Laying Off Staff Because Of The Crisis? Better Think Twice

Pexels – CC0 License

A lot of companies are laying off workers right now – and that’s to be expected. The economy went through its largest peacetime contraction in history last year thanks to the COVID-19 epidemic.

But laying people off and throwing caution to the wind is never a good idea. While getting rid of staff sometimes feels like a short-term fix, it can leave you in a long-term bind – and that’s never what you want.

In this post, we take a look at some of the things you need to consider before laying off employees. Try to avoid a knee-jerk response, no matter how tempting it might seem.

The Economy Will Bounce Back

Thanks to the virus, things seem quite dire right now, especially if you listen to the mainstream news. But when you go digging a little below the surface, you quickly discover that the economy is ticking over more healthily than you might think. Unemployment as a whole is way down from last March. And new types of business – especially the online variety – are responding to the crisis by upscaling their operations.

The economy will bounce back. It always does. And when that happens, you need to be in a position to take advantage of it.

Letting all your employees go to cover your short-term expenses seems to make sense. But thanks to COVID-19 vaccines, humanity could have beaten the disease by the summer, and then where will you be? You’ll have to rehire, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to find the talent you need.

Laying People Off Could Be Difficult To Administer

You would think that when you lay people off, you relinquish all the associated admin responsibility. But that’s not true. If you live in a state with unemployment benefits, you have to manage that too. And it can leave you out of pocket.

The best approach here is to use a firm like Unemployment Tracker which uses software to automatically calculate how much money you need to put aside when making people redundant. Outsourcing takes the hassle out of calculating statutory unemployment pay and automatically adjusts, even if you increase employees’ salaries.

You Could Create Bad Blood

Laying people off risks creating bad blood. A lot of your employees have dedicated their lives to your organisation. They want to feel as though they’re valued and not just another statistic on payroll. But if you fire them the moment profits start to dip, they’ll take it personally and may never want to return in the future.

Avoiding making people redundant for as long as you can, therefore, is good practice in business. Sometimes, it is worth hanging onto critical staff on a retainer as you wait for business to pick up again. You may even take the opportunity to temporarily negotiate down their pay before increasing it in the future.

In summary, when entrepreneurs go through a crisis, their immediate reaction is often to fire people to drum up cash. But in short-lived crises like the current one, that might be a false economy.

3 Pointers on How to Manage a Remote Team Like a Pro

christina-wocintechchat-com-TR0GG3U81i0-unsplash

Before the coronavirus wreaked havoc, many corporate leaders viewed remote work as a temporary arrangement. Even though work-from-home has become more popular thanks to the ever-growing number of freelancers, many still thought that it cannot work for corporate offices, especially for those with more than fifty or a hundred employees.

The assumption is that employees will be less productive at home, but it has been proven wrong this year by employers themselves.

Remote Workers Are Just as Productive as Office Workers

A recent study by HR consulting firm, Mercer revealed that productivity has been mostly unchanged by remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic. The company surveyed 800 employers who said that after solving issues like employees lacking appropriate equipment at home, operations have been the same as usual. Some even noted increases in employee productivity. Finally, 83% of the respondents said they will continue to offer flexible work arrangements even when the pandemic is over.

No doubt many factors contributed to the responding companies’ success in keeping business running. We can safely assume, however, that credit must go to the managers and supervisors for ensuring that their teams stay productive while in quarantine.

How did these managers do it? Here are a few pointers from corporate leaders that managers can adopt as part of their people and project management practices.

  1. Allow employees to work flexible hours.

Many employers assume that their employees are living the life while working from home. They are wrong. Remote workers may no longer have to contend with traffic, long commutes, or workplace distractions, but now they have to work around pets, children, house chores, and slow home Internet service.

Under these circumstances, it would be very difficult for employees to stay seated before their laptops or desktop computers and work straight from nine to five. It would be better to give them the flexibility to work when they can be most productive within the day.

Employers in the Mercer report gave similar advice. Giving employees flexible work hours helped them work around the distractions at home. It kept not only productivity rates high but also employee satisfaction.

When employees see that their employers support them during difficult times, their respect and loyalty for the company will increase. They will also be encouraged to keep giving their 100% at work and help their teams reach their targets.

