Fight Or Flight: A Manager’s Guide To Coping With Stress

Stress in the workplace is common. The vast majority of us work too much and relax too little. And, it’s not unusual for that to take its toll at some stage. Hence why endless articles inform managers how to reduce stress for their colleagues.

But, what happens when managers are stressed? After all, they have more pressure on their shoulders than anyone. As such, they’re often fuelled by nervous energy and a lack of sleep. What’s more, there’s no one up high to ease the burden. The stresses are continual and without relief. But, it doesn’t have to be that way. If you think you fall into the stressed manager category, it’s time you took these steps to help yourself.

Lighten the load

There’s no doubt the workload is the most stressful thing for managers. If your employees are stressed from the pressure, how do they think you feel? You’re the first in the office and the last to leave. And, your to-do list is always a few pages long. But, you can take steps to lighten your load. Of course, you may think you already do that when you delegate tasks at the start of the workday, but that doesn’t work. After all, you then add the responsibility of overseeing to your list. Instead, we’re talking about outsourcing. If you aren’t already doing this, you should. Do you spend large portions of your day dealing with computer issues? Hand the job to an IT company like Houk Consulting who can take care of it for you. Do you waste hours on accounts? Hire an outside accountant to take over. These may seem like small things, but knowing you don’t have to think about them anymore could be just the relief you need.

Know when to draw a line under your workday

Many managers also struggle to draw a line under their workdays. From the moment you started your own business, there’s a chance you’ve been working well over 9-5. And, in the beginning, that was probably essential. But, keeping that up is a sure way to burn yourself out. And, that’s not going to help anyone. So, set an endpoint for your days and stick to it. For the next weeks, aim to be out of the office by seven. You won’t believe how much better you’ll feel for it.

Praise yourself for work well done

Being a manager is also a pretty thankless task. There’s no one higher to tell you you’ve done a good job. And, that can boost stress levels no end. After all, work teams report loss of morale and work effort when they don’t receive praise. And, why would you be any different? So, next time you finish a big project, take the time to praise yourself. It may be that you just give yourself a metaphorical pat on the shoulder. Or, perhaps you go all out and buy yourself something nice. This small recognition is sure to ease you more than you’d think.

You Need To Prioritize Staying Healthy In Your Busy Schedule

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you most likely know the basics of living healthily. Eating well, exercising, sleeping, and avoiding bad habits are all obvious aspects of a healthy lifestyle. Perhaps you simply ignore some of these suggestions because of your busy schedule, but many people just feel as if they’re not capable of living such a lifestyle anyway. It sounds too demanding. However, that’s only if you see healthy living as a time-consuming activity rather than a part of your existing schedule. It’s time to take a look at your daily routine and make amendments so as to improve your overall health.

Maintain a healthy diet.

First of all, you need to maintain a healthy diet. It can be hard to force yourself to cook a proper meal after a long and exhausting day at work, but following a consistent and nutritious eating pattern is essential to your overall physical and mental health. It can help to make a meal plan if you’re struggling to stick to your goals. You just need to make sure that you’re eating food groups which contain all the protein, fiber, iron, calcium, carbohydrates, and other important vitamins or minerals that you need.

Find time to sleep.

Many people tell themselves that they’re too busy to sleep in the modern world. It’s worrying that sleep is becoming such a non-priority in society, whether we’re talking about an adult who has a busy work and home life or a child who has to stay up to finish their homework and revise for upcoming exams. There aren’t enough hours in the day, we tell ourselves. There’s too much to do, surely? Of course, you’d be much more productive if you started resting properly. You’d be able to get more done during the day. That shouldn’t be your sole incentive, however. You need to think about your overall health. Drinking a cup of coffee might disguise the symptoms of tiredness, but there are other consequences to sleep deprivation. It can affect your mental health, weaken your immune system, and even undo the effects of a healthy diet and a regular workout routine (tiredness slows the metabolism and muscle repair).

