Eco Construction: Guide to Building a Rooftop Greenhouse

Whether planting is your profession or hobby, a green house is one amazing gardening structure that’s worth considering. This type of building is used by many gardeners for its ability to offer a longer growing season. It is built with climate or temperature control specifications, allowing for a year-round harvest. Since it’s a covered structure, protection for your plants against harsh weather conditions won’t be an issue.

What’s more, greenhouses are suitable for growing more plant options and they are generally customizable too. The catch is, you need a good space for it. Most gardeners build their greenhouses in their backyard or any vacant lot, but ground space isn’t the only option. You can also build one on your rooftop. Read on to know how you can make this amazing green project happen:

Consult an expert for assessment

Before you start with the construction, you must first ensure if your rooftop is actually suitable for a greenhouse. You can call on a local contractor or architect to perform an assessment and determine if the orientation and age of your rooftop can support the structure. They can give you all the structural details and assessments of whether your house is safe for greenhouse construction. At the same time, they can give you an idea as to what building permits you’ll need to acquire for the build.

Plan for supplies and equipment

Depending on the type and size of your build, there are general supplies you should consider and obtain. These include concrete for foundation supports, galvanized steel or aluminum for beams and straps, patterned glass, insulation materials, and greenhouse plastic with a UV rating. You should also list down all the needed nutrients for the plants or vegetables you’re planning to grow. If you’re looking to grow hydroponics, you will need separate nutrient solutions for the plants. You can create your own plant buckets and planter boxes.

And since you’ll be building on your rooftop, you’ll need to obtain or rent the right type of equipment and gear for the construction. The good news is that most contractions readily have them. One important piece of equipment for the rooftop build is a heavy-duty mobile truck crane for moving heavy building materials up and down the structure. Many contractors will rent the equipment on your behalf. There might also be a need for a boom light for lighter lifts. Other pieces of equipment needed for the construction include a telehandler and scissor lift.

Add a liveable space

Creating a living space next to your rooftop garden can make gardening a better experience. You can go for a peaceful oasis or an entertaining space, depending on your needs. But remember, there is a restricted amount of weight the house can hold. Take into account the weight of your greenhouse before planning for the living space. You can get a licensed expert to check for structural integrity. They will ensure if the structure can support the extra weight of heavy materials such as furniture, tiles, or stones.

You’d also need to consider how you’ll move the furniture and items from down to up the rooftop. Lastly, the types of materials and furniture you’ll use to build the living space should be ideal for the local weather. If your area gets a lot of rainy days, you might consider building a roof for the space too. Or, choose a type of material that can withstand harsh climates. For instance, you can choose furniture made of wood such as cedar or acacia, which provide strong weather resistance.

Build for weather survival

Your rooftop greenhouse is the first one to get hit by storms or wind. That is why your house must be strong enough to have the greenhouse anchored into it. Whether you’re planning for a DIY project or you’re hiring a contractor, it’s best to check out rooftop greenhouse plans. You can find free ones online. Apart from the foundation, your greenhouse frame should be strong enough to withstand the weight of snow, high winds, and storms. Be sure to also choose the right covering film and hardware for your greenhouse.

The last thing you want to happen is for the greenhouse to collapse on your roof. Other things to consider include film accessories, doors, and benches.

A rooftop greenhouse can provide you with a unique gardening place and experience. Plus, it can help reduce the heat on your house and eventually, your energy costs too. Carefully plan your greenhouse construction using our tips and own an incredible gardening space for you and your plants.

How To Do Home Maintenance Tasks: Step-by-Step Guide for Everyone

You know that you need to do home maintenance tasks around the house to keep it running smoothly. But what if you don’t have a clue where to start? No worries! This post will give you step-by-step instructions on how to complete some of the more common technical home maintenance tasks around the house. If you follow these steps correctly and stay diligent with your upkeep duties, your home’s value should increase over time.