  1. Encourage work-life integration.

Digital media expert and president of Goodway Group, Jay Friedman recommended that instead of work-life balance, which promotes separation of work and leisure time, managers should encourage their teams to practice work-life integration. This aligns with the previous section on work flexibility and letting employees work at different times of the day instead of the fixed, regular work hours.

Some employees will try to keep their work-from-home routine as similar to their office schedule as possible, and they should be allowed to. If, however, they find this difficult to do, managers can help employees establish new work routines that also take into account their daily responsibilities at home. These schedules should also allot “personal time” so that employees can still achieve a balance between work and time for family.

  1. Discourage non-paid overtime work.

Work-from-home employees are working an average of three more hours per day, according to the findings of NordVPN. This suggests that employees need to work longer hours to meet their daily deliverables. This can eventually be a problem because working unnecessarily long hours can cause burnout.

Managers, therefore, should encourage team members to finish their work within their allotted time. If they can’t convert the extra hours they worked for OT pay, that’s a sign that they should not bother with it anymore.

These are just some of the ways that managers can keep their team members involved, engaged, and productive while in quarantine. It’s not easy, but it is achievable. You can start with the three tips in this article.

Need Windows 10 But Can’t Afford It?

There is no shame in money being tight, but when you need your laptop to work from home and your Windows has crashed out on you, there’s nothing worse than being stuck on a budget. You need to work from home right now more than ever and having a slow operating system is just not ideal. You want to be able to upgrade your windows, but what are you supposed to do?

Most laptops and desktops come with Windows built right in, and the price for that operating system is likely factored into what you paid for the laptop in the first place. So, if you pay for a cheap laptop, you’re going to get a slower, cheaper operating system. Right now, you need to be able to upgrade to Windows 10 so that you can get work done and stop being frustrated by the slowness of your current system. So, let’s take a look at how you can get Windows 10 without breaking into your overdraft!

Man Sitting While Using Laptop

  • Run It, But Don’t Activate It! Okay, so it’s not the most honest way to do it, but did you know that you can run Windows and not activate it? It won’t shut off after a month like the notifications promise you that it will, either. The system will keep nagging you about activation, and you can’t personalize your screen the same way. However, it feels worth it to be able to use the system temporarily until you can afford to activate it properly.
  • Go Back In Time. If you can, go back in time to upgrade your system from an older Windows version. When you run Windows as an update on your computer, you can upgrade it for free. So, pop back onto that old laptop and it should stop talking to you about your expired promotion. You can run Windows update on your older laptop, and then use the Update Assistant to run the update properly.
  • Go Back To School. If you’re already a student, great. If you have an alumni account, you could log in and use that. Windows 10 Education is not much different from Windows 10 Enterprise. If you’re a student, you can access it for free and all you need to do is prove it!
  • A Cheaper Key. This one isn’t free, but it’s much cheaper than buying a whole new Windows 10 disc box. You can buy OEM keys for Windows 10 at a lot of places, and companies like ComputerGarage can help you to find the right way about it. Upgrading your system is easier than ever, and you don’t have to be out of pocket to do it.

Try out these methods today, and you’ll be able to get your upgrade you need. Budget should not be a factor if you’re trying to work from home. If you can’t use any of the methods above, contact your IT team at work. They should be able to provide you with a workplace laptop for a while until you can upgrade properly.

Is Your Business Facing Any Of These IT issues?

The advantages of using modern business technology are well known.  In reality, it is safe to say that the vast number of organizations can benefit from the introduction of new technology. However, notwithstanding all the positive elements, it is important to be aware of the possible issues that technology can cause. These days, these risks are greater than ever before.

It is important to keep security and usability at the top of your approach when using cloud computing, the Internet of Things and automation technologies. Here, we will looking at some of the possible IT challenges you might face and how you can prevent them.

Image via Unsplash CC0

Outdated technology

Technology is developing at an unprecedented pace. Even if you think your infrastructure is up to date, before you know it something new will come along and be better and more effective. If you start falling behind technology, you run the risk of falling behind your rivals, and that is not good news for any business, whatever the industry.

Make sure that whenever new update scomes along, you don’t miss it and stay up to date with any new developments.Attending networking events and conferences is an ideal way to not only to network with other people, but also to find out what is going on in the world of technology.  You can also get advice from an expert in IT such as Haval Dosky.