When your body rests, it heals and recovers after a long day. Denying yourself that important process is affecting your health in more ways than you realize. You need to start allowing yourself the necessary rest to function healthily and happily during the day. You’ll see an improvement in your daily life. It’s worth putting off that important report until the morning. Approaching your schedule with a well-rested brain and body will make your day run much more smoothly. Of course, you might want to make some other health improvements if you struggle with insomnia or other interruptions to your sleep. Perhaps you seek medical help from Advanced Urology if stress incontinence is frequently the cause of restless nights. Remember, improving your mental health to relieve stress can help in this regard too. It’s important to work on your mental and physical health so that you can start sleeping properly and start a positive cycle.

Quit bad habits.

Everybody has unhealthy habits. For most of us, we might eat the occasional piece of junk food or have a few glasses of wine to cope with a long day. And there’s nothing wrong with an occasional treat. It’s good to relax with friends and unwind after a long day. However, you need to keep an eye on your unhealthy behavior if it starts to become a regular habit. Most things are fine in moderation, but you need to quit bad habits if they’re out of control. Cigarettes, bad eating, and even sedentary lifestyles are all examples of behavior that can have negative long-term effects. Find healthier ways to relax and unwind if your busy lifestyle is getting too much for you. We’ll talk about that more in the next point.

Spend time with your friends and family.

How much socializing do you do outside of your work environment? It’s important to set aside time in your busy schedule to see the important people in your life. Isolation can exacerbate stress and other mental health issues, but talking and laughing with your loved ones can have the opposite effect. That isn’t to say a good night can instantly cure anxiety or depression, but it can certainly help to remind yourself that you have a strong support network of friends and family who care about you. You need to start prioritizing social events in your busy schedule. You should set aside the occasional night to go out and catch up with the people who matter in your life.

Could You Start Your Own Business? I Explore

It can often start as a dream. A dream to start your own business by bringing a product or service you believe in to market for people to take advantage of. Starting a business may seem daunting at first, but often the passion you have far outweighs the worry and people eventually take that leap of faith. But are you really cut out for it? Do you have what it takes? I thought I would explore some of the things to consider when starting your own business.

Have you got the right financing in place?

One of the biggest issues you can have when starting a business is having the funding in place to actually get started. It is a big problem many entrepreneurs can face. The first step to take would be to have a business plan in place and actually use that as a way to secure funding. You could go to an investor who will take a proportion of your business profits of the future. You could choose a business loan where you will have repayments or you could even consider your own savings. Whichever option you choose, make sure it is right for you.

Could you handle the knitty gritty?

The next thing is to consider the different aspects of running your business. This might be to do with things like IT, your website, be that the creation or management of it, or even just handing the technology side of things. So much is done online and through different things these days, this is when the Error Solutions IT guide could come in handy. This will give you the guidance you need to keep your business running. The last thing any new entrepreneur or startup company wants is down time.

Making more use of social media

Social media is one of the best ways to really get your business heard. It is instant, in your control, and you can actually humanize your business by giving your brand personality. Social media is an excellent tool to be utilised for advertising and marketing plans. So you could take the time to develop some of the ways you share your business and brand. This could be done through edited pictures, using tools like Instagram stories or Facebook lives, or even just uploading at the ideal times.

Fine tuning your product or service

You also need to spend the time to fine tune your product and service before launching. This is when focus groups and market research can be of a huge advantage to you. Gaining feedback and advice before launch can enable you to make changes to improve things.

The impact it can have on you

Finally, don’t forget the impact it can have on you as a person. It can be stressful to launch a  business, it can take its toll on time and your lifestyle. It is important to remember that we still need to strike a good balance between work and home life, allowing you to recuperate and recharge the batteries so that you are fully focused.

I hope that this has highlighted to you some of the things to think about when starting a business.

Has Your Business Yet To Reach Its Full Potential?

The answer to that question is probably “yes”. Every successful business should be growing and evolving on a continuous basis if it wants to remain important in a fast-moving industry. How often do you return to the drawing board when it comes to your business plan? Are you making the necessary changes to take your company to the next level? These are the questions you need to answer if you want your business to stay ahead of the curve and beat other companies in the marketplace. The following suggestions could help your business to realize its full potential.

