Started From The Bottom: Are You Ready To Take Your Career Into Your Own Hands?

https://www.pexels.com/photo/startup-planning-notes-mac-book-7357/

For a lot of people, there is no greater fantasy than that of being able to walk out of their nine-to-five office job for good, telling their boss where to stick it on the way out. Of course, for most people, it remains just that, a fantasy. However, more and more over the last several years, people are beginning to put that kind of thing into practice. Walking out of their jobs working for other people and taking their careers into their own hands. The primary driving force behind this is the internet. Working online allows people to set up their own businesses where they have total control over the way that they work. Of course, that doesn’t mean that any of this is easy. In fact, there are a lot of challenges that you will face starting from the bottom. With that in mind, here are just some of the challenges you will face taking your career into your own hands.

Getting noticed

When you start your own business, unless you’re incredibly lucky, you’re going to be the very smallest fish in a very large pond. This means that getting noticed is not only your number one priority but also your biggest obstacle. You need to do what you can to make your business stand out. This means you need to focus on everything from your web design to the way that you interact with customers on social media to the branding of your business as a whole. Customers should be able to look at your business and know right away what it is that you have to offer them. Life on the internet moves fast, and you need to make an impression as quickly as possible.

Managing yourself

One of the biggest challenges of working for yourself comes on the back of one of the best things about it. When you work for yourself, there’s no one around to tell you what to do, no manager breathing down your neck all day. Now, working from your bed in your pajamas might be fun for the first week or so, but after a while, you will need to start to manage yourself and your time more carefully. Otherwise, you’re going to end up exhausting yourself, and the work that you do will suffer for it. Even when you’re working from home, keeping office hours is a good idea.

Working with others

One of the biggest draws of running your own business is the fact that you have total control of it. However, that doesn’t mean that you can do everything by yourself. In fact, it’s incredibly important that you’re able to reach out to others. There will always be aspects of your business that you need to outsource, and if you can’t work well with others, you’re going to make life incredibly difficult for yourself.

Please don’t think that any of this is some kind of attempt to dissuade you from setting up your own business, far from it. In fact, the more businesses that there are competing out there, the higher quality products for everyone. You simply need to be aware of just how much of a challenge it can be before you start. Otherwise, you’re in for a pretty nasty shock.

Get Your Sky-Bound Business Off The Ground By Taking Care Of Health And Safety

We all deal with different hazards when we’re working. For some people, daily use of heavy machinery poses risks on a regular basis. For others, dangerous building tools stand to do damage. And, sometimes, it’s the sheer elevation we work at which poses risks.

We are, of course, talking about when business takes to the sky. There’s a multitude of careers which involve working above-ground. And, whether your business comprises of cleaning windows or cutting down trees, you should consider health and safety.

This is crucial in business at the best of times. But, when the very nature of the job is dangerous, it becomes even more important. Should anything happen because you didn’t put the right procedures in place, you could lose a lot of money through legal action. Not to mention that staff will soon stop feeling safe when working. Before you know it, neglecting this area could lead to shutting up shop.

Instead, it’s time to have a long and hard think about how you could keep staff safe when they’re up in the clouds. To get you started, let’s consider some of the leading safety points worth focusing on.

A sensible workforce behind you

Before you even get your business off the ground, you need to take time over the people you employ. While health and safety does fall on your shoulders, you also need to ensure your staff can be trusted. That means, each time you hire an employee, you need to consider how sensible they seem. A good judge of this would be their experience. Workers who’ve already done similar jobs are proven entities. You won’t have to worry about such people working in the right way. Those without experience, however, are unknown quantities. In this instance, pay close attention to mannerisms during interviews. Does that candidate seem giggly and unprepared, or serious and reliable?

Of course, observation isn’t always a sure art. So, to protect yourself further, it’s worth employing people on probationary periods. That way, you’re within your rights to let go staff who don’t seem suited to the work. Ask your trusted team members to keep an eye. If they notice worrying behavior, or a new team member messing around, they can let you know. Signs like these in the early days are sure to lead to trouble. So, if this is the case, it’s time to let people go. It may seem harsh, but you can’t take chances in a dangerous career like this. If you find it hard to break the news, remind yourself that you’re only doing to keep the person in question safe.