Check the HVAC System Filters

It’s easy to forget about the HVAC system filters. However, you should clean these regularly and also make sure that they are in place so nothing can block them. This can happen once a year for most homes, but it may be necessary more often if there is a lot of debris or other types of particles around the house.

You should inspect the filters and replace faulty valves with durable ones like the 3 way solenoid valve every 12 months to ensure that the system is working properly.

Clean the Hood Vent in the Kitchen

The first step is to unscrew the front grill pieces from both sides of the range hood opening. Now, reach inside with a screwdriver or other sharp object and poke through all grease deposits until they are loose enough to come out.

Finally, shove them into an empty coffee can for disposal before reassembling everything. Don’t forget about cooking fumes while doing this work.

Most people don’t realize the importance of a hood vent until they are cooking something on high heat and notice it takes forever for the smoke to clear. You might be able to tell by looking at your kitchen, but you can check if there’s any problem with the ventilation system by inspecting the filter.

Inspect Grout and Calking

Calking is a colorless sealant that fills the gaps between bricks and blocks. When you inspect calking, you check for cracks or missing pieces in the sealant. If there are any issues with it, use an appropriate filler to repair them before water can penetrate your home’s foundation and cause even more expensive damage.

Check cracked areas that need sealing by applying new grout over old material! This will make sure no hairline cracks remain open so bacteria cannot get inside.

Check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detector

A smoke detector or CO alarm is an essential tool for detecting fires and carbon monoxide. These alarms are usually battery-operated, but they also have a power cable.  To test your smoke detector, just press the “test button.” If you hear anything at all, then it’s working and should not need replacing anytime soon.

If there’s no sound when you push the button, then replace the batteries asap because this means that either the unit has lost its charge or otherwise needs repair.

Conclusion

In conclusion, do not be afraid to tackle some of the more technical home maintenance tasks. You can do many things, but it’s always easier when you know the basics of what needs doing. Keep your eyes open for anything wrong in or around your house, and follow these steps if you detect any issue.

How To Restore Your Home After A Flood

Floods can be caused by bad weather, burst pipes, or an overflowing river. Wherever it comes from, flood water can cause a lot of damage that can be very expensive to sort out, often needing a lot of renovations. A lot of your possessions can be badly damaged too, which can be very upsetting. Here’s what to do if your home has been flooded.

Image – free for commercial use

Stop the Water at Its Source

If the flood has been caused by a storm or a river bursting its banks, then you know where the water is coming from. If the water is coming from somewhere inside your home, you need to the source. The easiest way to stop the water from doing more damage is to turn it off at the main water valve.

Turn Off the Electricity

Turn off all the electricity to stop the water from causing dangerous damage to your electrics. Don’t walk through any water to access your fuse box. If you can’t reach the fuse box without going into the water, call an electrician, who will be able to help you safely.

Leave the House

Leave the house and find somewhere safe and dry to wait, such as a neighbor’s house. Make sure everyone who was in the house is safe and with you. If the flooding has been caused by a natural disaster, you might be able to find a temporary shelter by listening to the local news. Get everyone relocated to the shelter as soon as you can, if there is one.

Call For Help

When everyone is safe, call for help. Call rhe emergency services if anyone needs medical attention. No matter what’s happening in the house, the damage has already been done, so worry about the safety of your family first. When everyone is safe, start calling for help to handle the flood.

If you rent your home, call your landlord. If you own your home, call your insurance company. Your insurance company might want to send someone to you to look over the damage before you can start cleaning up.

Document Everything

You’re going to want to start cleaning as soon as you can, but try to hold off. Before you can start cleaning, you should document everything with pictures and videos so your insurer can see how much damage there is. Make sure you don’t touch the water as you’re doing this, as there could be sewage in it. Before you go inside, put on some protective gear, such as waders or waterproof boots.