Push your employees in the right direction.

A good brand, quality services, and a strong marketing campaign are all examples of things that create a successful business. We’ll talk about some of them throughout the rest of this article, but the very first thing that demands your attention is your workforce. Your employees are the ones who keep your company running; they deliver the products and communicate with your clients. A shiny brand is nothing without substance behind it. If you want your business to reach its full potential then your employees need to reach their full potential.

Of course, we’re talking about more than increasing productivity levels here; we’re talking about improving the skills of your workers as individuals. You might even want to check out this library of engaging IT training courses so as to help your employees improve their technological skills. It’s very important for your employees to have current and relevant knowledge if they’re going to compete with the professionals at competing companies. That’s how your business will maximize its potential.

Exceed customer expectations.

The best way to increase your business’ potential is to exceed customer expectations. Retaining a client base (and growing it) can be tricky in a competitive landscape. There’s always the risk that customers will be swayed by rival businesses offering better deals and offers. That’s why you need to go above and beyond to win over clients and build a loyal relationship with them. There’s nothing like surprising them with a great deal, for example. You could offer your customers a discount on their next purchase or surprise them with an email out of the blue with a freebie as a way of showing your gratitude. If you exceed customer expectations with unexpected deals and offers then you’ll make a long-lasting impression on them. That’s the way to ensure customers stick around and increase sales. You might have the potential for a larger client base than you think if you just work on your customer relations. You just need to show that you care about what the customer wants.

Focus on online marketing.

Another way in which your business could increase its potential in terms of sales and long-term customers is to improve its online marketing approach. There are so many consumers that you might not yet be reaching, but a better digital campaign could change that. You should create a captivating homepage, for starters. It should be well-designed so as to make navigation easy for visitors. A responsive layout is important too; your website should look good on mobiles, tablets, or laptops. You don’t want potential clients to be put off by an unappealing website. In addition, search engines algorithms value well-designed websites, so you’ll stand a better chance of ranking highly on sites such as Google or Bing. You could increase traffic and see a better conversion of traffic to sales. It’s time for your business to realize its online potential.

4 of the Best Reasons to Buy an SUV

When the price of fuel for your car seems to rise and rise, and there can feel like some social pressure to downsize your car, some people are turning away from getting an SUV (sports utility vehicle). But there are plenty of reasons why choosing an SUV is still a good thing for you. You just have to look at how much Tesla and their new model 3 car has been in the news recently, to know that for now, electric vehicles aren’t all that they are cracked up to be. So until those things can be ironed out, a traditional car can be the way forward. Which is where an SUV can come in.

If you’re toying with the idea of getting an SUV, then here are some of the reasons to make the jump. Because at the end of the day, when you need an SUV, you need an SUV.

Auto Vehicle Suv Red Small Car Passenger Cars

image

Large Space

If you’ve got a big family, then you need a way to transport them all. Simple as that. And an SUV can be one of the ways that you can do that efficiently, without having to get two vehicles. There are plenty of 7 seat SUVs for bigger families, as well as ones that are flexible with the seating, so you can use them if you drive a lot for work, for example. Being able to take more and more people at the same time, as well as equipment or luggage, is going to make your journeys more efficient and make your impact on the environment lower. Multiple trips for the same purpose isn’t going to be a good thing.

Good Gas Mileage

I know what you’re thinking, can you really get good gas mileage with an SUV? Back in the day, they were gas-guzzlers that would have a pretty inefficient gas mileage. But times change. And with them, so does the technology. With that, manufacturers have been looking to make their vehicles more efficient and better for the environment. There are plenty of SUVs out there now that get over thirty miles per gallon, which is a pretty standard amount for a car. Good gas mileage, and you don’t have to compromise on size, space, or the other qualities of an SUV.

image

Safety

All cars have to go through rigorous testing when they are being created. And all modern cars are fixed with things like airbags, roll cage, and things like traction control. But let’s face facts; if you have a small Mini crashing into a larger SUV, the physics of it all will tell you that you’re going to be better off in the SUV in a situation like that. So while all modern cars are pretty safe, there are some that are going to make it safer for you to be in than others.