Network and data breaches

It is thought that a breach of data occurs every forty seconds and that almost half of the attacks are on small businesses with less than thousand workers. This is because, broadly speaking, smaller enterprises have fewer strategies in place to deal with these problems and are thus more vulnerable. You must have systems and processes in place to prevent this from happening as a breach of data can destroy your company.

As with everything, prevention is the best form of defence. Make sure your systems are upated as soon as updates are released, make sure that you have the best in anti-virus and anti-malware software. It is also crucial that your staff are all aware of the importance of being careful with data.

Deceleration of productivity

Technology is typically intended to help increase productivity and performance and streamline the business processes. However it does not always operate like that for many businesses. Due to inadequate maintenance or improper use of the technology, it may do the reverse and contribute to a deceleration of productivity. This does not even take into account any disruptions caused by system crashes and failures – and this is always a possibility with technology.

Making sure that your workforce is up to date with current training and understand how to use technology is important if you want to keep your business running. Not only that, you want to make sure that there is continuity across the business as well. Some staff may fear that making the most of technology will put their jobs at risk because they will no longer be needed, but if you can show them the contrary, they are more likely to accept it and use it efficiently.

How To Use Curb Appeal For Your Business

The look of your business premises can make a lot of difference, whether you’re building them from scratch or renting existing premises. Curb appeal is something that your business should make use of to draw in potential customers. When someone drives or walks past your business, an outside that looks cared for will make a good impression before they head inside.

Image – free for commercial use

  1. Keep the pavement clean. Hire a pressure washer to thoroughly clean the pavement or your car park. Keeping the outside clean makes your business look a lot more inviting.
  2. Make use of plants. Pots of greenery are an easy way to add some colour to the front of your premises. Choose a few planters or hanging baskets, and dress your front entrance with them, to keep the place looking welcoming and shows that someone cares about the premises.
  3. Refresh your signage. If the signs outside your business have seen better days, this suggests that your business might have seen better days too. If any signage needs to be repaired, get this done, and repaint anything that looks faded. Show off your branding with bright, well-looked-after signage.
  4. Tidy up outside every day. The outside of your premises can soon start to look untidy if you let litter, cigarette ends, and dead leaves pile up. Send someone outside to sweep every day and clear the frontage. Provide bins outside to discourage litter and cigarette ends from being dropped.
  5. Change your window displays frequently. If your business has a window at the front, make the most of this space for window displays. Show off what you stock. Change these displays on a regular basis. By doing this, people who walk past the store frequently will see that there is something different to look at, and might be encouraged to come in and explore what you have to offer.
  6. Make it obvious what your business actually does. Anyone who is passing by your premises should be able to tell with only a quick glance what your business does. Make sure that your signage makes this very clear and shows off your branding.
  7. Look after your parking area. If your premises have parking spaces, make sure that this area is well lit and well sign-posted. Parking spaces should be clearly marked so people can find them easily. As part of this signage, clearly flag any parking restrictions. Customers will be put off if they can’t find where to park, or park and end up with a ticket. Maintain your asphalt paving and add plenty of lighting. If people come to your business in the evening, lighting will make the outside of your premises feel much safer. If your staff leave at night in the dark, they’ll also appreciate a properly lit car park to keep them safe.

Curb appeal should be considered as part of the branding of your business. A business that isn’t looked after won’t draw anyone in, but a well-cared-for exterior can help to encourage potential businesses to come inside.

Making Epoxy Resin Products? Here Are Some Helpful Tips

Image

One of the fun hobbies you might want to take up during the pandemic is epoxy resin crafting and selling. If you have been at home for the last year scrolling through social media you have likely seen videos of people making epoxy resin tables and other items for their homes.

As a fun hobby as well as a money making opportunity it can be a great idea to try your hand at this craft this winter and see if you can get some income alongside your job.

Today we want to show you a few of the things you need to think about when starting epoxy resin crafting to give you some help along the way.

Choose good quality products

It is incredibly important if you are to start crafting with resin that you use the best quality products you can. Resin is a unique tool for crafting and it can create some beautiful designs, but you need to invest in a good one to get the result you want. Choose a good resin as well as good quality pigments to make the most of your crafting.

Have fun with colour

Colour is a huge part of epoxy resin crafting and you will notice that many videos of people making epoxy tables and crafts have the most stunning colours that have a metallic feel. Invest in good pigment powders and don’t be afraid to mix and match colours to create something unique and beautiful. You can test your colour combinations in a mini mould before you try a full craft and start to build yourself a little colour recipe book with different combinations written down.