Start the Cleanup Process

Cleaning up after a flood is a long process with a lot of hard work, and you might need help from a Property Damage Restoration Company. You need to get the water out, rescue as many of your belongings as you can, get your house dried out, and disinfect any areas that the water has touched. Wear protective gear while you’re working, so you can avoid getting into contact with any bacteria.

The Most Vital Investments To Make In Your Car’s Safety

The number one priority for any driver should be ensuring that their car can get them from point A to point B as safely as possible. This isn’t just down to how well they can drive and adapt to risks on the road, but it also depends on how effectively they can manage the vehicle itself. There are several upgrades you can invest in to make your car safer, here are just a few of them.

Link – Pixabay License

Get gadgets to watch behind you

There is a lot of car safety tech out there and it might seem difficult to decide which ones are going to best suit you and your vehicle. However, those that help you better see behind you and your blind spots can be a great help. Blind-spot warning systems are becoming more common, and you may also want to install a reversing camera. Reversing without a good idea of what might be behind you and in your environment can be a risk to other people, not to mention a risk of damage to your car.

Ensure your tyres are quality

Your wheels are where the car meets the road, and the tyres determine how much grip they have and how much you can control your car’s momentum. The better your tyres, the better your grip, momentum, and ability to deal with wet or hot tarmac. A tyres service can help you choose the tyres best suited to your vehicle and make sure that you’re taking the appropriate care of them. Aside from investing in quality, be sure to start looking for replacements when the treads start to wear.

Keeping up with the electricals

Most modern cars have a wide range of electrical systems that keep the various features running as best as possible. While you should pay attention to the warning lights that flare up when this system notices something isn’t right, you should also be aware of the fact that these systems can start to fail after some time. If your car’s electronics are proving to be unreliable, then you might want to look at auto-electrical services and consider replacing the system inside your car. Tech fails at some point and it’s going to require you to either replace the car or replace the electrics.

Making the car more stable

This tip is better suited to those who are, in particular, still developing their driving skills. If this is your first car or you’re sharing the car with a new driver, then electronic stability control (standard on most newer vehicles) can help prevent the loss of the car by applying the brakes if the driver starts to lose control of the wheel. As mentioned, this feature comes as standard in most cars that have been made in the past ten years, so it’s only really a necessary upgrade for older cars.

If you want to be safer on the road, then you have to start with the car. The investments above are just the start, you will be able to find more with a little research.

What Happens When You Switch From Smoking to Vaping?

What Happens When You Switch From Smoking to Vaping?

There’s no denying that more regular smokers are switching to vaping in an effort to curb their long-term smoking habits. Many people also use vaping as a bridge towards the ultimate goal of quitting altogether.

You’re probably reading this because you’re thinking of making a move from smoking to vaping, but you have some unanswered questions. You may even have some worries about vaping, and some online searches might have proved fruitless.

If you’re new to vaping and want to educate yourself on the subject fully, and you want to eventually quit your smoking addiction or habit, the following information will tell you all you need to know:

Vaping Is Less Harmful Than Smoking

The main issue with smoking is that you inhale all kinds of toxins, and they end up lingering inside your body. What’s more, regular smoking can cause permanent damage to your vital organs and even lead to long-term medical conditions and diseases.

Many smokers are aware of those facts, and that’s why vaping has become an alternative option that is constantly growing in popularity. For example, people who smoke cigarettes won’t inhale tar when they switch to vaping; tar is a leading carcinogen.

You’ll Have to Get Technical

If you’ve never owned or used a vaporizer before, you’ll need to educate yourself on the various components and how they work. For instance, you can buy portable vaporizers or “vape pens” you can take anywhere instead of desktop ones you might use in your home.

Portable vaporizers also need batteries, such as those from Bloom Farms Wellness, to operate. The batteries are rechargeable via a standard USB cable, meaning you can usually charge it from the same cord as what you’d use for your smartphone.

You’ll also need to familiarize yourself with technical terms like atomizer, e-juices, cartridges, and more. Take a look at this article from Wikipedia for further information as a starting point in your educational journey.