A safe way to get up there

Then, you need to consider the safety of the method your staff use to get up high. Once upon a time, ladders were the only option here. And, these could still serve you well in some cases. Window cleaners working on residential properties could get away with one of these. Equally some builders and gardening companies could put ladders to good use. These have the benefit of not relying on electronics to do the job. But, there is a downside as well. On unsteady ground, this is far from a safe option. What’s more, a damaged ladder might not make itself known until someone’s already received an injury. But, that doesn’t mean this can’t be a safe option. By training staff on where to set up ladders, you can ensure they only ever make use of stable and reliable ground. And, by carrying out regular equipment checks, you can rest easy that no ladders will malfunction.

But, the days when this was your only option are long gone. Now, telescopic boom lifts like those found at www.hr2fl.com/telescopicboomlifts/ could also serve you well. These are ideal for getting up higher than a ladder can go. If your company cleans windows on commercial skyscrapers, for instance, a machine like this could serve you well. The benefit here is that these lifts provide stable foundations for staff to stand on. To ensure even more safety, train all staff members in proper use. And, do regular checks on the state of your machine. If you notice a glitch, don’t hesitate to call out a mechanic who can take a closer look. You owe it to your team to keep on top of things like these.

The right clothes to wear

Of course, worrying about the method of elevation itself isn’t enough. You also have a legal responsibility to provide the correct safety gear. As height is the name of the game in your enterprise, helmets should be your primary priority here. Options like the Petzl Vertex Best Helmet, as found at www.gmesupply.com, are your best bet. Hard shells like these are ideal for those who work at height as they offer complete protection. It’s worth keeping these in the workplace so that you can be sure of condition. Given that these are essential to what you do, it’s also worth keeping some helmets aside for emergency use. That way, you can rest easy that you’re always covered should there be any breakages.

Of course, safety gear doesn’t end with helmets. Workers up high also need standard options such as work goggles. These are especially crucial at height. Getting something in the eye could leave a colleague unable to see. If that happens when elevated, an accident could ensue. Think, too, about supplying options such as safety boots and hi-vis jackets. While less specific to the level at which workers operate, these are part and parcel of a safe working environment.

And, last but by no means least, you should provide safety harnesses for those out in the field. This will ensure an added level of safety, and can also put worker’s minds at ease. You should provide in-depth training on harness use to every new employee. Make sure, too, that you regularly check all your workers are following procedure. Cutting corners here could cost lives. And, that would be on your shoulders.

Take a Micro Breather!

In our busy, hurry up world, it’s easy to overlook our surroundings. We’re so consumed with what we’re doing, we forget to stop and simply take a look to appreciate our surroundings. Now, we’ve probably heard the advice to “stop and smell the roses” and its good advice and too few people take it, but even those who do, usually take it to mean not working every weekend or being sure to take a vacation over several days or weeks to recharge.

But, even in the midst of working, one can, and probably should, take what I would call a “microbreather“, as well, that is, a short break, just to take in the day for a minute.

Here’s a microbreather I took while distributing fliers door to door in January, 2017. Beautiful!

I’ve learned to do this. I work outside and while I’m out, I will stop at times, just to take a look and appreciate my surroundings. Now, I do work outside and live in the Portland, Oregon area, so there is much natural beauty to see, even in and from downtown.

But, even if you work indoors or in a not so beautiful setting, sometimes just stopping and taking in your surroundings can still relieve some of your stress anyway. And if you think there’s nothing to “take in” in taking a look at a cubicle with some paper clips in a container on it, or some barrels next to the outside wall of a factory building, or some train tracks in an industrial area, just remember that there are artists and photographers who get inspiration and create great art and/or documentation from just such mundane or not so beautiful real life scenes.

These microbreathers need only take a few seconds, but, at least for me, they do keep me recharged for the day. And they are so easy to take. But please, don’t skimp, on stopping to smell the roses big time once in a while, too!

You’ll be better for it!

Are You Ready to Stop Micromanaging Your Startup?