Use a good release agent

One of the biggest problems newcomers face when creating with something such as resin is getting it away from the mould once you are done. The best way to negate this problem and ensure smooth removal when you have dried your resin is to use good quality rubber molding release agents. Using a spray such as these will just add that element of greasing needed to help you along the way.

Use a heat gun

It is so important when you are working with resin that you use a heat gun on it when wet to get rid of air bubbles. When mixing resin and pouring it it is all too easy to end up with air bubbles in your piece and these bubbles get in the way and disrupt the design of your resin piece. By using a heat gun on freshly poured resin you will be able to avoid the issue of air bubbles and end up with a smooth and professional looking product. If you don’t have access to a heat gun you can also use a hairdryer for a similar effect.

Sand and wax

When working with resin you still need to do work when you have finished pouring the resin. Once dried, now is the time to sand and polish your piece to bring out that beautiful shine and make the piece picture perfect!

Resin crafting is a brilliant thing to try this year to make some money and you may even one day be able to make a small business from these works.

Earning Money from Residential Property During a Pandemic

The COVID-19 crisis sent the real estate industry into a whiplash. While pundits can always make predictions on what can potentially happen during an economic downturn, no one could have pinned down exactly what would happen to real estate investors and their properties due to a pandemic-related recession. If you’re one of those investors and find yourself having a hard time looking for buyers or tenants, here are some ways you can turn yourresidential property into a money-making venture-especially if you worked hard and invested in its aesthetics.

But first, you should consider hiring a team of real estate agents and specialists who boast of a dynamic property marketing strategy and know exactly how to showcase your real estate asset in the best possible light during this pandemic. Make sure they have expertise in the area and know the ins and outs of digital technology, so they can market and eventually rent out or sell your property at the best price. Here are some ideas to market your property or some business ideas you can play around to earn money from it while you’re waiting for buyers.

Pop-up cafe or coffee shop

If you have a passion for coffee and pastries, consider turning your residential property into a small cafe or coffee shop where people can enjoy their coffee and/or food. The beauty of a residential property, especially if it’s on the smaller side, is that you would be abiding by state restrictions on the number of people who can gather in a small space. If you have a garden, you can also turn it into the main dining area so that customers can have their coffee outdoors, where chances of infection are much lower.

Studio

If your residential property allows for natural light and is clean and spacious, you can turn it into a studio where media professionals can do photo or video shoots. Professional photographers and videographers are always on the lookout for beautiful locations where they can do their projects or build their portfolio, so consider turning your space into a studio where marketing teams can hold their shoots.

Small event venue

Another option for a beautifully-designed residential property is turning it into a venue for small events. With gathering restrictions still in place in many states, small events like micro-weddings and birthday parties have been all the rage. If your residential property has a stunning backyard or designed in a way that allows for a romantic aesthetic and styling, consider marketing it as a potential venue for special events that are smaller in scale.

Bed and breakfast

If the property has several rooms and you want to maximize income possibility, consider marketing it as a bed and breakfast. Services like Airbnb have had to pivot in major ways to make sure that guests and hosts alike remain safe and healthy during the public health crisis. If you take every safety precaution possible, you can also turn your residential property into a bed and breakfast.

Storage space

The storage space industry has always been considered largely recession-resistant. The COVID-19 crisis didn’t necessarily change this since the pandemic has brought on many 4Ds: deaths, divorces, displacements, and disasters. There will always be a huge demand for more storage spaces because there will always be many people who need to find secure locations for their belongings while they figure out their next steps. During the pandemic, CNBC reported that more than a thousand universities and colleges had closed their doors to curb infections, affecting about 14 million college students. Students who needed to find new locations for their possessions while considering their options and storage spaces can be a godsend for them.

Market gardener

Regardless of where you live, you can turn your residential property into a place where you can grow your own produce that you can then sell. These include vegetables, fruits, and even flowers. If your residential property is in acreage, the possibilities are endless. While this would take a lot of investment and effort on your part, it can also help you save money in the long run if it paves the way for self-sustainability.

Endless Possibilities

The COVID-19 pandemic should not preclude you from earning money from your real estate investments. With some creativity, imagination, and the help of real estate experts, you might be able to turn the situation of your real estate investment around if you adjust to society’s current demands.