You Won’t Annoy Other People

A bugbear that people have when they are near smokers is they end up passively smoking as well, whether they want to or not. Plus, smokers and those that are often near them will end up smelling of tobacco or whatever else they smoke during the day.

When you vape, whether you choose a nicotine vape or something different like one of these THCA vapes, the only thing that gets emitted is steam from the vaporizer. If someone vapes using a scented e-juice, for example, you might occasionally get a sniff of tolerable scents like orange, lavender, or vanilla.

As you can imagine, most people would prefer hanging around those that vape instead of those that smoke cigarettes or other items.

You Can Control Your Nicotine Intake

Lastly, when you start vaping, the good news is you don’t have to “make do” with a set amount of nicotine in your e-juice as you would with regular cigarettes. Many people that wean themselves off nicotine do so by lessening their intake each time they buy new e-juice.

If that’s something you would like to do, you will almost always find a vast choice of e-liquids available with varying levels of nicotine.

You’ll eventually reach a point where you have minimal nicotine intake, and your body gets used to it, giving you the option to quit vaping and consuming nicotine for good.

5 Post Pandemic Dating Tips

Unsplash

Now that restrictions are finally lifted many people are keen to get back on the dating scene. If you’re finding the prospect a little scary, check out these five post pandemic dating tips.

1 . Get Prepared

If you haven’t dated in a long while you might be feeling a little overwhelmed right now. Getting yourself prepared will help you to feel better. Dating preparation looks different for different people. For some of us it’s choosing a new outfit, for others it’s asking our friends for a pep talk. On the day of the date, it might be something little like brushing your teeth right before going out, doing your hair, or even adding some pheromones onto your skin after your perfume to help give off the right impression on your date. Here are a few general ideas to inspire you:

  • Treat yourself to something that makes you feel fabulous, whether it’s a pre-date manicure or a new lipstick!
  • Meditate and breathe deeply, it’s normal to feel nervous, observe that feeling and let it pass.
  • Had a few bad dating experiences in the past? It’s time to let that go. Move forward from those memories and prepare for new horizons.
  • Free yourself from dating misconceptions and approach the journey with an open mind.

2. Gain Perspective

If you’re feeling a little nervous it’s time to gain a little perspective. Remember, your date is probably feeling just as on-edge. It’s been a long while since we’ve been able to date in-person, and so it’s bound to feel a little strange!

Worried you’ll run out of things to say? Write a few notes before you go! Don’t take the notes with you, (that’ll be awkward if they fall out of your pocket)! Just brainstorm a few conversation topics that you can refer back to if you draw a blank.

3. Virtual if you prefer

Remember just because you can date in person doesn’t mean you have to. If you’re not feeling comfortable, then stick with virtual dates. Lots of people will still prefer to do this, it’s okay to wait until you are ready. Of course virtual dates tend to be a bit more awkward, so it’s best to keep the date pretty short.

4. Little Steps

If going for dinner with a stranger seems way too much right now, take things back to basics. Suggest a quick coffee or a walk in the park, take things slowly and at your own pace. We are all keen to get back out into the world, but four dates in one week might be a bit overwhelming! Choose one person from a dating app who you feel the most connection with, and go from there.

5. Have fun with it

Dating is meant to be fun, so ensure that you are having fun with it! Don’t date for the sake of it. If you’re not enjoying the experience then don’t put yourself through it. Check out alternative ways to have fun whether it’s phonechatlines.com articles or secret parties!

Dating after the pandemic is what you make of it. Don’t worry about what anyone else is doing, just focus on your values and your preferences. The dating scene can be tough, but it can also been plenty of fun.

3 Boxes To Tick When Selling Your Home

https://unsplash.com/photos/MP0bgaS_d1c

If you are planning on putting your property on the market this year, being prepared is the key. It is not just about making sure that you price your property right and have a big sign outside of your home. There is a lot more to selling a home than this. So, let’s take a look at some of the different things you need to do.