In a similar vein, SUVs are going to be the things that are better off in inclement weather too. In floods and storms, the are going to be better to get you through, and to even help others. They can pull trucks and trailers, as well as be better in snow and ice due to the off-road features that they have. This may depend on where you live as to what conditions you face. But a Toyota 4Runner is a pretty good example of an SUV that can do well in all weather conditions.

Command Seating Position

It makes sense that the higher you are sat up, the further you can see down the road. You are likely to see other cars and traffic, hazards, and people slamming on their breaks. So if you are in an SUV, it can make driving a little easier for you, as you can spot things before, or just before, they happen. It can help in just general out-and-about driving too. Think about parking in a larger vehicle, for example. You will have a better vision of the space and what is around you, as well as being able to see over walls or fences. For driving off-road, you’ll be able to spot obstacles before they come up too.

Here are just a few of the points why SUVs make a good vehicle, for families, and couples alike. They can be a good asset for business too. They can look good too. But at the end of the day, the choice is yours. Just don’t write it off as a potential vehicle for your family, as it can be a massive benefit and make your life simpler and safer.

Here’s How You Organise Everything for your Next Road Trip

Going away for a road trip can be a very exciting experience and you would be surprised at how easy it is for you to get everything organised. The problem that a lot of people have is they have no idea what they need to pack and they also have no idea how they are going to fit everything they need into their car either. If you want to avoid all of this then you can find out some helpful hints and tips below.

Space Bags

Space Bags are ideal if you are going away on a road trip. The main reason for this is because they give you the chance to pack down any clothing items with ease. All you have to do is put them in the plastic bag and then vacuum all of the air out. This will really make the whole thing way easier for you and it will also mean that you have way more space as well. You also need to make sure that you don’t focus on the boot space that you have, for example, your car is full of nooks and crannies, and these are great if you want to pack certain items. Try and put your shoes under the seat rather than taking up space in the boot, and put any snacks behind the seats so they can be accessed by the people in the back.

Plastic Tubs are Great

Instead of putting every bottle of shampoo, conditioner, soap and more in a bag and trying to slot your clothes in around them, try and use a plastic box instead. Plastic boxes provide you with a way higher level of organisation and they also make it way easier for you to access your items as well. You can even stack your boxes on top of one another as well, and this will give you way more space in the car when compared to carrier bags or other holdalls. Ratchet straps are great if you want to keep everything secure in the back of a truck or anything else similar, but it helps to know how to loosen ratchet straps before you get everything loaded.

The 7 Day Rule

If you are going on a road trip for 7 days then it’s super important that you pack a bag that will help you to go for this length of time. A lot of people make the mistake of packing way more clothes than they need, and this can cause a ton of issues when the time comes to load the car. If you want to avoid this, then just pack 5 of everything, with 7 pairs of socks. After all, you can easily wear the same t-shirt for more than 2 days in a row, and this will really help to save space if everyone who is taking the trip does it.

So it is very easy for you to really get a good result out of your road trip, and by taking the time to organise your belongings, you can save yourself both time and money.

Some Ways To Find The Classic Car Of Your Dreams

Nothing beats the idea of the classic, especially when it comes to cars. However, it’s extremely hard to find such a commodity in a world obsessed with bringing out a ‘new and updated’ model from every car brand every single year. And yet, vintage is something people pay a lot of money for, and hundreds to thousands attend conventions and shows to see the hints of vintage in the vehicles we only ever seem to see on the TV every year.

Sure, your love for a car from yesteryear can be expensive, but it’s worth it if you’re a collector looking to pad out your previous investments, or simply to enjoy the culture of them. But even attending all the shows and scouting out the used car dealerships can turn you up empty-handed, so what do you have to do to find the classic car of your dreams?

