There comes a time in all our lives when we might start feeling stuck in a rut with our careers. It could be that we’ve done the same thing for a long time and just aren’t enjoying it anymore, or perhaps you keep getting passed over for a promotion. You might have peaked at the top of your career ladder and just don’t see any progression, or maybe everything else in your life is changing, so why does your career feel so stale? No matter what the reason is, it’s never fun to feel like you’re stuck in a career rut. If you decide to look for something new to get your teeth stuck into, luckily there are plenty of options. Here are some career tips if you’re feeling this way.

Speak to your employer

If you’re feeling stuck in a rut, it could be that your employer doesn’t realise. Your first port of call should be to speak to them and let them know how you’re feeling. They can work out why you’re feeling this way and see what they can do to help lift you out of it. They might be able to find you a new role or switch up what you’re doing. If you find yourself working on products such as motorola police radios, for example, you might want to switch up to helping develop other law enforcement items instead.

Find a side hustle

Maybe you’re feeling stuck in a rut because other areas in your life aren’t enriching enough. If that’s the case, why not pick up a side hustle? There are a host of side hustles out there you can try, from arts and crafts to starting up a blog. Think about what you’re interested in, or have always wanted to find out more about and use this to your advantage. By having another focus you could find you enjoy your office job more.

Find a new company

Your career rut might not be down to the role you’re doing, but the company you’re in. If you love marketing for example, but don’t like your company, it can make you feel like you don’t enjoy what you do. Try looking for similar roles in other companies as this will give you a refresh and a renewed sense of work purpose. You could also consider just doing something completely new but vaguely within the field you work in – the choice is yours! Soon you’ll find you feel much better about yourself and what you do.

These are just a few career tips that should help if you’re feeling stuck in a rut. There are many tips you can try and it’s important to do what’s best for you. Feeling stuck in a rut for too long can have negative implications for your mental health and you can find you suffer in other areas of your life. Have you felt stuck in a career rut?