Micromanagement has long been one of the most frustrating business practices that any manager or entrepreneur could use. It’s overbearing, it’s not productive and it tends to cause more trouble than it’s worth. Sadly, there’s not much we can really do to stop ourselves outside of being self-aware, and many employees are far too concerned about their job security to bother telling you when you need to stop being so controlling.

While it’s natural to want to oversee everything as a startup, it’s a mentality that you need to break out of if you want to be successful in the future. To help you out, we’re going to list a couple of ways to help you stop micromanaging your workplace to ensure your company has a promising future with a strong office culture.

Micromanagement can be detrimental if it doesn’t stop early. (Source)

Have Faith in Your Employees

One of the biggest factors that will help you stop micromanaging is to have faith in your employees. Trust is a huge component to any healthy office culture and if you’re not being at least somewhat trusting of your employees, then you need to take a good look at why you have a lack of faith. Is it because they’re not performing well enough to your standards, or are you just being too harsh on them? Building trust with your employees isn’t the easiest thing in the world, but it’s certainly worth the effort and one of the easiest ways to break out of your micromanagement habits.

Start Looking at the Bigger Picture

If you want to grow your business then it’s important to start looking at the bigger picture. Whether it’s growing your home-based business and moving into an office or achieving international recognition, you need to focus on long-term goals instead of using your time to micromanage your employees.

It’s natural to want to keep an eye on your employees, but it can’t continue for long. (Source)

Hire Help When Needed

Some managers feel like they need to micromanage because their employees just aren’t able to cut it. For example, a manager might get involved with the work their employees do (this is more common in startups than small or medium businesses) because there’s a deadline coming up or because they need to teach their employees about certain things such as technology or how to use certain software. During times like this, you may want to consider managed IT services or other professional services that can help lighten the load. This will give you the peace of mind knowing that you have trained consultants advising your staff and it will take a load off your mind.

Final Words

Micromanagement is a habit that needs to be removed if you want to have a stable company culture that is ready to embrace growth. If you start growing your business and stick to your overbearing nature, then you’re going to have a tough time being a productive and efficient business in the future.

Are You Ready To Launch A Home-Based Business? A Guide To Getting Started

Are you ready to take the plunge and set up your own business? Many budding entrepreneurs choose to base their new business at home to save money, but launching a home-based company isn’t as easy as putting a desk and a chair in a guest bedroom. There’s a lot of work involved in getting a new venture off the ground, regardless of the location of your headquarters. Here are some tips to help you get started.

Creating your base

If you plan to run a new business from home, consider where you’re going to base yourself. The areas you choose to use for work purposes will probably depend on the kind of company you hope to launch. You may need an office, a studio, a gallery, a treatment suite or a workshop. Think about the best location for your headquarters. Have you got spare bedrooms that could be converted into an office, an art or design studio or a stockroom, or do you only use part of the garage? Could you use the loft or basement as a workspace, or have you got outbuildings that would make fantastic treatment rooms? Whatever type of business you hope to create, you’ll need space to be creative, meet clients if this is applicable and get your head down and focus. If you can, it’s best to choose an area that is separate from living rooms and bedrooms, as this may help you achieve a better work-life balance. Before you start looking at colors, desks or blinds, come up with some designs and layout ideas.

Kitting out your headquarters

Before you can knuckle down and get started, you need to make sure you have all the tools, equipment, technology, gadgets and supplies you require to do your job. There’s no point in starting something to find that you haven’t got everything you need to finish it. Stock up and get yourself ready in advance of the launch date. If you’re designing an office space, prioritize furniture. You’ll need a comfortable, supportive chair, preferably with a caster for greater flexibility, and a desk you can adjust to your height. It’s also a good idea to invest in storage. If you have a treatment room, a home salon or an area where you plan to meet clients, ensure that the space is clean, tidy and smart, and add some touches to inject interest. Plants, wall art and splashes of color work well.

Drumming up interest

Once your home is set up, you can turn your attention to drumming up interest. There are countless ways of doing this from posting flyers through doors and paying for adverts in the local press to using social media, email marketing and search engine optimization. Design your campaign based on your target market and the type of business you own. Promotions like flash sales, offers for recommending the service to friends and introductory discounts are a great way to get people talking.

Are you ready to launch a home-based business? If so, hopefully, this guide will come in handy. Good luck!