How An Entrepreneur Can Achieve Work-life Balance

The life of an entrepreneur sounds great, doesn’t it? You get to be your own boss, you have freedom of choice, and you can make a lot of money.

And while some of that might be true, being an entrepreneur won’t make your life easy and give you all the freedom you want. To build a successful business, you will have to take on many responsibilities, including securing new customers, servicing existing customers, developing new products, selling current products, and building strategic relationships. There is so much to be done in so little time. Many entrepreneurs get exhausted from running this marathon and ruin their work-life balance. If you are one of these entrepreneurs, here are a few tips that can help you balance your personal and professional life.

Implement your schedule

As an entrepreneur, every day will be different for you. Operating as per a strict schedule would be difficult. However, even though it is important to immediately deal with some issues, not every little thing must need your attendance straightaway. Not every phone call, text, or email needs your immediate response.

What you can do is create a schedule the night before. It should prioritize the activities according to their importance. This schedule must include business as well as personal activities. You need to make an effort and time for your personal life as well.

Make compromises

It is impossible to achieve the perfect work-life balance. However, this doesn’t mean that you can make your loved ones happy. You can ask them to be patient while you focus on building your business. Communicate with them about how you are working to improve their lives. Set a timeline as to when you will accomplish your goals. Let them know that whenever you achieve a goal, they will be rewarded in the form of an outing or a vacation. Giving them something to look forward to helps them understand why you spend so much time on your business.

Create a system that helps you

The only way to maintain a real work-life balance is to work on your business and not in your business. You have to create a business that doesn’t need your constant involvement for operating. If you implement automation or hire employees, you can delegate day-to-day activities. After all, as your business grows, you don’t have to make every sales call. You don’t have to create every single marketing campaign or talk to the clients for hours.

If possible, you can outsource your work and save a lot of money and time. But, it is important to ensure that you hire outside experts for the right task. For example, if you need a website, you can work with a web design company. However, you should not outsource your company’s core skill set, be it sales, manufacturing, tech support, or marketing.

In entrepreneurship, there is no alternative for hard work. But, you didn’t choose this path to work every hour, every day for the rest of your life. You became an entrepreneur for the financial freedom it offers. You need to have a healthy, well-rounded life with the best possible work-life balance for yourself and your loved ones.

Advice On Running A Plumbing Business

https://www.pexels.com/photo/healthy-man-people-woman-4146683/

A plumbing business may not be all glamour, but it pays if you do it right. If you have just started up a plumbing business, we have some tips to help you out. Read on for some useful advice that will help you to take your plumbing company to the next level. From pricing to choosing products with care, read on to discover more.

Don’t be a jack-of-all-trades

A lot of company owners assume that it is better to be a jack-of-all-trades, as opposed to having a niche company. In fact, the opposite is usually accurate. Plumbing is a very varied and wide-ranging industry, and it is critical to locate your own niche and develop it. You may want to work on home projects or you may prefer to be involved in big construction projects. Think about what you would want from your local plumber, and provide that!

Make sure the price is right

Pricing is something a lot of people struggle with when it comes to their business. Do not undervalue your worth. It is easier to reduce prices than it is to increase them

Don’t put your eggs in one basket

If you have gotten a contract with a lucrative connection, you will be excited. However, do be cautious. Relying on just one client is never a wise idea, no matter what sort of business you run.

Only work with quality materials

As a plumber, you have many different options available to you when it comes to pipe materials and branded equipment. It is critical to remember that the work you carry out is a reflection of you and the levels of quality associated with your service. This is why it does not make sense to cut corners by using low-quality materials. Instead, make sure you’re doing a quality job that people will rave about, rather than a cheap service that could result in bad reviews.

Do not take any of the knockbacks personally

Establishing a plumbing business has its challenges. There are going to be frustrations and knock-backs along the way. This is the nature of business as a whole. Try not to take these knock-backs personally. Instead, take them as an opportunity to better yourself and your business.

Create a website

In addition to the suggestions that have been discussed so far, it is also a good idea to build a website for your business. In the past, tradespeople probably did not need a site. However, times have changed, and having a website to show off your work and post your contact details is highly recommended.

Make sure you do not overcomplicate your business

On a final note, it can be very easy to make things complicated while you are running a business. However, the best way to run your company is by keeping things as simple as possible. After all, the best things in life are simple, aren’t they? Business should be as well; it does not need to be complex!