  1. Make sure your home is in perfect condition – The first thing you need to do is go around your home and inspect it to determine any maintenance tasks that need to be carried out before you put your property on the market, from septic tank pump-outs to plastering, there are so many different things that may need to be fixed in order to get your home in perfect condition. It is critical to do this because it can increase the chances of a quick sale and prevent there from being any problems during the property survey part of the process.
  2. Put together a marketing plan – If you want to sell your property quickly, marketing it effectively is a must. It used to be a simple process. You would hire an estate agent. They would place an ad in their window. People would walk past and that is how interest would be generated. However, in today’s digital age, there are so many different ways that people can search for homes, so you need to make sure you are in all of the right places. This includes the likes of social media and online listing websites. Of course, your estate agent should do all of this for you, but there is nothing stopping you from getting a better understanding and putting yourself out there or at least keeping your estate agents honest by having the required knowledge.
  3. Stage your home so that people can imagine themselves living in it – The final piece of the puzzle is to stage your home in a manner that is going to appeal to property viewers and enable them to imagine living in it. One of the biggest hurdles for people when viewing a property is that it feels like someone else’s home and so they cannot imagine themselves living in it. This is why you need to work hard to make sure that your property is staged in a neutral way that brings out the best assets of the home but presents it in a blank canvas that people can build upon. You could hire a home stager to take care of this for you, yet there are lots of great articles and advice pieces online that will help.

So there you have it: some of the different things we advise you to do if you are going to be putting your property on the market in the near future. Tick all of the different boxes above and you can be sure that you will give yourself a great chance of selling your property at a price you are happy with.

DIY With the Kids: Home Improvement Made Fun

If you are like most parents, you are a busy person. Doing household chores, cooking dinner, helping the kids with school – your schedule is packed with important tasks that must be accomplished within the day. With everything that’s going on, it’s nearly impossible to accomplish some home maintenance tasks.

But here’s an idea, Mom and Dad: what if you can include the children in some home improvement projects? It hits two goals with one stone: it’s a great bonding activity that enables you to finish some items around your home.

Whether it’s teaching the kids how to garden or taking them with you as you shop for engineered hardwood floors from a reputable supplier, including the children in your tasks takes some load off your shoulders while teaching your kids a few things about home improvement.

Fortunately, there are many kid-friendly home improvement projects you can undertake. Assess their skill level to determine the tasks they can handle.

Ground Rules for Doing Home Improvement with Kids

Safety is still a priority to keep your children safe from accidents or injuries. Their skill level determines the tasks they can do. So before you assign your kids tasks, consider their skills.

Also, patience makes the entire experience fun for everyone. Since you are working with kids, don’t expect them to understand instructions as easily as you do. For some kids, it takes a little longer to complete a task so be patient with them.

What are Home Improvement Projects You Can Do with the Kids?

Fireplace Decoration

If your fireplace is the center point of a room, regular upkeep prevents it from looking worn out. Left without any maintenance, your fireplace can become an eyesore instead of a statement piece of your room.

Bring your fireplace back to life by cleaning it and adding some decorations. You can buy stylish pieces that encompass your personality and add it to your mantle. If you want to compliment the colors of your room, do so!

Involve the children by having them make homemade crafts or draw pictures that you can hang up around the mantle. Add an elegant touch by adding colorful plants.

Room Makeover

Transform a dust-collecting spare room or unused guestroom into one of the best places in your home. The children can help clean a room and remove clutter. To help the kids safely clean a room, let them use non-toxic disinfectants and cleaners so you don’t have to worry about them being harmed by chemicals.