Turn A New Page… How To Start A New Life In A New Town

Pxhere

Sometimes we all have that hankering to start all over again, and move to a new place, and, in essence, cut all ties with your life right now. Sometimes it happens, where do we get a new job, or we just feel that we need to be someplace else, the desire to begin again is something that cannot be ignored. But the concern in this is one of practicality. Yes, you have a feeling about a new place, but what do you really need to have in place to make sure that your transition to a new life in a new place goes smoothly?

The Move

The move can be very stressful, but if you are determined to leave your old life behind, then this is a perfectly good opportunity to break with the past and sell a lot of your possessions. At the end of the day, we can get new items if we so need to. And even if our budget dictates, and we need to get a car, there are plenty of used cars for sale, you just have to look online to see something in your price range. If you really don’t have much, can you go on the train? The move doesn’t have to be stressful, but it can feel that way because of all the pressure on you in beginning this new life. But remember, it’s just the beginning.

The Settling In Period

This was never going to be easy. But the first month or so will be the worst part. Trying to get yourself settled into a new way of life, in new surroundings, with a new job or a new flatmates, these are all major shocks to the system. Settling in properly can take some time, and you just need to get your head around this. The best way for you to get accustomed to your surroundings quicker is to just get out there and explore. The more you know at the very outset, the quicker you can become comfortable. And yes, it’s likely you will feel like you are out of your depth, but do you have people nearby you can talk to? If not, go online, and chat with your friends back home.

Maintain A Positive Mindset

Remember, finding your feet is always a period of trial and error. You’ve moved to a new place for a specific reason, and regardless of the main reason itself, you know at the back of your mind that this was something that had to be done. It’s a place that is going to bring the best out in you, and this is what you feel. And remember, if it doesn’t work out, what is the worst case scenario? You end up going back home for a bit, or you try another place out for size!

A new life in a new town is the biggest of changes, and you can feel like you’ve bitten off more than you can chew. But you had a feeling about this new place, so don’t hold back, go with the flow, it could be the best thing that ever happened to you!

Listen To Your Heart: Start Your Own Business

Image

If you’re a budding entrepreneur, then you have most likely heard about all the reasons as to why you shouldn’t go into business. “It sounds better than what it is!” “It’s too risky!” “You’ll lose money! And sleep! And your social life! And you’ll end up in debt!” And while all of these can be very true – it doesn’t mean it’s going to happen to you. Sure, there’s a big chance, because starting your own business IS very difficult, and CAN be very stressful – but that shouldn’t hold you back from doing something that you believe in.

There are the downfalls, and it’s important you know what they are, but if you chose to only look at them you’ll always have a negative outlook on everything. So you should have a look at all the positive reasons why you should take the risk and go for it.

Here are some examples.

Free time

Now, this doesn’t happen immediately, when you’re first starting up, you will be putting in endless hours for barely any money – if anything at all. But once you’ve passed those hard few chapters and do it correctly, you can start being in charge of your schedule and create that freedom that you think you deserve – whenever you want.

The stories

Whoever you end up crossing paths with, you can guarantee that when they ask that common question about what you do for a living, and you tell them that you own your own business – more questions will follow. It interests people, and their curiosity makes them want to know more, so be prepared to be the storyteller when you socialize.

Tax benefits

When you’re a freelancer (which means you work for yourself), you get to take advantage of the tax perks that are available to you. Most of the time you are able to write off expenses like car payments, phone bills, and travel. So be sure to ask your accountant what benefits you will be entitled to.

Pride

When you do something all by yourself, regardless of whether you’ve been able to get success from it yet or not – it’s an amazing feeling. You had something imagined in your head, and you managed to turn it into something real, and not only that, but now you’re able to make yourself a living off it.

The future

When you have a job like a delivery driver or a shop assistant, it’s hard to imagine passing down your career to your loved ones because it’s just not how those things work. But when you work for yourself, you can pass it on to the next generation and leave them with all the incredible things you created yourself.

Security

Because you own your own business, you never have to worry about getting fired or laid off, because you’re your own boss – you have no one to answer to or try and defend your job title to. You run the show.