Credit

You Have to Take a Chance

Taking a chance is something a lot of people don’t like to do; it’s risky, and you could lose a lot of money. When something so valuable is on the line, you want to be assured, and always feel like you’re the one in control. However, sometimes you absolutely have to be able to let go, and take a chance on a model that might not be in the condition you want, or on a dealer you’re not sure the reputation of.

Of course, the latter option can be resolved with a lot of research, but the former is something a lot of people turn their nose up at. Stop yourself right now if you’re doing that. It’s not going to help you get your hands on the car you’ve always wanted, and it will mean you finally get to say you own a 60s Camaro or even a Cadillac. Isn’t that worth it?

You Have to Look Far Afield

Especially in other countries, even if that’s right out of your budget. Because if you know someone across the pond has the car you’ve been looking for, for a long time, now you’re going to have a much more concrete goal in mind. For example, you can start saving up for shipping a car over from the USA. Or you can simply try and arrange a trip to go and see the model in question, and practice your negotiation skills on its current owner.

As a general rule however, this is a good thing to keep in mind. There’s always going to be more opportunities outside of the pool you’ve allowed yourself to look into, and you should never restrict yourself to just a few sources for finding a vintage car. Classic cars are in short supply these days by definition, so increasing your availability is going to turn up much better results.

Finding the classic car you’ve always wanted to get your hands on will take time and effort, don’t underestimate that. But you can increase your chances by being smart about your search.

Getting Into Your New House In One Piece

Moving house is stressful, there’s no doubt about that. Your entire life is in upheaval, hopefully in an attempt to make it better, and everything you own is packed up in boxes and unable to reach. The idea of that alone can cause some people to panic, so it’d be a good idea to find some ways to make this time feel a little bit safer for you.

Of course, that’s hard to do for a variety of reasons. When you’ve got an entire household to ferry back and forth, and all the possessions to accompany them, a disaster could be around any corner. So it’s time to be prepared, which goes a long way to making your new life smoother. Let’s look into some of the best ways to get everything into your new place in one piece, and cut down on the amount of hair you might tear out.

A new door to a whole new house of possibilities… don’t let it be a stressful time. (Image)

Get a Trusty Vehicle

Having the right vehicle on your side to get all of your possessions back and forth from your old house to your new one is more important than you might think. Because of that, make sure you have the best car or truck on your side to keep everything safe and strapped in, and make as many journeys as you need.

If you don’t have the right vehicle of your own, borrow a friend’s or even look into getting some professionals to help you; the cost of which is going to be plenty worth it when all your boxes and big furniture pieces are set down in your new place with no scuff marks or damaged corners on them. If you have a vehicle you could very well use on your side, namely a spacious truck with a good bed, look into the best tonneau covers and invest in one to make sure no weather damage strips your items of their color or soaks them beyond recognition. That’s the last thing you need right now!

Pack with Material in Mind

Seeing as you’re likely only using cardboard boxes to pack everything up properly, make sure you’ve got all the right packing material to accompany your items inside of it. Namely, for anything you’re taking out of the kitchen, make sure it’s padded and protected from any transit damage, and make the first dinner in your new house a time of celebration rather than disaster.

At the same time, make sure you’re not putting any incompatible items together into the same boxes. Anything that has a liquid form to it, and thus is flammable or possibly leaky, shouldn’t be carted along with anything else to accompany it. So keep those deodorants and those battery packs separate, and don’t bother trying to put them into a professional mover’s vehicle without expecting a mouth full from them!

Your new house is a new start, don’t poison it with these bad associations!

Slashing Your Home Budget

Do you live paycheck to paycheck, struggling to pay your household bills, never mind having any left to save or enjoy? Do you find yourself worrying about money almost daily or terrified of an unexpected expense shattering your fragile financial situation? Well, you are most certainly not alone. It’s thought that 76 million Americans are struggling financially, or only just getting by. All of these people are worried and stressed.

Unfortunately, in the current economic climate, there’s no quick fix. Many of us have debts to pay off, a significant amount of us will never be able to buy our own home, and as the cost of living continues to rise, even working full time you can struggle to save enough to improve your own situation.

