we are helping our communities, and the world to be a little greener every day.

3 Tips to Help You Stay Productive At Home

The pandemic has been around for a while, and many of us have chosen to spend more time staying at home to protect ourselves. Especially in winter months, everyone loves the cozy couch at home instead of the freezing weather outside. While it might be a good time to relax, we can definitely utilize the leisure moments to improve ourselves. After all, we will go back to our normal life eventually. To make the most of our time, we can use the following tips to help us.

3 tips to stay productive at home.jpg

Read more books

This might sound discouraging as we have been used to staring at our television all day long and watching the unexhausted Netflix shows. However, we also need to push ourselves to study and learn new knowledge through books. The awkward thing in our era is that knowledge becomes so accessible and cheap, but people still want to consume expensive stuff like designer bags or luxury trips. The happiness from materialistic things goes away fastly, but the satisfaction from absorbing and learning from books can be life long.

Moreover, reading books can bring you real relaxation, focus and peace in mind. You don’t have to read difficult and boring books, and even if you choose to read fiction, you can benefit a lot more than watching a TV show.

Start some passive income

Everyone wants some passive income, but you will never get any unless you start to do it. It is extremely easy to set up a YouTube Channel or personal blog. The services are free online, and all you need is to do some research and get yourself started. It is true that earning a passive income is a long term process, and you will not get thousands of followers without continuous effort. However, as long as you step into the industry, you will be exposed to many other opportunities. Sometimes, you will not need many subscribers to earn some income as long as you acquire the right audience.

Meanwhile, you can also learn a new skill to open the source of income. For example, you might think that programming is so difficult and only professionally trained intellectual people can do it. However, you can find coding books and beginner guides online so easily now. Learning some new programming language will open a new door for you, and you don’t have to be an IT expert. As long as you expand your knowledge, you are increasing your personal value, and you might get potential job opportunities.

Keep home clean and comfortable

The condition of our home is a reflection of our life. We need to organize and clean it on a regular basis to ensure that we are in the most comfortable status. In return, a tidy home will bring you good luck and positive influence. In addition to the cleaning and maintenance, we should also replace malfunctioning appliances. For example, a leaking window will cost you a lot on a monthly energy bill, so it is important to replace it with an energy efficient window in time.

Life can be short. When we are enjoying the leisure time at home, we can also encourage ourselves to improve and make progress every day.

AC Troubleshooting Guide

It’s always annoying when your air conditioning goes wrong, especially if you call out a professional, and then find the problem is something you could have easily fixed yourself with a bit of DIY. To help you save some money, here are some easy troubleshooting tips to try on your broken AC before you call in a professional.

Image – free for commercial use

Of course, some problems will need a professional to fix. If an issue is beyond your skills, don’t try to fix it yourself, or you could cause more damage that is even more expensive to put right. Know when to admit defeat and call in Emergency AC Repair

Check For Dirty Air Filters

A dirty filter can cause problems like:

  • Low airflow from air vents
  • Ice on refrigerant lines
  • Frozen evaporator coil
  • Water leaking from your AC
  • Inadequate cooling
  • Higher than normal energy bills
  • Equipment failure

Take a look at your air filter. If it looks dirty or clogged, replace it. A dirt filter suffocates the AC unit. The layer of dirt on the filter limits the amount of air that your AC unit is able to breathe in. When the AC doesn’t enough airflow, it can cause a lot of different problems or even complete system failure.

Check Your Thermostat Settings

Having your thermostat in the wrong settings can cause problems like:

  • Warm or hot air coming from the air vents
  • AC won’t turn on

Go to the thermostat and double-check it is set to cool and not heat. It sounds silly, but a lot of AC repair callouts are made to units that aren’t working that turn out to be set to heat and not cool. This happens a lot, especially as we move from heating to cooling season.

Check Your Air Conditioning Circuit Breakers

If the air conditioning won’t turn on, then it could be a tripped breaker. Go to the main electrical panel in your home and check for any circuit breakers that aren’t in the on position. If your circuit breakers are clearly labeled, look for one that is labeled AC or Air Conditioning.

If the circuit breaker for the AC is tripped, push it firmly into the on position, and try turning on the AC again. If the breaker immediately trips again once you run the AC, do not try to flip the circuit breaker again. You will need to call a professional to look at the unit, as there may be a larger electrical problem.

Check Your Outdoor Unit

A dirty outdoor unit can cause problems including:

  • Higher than normal energy bills
  • Warm air coming from the air vents
  • AC not providing adequate cooling
  • Frequent repairs

Go outside and look at your outside AC unit. If there is a layer of dirt on the outside of the unit, you can use a hose on a gentle setting to shift the dirt. If you see a thick layer of dirt on the unit, it’s better to call a professional for a deep clean.