Networking

Networking is an essential thing that has to be done if you want your name getting out there and the chance to meet potential business partners and sponsors. But this is part of the fun – being a social butterfly. Engaging with other people, swapping stories and learning from others that have the experience you don’t yet have.

Becoming a pro

Everyone wants to be the best at what they do, and starting out as an entrepreneur will give you such knowledge that you will be able to use it in your daily life. You will learn so many things that will not only teach you what it means to be a boss, but will also put you in a position where you can be a mentor to others one day, and share all the skills that you have collected along your journey.

Determination

Working for yourself can be a struggle because you have to be the one to self-motivate – you don’t have someone else encouraging you or telling you what your weekly targets are – it’s all down to you. This is difficult to begin with, but over time you will establish a determination that can’t be broken, and that’s a very strong skill to have, that will help you along in life forever.

Financial independence

This is one of the reasons that get everyone excited about working for themselves – the financial benefits. Money is independence. Simple. The more money you make, essentially the more freedom you have, and this will also be the drive that pushes you to work harder. Something to remember is that money doesn’t buy happiness, but what it does give you, is a lot more opportunities to find that so-called happiness.

Change the world

A lot of entrepreneurs tend to believe that this is the start to changing the world, and while this sounds a little over the top – just look at Apple and Facebook! So there’s nothing wrong with having a dream that seems impossible, because you may just get there one day. Who knows, you may develop mobile apps and then have your own set of organisations that cater to people from all around the world.

Create jobs

When you start making money and feel like it’s time to grow your business, you may want to hire some helping hands to join you. This is a moment to enjoy, knowing that you are able and responsible for sharing success with potential employees of yours. Your little idea that you once started with, is now not only providing you with an income, but others too.

As you can see, there are tons of reasons why you should follow your heart and start your own business. But finally, ask yourself why you want to do it, as that’s the most important reason of them all. Has this idea been in your head for years, and you’re now finally ready to do something about it? Or do you just feel it’s time for a change in your life, and this is the final push you need? Whatever it may be – you create your own destiny.

Cutting Out The White Stuff: How Does A Paperless Office Benefit You?

crumpled paper

Pexels Image

There are many articles out there about why you should go paperless. Everyone, from big business to small, is jumping on this bandwagon. So much, so that paper in the office is sure to be a thing of the past relatively soon.

The principal and, undeniably, most important argument for this is environmental. We live in an age where not caring about the planet isn’t an option. With global warming an ever-present threat, many of us are cutting down on plastic and installing solar panels in our homes. And, of course, cutting paper out of our offices. After all, we can’t produce paper without cutting down trees. And, given that trees are essential to a functioning planet, we could do with leaving them where they are.

But, you may be reluctant to jump on the no-paper bandwagon. There’s no shame in admitting that the environmental impacts aren’t enough to sway you. You certainly wouldn’t be alone. But, these aren’t the only benefits of a paperless office. In truth, doing away with the white stuff could make life much easier for you. Here’s how.

Taking the complication out of filing

Flickr Image

Filing cabinets are the bane of any office worker’s existence. You have to go through about ten drawers to find the piece of paper you’re after! And, just when you think you’ve found a system which works, you come up against more issues.  It’s a never-ending problem and one that you could do away with by going paperless. Imagine if you kept all your files on a computer. In one click, you could find anything you needed. By using informative file names, you could just do a quick search. How much time would that save you?

Remote access to information

Remote access is another benefit. By using a cloud service like those offered by many computer consulting services, you and your colleagues can access anything, anywhere.  Forget taking essential files out of the office, or having to wait until the next day. You can work from home with ease, and have access to anything you need. On top of which, colleagues on the road can pull up a file at the click of a button. All it takes is an internet connection. An ability like this could enhance your operations. And, with your competitors turning to the cloud, this could be essential for keeping ahead of the game.

No more cluttered storage cupboard

PxHere Image

Ah, the office storage cupboard. It’s messy no matter how often you try to clean it, and frankly, it’s wasted space. But, consider that everything within that storage space is geared towards a paper-filled office. Go paperless, and you can get rid of paper itself, the paperclips, staples, and so much more. Before you know it, you’ll have a free storage cupboard on your hands. New private office, anyone? Or, you could knock this into your central office space to free up some much-needed room. Either way, it’ll get better use than it ever did in the past.