But, there’s little help coming from anywhere else either. If you want to ease your financial concerns, reduce your stress levels and give yourself and your family a significantly improved quality of life, you need to do something about it. While there’s no quick fix, there are a few ways to slash your household budget and save yourself money.

Make a Budget

The first step to slashing your budget is making one. Most of us are aware of how much bills are and how much we earn but utterly unaware of the smaller details of our finances. We check our bank balance and find ourselves wondering where our money has gone.

Sit down, use a simple household budget spreadsheet template, and enter all of your figures.

Look at your last few months bank statements to make sure you include everything. When it comes to things like food, fuel and luxury expenses, set a budget and make sure you stick to it. If you want extra, you’ll have to save elsewhere on your budget.

Make Some Cuts

Now you’ve got everything written down in front of you; you can spot patterns and problems. Are you paying for anything that you don’t use or need? Perhaps a gym membership or a subscription service? Cancel anything that you can manage without. Remember, it doesn’t need to be forever, you can always go back once you’ve got the funds.

Then, within the things that you keep, look at some cuts. Do you use all of your minutes and data on your phone contract? Could you reduce your internet speed?

Make Some Switches

Most of us could save a lot of money every year by switching some suppliers. Take a look at your energy providers and your insurance company. Cheap car insurance can save you a lot of money, without diminishing your cover. Use comparison sites to make sure you are getting the best deals. If your providers are the best, look into changing tariffs so that you are only paying for what you need.

Start Clearing Debts

Debts are a vicious cycle. We get into debt because we need to, but then repaying the debt and the insurance costs makes our situation much worse and means that we can never save. Focus on paying more than the minimum to save yourself money long-term.

The Most Common Causes of Poor Health Today

If we were to take a look at the causes of poor health in a large number of people, we’d see that many of the causes across the nation and even the world are the same. Knowing the most common causes of poor health today can help you to avoid them and become the healthiest, happiest version of yourself in the long term. Read on to learn more!

Cigarettes

Smoking kills around 443,000 people each year, and yet people continue to do it. It’s easy to start smoking when you’re young and think that it will never affect you, and then before you know it, you’re hooked and you’re starting to notice some pretty serious health issues. Cigarettes can cause a plethora of illnesses and issues, some more serious than others. Whenever you light up a cigarette, you’re giving yourself less of a chance.

A Bad Diet

Junk food tends to be pretty cheap, while good food is more expensive. However, you have to learn to be ok with this if you’re going to keep your mind and body healthy, as the food we eat affects both directly. You don’t have to eat perfectly 100% of the time, and you definitely don’t have to live off salads. Practice moderation and incorporate more color into your diet for the best results.

Inactivity

We weren’t supposed to sit around all day doing nothing. Getting 10,000 steps per day is a good place to start if you don’t want to throw yourself into hardcore workouts at the gym. Committing to exercise a few times a week will be better than nothing. Trying to get it done in the morning is often better than later in the day, as you have less of a chance to make excuses not to go once work and other things begin to distract you.

picture

Not Getting Enough Sleep

Not getting enough sleep is no good for your mental or physical health. There isn’t much that a great night’s sleep can’t fix. Everybody needs a different amount of sleep to function, but you shouldn’t be getting any less than 6 hours per night. Some people need up to 9. Getting into a regular bedtime routine, where you sleep at the same time each night and get up at the same time each day is the best thing you can do.

Injuries

Becoming injured can happen due to a number of things. Perhaps you find yourself in car accident and need to call Levininjuryfirm.com. Maybe you hurt yourself at work. Maybe you even do it because you haven’t researched proper form and you go to the gym regardless! Staying healthy means staying vigilant.

Excessive Alcohol Consumption

Binge drinking once a week can be just as bad as drinking alcohol throughout the week. Make sure you stick to the recommended unit amounts, and give yourself a couple of days off drinking each week at least.

Stress

Stress is a silent danger. You can’t see it, but it can affect your life in ways you can’t even imagine. Finding ways to reduce your stress levels is a must for a healthy life.