The Unspoken Rules for a Bathroom Remodel

Since the global pandemic, we have spent so much time at home, and it is easier to see why we have increased our focus on bathrooms. Bathroom renovation is among the top home improvement trends for 2021. Luckily, renovating the space has been made easier, thanks to DIY kits and free expert tips. It is easy to tell people that we are renovating but initiating the process is where the real challenge starts.

Planning for a Bathroom Renovation

From getting the ideas together to planning the layout, there are significant factors we must bear in mind. Here is a general guide for a successful DIY bathroom makeover.

It Starts with Inspirations

We are so lucky to be in the information age where online inspirations abound. Anytime we need to update our washrooms but are yet to decide on the perfect design, we can quickly rush to check sample projects over the internet. We may see a bunch of items we want in the space, like yankee candles or custom towels, too. Trending designs by fellow DIYers and Pinterest posts are examples of inspirational sources. Even hashtags, e.g. #bathroomrenovations on social media can be beneficial.

Affordable Alternatives

As we peruse webpages, we want to be sure that we are getting the most affordable options to renovate our bathrooms. There are many inexpensive solutions suitable for DIY projects. We need a simple installation process to avoid breaking through the wall and floors where electrical lines and plumbing systems could be linked.

Understanding Technical Terms

Many online guides for DIY bathroom renovations contain technical terms. We need to familiarize ourselves with these words so we can take the right steps. We should learn such terms as curbless shower, rain showerhead, steam shower, thermostatic shower valve, and so on. Profound knowledge of technical aspects allows us to describe situations precisely when we need extra help from a pro.

Planning the Layout

There are essential tools for laying out a bathroom design. Spreadsheets offer a great perspective of how the different elements will harmonize. Sometimes we are tempted to get a new facility we saw on TV based on the looks. But it doesn’t mean the new fixture will look great in reality. We must be flexible and make modifications as we move on. Planning a layout helps us to know what is important and what works and what doesn’t.

Defining a Timeline

Many times, we have hired professionals to do home improvement jobs. One of the most important things we ask these experts is how long it is going to take. Similarly, we need to define a timeframe within which to complete our DIY bathroom remodel. When unsure, we can check online videos and articles concerning the same tasks to have an idea of the time we need. A DIY route often takes longer than usual, so adding some wiggle room is okay to cover any unexpected delays.

Saving Untouched Materials

There is some extra material that remains after a renovation task. Others go untouched, e.g. paint and new tiles. We don’t have to toss these away because we will need them in the future. Perhaps after six months, the kitchen will need a retouch.

Everything We Need to Remodel a Bathroom

Here is the right way to tackle a bathroom remodel.

1. Prep Work

The first step is settling on a new design. We can approach a bathroom makeover in various ways. Some design elements we have to nail down are as follows.

New fixtures: whether to install a new sink, showerhead, or bathtub

Colors and theme: The new fixtures must not clash with the paint

Location of essential amenities: Accurate measurements of plumbing pipes and electrical wirings to avoid damages

Storage space: Where to keep the toiletries and towels after the remodel

2. Gathering Tools and Supplies

We need extra tools besides our home tool collection. These supplies are necessary when renovating a bathroom.

Hammer

Stud finder

Utility knife

Goggles

Hacksaw

Spackle knife

Silicone sealant

Pry bar

Extension cord

Gloves

Chisel

Adjustable wrench

Power drill/ cordless drill

Flathead screwdriver

Safety mask

Wet-dry Shop-Vac

Caulking gun

Bucket

Tape measure

A bathroom remodel is a perfect way to revamp our homes, but we need to be careful not to make mistakes with it. Before we begin, it is good to plan out the renovation process step by step. This allows us to know what we are getting into. Like any other project, we should start by creating a timeline. From the beginning, let us inform other household members that we are revamping our bathrooms. We want everyone to be on the same page and make sure they are comfortable with the ideas.

Outdoor Home Makeovers to Encourage You to Spend Time in Nature

Many homeowners with backyards don’t know how lucky they are to have such a serene place within their houses, even more so now during the rise of condominiums and apartment buildings. These outdoor settings are often neglected because they can’t provide the same comfort as being inside the home does.

But there are plenty of ways in which backyards can be maximized, particularly in this digital age where people are always glued to their screens. Nature deprivation contributes greatly to depression because people don’t spend as much time in the real world as they do online.

Here are five DIY projects that you can do to encourage yourself and your family to spend more time outdoors. Utilize

the space you have at home and create avenues for you to relax in the sun while breathing in the fresh air.

Patio

One of the easiest DIY projects on this list is the patio, which isn’t technically a structure but a pavement. It can provide the same function as a wooden deck or gazebo, but it’s cheaper and easier to make because there are no structures to build.