Bored Of The 9 To 5? These Jobs Will Fix That

For most of us, going to work is as simple as sitting behind a desk and working at a computer for eight hours a day. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course, and most people enjoy earning their income this way. However, for some people, the 9 to five workday can become a bit of a drag. When the boredom becomes too much to bear, it’s time to look for a job that isn’t confined to the usual work hours.

Do you think you are ready to free yourself from your office desk? Here are some great career alternatives to the boring old nine to five.

Teacher

If you are sick of being stuck behind your desk every day but don’t mind working full days during the week, then you might want to think about becoming a teacher. Most teachers don’t work nine to five anyway, so you aren’t trapped to that schedule anyway. Teaching is a really inspiring job and you’ll find that it’s really easy to feel motivated when working with kids and helping them achieve their future goals. There are plenty of guides on how to get into teaching later in life online.

Freelance Writer

Maybe the main thing you dislike about your nine to five is your boss? If so, then you might want to consider becoming a freelancer. That way, you can work for yourself and you won’t have to worry about anyone senior to you. Freelance writing is a great contracting job to get into. You might want to start a blog so that brands and companies start to notice you. If they like your tone of voice and writing style, they might want to reach out for collaborations!

Construction Worker

If you are really against the whole idea of working at a desk every again, you might like the idea of looking for a job that keeps you on your feet. There are always plenty of construction jobs out there, so you might want to apply to one of these. When you start working as a construction worker, you will be mostly working outside in laboring roles. It’s definitely hard work but is also very rewarding!

Park Ranger

Do you love the great outdoors? If so, then you might want to consider becoming a park ranger. There are two options with this job – first of all, you could simply be a ranger at your local park. Alternatively, if you want a bit more of a challenge, you should see about becoming a ranger at a national park. There will be more ground to manage, but you will be able to see a lot more exciting wildlife. This is a great opportunity who already has some outdoor experience or enjoys a spot of gardening!

You don’t have to work behind a desk in a nine to five forever. If you feel like it could be time to move on, it’s definitely worth taking the plunge. You’ll end up in a brand new and exciting career!

Make Steps Towards A More Comfortable Life In 2018

Why not make the new year a groundbreaking one? It is just two years before the turn of the decade, and what a decade it was, most definitely an eventful one, that’s for sure. So, in order to stabilize a little bit, why not think of some ways in which you could provide yourself with a slightly more comfortable life? As nice as it would be, we are not going to discuss how to control the universe and bend it to your will, but we are going for the next best thing, namely, financial stability. Now, money isn’t everything, but not having money just might be, especially in the current day and age. Money still makes the world go round, and it still pays the bills as well as put food on the table, so it does not seem like we are letting that business model go away anytime soon. While we’re here though, might as well make the most of it.

Finally start up a business

No one ever got rich by working for someone else. At least that’s what some say, but the truth is that working for someone else is usually an important stepping stone on your way to the top. Well, if that’s where you’re aiming for anyway, but since you probably still have quite a few years left on this planet, why not? Before you start deciding on which direction you would like to push onwards in and open a business, make sure a few things are in check so you do not find yourself running into any avoidable shortcomings when trying to finally start up your business. Are you debt free? Is your credit rating in check? There are quite a few things worth sorting out before you start on any major undertaking. If your credit score has seen better days, then you should think to yourself “how to improve my credit score”, then do some appropriate research. Are you currently financially indebted to someone? If so, try to put aside money to pay off your debts first. After that, the world is your oyster, with a clean slate and pure profit to be made.

Learn some career changing skills

Starting up your own company is not the only way to work for yourself. Rather than working in a job where your progress is more or less stagnating the longer you stay there due to the fact that you aren’t even learning anything while being there, why not try picking up some other skills? Be it through some courses, online or other, or just studying and learning in your own free time, being able to do something which will actually be able to make you money on its own is not only impressive but incredibly useful. Whether you want to get into photography or programming, resources for both exist, with some even being freely available online to get you started. Being able to work as a freelancer or just making some extra money on the side can prove to be that extra financial boost you needed to feel at peace and buy all those things you’ve been denying yourself all this time.