Once the room is clean, furnish the space with statement pieces in your home or take the kids out shopping for new ones. You can turn the room into anything you and the children want:

  • Spare office
  • Extra bedroom for guests
  • Activity center for the children
  • Family room
  • Spare office
  • Family room
  • Game room
  • Reading room
  • Arts and crafts space

Bathroom Remodeling

Before you remodel your bathroom with the kids, check for signs of water damage. Small issues like these can become serious ones in the future if not addressed by the experts.

Once your bathroom is good, start remodeling! Have the children use eco-friendly cleaning products to scrub the grease and grime away. If some fixtures need upgrading, take the older kids with you to find new ones. They can also help you pick out new bathroom flooring, appliances and paint colors.

Backyard Sanctuary

Who says your backyard has to be “just another backyard in the neighborhood?” Instead of forgetting your yard, transform it into your vacation space. Apart from sprucing up your yard, you’ll also save more money by having a personal haven near your home.

A popular family project is building your garden – one filled with organic foods and beautiful plants. The kids will learn important skills, as well as expand their intellect and creativity. Together, you can plant your family’s favorite vegetables: cucumbers, zucchini and tomatoes are relatively easy to grow. As your skills improve, you can plant lettuces, melons and other vegetables that require more attention.

Make an At-Home Theater Room

Due to COVID-19, many cinemas are still shut down to prevent the spread of the virus. Fortunately, you can make your own cinema experience at home. Transform any spare room or living room into a theater for the family.

Take the kids out and have them pick the items they want for their mini cinema. This can include sleeping bags, candy stations, gumball machines and bean bag chairs. Make the space comfortable, so they can enjoy their favorite Netflix shows or Disney Christmas movies.

Doing home improvement tasks with your children is experiential learning at its finest. Figuring out how to do projects yourself (and with the kids) takes physical science, mathematics and reading, so you can turn each home maintenance task into a lesson minus the lecture!

At the end of the day, you didn’t just have a good time with the kids; you helped them develop the life skills they needed to become more independent.

4 ways to get more business visibility

If you own a business, your ultimate goal is to be successful. But how do you get successful? Well, there are many factors that determine your business’s success but the main one is visibility. It makes sense since the more people who know about your business, the more customers you are going to be pulling in. If you want to know quick and easy ways to boost your business visibility, don’t stop your scroll!

Why is business visibility so important?

Your firm is not going to bring in many customers or keep them around if the general public has little to no idea of your existence. You need to have a marketing plan up your sleeve so you can target as many people as possible (especially those in your target audience). Business visibility determines your success so please don’t neglect it.

Ways to get more brand visibility

  1. Utilize social media platforms

Establishing a strong presence on social networking sites like Twitter, Instagram. Facebook and Youtube is the key to getting noticed. It’s recommended that you stay active on social media by making frequent posts (following the algorithm – study this to make sure your content is optimized for it) and communicating with your customers and target audience.

For instance, if you are in the gaming industry set up a twitch account so you can communicate directly with people who would be interested in your products.

Read tips on business technology.

  1. Advertise

Advertisements are powerful tools for boosting your business visibility. You could get adverts to put on popular websites where your target audience would be, get an ad in the newspaper, or even set up outdoor banner frame systems.

  1. Attend a business trade show

Trade shows are events where businesses and customers in a specific industry go and view the latest developments and products. Companies can set up their own exhibits to show to potential customers and business collaborators. Creating a high-quality, attractive exhibition is a sure way to make your business more well known.

  1. Get a partner

Partner up with a more established business. This will be very advantageous for you since it enables your company to be viewed on a large scale (and you’ll bring in more customers as a result). Another benefit of collaborating with another company is that their reputation is passed down to you. People buy from businesses they trust and if you are affiliated with a trustworthy business with a positive reputation – customers will think the same of you. Because of this make sure you are collaborating with a good business that has a positive reputation in your industry.

In summary

For a business to be successful – it needs to be well known. You can boost your business’s visibility by posting algorithm friendly content on major social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter and YouTube, advertising your business both online and in the real world, exhibiting at a business trade show in your industry, and collaborating with a larger business.