All you will have to do is allocate a space in your backyard that you can excavate and layer with cement or stone to create a solid foundation. There are plenty of materials that you can use to build this, but you’ll have to double-check with your chosen patio supplier and provider on the availability of their stocks.

Patios are normally used for recreation, especially because you can place outdoor furniture on them to make an extension of your dining room. This can be a great addition to your home if you are someone who frequently holds outdoor gatherings or enjoys the fresh air.

Gazebo

With a big open space, a classic octagonal gazebo might just be what you need to bring some life to it. Or you can go with a more functional gazebo that can double as an outdoor bar complete with stools and built-in coolers, depending on what you’re using it for.

Some gazebos can also accommodate a small grill where you can cook during family barbecues or gatherings. But you can always go for the simplest type of gazebo where you can place a table and some chairs for quaint meals.

Pergola

Being outside doesn’t mean that you need to deal with the sun rays stinging your skin or blinding you with light. You can be in the sun and be comfortable at the same time with the right shade, which the pergola was made for.

Pergolas are structures that provide shade through cross-beams or open lattices attached to vertical posts or pillars. They can be placed in any open space such as walkways, gardens, patios, or decks to provide a level of protection from the sun.

These shades can also instantly beautify any place it’s attached to because climbing plants can grow over the pillars and beams. And because pergolas are built for durability and longevity, you can place swings or hammocks to make them more comfortable. This is a great addition to your backyard, especially if you situate it near a pool.

Fire Pit

What if you realized that you can create a campfire and eat s’mores without having to leave the city? You can do all that from your backyard when you build a fire pit that is durable and can add character to your home. Plus, you can DIY this project if you have some spare time.

A fire pit can be the perfect addition to your home if you love hosting cookouts and barbecues, or enjoy jamming with your friends and family on cool autumn nights. Building this pit by yourself can give you more opportunities to showcase your talents, from the design to the material that you’re going to use.

You can use stones or bricks to create a fire ring, and add benches around the pit where you can sit to feel the warmth from the fire. You can also set up tents near the pit and camp out with your kids to give them an experience of a lifetime, without taking away precious bathroom privileges.

Deck

A well-built deck can be a place where you lounge in during lazy afternoons or have breakfast on sunny mornings. Plus, it can add character and elegance to your home, which places great value on your property just in case you plan to sell it in the future.

Wood is a timeless material that can be perfect for the deck you’re going to create. You can also place a pergola perched on top of this deck to offer you some shade and room to hang some plants. This structure can give you an opportunity to place fairy lights or decorative lamps that you can turn on during the night.

Building a deck can be more complex and time-consuming because it’s a big structure with multiple layers. This means that you will need to have more available time or hands on deck (pun intended) to make this perfect.

Creating DIY projects like these can add great value to your life. Not only will these structures encourage you to spend more time in nature, but they can also put your physical skills to good use because you’ll be building them yourself.

Before the storm

If you live in an area prone to extreme weather, it is a good idea to have a plan in place for storms anyway, but once one has been forecast, it is time to finalize it. Write it out and have it in a place that is accessible for everyone – taped up by the front door or in a cupboard in the kitchen. By doing this, everyone will know where to go and what to do should an emergency occur. You may want to identify a meeting place as well, just in case of separation. A known landmark is ideal for this. You also want all the emergency numbers in place such as your utility providers, insurance companies, and a Storm Damage Repair company.

It is also a good idea, if possible, to make a family member or friend who lives outside the city or state your emergency contact, just in case the worst happens, and make sure they know who to contact if you do not get in touch with them. Remember to give them a call or send them a message to let them know that once the storm has passed, you are safe, to avoid them unnecessarily worrying.

During the storm

It is important to stay away from any exterior doors, windows, and skylights, assuming you have not evacuated and have remained in your home. The best places to head to with pillows and duvets are usually an interior space, closet, or bathroom and curl up until it is over. Until you hear confirmation that the storm has passed, remain where you are – the storm’s eye will cause a misleading lull in the winds, and when it starts up again, you don’t want to be caught out! Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors shut if you lose power, to avoid spoiling any perishable food.

After the storm

The first thing you need to do is check that the structure is secure and look for any signs of gas or water leakage and electrical and sewage system disruption. Keep away and contact your gas and service provider to report the issue if you are uncertain, or you smell gas or hear a blowing or hissing noise. Keep away from any collapsed power lines.

Being caught out in a storm is terrifying, but preparation can take some of the stress away. While you have survived the storm, it’s always a good idea to have an idea of what you may need to bring yourselves back up to speed. You will need to assess the damage afterwards, and contact the insurance company, but if if you start to think about the top recommended patio door company providers, roofing companies, and other aesthetic components, it can get you back on your feet quickly. It is so important to prepare for a storm, but a lot of the aftermath and admin can be reduced too! Good luck!
